Right at the beginning of the film when they are having fun on the beach, a helicopter flies towards the sea. I live in Rio, there are no islands in that direction. That was the army on its way to throw people, living and dead, into the high seas. The film is full of these details.
The final report from the government commission investigating Rubens Paiva’s de@th also mentions that was the final fate of his remains, after they had kept it buried for two years to be unrecognizable
that detail end me while i was watching, in other scenes, wen she's alone in her room late at night and she ear an see an helicopter passing by, intantanely made me took her place and think "what if the body of my love one is there right now, beeing throughout like garbage into seas".. that's brutal.
Yes!! It was so subtle and delicate in how it portraited realizing you're never going to relive those memories with someone you loved ever again because they're not coming back. It hits so hard because a lot of us experience that sort of realization whenever we lose someone important to us and try to go on with our lives: those little moments together are never coming back, and that's why it hurts so much.
To this day, the Paiva family has not been able to bury this beloved father. His killers are now free and receive pensions. Only this week was his death certificate updated as a violent death by force of the state. A delicate point in this film is the death of Pimpão, the dog. Do you realize that the dog had a dignified burial, something that was denied to a family man? In a way, this film is Rubens Paiva's body and also his tomb. Today the world cannot deny that he existed!
Let's remember he's not the only one, there's many more were victims of the dictatorship. This movie shouldn't be just about Paiva's family, but it's a reminder of what the militar regime was capable of making. If that's what they made to a politician, what were they capable of doing to a average Joe? The number of victims it's probably HIGHER than 10k, with less than 600 being recognized as "true" victims. Paiva's family was a privileged one, with a still privileged ending. Unfortunately, it's the truth. Please let's remember of those who are now erased from history and memory.
@@FingolfinLSwhen they're not part of the discussion, yes it is. Even more when the comment is saying only about the Paiva's family not being able to bury their father, what about the others? I'm not saying to not give them empathy, we should! It was a tragedy!! But we must remember they're not the only family that suffered on the regime. It was not a one time thing. It was not just because Paiva's was socialist. Many innocent people were killed and weren't even connected to any social movement. It was horrible in a larger scale. We need to remember our history, and yes, it must include the other missing people on the discussion. Paiva's family maybe wasn't able to bury, but at least it's well known he was murdered on the regime. What. About. The. Others? We need to think a little bit more than just the one family depicted on the movie.
One thing I’d like to highlight, besides the amazing performance of Torres, is the outstanding acting of the actor who plays the father of the family. He is so charismatic and likable that when he’s gone, we as viewers truly feel his absence-we can feel the VOID he left in the family. This is only possible because the actor did an excellent job. It’s also a credit to the director, who crafted everything perfectly to make us feel this way.
Selton Melo é um.excelente ator. Ele atua desde criança. Nascido em passos, MG, Brasil. Ele disse que conseguiu absorver a experiencia de fazer um personagem pai e com filhos baseado no seu pai. Uma inspiraçao.
Selton Melo, Fernanda Torres e Walter Salles... Alguns dos grandes nomes do audiovisual brasileiro estão nesse filme. Selton (o ator que interpreta o pai) é fantástico! E assim como Fernanda, ele é muito versátil
7:24 just want to clarify: not really militia, these where government official. Rubens' torture and murder, as well as many others brazilians at the time, was not only state sanctioned but made fully legal.
In the book, Paiva says it was not legal, since even the 1969 Constitution still obligated the government to inform the prisoner's family of his/her whereabouts. The police didn't care, though.
I'm going to add a little more context to the film: All of of the songs that the family listens in the house are musics from musicians that got censured during the dictarshiop and the songs that we listen on the radios are popular songs, but from artists that were complict with the regime. Walter was very clever about that, but again: you have to be brazillian to know that I really dont know why it didnt got nominated for adapted screanplay :(
@dabreu yeah, the artists who were censured were brazillians, plus at the time, almost nobody knew french, so foreign songs didnt got censured at the time.
As a Brazilian, watching the movie made me cry. So many people think Brazil has always been the fun, loose vibe, football-loving country. It has not. This movie clearly displays how Brazil has a dark and moving history. Hopefully, it wins!
