My aunt who lived in Jersey City bought his greatest hits CD while visiting home in Indiana, and she said it was a total mistake, because listening to his music made her miss home SO much.
“New York State of Mind” (1976) was influenced by singer-songwriter-pianist Ray Charles, with whom Billy Joel did a duet in 1986 on the latter’s “Baby Grand.” Joel grew up in Long Island, near New York City. He had just returned after living in LA for several years. He authored this on the day he moved back from California to New York. He was taking a Greyhound on the Hudson River line when he started writing the song in a notebook. And as soon as he got home, he went to his piano and completed the music and lyrics in about an hour. The tune is about his love for New York, which he missed while he was away. In 2017, the artist said that “New York State of Mind” was HIS FAVORITE FROM HIS ENTIRE OEUVRE, because it “became a standard.” A STANDARD INDEED… WITH AN OUTSTANDINGLY CLEVER TITLE‼️ 💜🎹💛

You can feel his love affair with the city in his lyrics. The melody is truely on another level. If this song doesn't take you away with him then you are missing the intent of of the entire song. Chit Su his voice isn't really remarkable; he's just an average singer either an unremarkable voice. He sings in tune. And that's part of the charm of his music: it's written by an everyman, for the everyman.
I beg to differ, ieattapes, I think his voice is interesting...he uses so many different colors and styles, but without distorting the correct vocal placement. And he's STILL doing it at 70, up in that tenor range. So he and his voice are remarkable!
@@ieattapes i would largely agree but his range is incredibly remarkable, he goes fairly low and then shoots up into the upper range insanely fluidly and easily and that is just pure talent and skill

I love ❤️ Billy Joel! For people who are either mine or my sister’s age, he’s a staple of our generation. I haven’t been to New York that many times but I’ve watched a lot of Sex and the City and this song just reminds me of that show, especially since they’ve referenced it before.
As someone from New York state, this song has a special place in my heart because I come from up North, closer to Ottawa Ontario. There's more to New York than just the bottom half.
To me Billy Joel's music is the essence of America through music. I can just imagine cruising through the evening New York cityscape whilst this song plays.
+Clement Parkhill I went last year and the city encapsulates you, just like this amazing song encapsulates the city. It really is an incredible city and I really recommend that you go.
Well, I'd like to go, but there's a lot of places I haven't been that I'd like to go. And since I don't have much do re mi; I'll just have to wait for the next go round. (whatever that may mean)
as a native New Yorker... it's a real wild place, man. One minute you're taking in fine art at MOMA, the next you got a guy in rags tryin' to convince you to give him twenty bucks so he can pay the little green men in the sky to leave him alone, then a moment later you're gesturing aggressively at a cab that just ran a red and nearly flattened you and twenty other people crossing the street, and suddenly you're chilling on a bench in central park and just watching clouds pass over folk walking their dogs and playing with their kids, not a care in the world. No other place like it
I love this song so much. Especially the intro. This song is so beautiful, and I tear up every time I hear it. It’s just a masterpiece. One of the greatest Billy Joel songs.

I remember that it was the music that played in the taxi that took me from the airport to Manhattan. The city was taking shape against the light of this beautiful end of the day, I discovered New York for the first time in my life to the beautiful voice of Billy Joel. The girl I loved was waiting for me a few blocks away. The perfect song for this perfect moment. This music is the most beautiful memory of my life. Of course I never experienced this magical moment, I've never been loved by a girl, I've never had the chance to travel anywhere, but still this music makes me experience this moment every time I listen to it. Thank for all Billy Joel, thanks for the moments, thanks for the magic. The one that spread out of your music is real.
First visited NYC in June 2016. The days were hot and city was buzzing, full of life and wonder; I fell for it instantly. As soon as I visit again, I’m playing this as I walk the blocks.

This was “Our Song” while dating my husband who grew up in NYC. We would drive into “The City” to visit family, see a show, eat good deli, visit Barnes & Nobles Used Book Store in Manhattan, every couple of months listening to this song on tape player.
When you sit alone, quiet time, jotting down your thoughts and feelings.. New York State of Mind comes across to a southern gal. Billy made a masterpiece to everyone no matter who you are or where you hail from.
This guy captures the rhythm of NY along with the cool funk of the night life. One has to appreciate the sounds this song delivers! Even if you live in Hawaii. !!!
I'd be honored if some fans of the Nylon Curtain album (often called Billy Joel's finest work) would check out my acoustic piano & vocal cover of ALLENTOWN in tribute to the Master on my channel. Real live acoustic with no editing. Thanks and please pardon the promo.
Nice Video! Forgive me for the intrusion, I would love your opinion. Have you thought about - Marnaavid Unexplainable Intervention (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now)? It is a smashing exclusive guide for learning how to hack your flow state without the hard work. Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my friend at last got excellent results with it.
Check out Lords Of 52nd Street. Included in the band is Liberty DiVito and Joe Cannata? Never remember his name properly. David Clark, great Billy Joel.
YES!!! I have been looking for this version of the song for SO LONG! This has the far superior saxophone part in my opinion. The first copy of Greatest Hits Vol 1 & 2 had this version, but I literally wore that tape out. The replacement copy had an entirely different sax part, much brassier, less bluesy, and I hated it. Thank you for posting this much better version! Why on earth did they re-record the sax part?!?
My understanding is Billy had a falling out with Cannata (the original sax player), and from 1985 on, every subsequent version had the new sax part. I hated that sax, as it screamed for attention. Like you, I was more preferential to the bluesy, laid-back sax, of the original. As someone who was raised (11 years old) on Billy Joel, since '73 (Piano Man), you immediately recognize the slightest change(s), which is why I dont prefer live versions. This change was, indeed, egregious.
I don't think Mark Rivera is an _awful_ sax player, but I can definitely say Richie Cannata is better by far. Him and the rest of the OG Billy Joel band were part of what made this album (and all of the Phil Ramone produced albums) so amazing! RIP Doug Stegmeyer, long live the Lords of 52nd Street.
Saw him with Elton John on “Back 2 Back Tour” in Birmingham. I was in the best possible company, and it was awesome to see the legends in their duality tickling the ivories as only they can!!! 🦋💜🎶💙🦋

I lay down lonely in my room here on the island tonight and I dream of a future where I can feel the way this song has always made me feel. To live and die in New York...a foreign born person who doesn’t feel like she belongs here but who has only ever known New York as her one true Home. I hope one day to be part of every note and feeling this evokes.

