unfortunately, arena shooters have this nasty tendency to market themselves exclusively towards the old heads who played them in their peak popularity, which not only markets towards a far too small and resistant to change playerbase, but also creates a longstaning barrier of entry. Little timmy is gonna have no fun getting crossmapped to death by a 40 year old who's been honing their skills at these games for 20 years.
Sometimes I think they just should do a remaster of UT2004 with some addons. Couple of more guns, couple of more vehicles and gamemodes, some more new characters and an extended campaign.
No need to remaster every game in todays lazy graphics and decreasing the quality of how the original was all about . There are modders that still does maps, vehicles and skins for UT2004 similar for UT99 today and for free . I don't like the urge in polishing everything in some video games . Some games are best left how they were made first . The weapons from UT99 are much better surely the sound . Ut2k4 is more pew-pew kid friendly guns and somehow looks like those in Serious Sam 2 . - The Shock Rifle or Instagib sound is more violent in UT99 . - The Rocket Launcher is more effective in UT99 as you can throw 7 rockets instead of 3 in UT2k4 . - The Sniper Rifle is better designed in Ut2k4 i agree but the UT99 is smoother . - The Flak Cannon has more projectiles in UT99 than Ut2k4 - The Minigun seems awkward and is reversed primal & secondary weapon mode in the Ut2k4 . - The Redeemer explosion + sound is better executed in UT99 than in Ut2k4 . The more some games advance in time the more it decrease in quality it seems . Biggest example is the gun sounds from Doom Playstation 1 & Nintendo 64 far superior and more original than the ones in Doom 2016 & Doom Eternal which doesn't offer the feeling to have "real guns" between your hand but toys . Similar goes for Racing Games the car engines V6 or V12 found in Flatout 1 and some cars from Flatout 2 are more realistic than those in Wreckfest , Flatout 4 whose sounds more like micromachines cars .
How funny is it that the ability to load so many rockets up would be much more useful in ut2004 with the structures you could damage and the big vehicles rather than ut99 itself, a 3 rocket burst seems much much better suited for deathmatch, you absolutely cannot load 7 rockets while someone's trying to fight you unless they're terrible and even if it were like that in 2004 it wouldn't be much better than just firing or using a different weapon. You'll kill a goliath with a flak cannon faster than loading 7 rockets for a burst, the really fast vehicles will get away from your lock on and unless the powernode is undefended you'll get fragged by base defenders. So its functionality of firing more rockets in a burst doesn't seem all that useful or practical and is just for show. The flak cannon having less shells was probably a balance change so you can't destroy someone with shields instantaneously. The burst is still enough to one shot a normal opponent. I don't understand how the minigun feels awkward, unless you meant that the modes being switched makes it awkward which I do agree is a weird change. If you mean that the more precise firing mode is not as accurate as the original's equivalent well then it'd make sense, pick a more accurate weapon for more accurate shots. The sfx complaints about ut games and modern vs old games in general are very moot, a few examples even if they are proven right are a strawman, they're still a few handpicked examples. It's also a very boomer-y thing to say and is just subjective, I think the shock rifle sounds better in 2004 and it actually has an absolutely explosive and what I think would be the realistic soundeffect for the shock combo which is lacking in 99. UT3 also still had some punchy and powerful weapon soundeffects, some stronger than any other older equivalent. Look I'm an oldschool gamer too but I don't like to wear rose tinted shades because I know I'm never going to replicate those memories and feelings I once had so I focus on making new memories and enjoying the moment instead of trying to set up a charade.
@@aze559 I don't feel Unreal Tournament needed to have vehicles to begin with it wasn't designed to be a game like another franchise was made for using vehicles with Halo and Farcry 1 which are games for that yes . It was the time where every games needed vehicles Battlefield , Serious Sam 2 , etc...( not gonna name them all ) kinda similar story with remaking games in stupid HD only to gain easy lazy money without doing any efforts . I would rather have a complete NEW than a loosy remake . ( Serious Sam 1&2 HD as Flatout 2 HD was NOT needed ) . You talk only about the official maps from UT99 that weren't big maps at all but look how many modders made excellent big DM and CTF maps . Is why the 7 rocket launcher was great , you also could change the ratio of the launcher to instead the 7 rockets instead to wait them load one by one . The maps in UT2k4 feels big but are pretty small in fact they are looking with shinny objects and such but are limited also i find the remake of Deck-16 & Curse are meh bleh . Why are gun sounds reducted in sound quality in modern games ? Like i said the PlayStation 1 or N64 Doom double shotgun offer à much better quality and feels like you have REAL GUNS between your hands as tve guns in Doom 2016 and Eternal are very poor and please no nostalgia excuse which is too easy to use as card . I think that Unreal Tournament 2003,2004 needed to be made more wise since both games are similar without real big improvements kinda similar with Quake 3 Arena which is moreva dlc content game suited to be a Pack for Quake 2 . As for Quake 4 it was the game too much similat to Unreal 2 : The Awakening which not belong to an Unreal game besides some slight views, references , etc... Please no boomers cliché talk . @@defiraphi Where do I begin here. Unreal deserving vehicles or not is an entirely different debate, I was just trying to maybe prove some points for you for the 7 rocket launcher. But as I thought about it more it's simply not practical. That was just a hypothetical scenario however and has nothing to do with unreal deserving vehicles or not. Here's also a shocker but (fyi I prefer unreal) Unreal was kinda doing what other games were doing, most notably quake, from its very inception. However Unreal was at least doing similar ideas in their own way. That's how games have