I mean... it kinda has. It has always been many things at once. But the liberal side of Brazilian society isn't really new and I see it quite obviously even in Portuguese and Spanish society. When you look at liberal policies you also see that Latin America tends to join Western Europe compared to the more conservative US + Eastern Europe.
With these 3 Oscars nominations it makes me think that the reason Fernanda was not nominated at anywhere else but the globes is: people were NOT watching the movie. Everything changed for her and I'm Still Here after her win for Actress in Drama. I still think Demi is the frontrunner but we should not count her out. I really hope the movie beats out Emília Perez for international feature ❤
so true and since she is not competing for the other awards, I think it only makes the Oscar result more unpredictable. there will be no metric for comparison and there may be surprises.
@@danxavier25 also, how does the BAFTA and SAG awards treat international movies? I feel like these awards ceremonies are not so well known outside of the English-speaking countries communities, that's why I think they also don't care all that much about international movies
@@willgpb_I can say that most people don't even know about these festivals, at least in Latin America. Only the Oscars are really watched by the masses (Relatively), the Golden Globes and Cannes have been heard of.
Fernanda is an actress who is very present on Brazilian television as a comedian. We always expect something funny when she appears on screen, and in this particular film, it was impossible to remember her acting comically. Can you imagine how difficult that is?
@@gabrielfarias6709 It's also very american to think discussions about black people happen the same way as they do in the US. Blackface has a much darker and more prevalent history in the US, then it ever did in Brazil.
The film was shot chronologically, that's the reason it seems so real ❤ And the ice cream scene Fernanda said that she cried 10 minutes after did it, a true actress!!
I’ve never seen a movie like this before! It’s so different and incredibly profound/dramatic, even without all the flashy cameras and effects. The Two Fernandas (Torres and Montenegro) are absolute rare gems!
Brazilian here. My grandfather was kidnapped by the military in 1964 during the beginning of the military dictatorship. He was tortured for more than a week. I could feel what he suffered when I watched this movie.
I watch this movie yesterday and I am still think about it. Not because of Oscar or anything like that. I just think about some aspects of the movie. Sometimes the theme, sometimes about... details... but I keep thinking and remembering it. I think this rare nowadays where movies are just... entertainment. And there is nothing wrong about it. I just keep thinking... how difficult if for a familly being in that situation, for instance. And BTW Fernanda Torres was well know by amazing comedic performances, one in particular is the 2007's movie "Basic Sanitation, the movie" by Jorge Furtado. You will see another Fernanda. Last thing is... besides being a Brazilian film I think the story is kinda ... universal. If you transpose this movie to the old USSR, Argentina, Spain, etc... with few adaptations it still works. People in Asia, Middle-east, Africa, Latin America an many other places can undestand easily what is going on. You dont need to know anything about Brazil to enjoy the movie... however if you know something... then the experience is much more intense IMHO.
The film dominates the mind and stays resonating. The fact that it talks about memory, loss, and family. All of this makes it brilliant compared to many disposable films that are competing with it.
Only those who haven't seen "I'm Still Here" are surprised. Fernanda Torres winning the Globe and the fire creating a window of time gave voters the opportunity to get to know the film and be enchanted by its power and message. As the actress herself said, "I know the art of the world, but the world doesn't know what we produce. I feel sorry for those who don't know our art." The fact that it needs to be legitimized by an award and a tragedy like the one in Los Angeles happens for voters to give it a chance and discover that someone other than the US and Europe has good stories to tell? Really, it's worth feeling sorry for those who end up losing these works of art, or rather, I'm happy that GRINGOS are getting a glimpse of what they're missing.
I'm Still Here gives the world a chance to watch Fernanda's performance, but more importantly to remember history in times of neck breathing fascism. Also, this is US history, given that they planned and financed Operation Condor fascist coups in Brazil and other Latin American countrys. Go watch it people
I think I'm Still Here has a shot against Emilia Perez in Best International Movie solely because of the backlash the movie has received lately, meanwhile I'm Still Here is only being praised and more praised as time goes on. Also, Emilia Perez has so many American actors it barely counts as "internacional"
Fernanda carries the weight of thousands of people who lost their loved ones during the military dictatorship. She manages to show life as it is. Eunice couldn't grieve the loss of her husband because she had an entire family to raise in the midst of a dark period that struck Brazil. Fernanda is the voice of many.
