    Very interesting review, thank you for taking the time to record it for the people!
    I've been using them for almost 4 years now, they are still like day 1 (used them every day!).
    Now, I wanted to say that it's VERY subjective. I went to buy the DT770 Pro and luckily there's a huge store near me so I was able to sit down, same track was playing and they just switched headphones on my head so that I could hear the difference. While 770 felt fun, when Custom Studio was on I was surprised that I preferred those. Sound is just more analytical and I was able to hear more details with them (even though they aren't as warm feeling as the 770). So I'd say, for sure try before you buy.
    On the other note, they aren't "boosted", but are designed for studio work first and foremost and on that regard they are perfect. Bass slider is actually here so that you can hear how something will sound on different sound systems. With the linear setting you'll do all the main work and if it sounds good like that, then, trust me, your work will sound good on any speakers. Now, as I said, 770 are a bit more fun for every day use, but I also use the Custom Studio for casual stuff with bass opened all the way and it's great in that regard as well.
    Again, make sure to try both as it'll come down to personal preference.

    I got these and love them. I wrote a rather long Amazon review. LOVE the treble on these. Very non-fatiguing to my ears, but I'm a treblehead for sure. Surprised that you say they're like a DT770 as I haven't gotten the "Bass Monster" impression so many people seem to give about DT770s. These are some of my favorite headphones. I added an aftermarket cable, some silver DT770 earpads, and a ZMF Aviator headband. Nothing too fancy just dressed them up a bit. These are some of the crispest, driest headphones I've heard. My absolute go-to for acoustic music.

    I'm glad the cable does pull out. Better wrecking the cable than the port. My DT770's died from my attempt to fix the cable at that end (I would have had to ship to Germany for repairs which cost as much as the headphones). Good to see the issue is fixed.

    • @apieceofcrap8794
      @apieceofcrap8794 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      i remember seeing a comment from him on different video that the new dt770-80 ohm has just as much treble as the other versions.
      I bought a pair of dt770's 80- ohm near the end of 2016 and going off from what i remember, these custom studios seem to have a bit more treble then the dt770 i bought years ago.
      Now i'm not sure if my mind is playing a trick on me, but i find that closing the ports reduces the treble, making the headphone sound warmer and more tolerable for me.
      The treble on these don't attack you right away but you'll find your ears getting sore a little after an hour of listening to these

    I’m buying for my father. He’s been in concert live music environments for a long time, and has an affinity for Beyer headsets in that setting. Buying him a set of audiophilish cans, and due to removal cable and styling I’m thinking of getting him these. He’s got to fly frequently so that’s why I’m going to the closed back Beyers over the 880 or 990, he’d like to not be “that guy” listening to open cans on a plane. If he’s already got some upper frequency hearing loss or tinnitus, would these be a safe bet? I’m getting him a nice DAP to power the 80 ohm nicely.

    • @VeitLehmann
      @VeitLehmann หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think you made the right choice. I just compared the DT 770 Pro/80 against the DT 700 Pro X and DT 770 Pro X LE. Both didn't do it for me. Then I remembered these discontinued Custom Studio and looked them up: The Headphonecheck review shows a bump at 120Hz which usually leads to mud in my ears. Another commenter here mentioned the same. So I'll stop questioning it now and be happy with the 770/80, there's a reason why these are a legend. And probably a reason why the CS isn't.
      So why didn't I like the Pro X?
      DT 700 Pro X: Too much clamp, much less soundstage. Little sparkle in the treble but it can still get sibilant and grainy. Bass, while pretty well balanced, is missing a bit of impact.
      DT 770 Pro X LE: Too V-shaped with pretty recessed mids. Sharp treble but still without the DT 770 Pro's sparkle, and a bit too much bass. Soundstage is wider than on the 700 Pro X, about as wide as on the 770 Pro, but not as natural.
      DT 770 Pro: Bass amount and impact is between both Pro X, just right for me. Very nice balance of bass, mids and treble, very clear and detailed treble without being overly sibilant, not grainy at all. Mids can sound ever so slightly boxy at times - that's the only thing the 700 Pro X does better for me.
      Another reason you still might prefer a Pro X is that they're easier to drive, so they can get louder.

      Crackling means blown driver, or possibly a hair trapped in the driver which isn't uncommon on DT series headphones. As far as which cable mod, the most common one I've seen is the mini XLR. For my DT880s I just braided the cable to a shorter length. For DT770s I just got custom Studios instead and bought a cable from NewFantasia/NeoMusicia on Amazon.

    hello i don't know if you remember me, i asked you some months ago about the differences between dt770 and custom studio. i am glad that you did this review. i also saw the 1770 review (i hoped they were way better in sound but now i doubt). my brother has dt770 and i have the custom studio. from my perspective (i don't know how to explain in technical terms) the 770's are like 5 % better in bass - i find the perfect bass in the studios is somewhere between the 3-rd and 4-th podsition (yes you can do that)..fully closed it sound just too boomy for me (i am pairing them with a c5 jds labs amp from where i can adjust more the bass if i want). on the other way i find the mids and soundstage is also about 5 % better on the customs. i also like more the design, removable cable (it fits a simple straight jack to jack cable from every shop). another thing that could be tested is the improvement in sound and comfort by changing the velour pads with the brainwavz hybrid pads. i noticed an overall improvement in sound, bass is a little bit better and the treble is not so present, overall for my taste is a good investment. i also wanted to ask what will be your three best sounding over ear headphones in the 4-500 euros price range (i trust your ears and your reviews - at least for the headphones i had untill now). thank you

