Shortly after Billy Joel earned his first U.K. Top 40 hit with “Just The Way You Are,” he and his band travelled to England for an electrifying performance recorded for the hit BBC series The Old Grey Whistle Test. Ahead of his first headlining show in the country, Billy performed all the hits from The Stranger plus additional classics from his repertoire.

    Lyrics:
Some folks like to get away,
Take a holiday from the neighborhood
Hop a flight to Miami Beach or to Hollywood
But I'm takin' a Greyhound on the Hudson River line
I'm in a New York state of mind
I've seen all the movie stars in their fancy cars and their limousines
Been high in the Rockys under the evergreens
I know what I'm needin', and I don't want to waste more time
I'm in a New York state of mind
It was so easy livin' day by day
Out of touch with the rhythym and blues
But now I need a little give and take
The New York Times, the Daily News
It comes down to reality, and it's fine with me cause I've let it slide
I don't care if it's Chinatown or on Riverside
    I don't have any reasons
    I left them all behind
I'm in a New York state of mind
    Oh yeah
It was so easy living day by day
Out of touch with the rhythym and blues
But now I need a little give and take
The New York Times, the Daily News
    Who, oh, oh whoa who
It comes down to reality, and it's fine with me cause I've let it slide
I don't care if it's Chinatown or on Riverside
    I don't have any reasons
    I left them all behind
I'm in a New York state of mind
I'm just taking a Greyhound on the Hudson River line
Cause I'm in a, I'm in a New York state of mind

I took my two sons to your concert in St. Louis back in the 80’s. I wanted them to experience a true musical artist, not just noise. After your concert, my oldest son was so excited he couldn’t sleep that night. They couldn’t stop talking about the concert. We went again to several years later when you were back in St. Louis. Thanks for all the great times.

At tour's end, our Greyhound bus was travelling up the Hudson river line as Manhattan was lit up like Paris. I was listening to my walkman when the radio played this song. An absolute highlight of my life and one I haven't shared til now (who would believe me?). Thank you, Mr Joel, for one of those moments of life that make life worth living.

Another thing about Billy that I admire, besides his unbelievable genius, is that he is a shining example of determination and motivation and confidence. What’s oftentimes more important than a college degree, or even a high school diploma, is simply going all out for whatever interest you have. For him to quit high school to follow his dream of playing music…..not knowing what degree of success lay ahead….gives me goosebumps! Doing what he loves…… what he has a passion for…. is something most people never achieve.

Saw Billy Joel in summer of ‘76 backing up Jefferson Starship (still with Kantner, Slick & Balin). Before the concert thought Billy was just another middling top 40 artist. Blew my socks off. He’s one of the giants of American music, as this video clearly shows. Geniuses like him don’t come along often.

Billy Joel's "New York State of Mind" is an incredible masterpiece that showcases his exceptional talent as a musician, singer, and songwriter. The way he effortlessly blends soulful vocals with his piano skills is truly a gift from above. At my 32 years of age, I can attest that there's no one more original and iconic than Billy Joel. Even though I'm not from New York, this song, especially the sax solo, gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. Billy's music is like its own genre, and it's something we all cherish. His songs have the power to transport you to a time and place, a true testament to his amazing artistry. Long live the legend, Billy Joel! 🎹🗽🎵🔥

I was never a big Billy Joel fan back in the 70s. But this seriously impressed me. He's a better piano player than I remembered. Like, a serious player. It's funny when he really goes full on Ray Charles with his voice. I think it was his good friend Paul Simon who once said that Billy could imitate anyone, which could be a detriment because it made it harder for his natural voice to come out.

Live is always better than studio. It is real, raw and feeds off the audience. Music is all about the performance, in that moment. This is priceless! Thanks, Billy…

Woody Allen and Billy Joel made me realise that I'm a New Yorker who lives exactly on the other side of the world.

Wow he starts it very high and just when I thought that he’ll struggle he hits it clean, great performer. Old grey whistle test was a legendary show but now is iconic

    1. The way he handles the cigarette while simultaneously playing the piano - classy and a real historic timepiece. Ain't gonna see that ever again.
    2. The 1m30s saxophone accopello. I'm flawed. What a way to end an amazing performance.

Early Billy is best Billy. I'm 42 and grew up to your music. If not for you, I never would've had any appreciation for the ivory keys. Still rocking my stereo you magnificent bastard!