As Fernanda Torres mentioned in Jimmy Kimmel live, it's important to understand the Brazilian military dictatorship as part of the Cold War, as all dictatorships across Latin America in the same period. All of them were fostered by the United States, the military was trained by the CIA and the US government sustained the regimen in international stage. When Torres says that "you Americans are very good at selling your culture", we all know what she really meant: it's the imperialist impositions we deal with everyday. "I'm Still Here", Fernanda, Selton and Walter deserve all awards. For Eunice, for us all. ❤️🇧🇷
The ice cream shop scene is the cover of the film. Rumor has it that this scene will win her an Oscar. Not to mention that the engagement around Fernanda is something never seen before, the Golden Globes announced that it was the biggest in its history with an increase of 120% compared to 2023.
I think all the nominated actors did a great job but Fernanda Torres is in another level. The ice cream scene broke my heart. If you consider the world political situation this movie hits you even harder.
I'm Still Here and The Seed Of The Sacred Fig losing the "best international film" category to Emilia Pérez is absurd in so many levels. I don't even hate EP, but like... seriously?
@@juliana_melo was about to respond that! that movie deserves all the hate for every single reason. its amazing how bad a movie has to be for both people on the lgbt side, and those against it to hate it equaly. it really is a movie of all time...
A brief explanation about our passion for this film: -Not only is the movie fantastic, but it's also our memory. Like the USA, we are also facing the growth of the right wing in Brazil. Salles said the movie was not possible in the previous government (military supported). A film like "I'm Still Here' is a good way to remind us what an authoritarian government can be; -"I'm Sill Here' is another great movie by Walter Salles starring a "Fernanda". For us Brazilians, "Central Station" and "Fernanda Montenegro" should win the Oscar in 1999. Any win would be a celebration, but "Best Actress" will have a "reparation" feeling; -Brazil has great movies that are recognized around the world but have never won any Oscars. We have this feeling that we deserve the recognition a long time. Also it will be the first time for the young brazilians generation to watch the Oscar hopping for a win.
Demi's speech in the GG might be what gets her the Oscar 😂 She talked about being a "popcorn" actress and I think that fear resonates very well with any artist, especially in the movie industry. I imagine every member of the Academy has feared at some point that their work was nothing more than meaningless entertainment and would fade and be forgotten with time. By giving Demi the Oscar, they would be "beating" that fear in a way. I loved Demi's performance and The Substance, but as a show of acting, it was not the best of the year. Fernanda's character was much more challenging to portray (more subtle, nuanced) and she nailed it from start to finish. In terms of quality and performance, the Oscars should go to Fernanda, but I think there is so much talk and good will surrounding Demi that she might be awarded the Oscar for what she represents rather than for the quality of a specific performance. The sad politics of life 😢
This film is such an important cultural happening in Brazil. Its extreme quality is filling the whole country with pride right now. We see the world of cinema contemplating and feeling the memory of some of the toughest times in our country, and this shows us that a different future is possible. Its a difficult story that gives us hope and at the same time courage to face hardships. When you see brazilians really trilled with this film in comment sections on social media posts, don't judge us. Its just our happiness seeing our story being recognized as something universal, that can be cherished by everyone.
I have watched many reviews of this movie but have not watched it yet. I'm worried about my reaction to the cinema because I felt emotional only after watching these reviews. It will be at the AMC cinema where I live in the US beginning on February 6.
Don’t be afraid! It’s such a beautiful movie! I've watched it like three times and cried. It's hard to explain the feelings I had but even crying I want to watch again and again because it's sad but so beautiful at same time. That family is inspiring and the mesage of the film is so important!
Assista.
a smart thing the director did, in my opinion, is that he shot the movie in chronological order. so the cast was actually having a great time with the actor that plays Rubens. then, the day they shot Rubens being taken away by the military agents was literally the last day of the actor on set. so the cast was also missing him while shooting the rest of the movie, not only the characters.