been from the getgo pretty much and I'll return to this argument in the end. Talking about unofficial maps doesn't change the fact that it's not practical to have up to 7 rockets in the base game. That's like saying you bought an item from a manufacturer but it has a problem with the way it's manufactured. So to fix the problem you also buy something from a third party, while that may fix your problem it doesn't change the fact that it had issues from the manufacturer. Bringing in mods as a defense to a game's problems has never been a good defense. The guy fixing an issue with colonial marines' xenomorph AI didn't suddenly change everyone's mind about colonial marines, it only shined light on the incompetency of the developers. To clarify so you don't take things out of context again, it's not a big issue, the rockets were just made a bit more practical to use and I don't see it as anything other than a positive. I could also take something extremely situational (example the bio link web the latest UT game used to have in one of its builds) and craft a very specific scenario for it and use it as an argument as to why it's useful, not only is it a select example but also doesn't change the fact that I designed an unofficial scenario intended for that situation. Some modern games have better sound design than others what can I say, I agree the latest doom games' super shotgun sounds weak but the regular one sounds incredibly satisfying to me and would sound like, as you would say, a REAL GUN. Here's a little known fact not just among video game developers but movie makers too. Sounds, especially gun sounds, are often exaggerated, edited, and intentionally made distinct from each other to get the specific sound they want or in a shooter game's case, make the gun sounds distinct (actual gun sounds are also reported to sound really bad and unusable most of the time, and they can sound super identical). I can understand a complaint like how a lot of modern games try to go with a hyper advanced graphics artstyle which doesn't make it stand out and only waste resources since those types of graphics are expensive but to say most modern games have bad sound design is something I'm not just simply gonna disagree with but actively protest against. You can think that, but you can't think that it's going to change many people's minds at all. No big improvements between 2003 and 2004? The game more than doubled the total map count, added more gamemodes including fan favourite assault, more characters, more weapons and more. That's without a doubt a huge improvement. Now saying that the game feels like an expansion pack rather than a sequel is a different kettle of fish (AKA an entirely different topic because I sense some language barrier issues, again how is more than doubling the content NOT A HUGE IMPROVEMENT?!?!). Regardless if you consider it a sequel or a standalone expansion pack, a game's core shouldn't be changed which is what some people mean when they say "The game feels the same and should be changed". You could create a spinoff if you want something which completely changes the core of the original game. Which brings me to the final paragraph. It's not a secret that coming up with more and more original ideas as time goes on gets more and more difficult and practically nothing you name is something that can't be traced back to some game prior to it unless you bring up the actual very first game of their type. The rocket launcher and redeemer are the same weapon in concept, an explosive weapon which explodes upon contact and does AOE damage and it's a staple shooter weapon archetype. What separates them is that they have their own nuances, their own gimmicks and minor quirks but by definition they're both rocket launchers. Literally nobody minds that rocket launchers are staple fps weapons, especially if they have something to separate them from the rest. Literally nobody thinks that the redeemer being a buffed up rocket launcher makes it the same. Yet you say cyberpunk is not a clone mind you, from your own words a remake of gta because it's a sandbox which lets you drive cars, you can shoot and the game has a police system? Game quality aside, you can't copyright an idea and it's absurd to expect that you can't make an identical game with new twists and spins. You realize how crazy that sounds right? Oh Warcraft is a remake of Dune 2 because it's a game where you harvest resources, build units and structures to destroy the enemy. Oh Subnautica is a remake of The Forest because it's a survival resource gathering game with a plot you're supposed to uncover as you explore the world and progress the story (PS I know you'll take it out of context but those are just the first examples that came up, doesn't mean they're the very first games of their types). Oh no most of OG Doom's soundeffects came from a stock sound library, the absolute horror am I right? Nothing original about the sound design. You make some good points but just because you named a few examples I may agree with like with call of duty doesn't mean it's applicable to the entirety of gaming. Yes there are some lazy clones and rehashes, and it can go all the way back to the earliest years of gaming, that doesn't mean all games are those lazy clones and rehashes just because it's following the same formula as the prequel game or a different IP. In conclusion, you still make a lot of weak points, you're strawmaning and moving the goal post. I honestly forgot that we were talking about just UT99 vs UT2004 at some point. I don't care that you're born when you were, I doubt you still play the games you used to play way back then and even if you do still play them your judgement can be clouded. Your points boil down to "It sounds like a real weapon" and "games just aren't original anymore" and make blanket statements like "newer weapons sound like toys" and "This game's a remake of that game, nothing is original about this other game". There's some obvious language barrier issues going on but even so with what I mentioned earlier it's hard not to draw the nostalgia and boomer cards. Regardless if you think it's a cliche, you're basically the definition of those two and have some insane demands of originality too when you stop to think about it indepth you're getting the originality. If it's not the rose tinted glasses then you're being a troll and are just wasting my time. I don't mean to insult you btw, that's just how it comes across.
