  • Back Trolling For Walleye
When you remove yourself from all the fancy electronics & trolling motors it takes you back to the basics.
What time of year is it? What techniques can I accomplish using the boat I have? Where do I look for walleye?
Well I rented a boat in Northern Saskatchewan. It was on a lake that’s accessible to basically everyone so this was not at a fly in lodge. So during a half day rental I figured out what I could implement to try & catch walleye.
It was August so I know walleye will be on the move. I knew I could use speed & bottom bouncing blades of some variety to cover water. So I choose to target weed lines hoping some fish would still be in back bays migrating to the deeper main lake.
It didn’t take long & I got to bend a rod on a few Northern Saskatchewan Walleye.

I wonder what the water temperature was. I always think of anytime after about September is being too late for bottom bouncing spinners but obviously that's wrong

      Video was filmed in July.
But definitely don’t limit techniques to time frames. Regardless of what some one tells you or you see online. Let the fish & the location dictate your technique.
I’ve seen rip jigging glide baits first week of June absolutely put on clinics. I had that lesson in a tournament once.
Also bottom bouncing spinners like Colorado blades with a minnow in late fall like Sept & Oct can be lethal.
      Cheers

How fast were you trolling..did u have to flip between neutral and reverse?

I was straight driving in reverse non stop.
I had my phone on a gps speed app and was going approx 1.4 mph. With metal blades like a #4 Colorado blade you can catch walleye at 1.5-1.6 mph even in a tiller back trolling, if it’s a narrower boat depending on motor size.
If your looking for something to slow down your speed in this situation what you can do is purchase a 16 or 24 inch drift sock and tie it to the front eye of the boat to slow you down. I’d start with a smaller drift sock and then see / compare to what you need for your boat.