The realism in this movie is mind-blowing. I’m Brazilian, and we are all very happy that this work is receiving the recognition it deserves. But it's worth mentioning that, as much as you may be impacted by this film, the experience of Brazilians who have so many similarities at home with the family in the movie, and see themselves represented in it, is overwhelming. Fernanda Montenegro portraying Eunice as an elderly woman with Alzheimer’s was the best cinematic representation of the disease I have ever seen. Watching it, I felt like I was seeing my late grandmother. Fernanda Torres was simply perfect, in every detail, just a mother holding it together for her kids while facing the horrors of authoritarianism. Anyway, love the video 😄
You described very well what this film means. Believe me, the dictatorship here left us orphans in many ways. Thank you for recognizing this work of art.
Let me tell you: you guys have some talent. You managed a review that is descriptive, compelling, infatuating and sincere without pouring down spoilers. Your command of the language shows poetry in your appreciation and this movie is all deserved of your efforts. From the bottom of my heart: thank you very much.
Ainda estou aqui representa, de maneira impecável, uma ferida que ainda se encontra aberta na memória do Brasil. Fernanda Torres é nosso orgulho nacional, esperamos que ela ganhe. Muito obrigado pelo review sincero. Grande abraço!
This film is an absolute masterpiece, beautifully crafted and Fernanda Torres is stunning. Her acting skills are superb. It's so difficult to do what she's done in this film. BRAVA!
A thing that gets me about the first 30 minutes is that while they are endearing and peacefull there's so many hints - specially if you know about brazilian history - that Something Bad is going to happen. As someone mentioned here (and I myself learned it) the helicopter over them in the first beach scene is going nowhere - to dispose the bodies and kill others. You can also see the military cars in the background. The news are clearly about militicia action against the militars. Every disco and songs played inside the house is from artists who were being censored and/or persecuted for being against the sistem (wich is why when the militar man are in the Paiva househood they go around noticing the discos) while all of the music played on the radio is from artists who supported the regime (some like Roberto Carlos who are still very famous to this day). When the eldest daugther is talking about going to Europe and in her first letter the family reads still together she mentions wanting to met the Beatles and brazilian singer Caetano, she later mentions having met other brazilian singe Gilberto Gil, at the time both were in Europe fause they were exiled from Brazil by the Regime (and theirs was the fate of the lucky with fame and money). Is lovely but you know that not only is not going to last but other people in the background are already living through the terror the Paivas are going to.
Amazing film and casting. As a Brazilian woman and a such a little girl at that tragic moment of our history, it was actually very touching. I could take in the “zeitgeist” at all, the atmosphere, but even more important of all, I could remember the sensations seeing each object on the table, the furniture, songs, clothes etc… The house is also a character. Please, people, watch the film. I’m proud, that is it!!
Awards moments like this are the reason to appreciate what the Academy Awards can be capable of. Very cool, special, and significantly helpful for the filmmakers! ❤ Looking forward to watching this.
amazing point of view and sensibility. as a Brazilian this review made me so emotional and proud that people from other countries are being touched. it is important for us that our history doesn’t desapear and may we learn to never let that happen again. it’s something so close to the passionate millennials online because our parents grew up on that tension of a military government. in USA you are almost facing a dictatorship, we must be vigilant and active. Fernanda Torres is brilliant, not only on this film and drama movies, but she’s the opposite doing the funniest and over the top comedic roles on tv, we grew up watching her, and on stage theater she gives it all. she has a few books too, amazing fiction writer, she’s also very funny and intellectual and smart and quirky on interviews. enjoy knowing this gifted human. thanks for the support!
Definitely I'm still here worth the hype!! It's amazing, authentic, pure cinema! I hope they win this Oscar and we can go back to the good old days of cinema, without AI!!!
They’ll win best international feature film and best actress. Maybe even best picture! There’s a reason behind those 3 nominations. The Oscars want to bring back real gut wrenching films back!
i have wondered how a foreigner might react to the movie differently from me and those i know, who knew from the start exactly what happened rubens. every single second of happiness he shared with his family was a punch to the gut
"I'm still here" is so deep. The picture was filmed chronologically. This is so rare and makes it even more special. The whole cast is amazing. Fernanda Torres is an incredible actor. She is great in drama and comedy. She definitely deserves the Oscars. She is also a Cannes winner. If you didn't watch it go to the cinema to check it out.