All native New Yorkers know exactly what he's singing about.

Classic song from a classic album. Turnstiles is my favorite Billy Joel album.
Thanks for uploading the original…!
I’ve been looking for the Richie’s sax version but every songs are almost replaced by the new one. I strongly prefer the old.
My friend sung this in our school's Spring Concert the other day and she was phenomenal! This song is great!
I was listening to this song near brooklyn bridge. Then an italian greyhound passed by literally at the phrase 'taking a greyhound on a hudson river line'... best moment ever. Love this song so much
You still got it Billy, thank you
You say that when someone gets old... Not when they're in their prime.

I'm here in 2024!! I've been to NYC many times but this song gives me chills every time!
This was “Our Song” while dating my husband who grew up in NYC. We would drive into “The City” to visit family, see a show, eat good deli, visit Barnes & Nobles Used Book Store in Manhattan, every couple of months listening to this song on tape player.
Miss the days of morals ,values big family gatherings respect and dignity!
Agreed. Greetings from Canada. Saw him last fall in Boston. Still got it.
lol do you really think people didnt snort a ton of coke, cheated on their wives and did orgys? I wish I was so naive❤
Was in New York in the mid eighties and this songs brings that trip back, good memories of a very different world, time, place thanx for posting.
You just gotta go to NYC and play this stunning masterpiece of a song.
Billy Joel greatest artist of ALL TIME! BEEN TO 3 OF HIS CONCERTS AS A TEENAGER. THE BEST
Lucky
Classic, one of a few truly classic songs that still sound amazing all these years later
Probably the best song about NYC ever written.
Has any artist ever captured the feel of a place with a song? Billy Joel-- musical genius!
He does it perfectly with Scenes from an Italian Restaurant as well as New York State of Mind
that was a perfect studio gig - and you are a singer - man you impressed me so much ... thank you Billy Joel
joel is a master piano player and love all the instrumentation in this.
From new york born and raised..Now Florida...Love NYC
This song will forever inspire me to do something with my life and be known as someone, so thank you Billy Joel for inspiring me.
When you sit alone, quiet time, jotting down your thoughts and feelings.. New York State of Mind comes across to a southern gal.
Billy made a masterpiece to everyone no matter who you are or where you hail from.
Missing the City right now. For all of us traveling. Hit like if you are missing home!!! Happy Holidays Everyone.
This guy captures the rhythm of NY along with the cool funk of the night life. One has to appreciate the sounds this song delivers! Even if you live in Hawaii. !!!
Awesome. Billy Joel is a legend. Like if you agree.
Like hunter lol :p
I'd be honored if some fans of the Nylon Curtain album (often called Billy Joel's finest work) would check out my acoustic piano & vocal cover of ALLENTOWN in tribute to the Master on my channel. Real live acoustic with no editing. Thanks and please pardon the promo.
Thunderbirds501 Of course he's a legend but shut up and get a life instead of begging for likes.
Agreed. The superior original w the great Richie Cannata. This is also exactly how the bebop-style coda should be!
The greatest city in the world.
So did I back in 1987 when I first came upon this masterpiece....
i'm in japan, but this song fly me to NY city in a moment always.

Mustang Ok, NEW YORKER
@@yujacha8933 I am a new yorker
Saw him with Elton John on “Back 2 Back Tour” in Birmingham. I was in the best possible company, and it was awesome to see the legends in their duality tickling the ivories as only they can!!! 🦋💜🎶💙🦋
I’ve been to New York 5 times to visit my friend and I always listen to this song as I’m riding my bus into the city 🌃
Dreaming of a New York trip with this song playing in my earphones. 😌 #OneDay #Someday
I do this song on the guitar and sing it, but without the piano it just doesn't have the same impact. Billy Joel is simply a genius.
Performance of Jemimah in Indonesian Idol 2021, with song: New York State of Mind (Billy Joel), it's really nice, kindly watch: th-cam.com/video/rkdki3a-NcE/w-d-xo.html
I first found Billy Joel's music 10 years ago at 19 & been a fan ever since but I do remember hearing my aunt play River of Dreams when I was a kid in the 90's so maybe the music found me long before 🎹😊💖📝💃🎶
Veramente unica questa canzone .... Billy il più versatile songwriter del pianeta !!!❤️👑
I grew up playing this masterpiece on my bedroom stereo in the early 80s. Nothing compares, and nobody else can sing it like Billy.
Just love it, one of the best songs ever, for me.
I'm from sotland and have never been to New York..... one day.
Great song btw. :-)
One of my favorite places, I'm fortunate enough to live an hour east of NYC. The energy of the city never gets old for me.
Colin nothing like visit NYC no disrespect to Scotland
I lay down lonely in my room here on the island tonight and I dream of a future where I can feel the way this song has always made me feel. To live and die in New York...a foreign born person who doesn’t feel like she belongs here but who has only ever known New York as her one true Home. I hope one day to be part of every note and feeling this evokes.
