      I thought stuck lifters was caused by bad oil like taking too long between oil changes? I have a gmc 2007 5.3L and my lifter on cylinder 7 got stuck. I have them all out now and will replace all of them. What do you recommend to make sure my afm lifters dont do this again? Im gonna buy a new updated vlom as well. Thank you.

      @@paquesepas6696 I have the same truck. it was cylinder # 4 on mine that had a stuck lifter. replaced AFM lifters but it was too late, valve was burned. had to re do the job and replace the valve. then a year later the same thing happened and the cam was destroyed. I had to replace cam and lifters with non AFM type and reprogam the PCM to defeat the feature. it's all better now with 141,000 total miles.

    One tip from another SO scope user. Please don’t stack your grounds in the scope like you did. Put the single banana jack on the yellow lead in the scope and stack the other grounds together away from the scope. This will parent your scope from damage if you hit it or drop it.

    This is where an in cylinder pressure test would help. The waveform could likely reveal where the issue is without removing the cylinder head.

    • @scientist100
      @scientist100 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Easier would be to just use differential pulse sensors at intake and exhaust and watch the waveform; will tell you exactly which one is misbehaving; clearly a valve not seating right; worn rings are usually very consistent.

    • @edwinlomonacofoolsend
      @edwinlomonacofoolsend ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @scientist100 Agreed. Totally forgot about that one as I was watching. So for sure. Pulse sensors in intake and exhaust would probably be easier. The trick is always in waveform interpretation. But a dead hole should be real obvious. In a case where a cylinder is not being identified through a DTC. How would you know which one it is? I'm assuming the trigger being used would be an ignition trigger. But from my understanding that trigger will not align with either the intake pull nor either exhaust pulse. Would you be looking at the intake pull right before the trigger?

    • @scientist100
      @scientist100 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@edwinlomonacofoolsend yes; it is important to use the TDC overlay and specify your trigger and firing order but here we already know that it is 8 and whichever looks abnormal would automatically tell us which one is failing. Cylinder identification whether intake or exhaust for a certain cylinder is necessary. Tapping into the exhaust side; you will confirm if it's an exhaust valve but the intake waveform will show both usually as it will back feed pressure if it stays open during compression.

    • @DylanL69
      @DylanL69 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A leak down test would probably be a much easier way to tell

    • @scientist100
      @scientist100 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@DylanL69 I don't know how much you know about oscilloscopes but you can clearly see that the valve sometimes seats correctly as it can get good compression at times and you know what that means... You will get lucky if you get it when it is not fully seating to do a leak down test. Unfortunately; a leak down test may not prove anything. Pulse sensors just needs an intake access; usually a PCV hose and that's all.

  • @gman3747
    @gman3747 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    great video on diagnosing this issue i totally agree with it . I would be 100% positive that it is a valve seating issue, with a small bore camera you would be able to see inside the cylinder without having to take it apart. just a tip . Good job.

    Just had the same issue on a 6.0 Chevy truck. It had very bad intake vacuum leaks on cylinder 4 and 6 causing misfire and lean codes. But repairing it only lead to no more lean codes, but the misfire codes returned.
    Intermittent compression loss on cylinder 4 which reduced at higher engine speeds. Sometimes the valves stick in the guides, lifters and cams also fail, but this engine was very clean. Customer also declined further inspection. Hate not knowing the exact cause, but that's our world. :)

    some diag guys dont know this, some cars will shut off the fuel injector in a multiple missfire situation, bmw is one of them, i have seen guys call a bad injector because the ecu is not triggering the injector to stop cat damage and bore wash/engine damage, id say it is a typical valve not sealing issue.
    good call eric.

  • @mikechiodetti4482
    @mikechiodetti4482 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I was thinking like you with the valve sealing problem. One more thing would be a weak valve spring or a sticking valve. GM had problems with valve guide problems in the past. I have seen a valve seat problem. It took many miles for the problem to occur, but at idle the engine would lope turning on the MIL light and yes, gauge compression and cylinder leak down was good compared to other cylinders. This was before scope testing. The engine was a 1997 Dodge 360 (5.9L) V8. Contacting Chrysler for information, they claimed it was a "metallurgy problem."
    The fix. Replace the cylinder heads. The reman heads had the latest and greatest in valve seats. Engine ran great after that.

