Matthew Perry was born in Williamstown, Massachusetts, to Suzanne Marie (Langford), a Canadian journalist, and John Bennett Perry, an American actor. His ancestry includes English, Irish, German, Swiss-German, and French-Canadian.
Perry was raised in Ottawa, Ontario, where he became a top-ranked junior tennis player in Canada. However, after moving to Los Angeles at the age of 15 to live with his father, he became more interested in acting. In addition to performing in several high school stage productions, he remained an avid tennis player. Perry ranked 17th nationally in the junior singles category and third in the doubles category. Upon graduating from high school, Perry intended to enroll at the University of Southern California. However, when he was offered a leading role on the television series, Second Chance (1987), he seized the opportunity to begin his acting career.
Perry appeared in the hit comedy film The Whole Nine Yards (2000), as the neighbor of a hit man, played by Bruce Willis. His other feature film credits included Fools Rush In (1997), Aren't You Even Going to Kiss Me Goodbye (1988), She's Out of Control (1989) and Parallel Lives (1994). He also co-starred with Chris Farley in the buddy comedy Almost Heroes (1998) and in the romantic comedy, Three to Tango (1999), opposite Neve Campbell. Perry resides in Los Angeles. He enjoys playing ice hockey and softball in his spare time.
Perry soon found the perfect project with a leading role in a new sitcom about a group of young men and women in New York City. Debuting in September 1994, Friends became one of the most popular television sitcoms of all time.
Perry played the witty and sarcastic Chandler Bing, who shared an apartment with an aspiring actor named Joey, played by Matt LeBlanc, and was a longtime friend of Ross, played by David Schwimmer. Completing the cast, Courteney Cox played Monica, Ross’ sister; Jennifer Aniston played Rachel, Monica’s roommate; and Lisa Kudrow played Phoebe, the kooky, offbeat friend to all.
On October 28, 2023, Perry was found unresponsive in his hot tub at his home in Pacific Palisades, Los Angeles, and was later pronounced dead at the age of 54. LAPD Captain Scot Williams said the "cause of death may not be known for some time, but at this point foul play is not suspected". The following day, the cause of death was listed as "deferred" by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office, pending "additional investigative steps". - บันเทิง

When I saw all the reporters going up and filming his family, I thought it was disgusting. I understand they have a job to do, but at the same time be respectful. Those people are a breed of human that I could never be apart of. The most disrespectful paparazzi get the best shots. It’s a competition to see if you can be a bigger a-hole then the person next to you and then you “win” by getting a better shot. Pretty crazy stuff. They are just doing their job but it is way out of line and been that way for a long time. I believe there needs to be some sort of laws put in place but nothing can be done about filming from a public place like a sidewalk in front of the house. That would go against the first amendment.

I did know Matthew personally - I worked with him on a little known movie called Numb. He had recently come out of rehab and was pretty shut down but I managed to win him over, after a couple of weeks of trying, and we shared inside jokes and chats. He was a very kind and sensitive guy with a LOT of demons. I cherish a pic we took at the end of the shoot when we’d just wrapped an all nighter in a grocery store. He wrapped his arms around me and put his cheek up against mine. In that moment was when I realized his gruff exterior on that shoot was his way of protecting himself, but behind that was a loving. kind soul. 💔
I literally gasped when the news broke. He battled his addictions so, so, so hard. I watched “Fools Rush In” again a few nights ago - what a handsome, charming, and funny man he was ❤ He and Matt LeBlanc had such great chemistry - they were an incredible comedic duo. You absolutely did it right Scott, you always do. Some celebrities touch us in a way that's unexplainable. They just become a part of our lives. They bring us joy, happiness, good times and unforgettable memories. When we lose them it's like losing a family member. Love has no bounds and so we grow to love them like our dearest friends. Sometimes, we even get to see them through their television shows and performances more often than our closest friends or even family. Sometimes they bring us sadness too, like now. We feel the loss almost as greatly as the persons family does. We are blessed by celebrities though because of the legacy they leave behind that we can watch over and over again. I think everyone that comes across our lives leaves some kind of footprint behind. Celebrities do it in the biggest way though because they keep showing up. What a kind gesture to donate the proceeds to Matthew Perry's favorite fund. He would have loved that and it's a wonderful way to honor him. Thank you, Scott, for doing this video. I know it wasn't easy but that's what friends do for friends. I'm adding an extra donation to maybe help even a little more. Btw, I'm not sure if you're aware, but today is a special day called "The day of the dead". As a Canadian and Gen Xer, this is a terrible hurtful loss for me personally and I never met him. I grew up watching him, Growing Pains, Charles in Charge, Friends. But even more special was how he looked at addiction and how he tried so hard and wanted to help others. That is how I will remember him. Thank you for being so respectful Scott.

