  • Ice fishing for Stocked Trout can be a patience game. But when you catch that right fish you will see the reward.
Brook Trout with bright colored fins & halos marking their sides are truly something to be seen. If you haven’t had the opportunity to Ice fish for Brook Trout I would recommend adding it to the list.

All the way to northern Ontario to catch a bland, stocked 15" brook trout? I thought northern Canada had the biggest and most colorful, native brook trout in the world? We are catching brilliantly colored, 7-pound, stream-reared and native brookies here in the States.

This is Northern Saskatchewan up in the boreal forest.
They are stocked trout, made in a fish hatchery. Then released as various sizes like fingerlings into small secluded bodies of water with no way to get into natural lakes or rivers. This lake is 150 ha.
Saskatchewan has a very good stocked Trout program that stocks Rainbow Trout, Tiger Trout, Splake, Brown Trout & Brooke Trout.
All of which are stocked into small secluded lakes or pot holes I call them. Just big /deep enough to hold enough oxygen over the winter so they don’t winter kill.
All the other videos on the channel with trout are also stocked & caught from pot hole lakes. Some as big as 164 ha & others 16 ha. That’s about the size of them all, very small lakes but some have solid fish in comparison.

@@surgeoutdoorsangling Oh, sorry! Wrong province. Any trout is better than a pickerel or warm-water panfish. I grew up in the boreal forest. So, I'm guessing it's not that much different there. The mouth of brooks are probably a good place to catch native brook trout. I once caught 6 in a few minutes out of one hole. Native and even stream-reared are more colorful and better tasting. But if you have none, stocking is the way to go!

It's too bad that lake winter kills so often. I think P.A wildlife was talking about aerating it at one point.

Interesting, that would be a good idea. It’s a nice little lake. I was quite surprised with it. Had quite a bit of action there, however some I never got on camera.