    • @metal571
      @metal571  7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Actually now that I bought a brand new DT770 80 ohm I can't stand it because it's much brighter than the custom studio. So actually I like the custom studio more even though it's still too bright for me. If you like the bass at that low of a setting you might actually really enjoy a DT880.
      Honestly I don't really feel like there's much between the mid-fi range of 200-400 USD and the summit fi 1000+. The only way to truly upgrade from stuff like the DT770 and HD 650 is to go all the way to kilobuck land.

    • @grantmiller6002
      @grantmiller6002 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I completely agree with you on this point. I noticed a couple years ago that once you reach that 200-400 USD range, there's really only side-grades as you work your way up to the "summit-fi" category of headphones. And even then, you're really only getting to hear noticeable improvements between these $1000+ headphones if you listen critically to well mastered and recorded music.

    Having both these and dt 770, these are better in terms of clarity and accurate bass. I find that these eq better in terms of harmonic distortion. The mids and highs are pretty similar, I'd say these have cleaner highs but it's not less than the dt 770. I find it to be pretty neutral treble. In that regard poor recordings are rough. You can veil them in eq really easily. The isolation on these are better and the inserts can be fun (I made wood inserts for them).
    These are my favorite tracking headphones for vocals, when closed all the way the isolation is awesome and it really pronounces the mids and highs (around my range).

      Late to the party, I know, but in case you see this can you tell me if the Custom Studios are a good fit for electronic music? Or you'd say their treble clarity would render them fatiguing for long listening sessions?

    I bought a pair of 770’s (80 Ohm ) for studio recording and practice. I need the detail for development of my 5 string bass tone with effects. The 10 foot cable is essential when I’m standing playing and recording. It is my understanding that these headphones are designed and used primarily for professional musicians to use in studios. They do all I need.

    From what I can remember, DT770 is more V-shaped with better sub bass but recessed lower midrange, so it sounds thin, but bass hits very hard and deep. Custom studio on the other hand is more midrange focused, lower midrange is warmer and upper bass fuller, but sub bass is less extended. With ports set to more than linear bass, it sounds just muddy. So generally, if you want more realistic and natural sound, buy Custom Studio, if you want more bass focused, I would say exciting sound, buy DT770.

    I have DT 770 Pros and they are not bass monsters to my ear. They have fantastic range though and do represent the subs too - just the bass isn't hyped. But my pair are a good few years old. I can't remember if they had stronger bass response back when I got then. I also feel they have less isolation than I thought they had. The headband isnt very tight thought - another attribute I can't recall from when I got them so I can't compare. I've a feeling they had a tighter grip on my head. I'm guessing a loose fit would mean less bass also since they are not as close to my ears.
    Is there any way for me to tight my 770 Pros up so that (a) they are tighter on my head and improve isolation and (b) increase the bass a bit?
    Thanks for a very thorough review btw. Tempted to get these just for the removable cable!

    I was seriously considering the DT 770 80 ohm per your advice but decided to scrap it because of the non-modular cable. How often do cables give out? I know with some of my older headphones, after about 1-2 years of use, they started to break down like all other 3.5mm cables.
    These sound like a promising replacement for the DT770's but not sure if the overly accentuated treble might make my ears bleed.. I listen to 90% edm and prefer V shaped ..
    Do you know of any alternatives to this? (Tight bass [good details between sub and upper bass] with good mids and crisp high's that aren't ear bleeding sharp)
    Also, newly subbed :)

    I'm definitely getting these for music production, I use apple earpods so these would be a massive uograde. PLUS I'm a massive bass head lmfao. I would get the DT770s(they're cheaper) but the DT770s don't have a removable wire, I have bad luck with headphone wires so the removable wire and the sound sliders is probably why I'd get them. Good review!

      I dont know if u made the purchase, but if U are a massive bass head, avoid these headphones.. The bass in DT770 (80 ohms) which I own and love is not overpowered, but just amazing controlled punchy one... u can feel its signature is flat and bassy at the same time but just fun... Also I'd recommend the DT990 pro 250 ohms, I love them and they are over fun with great bass... Its ur choice but take into cinsideration that u need an amp for both sets, I have the m-audio transit pro which can drive my cans (990 and 770) to the max level and the 80 ohms 770 is not drivable with the laptop or smart phone, it will reach 60% of the volume level in my opinion

    You say beyerdyanics dont break, but on the 770 and 990's I own, all the plastic attaching the ear pieces to the headband have cracked and on my 990's the cable has pulled out of the headset. Wont stop me buying another Beyerdyanic, but makes me question buying another without a detachable cable.