His death impacted me hugely, I cant imagine the pain of his family amd friends. A man who acknowledged his addiction, spent a long time overcoming it, and helped thousands of others overcoming theirs, and will continue to do so, his legacy. Good night our "friend", rest in eternal peace.
I’m thinking of his family. My son died April 19 2019. He was a Marine and only 34 years old. Ben was hit by a car in Palm Desert the day after returning from Iraq. We took care of him for 14 years. Losing a child is something that profoundly changes you, there is no recovering from the loss. It’s the loss of so many hopes and dreams.

As a recovering heroin addict and heart transplant pt this hits so close to home. I am so sad Matthew was so much more then an actor. He did so much for people with addictions that wanted help. He helped change many people's life for the better. He has left a beautiful legacy and a giant hoke in recovery. Scott I'm so sorry about your mom.

I am so greatful my addiction has been removed to date. Tomorrow could bring it back but rt now I feel good. My biggest fear was leaving my 2 sons behind. I saw what my best friends young children have had to go through. I wish you all the love and the best life ever.

Thank you for this video Scott. Matthew Perry’s passing is the first celebrity passing that took my breath, hurt my heart & made me cry real tears. Reading his book really made me feel like I’d connected with Matt as a person, beyond my love of Chandler. It really feels like he was stolen from us at a time where he finally felt he’d got a handle on his disease. When he’d found some happiness & calm from the chaos of addiction. That’s so tragic!

Much respect for how you approached this situation! I am a cardiac nurse and a heart issue is the first thing that came to my mind when I heard of his death. The greatest thing about the show Friends is that it bridged generations! We loved it growing up and kids growing up now love it! RIP Matthew!

My sincere condolances to you @ScottonTape and to all who enjoyed and admired the work Matthew Perry gifted all of us. You hit the nail right on the head about why and how it can be so upsetting/devastating/crushing when a celebrity passes that meant so much to us. I would offer an additional perspective if I may; it is also how they made you feel. Yes, there is escapism but there is always that song that got you through your first break up, loss of someone, or anything poignant that mattered to you. I was 14 when Freddie Mercury died. I'm a life long musician and Queen was my generation's Beatles. We heard the news late at night on the radio and I had been in bed listening to my Walkman when I heard. My Dad had heard on his radio at the same time. I cried myself to sleep on my Dad's lap at the age of 14. I am still saddened when I think of his horrible death and the music never written or shared. I'm sure there are some Matthew Perry fans who feel the same way. This is normal to feel this way when someone made you feel the way they did and were there during the good times and the bad. To those who are feeling hit hard, you have come to the right place. Scott's people have the same heart when it comes to people that mattered to each other. You did a good job, Scott. You always do. I was one of those guys who thought I was too cool to watch a show like friends back when I was younger. Then I met my fiancé in 2018 and she made me watch it because I made her watch Star Wars. Chandler and Joey were the reason I fell in love with the show. Unfortunately last year I lost her to cancer and haven’t been able to watch it since but I know one day I will again because it was “our show” to watch together forever. RIP Matthew and thank you for all the laughs you brought her and myself. 🙏🏽
Was not expecting his passing at all. Feels like just recently I was watching you talk about the Friends' building. The fact that you were able to be in the area so soon after his passing to talk about him and make a place for people to come to grieve is very fitting. I was so shocked to hear the sad news. In the last few days, I watched a whole lot of videos and interviews with Matthew on TH-cam, which was kind of comforting. But strangely, watching an episode of Friends is simply too hard for me at the moment. It will definitely never be the same again…

