    That was my main fear: Jim hit the nail on the head talking about the tapes of the history of wrestling WWE owns the rights to. WWE alone is a shaky controller of all that footage but to up and sell to another corporate entity with no attachment to wrestling whatsoever is terrifying

      But that's a bit disingenuous as Marvel wasn't as huge back when Disney bought it as it is now. There was no marvel cinematic universe which is where it's current huuuuuuuuge value stems from.

With the exception of the last year (probably not even a full year) wwe viewers have been steadily been dropping, their tv deals renew in 2024 - would you have confidence people will be as interested in pro wrestling in the next 15-20 years? I personally don’t at all, I think when vince is gone, hhh decides to settle down, heyman is finished with wrestling, the guys today are 15-20 years older and with changes in technology I find it very unlikely there will be as many people tuning in to watch raw and smackdown - especially if wwe becomes owned by another company or organization who thinks what they want on tv is more important than the bookers

    Actually, $9 billion is in line with the premium that shareholders would expect for WWE (or any company) to be taken private. The current market capitalization of WWE is about $6.5 billion so a sale price of $9 billion represents about a 38% premium over the current value. Slightly to the high end, but in the range of what the market has been historically for public to private sales, especially for strong companies that dominate their sector. For example; Microsoft paid a 49.5% premium for LinkedIn, which turned out to be a great investment for MS. The WWE brand will likely continue to generate revenue into the future and the shareholders (including McMahon) will not just 'give' it away at current market valuation. A final sale price of between $8 and $9 billion is the most likely outcome especially with so many companies competing for content such as Apple, Amazon, Netflix, Comcast, etc.

  • @Matt-cr4vv
    @Matt-cr4vv ปีที่แล้ว

    The rumored price sought for the sale is being overblown. For one you always start high in negotiation and come to a final number. It’s not like $9B is some firm price that’s a take it or leave it. Secondly it’s common to see an acquisition go for a premium of a the stock price presale. So at the current price and market cap of $6.44B seeing it go for a number above that wouldn’t be out of the norm for M&A activity from a historical basis. It’s also a part of how you justify a sale for shareholders. For instance there’s no reason to justify a sale for shareholders if it went for a price at or below what the shares traded at prior to a sale, especially if it was below. For a price below the stock price it’s a worse deal for shareholders than declining a sale.
    But people also keep telling themselves that the sale is something that is occurring because of what happened with Vince when the reality is this plan has been in motion since the last rights deal. When WWE got their last renewal the revenue of the deal went way up from what it had ever been before. In 2013 the full year revenue from media was around $380M. That went up to $680M in 2018 and it’s almost $400M more than that now. Once the company got such a giant increase in rights fees and was now so dependent on those fees for their financial picture the sale suddenly became a reality. The rights fees is now so important that a sale needed to happen as a public company. The amount they now get isn’t sustainable to keep getting long term so a sale became reality well before now.
    A sale is the reason they brought Nick khan in to begin with. People with knowledge of his agreement coming into WWE have pointed out that a huge aspect of it is what he stands to earn from a sale happening. The company knew that in the future if they didn’t get another huge deal like they got this round it would slam their stock price even if it was a good deal because so much of revenue comes from media now. All other business lines for the most part have remained at stagnant levels while their leap of revenue has been almost entirely media rights. The worst case scenario if a sale didn’t happen is that maybe Nick could work some magic again to get another giant renewal for the company. It’s the reason why they’re going to find a buyer prior to any new media deal because they recognize the rising rights market is going to end at some point and they don’t want to be left holding the bag whenever it does. With so much of the family wealth being the stock price a sale or media increase means billions of dollars to the family.
    Now the original plan for a sale was probably always going to try and keep Vince in control in a role similar to Dana White but it was always planned to happen if you look at the steps that have been taken over the past 3 or so years. It’s been consistent positioning to be ready to solicit s buyer at this point in time ahead of the next renewal to eliminate the risk of what a renewal that was less would result in. It just seems like that wasn’t the case with how Vince forced himself back into the fold. But if you analyze all the events leading to now it’s clear a sale was the plan all along to be able to cash in the value of the stock before an eventual decline in rights fees slams the price of the stock thanks to the dependency the company developed on the rights fees for their growth and revenues.

    There is no reason to worry about the historical footage. I don't think that Jim understands WWE's purpose in buying it. There is a very small market for historical wrestling footage. WWE never purchased this footage to show it in full. Having control of this vast amount of historical footage makes it much easier and cheaper for WWE to produce video packages, and aids in production of the various wrestling documentaries that they are involved in. It isn't just sitting on a shelf. They use it, but just not in the context that Jim would like them to. Any company or entity that purchases WWE will need this footage for the same reasons. This footage will be around long after we are gone.

    Disney only paid 4 billion for all of MARVEL Comics, and have since made 100's of billions off that investment just on making movies based off those characters. So I can't see anyone paying 9 billion for what is basically a tape library and a logo. Especially since the bottom is quickly falling out of streaming, and all the big companies (Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max) are massively cutting back on spending and looking to sell off content themselves.