I'm from Brazil and watched this as soon as was in cinema. One of the things that makes this movie so incredible is the way it catches you, how the sadness just floods you, as a brazilian. At the end of the movie absolutely everybody in the room was crying - hard. Amazing movie, a necessary movie.
Thanks for the review! More than art, this film is needed for the far-right wind with which our society is flirting once again. As a Brazilian movie, it captures the core of our family boundaries and dynamics-so beautiful. I got emotional and was very proud to see part of our history be so well shown to the world.
It is a true masterpiece! We need stories like this to be real-time aware of how democracies need to be nourished. Walter Salles is a unique director and Torres’s performance is mesmerizing.
I’m Still Here is a cinematic masterpiece that delves deep into the resilience of the human spirit. Directed with breathtaking sensitivity, the film captures the delicate interplay between loss, memory, and the unyielding power of hope. Its visual poetry and haunting narrative draw the audience into an intimate exploration of love and survival, painting a portrait of humanity that is both raw and transcendent. With performances that are nothing short of extraordinary, I’m Still Here lingers in the heart and mind, a timeless testament to the enduring strength of those who refuse to be forgotten. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 A masterpiece
One thing that I think is worth talking about is when the military enter the house and close the windows; the sound of the windows being shut is like razors. This movie is amazing.
In the current moment the world is experiencing, with the strengthening of extremist, intolerant ideas that threaten the integrity of minorities, this film is like a wake up call for today's society to understand how harmful dictatorships and authoritarian governments can be for ordinary citizens, not just in Brazil, but all over the world. There is a powerful message behind this film through Torres' breathtaking performance that presents us with Eunice in the most faithful way. How she tried to stifle her feelings like a rock in the name of the integrity of the family and the memory of her husband, despite the earthquake inside of the heart and mind. An extremely difficult and complex real life character to make. A film that addresses real events in an honest way, without appeal. A right film at the right time. Masterpiece! That said, Fernanda Torres and “I’m Stil Here” definitely deserve the Oscar this year.
Amazing video, guys! I’m a Brazilian and it’s very interesting to see how the film is being perceived in other countries. I hope it wins best international e actress. Fernanda is truly incredible, we have been loving her for a while now… and we are very eager to share her work with the world. :)
I'm seeing comments that Fernanda's performance is not good and the film is bad, as it is a film based on real events, a story about a family that suffered during the military dictatorship and Fernanda managed to convey all the pain and strength of Eunice Paiva, the "experts" here think that crying, messing up, hitting, screaming and real acting I have news, you have a very superficial view of what acting is, combined with the fact that Fernanda is Latina also shows the size of the prejudice too.
@@osvaldopereira7732 What ?! The french don't care about Emilia Perez, and even less about the Oscars LMAO. They haven't cared for celebirty culture and Hollywood for a long time buddy. And they have Cannes, which is better, and the Cesars, which is more national, to care about (and they just shit on it).
one very interesting thing that Fernanda said on an interview is that she wanted to convey that the dictatorship also crept into family dynamics: Eunice had to extend the pretending to not know, pretending that everything is fine and censoring to her children so they wouldn't accidentaly get them in even greater dancer. spectacular acting
At the same time, people from the far-right here in Brazil who claim to be “patriotic” keep denying the truth behind this film and try to boycott it, using fake news to claim it to be communist propaganda because they support the military dictatorship and believe it was a good regime which was bad only to enemies of the state. These supporters include our unfortunate former president, Jair Bolsonaro, who once publicly praised a known torturer from this time period. As a Brazilian, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for bringing attention to this masterwork of our cinema and our historical memory. Much love to you all! ❤🇧🇷
Guys, this was the best review I've seen of I'm Still Here and Fernanda Torres' performance! You captured every aspect of the film with great sensitivity and depth, and you perfectly understood the script choices, the director's decisions, Fernanda's acting style, the importance of each scene, the variations in the photography, the greater meaning of the film, and the message it proposes: talking about memory! You understood everything so perfectly that you should give a lesson to the critics from the New Yorker and Le Monde, the only ones who criticized (unfairly) the film. The first called the film "cowardly" because he didn't understand Salles' choice not to show the torture that Rubens Paiva suffered, since his intention was for the story to be centered on the family, from the point of view that they experienced it, so that the viewer could identify with it. And the second one found Fernanda's performance "monotonous", because he was unable to understand that her emotions were purposefully contained, as she played a mother who suppressed her feelings to try to keep the trauma of their father's disappearance away from her children, and that this type of performance is much more difficult and meaningful than if it were melodramatic. But since you are excellent film critics, you understood all of this, and you also moved me deeply with the sensitivity you had in interpreting the film! As a Brazilian and a film fan, I thank you for this beautiful review, I became a fan of yours! ❤️😊
"I'm Still Here" was so impactful that it made the Brazilian government (of course, it was already in the process) change Rubens Paiva's death certificate and add that his death was because of the current government (military dictatorship). "I'm Still Here", above all, is relevant to the history of Brazil.