I so admired his courage, to show up and work despite usually feeling so terrible because of his addictions and for never giving up trying to get better. If anyone deserves to rest in peace, it’s Matty. His struggles are now over and I’m so happy for him. Heartbroken that WE no longer have him though…he was definitely one of a kind…blessed be sweetheart ❤

I knew a guy, a great dad, that was working on his pond in his Bobcat, he got to a step angle and fell out and was knocked out after hitting his head and ended up drowning in the pond. Death is hard and is very tragic. You were very respectful and did an awesome job. It’s still hard to believe that an actor from a show in our generation, not our parents, has passed away. Mathew was my favorite on the show and will be greatly missed.
I have cried on and off for the past 5 days since hearing the devastating news of Matthew's passing. Even though we didn't know him personally, we feel like we did. Friends is one of my all time favourite shows and it was my Mom's favourite show and she passed from cancer 3 weeks before the finale. She just wanted to live long enough to see the final show of Friends. My daughters are now huge Friends fans as well and we do Friends marathons at the cottage. There have been a few celebrity deaths that have hit me hard, John Lennon, George Harrison and a few others that have touched my soul and now Matthew's passing is one of the deaths that I think will affect me for many years to come. You did a great job Scott. You were extremely respectful and spoke for all of us. From one Torontian to another, well done xo

I’m still in shock and maybe even denial about his death, I’m a huge fan of friends and I essentially grew up with them, it started when I was about 5 or 6 and they’ve gotten me through some extremely hard times, it’s so reassuring to hear that you’re not weird or not crazy for taking his death so hard, people have been telling me that for days that all my feelings are normal because we as his fans feel like we knew him and we all feel like we personally lost a best friend, thank you for donating to an organization on behalf of your viewers and in his name, giving back and helping those find sobriety was so important to him and it became his life’s work and his purpose, and I hope he found peace and found his life’s purpose RIP Matthew Perry we all love you! Matthew Perry for me : Throughout his anxiety, depression and addiction, the one thing that stands out about him was his willingness to help others and his determination to hold onto life. Thank you for dealing with this so sensitively. I’m in the U.K. and can’t get there to pay my respects so appreciate you doing it on my behalf. I agree that people have a right to mourn as people like Matthew have been in much of our lives and it’s a great loss. I also agree that both Matthew and George Michael are the two people I’ve mourned greatest outside of my family.
He helped a lot of people struggling/suffering from addiction, just as he had. That's how I remember him, and I am grateful for his strength and honesty around overcoming such an ordeal, and simply wanting to help others. ❤

So sad that Matthew passed. He really turned his life around, not easy overcoming addiction, I know. My fav on Friends, he even made my late Father laugh out loud, which was no easy feet. ❤

I've been a fan of you Scott from the start of your channel. I'm 41 and have struggled with addiction since I was 25. I wasn't a super fan of Friends, but watched it on occasion. Matthew always seemed very genuine and honest about his struggles. The most important thing we as addicts have to do, is to keep fighting. I will remember Matthew for his strength and honesty in fighting addiction. He helped and inspired many actors, actresses, comedians, and creaters alike. Matthew Perry also inspired addicts such as myself to always continue to fight and that recovery is possible. Rip
I'm still in shock at the Death of Matthew Perry. So incredibly funny on Friends as Chandler Bing. So open and honest about his addictions. I cried like I knew him personally.

I mean going straight to the family. They're suffering with grief. You're a great humanitarian Scott. We love you. You do have alot of respect for people. thank you for posting....this was a hard loss as a fellow 54 yr old - someone who was in the "background" for many years of our lives when prime time TV was all there was prior to cable, internet...many of us didn't' know him personally but felt like we somehow did.
We can really tell that your heart was in this, Scott. I know for myself while i was going through detox, Friends was what i had on TV to distract me. I watched a doc about Patty Schemel, the drummer from Hole, and she said the same thing about Friends. Matthew will be missed. He was such a uniquely funny guy. So many iconic comedic moments.
I also lost my mother to heart disease. Hearing the emotion in your voice is exactly how I feel. I have been watching you for a while now. You are my favorite. I've watched every video. I think what you do is amazing. Keep it up, Scott. Love you, man.

Matthew was a good man with his own human problems. But he was prevailing and finding himself. Which I'm glad he did before he passed away.
So tragic the way he passed but I hope he knows how many people loved him and the man he was.