      They have a lip and pull right off. Washing won't bring back the foam thickness, which is what affects the sound the most btw. So eventually they will still need to be replaced when pads get flat

    I know it's an old post but I'm taking a chance. Narrowed my searches to the DT 770 and Custom studio. The Studio are 2x the price of the DT 770 pro here in Canada right now. I like the fact you can adjust the bass but, is it worth paying that much more ? I don't like that all-flat cans, I prefer when they have a little EQ curve there so that's why I'm looking into the Beyer.

      They just have pulled it from the custom one pro, which isn't marketed as a studio headphone. Not sure why, but one benefit to having the slider that I don't think I mentioned is that when it's set to minimum bass mode, it increases isolation because it's completely closing a bass port

      I have to say that I still like the DT 770 more just because it's more realistic sounding (not 1990-like, but surely far away from the imaginary-sounding CS).

Between these two headphones, wich do you recommend me? Wich have better sound? Is practically the same? Thanks!!!

      +A.David have not heard the custom one pro yet. It's supposedly quite different from the other two and more relaxed sounding rather than bassy and trebly. It's the most consumer oriented can so I'd probably go with the custom one pro.

    The plastic ( locking key ) on the cable is quite weak and breaks easily - best to buy a V-Moda Speakeasy cable just in case.
    Any difference in sound with more modestly priced Custom One Pro Plus ( with pleather ear pads )?
    Bought portable Custom Streets and I think it even has more bass than Custom Ones ( last time I got to get a quick listen to them ).

      +metring073 never heard any other Custom series headphones. Not sure why because the Custom One Pro has been out forever and seems a somewhat popular alternative to the M50 that I just never managed to get my hands on.

    they nailed m50x with detail and clarity especially on step 3 of bass port. sound very linear with little variations at treble

    i even can mix on these.

    Have the same driver of the dt770 🤔??

    • @dnalekaw4699
      @dnalekaw4699 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No not quite - the dt 770 driver is more controlled with addditional rear damping in constrast to the custom studio

    • @metal571
      @metal571  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is? Are there pictures of this

    • @dnalekaw4699
      @dnalekaw4699 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@metal571 I don't have any at hand but the custom studios I had didn't have the 'bass reflex' cage (as beyer calls it) around the driver, nor did it have the felt cap over the magnet as opposed to the 770. If you go to beyerdynamic spares the driver parts are different too, thinking probably the smaller cup volume of the studio and the differences to the actual driver, whatever they may be, mitigates the need for the extra damping but idk. Definitely different!

    • @metal571
      @metal571  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dnalekaw4699 true, definitely not the same cup shape. never knew that, was honestly curious since i never took one of those apart but have been inside the dt880 and dt770 before. thanks

      @@metal571 sure thing =) cup volume does make a shit ton of difference, I know for a fact if you transport all of the Ori mods to a smaller housing you get zero bass lol

    How is this One Studio from comfort...let say comparing to V-Moda M100 (extremely bad), Sony MDR100ABN (good), Bose QC35 (excellent) and Sennheiser HD598/599 (very good)? cushion? clamping force?

    • @metal571
      @metal571  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Yu Guan the clamp is on the high side but the pads are very comfortable.

    metal571 what is your recomendation for open headphones for mixing ?

    • @Assimilator702
      @Assimilator702 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      xeximaxi Why would you want to mix with open headphones?

    • @metal571
      @metal571  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why wouldn't you when they're a far superior design from a physics standpoint? At least for checking mids and highs

    • @Assimilator702

      metal571 I've never seen a studio that used open headphones. Out of the question for live sound. I've seen them in mastering sessions. All very high quality sounding final products. All Metal bands. Maybe I just never came across open headphone type of dudes.

    • @metal571
      @metal571  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh yeah obviously can't use an open back for live sound since there's no isolation. Open backs are for quiet and precise mixing and mastering studio work

    Could you please tell me how to eq dt 770 80ohms to have less recessed mid and a tad less bass

    • @metal571
      @metal571  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Hooman Z try EqualizerAPO and the Peace GUI plugin. Then you can set up your own parametric EQ to reduce bass and reduce treble which will naturally bring out the mids.

    K550 or K553 vs DT770 ?

    • @metal571
      @metal571  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you're asking me what I'd rather listen to, that depends on what I'm listening to. The K550 and 553 are identical, it's just a rebrand. The DT770 80 ohm is probably my favorite closed headphone though.

  • @ilsamsamchil
    @ilsamsamchil 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    IMO custom studio is what dt880 would've sounded like if they were closedbacks, with detachable cables.
    btw regarding dt770 vs custom studio highs : i.imgur.com/lNnq3R1.jpg
    I can't vouch for the accuracy of the graph but highs on these are definitely milder than anything else on dt series, but definitely boosted compared to neutral-er options.

    The Beyerdynamic Custom Studio is not a DT 770 Pro,not even close in sound quality vice,but it is fun and have a nice cool sound to it.Its like a cheaper and ligther versjon than the DT 770.