What a beautiful and sensible review! It’s a big joy to us brazilians witnessing people from all over the world seeing this movie. To me it’s a very important message to get through during these times. Thank you for sharing!
I don't know if foreigners understand the dimension of this movie. It's from the little details, you know? I was talking to grandma, who lived in Rio in the 70s and she was like "They even use coke to tan like we did when I was young!" The production design of the movie is unreal!!! The way they managed to ser a city 50 years in the past, the perfect reconatruction of the house (it was a different house bc the real one is not there anymore, but they found another one and it was perfect). The cars are not digital, they got a bunch of collectors to bring their old cars. And then the story. Only a country that lived a dictatorship can understand the impacts of it. I remember when I watched Argentina 1985 and the profound sadness I felt because Brazil didn't go through the process of criminalizing our dictators as Argentina did (and these two movies have such a good dialogue in this sense). I think people can imagine, but they can't feel what it is like to be still here, feeling the impacts of 30 years of dictatorship to the bones, to be here and see the right wing denying that a dictatorship happen ans how horrifying it was. And that's what makes this movie so special because, for me, it's not a movie about the dictatorship: it's a movie about memory. The memory of the presence of Rubens Paiva and the fight to preserve this memory that connects to the fight to preserve the memories of the dictatorship itself and then the memory of Eunice fading away because of Alzheimer and the memory of a country fading away as well. It's a movie to make us never forget and never forgive what our country went through keeping this memory alive so we can fight so it won't happen again.
Being from Brazil, from a family of people who fought against the military dictatorship, this movie touches a very deep place inside our collective consciousness. It’s a beautiful movie in the deepest sense of the word. Thanks for the meaningful review!
This filme os about Memories. "Aqueles que não conhecem a história, estão fadados à repeti-la." We have to remember, so we wont repeat the same mistakes. A timeless message. But, in the same time, a very "in time" messege. Let's not forget! We remember, so we won't let it repet ever again!
The father, Rubens Paiva had been a congressman and was kidnapped for political reasons by the government, military police agents, and thus killed through torture, though they never addmitted it.
Good job, guys. I remember your reaction-surprised by the film's nomination for the top award. And now, after watching and enjoying it, it shows that the film is gaining momentum. We can only hope that more people watch it and recognize its quality. Many believed it was merely a political gesture by the Academy, but the truth is that international cinema can resonate with American audiences. A lot will happen before Oscar night. And Fernanda will win "Best Actress" ❤ Warm greetings from Brazil !! 🇧🇷🇧🇷
Fernanda Torres will win. Most Americans haven’t seen the film, but, when they do, they’ll see how OUT OF THIS WORLD Fernanda’s acting is. She DELIVERS raw, emotional, REAL talent. There is no contender to her performance. Demi is great, but that is not even acting compared to what “I’m still here” has to offer. “The substance” is awesome, innovative and mind-blowing, but, when it comes to acting, there is not even a chance: real talent will prevail - and that bears the name of FERNANDA TORRES! 🇧🇷🏆🇧🇷🍾🇧🇷♥️🏆🇧🇷
Her restraint is the realest choice for that performance. Being a widow, mother of 5 kids with no access to the family funds without her husbands death certificate, against a state that has the monopoly of violence there is not much one could do. They can disappear you, torture you, murder you... Most people at that time just tried to keep on living. The ones that picked up arms resistance are heroes, as the whole situation is dangerous and hopeless.