    The 5.3L is known for AFM lifter issues but #8 is not an AFM lifter. However, they can stick and jam up internally which will cause a lifter tick. If they are not hearing a lifter tick, I doubt that's the issue. I'd be looking at a bent or sticking valve or a broken valve spring on #8.
    They might be able to detect a sticking valve by running or even just cranking the engine with the valve cover removed.

They want to pull the head and check valve and or guide. maybe check push rod BEFORE pulling head? , what else could it be?

If there is access , how about putting a small articulating bore scope in # 8 cylinder and possibly examine the valves and seats ? It may be faster than doing a leak down test on that cylinder . #xtoolgiveaway .

    PLEASE READ! I had the same issue on a 2011 5.3l it was on Cylinder 6. I recommended removal of the Valve Cover for inspection and stated it may be possible lifter. Customer took the truck, Apparently, our shop quote was too high if it needed all that. Customer took it to the shop next door. Their Diagnostic tech found a bent valve for that cylinder. So this is where it gets interesting.... They kept the truck for a whole month. And i was eager to know what was the issue. So turns out, they did the whole head job on both banks, replaced valves and still was misfiring for same cylinder after they had it all together. They did their checks and took it all apart again. It was a bad exhaust lifter for that cylinder and had rounded out the cam lobe. Made sense since sometimes it would seal and sometimes it would lose compression. Their Jr. Tech is friends with one of ours and he confirmed it. Dang.

    Dangit, I was hoping for a smoking gun!!! I have a '99 Silverado, 5.3, 144k miles. So no AFM or VVT. I don't have a scope available although I can use one. So here is my story. Cylinder #3 miss at idle. Previous owner replaced plug wire and intake gaskets. I tested compression and it was 125psi on #3 and 145psi on #1 and #5. I thought possible cylinder wash so I ran it for a bit with the injector unplugged and #3 came up to 145psi. I replaced the coil with a good used coil, it has strong spark, swapped spark plugs between cyl. #1 and #3, swapped injectors between #1 and #3 but before that I checked for injector pulse which it had. I smoke tested the intake and found no leaks anywhere. There is a very faint bit of valvetrain noise but it doesn't sound like a problem. No lifters rattle on start up. I even went as far at to exchange the injector wires between cylinders #1 and #3. I know this makes the injector timing horrible but I thought possibly if the miss followed the wiring it could be an injector wire that was weak enough to fail under load but not weak enough to fail with a noid light. But the miss stayed at cylinder #3. I haven't pulled the valve cover yet. I'm hoping for possibly a bent push rod or failed rocker arm although as I stated, not real valvetrain noise. If that checks out what would you recommend? I've worked on these engines since they were new at the dealership and thought I had seen everything. But this one has me scratching my head.

    How would a camshaft cause intermittent low compression?

    @Eric, what’s your thoughts on the XTool D8, for $549.00?

    I have the exact same symptoms on my 2004 Silverado 6.0 liter
    The only difference is if the truck is warmed up, after 5 minutes or so driving, all random misfiring disappears.
    Could this possibly be expansion of a valve seed or some other component that results in better sealing which eliminates misfire?
    Or perhaps going from closed loop to open loop? Expecting a pinpoint diagnosis. But what would cause the symptoms to disappear after running the truck for about 5 minutes? I live in Florida so there's no extreme cold temperatures

      Also, truck only has only 98000 miles

    What are symptoms of one cylinder with not enough compression? Would cel be on

      Cel will be on because it's misfiring

    Why not check compression with mechanical gauge in spark plug position to confirm you have low compression?

    • @2nickles647
      @2nickles647 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Because he is using current as a means of capturing compression. A higher peak = more current= more compression

    If you marked cylinder 1 and counted like you show wouldn't it be cylinder 2? Or have I missed something