A Fernanda é uma atriz de comédia, é incrível como ela conseguiu entregar uma performance tão devastadora. A mensagem do filme é incrível e trouxe de volta Eunice que é um excelente exemplo de resiliência, luta e força!
I want to live in the world where this wins in International Feature over Emilia Perez…

Yes, there is such an intense feeling throughout the movie that it really sticks with us.

Yes. Nice catch.
@@Imezita Remembering one is not forgetting others..
Fernanda Torres deserves the Oscar!!
nope
Fact!
Yeah
Hell yeah!
Totally!
Selton Melo said exactly that in an interview: he had 30 min to show how great Rubens Paiva was in order to honor his history.
Selton Melo é um.excelente ator. Ele atua desde criança. Nascido em passos, MG, Brasil. Ele disse que conseguiu absorver a experiencia de fazer um personagem pai e com filhos baseado no seu pai. Uma inspiraçao.
The actor even left set after the character was disappeared. So everyone would feel this void.
Selton Melo, Fernanda Torres e Walter Salles... Alguns dos grandes nomes do audiovisual brasileiro estão nesse filme. Selton (o ator que interpreta o pai) é fantástico! E assim como Fernanda, ele é muito versátil
Selton Mello's performance in this film would be worthy of an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. The world needed to discover this film sooner.
7:24 just want to clarify: not really militia, these where government official. Rubens' torture and murder, as well as many others brazilians at the time, was not only state sanctioned but made fully legal.
This!!
Yes, they used to dress and drive civillians clothes and cars to not bring attention to them.
!!!
In the book, Paiva says it was not legal, since even the 1969 Constitution still obligated the government to inform the prisoner's family of his/her whereabouts. The police didn't care, though.
Also, the coup d'etat and the dictatorship were supported by the US
I'm going to add a little more context to the film:
All of of the songs that the family listens in the house are musics from musicians that got censured during the dictarshiop and the songs that we listen on the radios are popular songs, but from artists that were complict with the regime.
Walter was very clever about that, but again: you have to be brazillian to know that
I really dont know why it didnt got nominated for adapted screanplay :(
I don't think all of them. They listened to Je t'aime Moi non plus. Thought it was controversial, we could listen to it on the radio all the time.
We still have a dark history to this day, the criminals took over the country
Walter Salles is such an underrated director. I hope he gets nominated for his next film
I really hope the movie beats out Emília Perez for international feature
❤
EXACTLY! people just needed to see the movie!
so true and since she is not competing for the other awards, I think it only makes the Oscar result more unpredictable. there will be no metric for comparison and there may be surprises.
People need to watch that movie!!!
Fernanda is an actress who is very present on Brazilian television as a comedian. We always expect something funny when she appears on screen, and in this particular film, it was impossible to remember her acting comically. Can you imagine how difficult that is?
@@powderman4070 Yes, she did it once in her 46-year career and apologized. Unfortunately, people make mistakes.

its like watching the Phoebe from friends playing on a drama movie
The film was shot chronologically, that's the reason it seems so real ❤
And the ice cream scene Fernanda said that she cried 10 minutes after did it, a true actress!!
Torres' acting is incredible. I had tears in my eyes during scenes where there was no dialogue. This movie is a masterpiece.
Fernanda's performance is spectacular 🎉
Fernanda Torres ❤❤❤❤
Fernanda Montenegro ❤❤❤❤
I’ve never seen a movie like this before! It’s so different and incredibly profound/dramatic, even without all the flashy cameras and effects. The Two Fernandas (Torres and Montenegro) are absolute rare gems!
Brazilian here. My grandfather was kidnapped by the military in 1964 during the beginning of the military dictatorship. He was tortured for more than a week. I could feel what he suffered when I watched this movie.
Sinto muito pela sua dor, Arthur
You dont need to know anything about Brazil to enjoy the movie... however if you know something... then the experience is much more intense IMHO.
so true!!! I don't see fernada, we know her VERY well. I only see Eunice.
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I'm Still Here gives the world a chance to watch Fernanda's performance, but more importantly to remember history in times of neck breathing fascism. Also, this is US history, given that they planned and financed Operation Condor fascist coups in Brazil and other Latin American countrys. Go watch it people
I think I'm Still Here has a shot against Emilia Perez in Best International Movie solely because of the backlash the movie has received lately, meanwhile I'm Still Here is only being praised and more praised as time goes on. Also, Emilia Perez has so many American actors it barely counts as "internacional"
Besides all this, there seems to be much ai generated content in Emília Peres
Fernanda carries the weight of thousands of people who lost their loved ones during the military dictatorship. She manages to show life as it is. Eunice couldn't grieve the loss of her husband because she had an entire family to raise in the midst of a dark period that struck Brazil. Fernanda is the voice of many.
Fernanda Torres for the win 🎉🎉🎉
Here from Brazil, we are very proud of this movie and Fernanda's performance. She nailed it. Deserves a Oscar!
Fernanda's performance reminds people what acting is: an art in itself not dependente on nothing else but... well...acting
If only some movies remembered that cof cof Brutalist cof cof EmilIA Perez cof cof
I don't even hate EP, but like... seriously?

A brief explanation about our passion for this film:
-Not only is the movie fantastic, but it's also our memory. Like the USA, we are also facing the growth of the right wing in Brazil. Salles said the movie was not possible in the previous government (military supported). A film like "I'm Still Here' is a good way to remind us what an authoritarian government can be;
-"I'm Sill Here' is another great movie by Walter Salles starring a "Fernanda". For us Brazilians, "Central Station" and "Fernanda Montenegro" should win the Oscar in 1999. Any win would be a celebration, but "Best Actress" will have a "reparation" feeling;
-Brazil has great movies that are recognized around the world but have never won any Oscars. We have this feeling that we deserve the recognition a long time. Also it will be the first time for the young brazilians generation to watch the Oscar hopping for a win.

Demi's speech in the GG might be what gets her the Oscar 😂
She talked about being a "popcorn" actress and I think that fear resonates very well with any artist, especially in the movie industry.
The sad politics of life 😢

i love underdog stories like this film
a smart thing the director did, in my opinion, is that he shot the movie in chronological order. so the cast was actually having a great time with the actor that plays Rubens. then, the day they shot Rubens being taken away by the military agents was literally the last day of the actor on set. so the cast was also missing him while shooting the rest of the movie, not only the characters.
The interrogation scene is incredible.
Great review, guys! I can’t wait to watch this movie ASAP. Not sure if it will be in the theatres in Canada 😢
Apparently it will be released in January 31st but I'm not entirely sure
This Friday, Jan 31th, it opens in Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal.
It will be in Canada for sure!

Fernanda Torres deserves this award, she’s such a good actress and she plays this character with so much sensibility. It’s really beautiful!

One thing that I think is worth talking about is when the military enter the house and close the windows; the sound of the windows being shut is like razors. This movie is amazing.
GREAT review. I absolutely LOVED the film, i really think it deserves all 3 oscar wins!

I'm seeing comments that Fernanda's performance is not good and the film is bad, as it is a film based on real events, a story about a family that suffered during the military dictatorship and Fernanda managed to convey all the pain and strength of Eunice Paiva, the "experts" here think that crying, messing up, hitting, screaming and real acting I have news, you have a very superficial view of what acting is, combined with the fact that Fernanda is Latina also shows the size of the prejudice too.

one very interesting thing that Fernanda said on an interview is that she wanted to convey that the dictatorship also crept into family dynamics: Eunice had to extend the pretending to not know, pretending that everything is fine and censoring to her children so they wouldn't accidentaly get them in even greater dancer. spectacular acting
The best vídeo about I Am Still here. Congrats from Brazil
We are so proud! Thank you for this review

We have to remember, so we wont repeat the same mistakes. A timeless message. But, in the same time, a very "in time" messege. Let's not forget! We remember, so we won't let it repet ever again!
Fernanda Torres best actress! 👸👏👏👏👏👏

Very complete review! Amazing movie for sure an Oscar contender and well deserved if it wins 2 or more Oscars.
And Fernanda will win "Best Actress" ❤
Warm greetings from Brazil !!
