About Squall and Rinoa love story, Lady Pelvic released a video about FF8 that kind of made that issue more clear.
Jared chose mostly the "Squall responses" when prompd, and it makes him act more as an Asshole towards Rinoa. If you actually choose the nicer answers, their dialogues and romance overall is a lot better, specially because the change in Squall behavior in disc 3 is a lot smoother that way. It still have very cringeworth dialogues, but it's just not as forced as it was in Jared's gameplay.
While watching Jared, I asked myself if people mostly making the asshole choices because they are the first one is what made them think they are the "Squall responses" in the first place, because my Squall was not that much of an asshole. (Still kind of was, though)

I really hope that one day FFVIII gets a ground-up remake like VII. If anything, just to overhaul and refine the mechanics in this game that make it so frustrating. When people talk about remaking old FF games, a lot of the time their answers are based off of nostalgia or what their favorite was when they were younger. But for me, VIII is the game that would benefit the most from getting remade.

FF8 is my all time favourite, the first in the series I played and fell in love with. To hear you rip it apart, chew it up, spit it out and tread all over it in this scathing review is quite frankly 100% accurate. As a young and troubled teenager I found Squall endearing and relatable, the NPC’s mostly friendly, the sleepy villages quaint and Esther city a promised land. Now however, I wanna slap Squall with a wet fish and demand he get some life experience, need the game to speed up the pace and have someone cast silence on Quistis whenever she attempts to recite a flurtatious tutorial. This review was spot on even though I still love this game. Great stuff!

I was the perfect age to embrace this game in 1999 (16) as I love RPG's and the characters were essentially my similarly aged digital peers. Retrospectively it was a disappointing title with a poor combat system and bizarre story. Meanwhile, I now consider Suikoden 2 the absolute best from the PS1 era.

My biggest complaint with the remaster is the non-analog movement. The original PS1 game had it but it's been broken in every subsequent release, and I was hoping they would fix that in the remaster. It feels so clunky to move around.
100% agree with you about the bummer feeling of feeling inclined to hoard magic. I'm someone who often hoards items in games already, so I found myself just attacking or using the occasional GF in 8, never using magic for that exact fear of penalizing myself.
Your suggestion of 'learning' the spell and just having MP would have gone a long way. The junction system's ability to break the game is interesting, but I would personally prefer it to be more traditional and fun, with the ability to break it going away as the compromise.
I like FF8 but I agree with pretty much everything you said. Great review and video as always!

I would love to see Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest remade. I've always been a big fan of JRPGs which allow you to feel like your choice of weapons really matter (FFII, Bravely Default) so it would be fun to have that aspect redone. While the game is notorious for having been made with a western audience in mind, under the belief that said audience was not good at JRPGs, I still think the combat system of having a set number of encounters in your pathway of the open world could be expanded upon in a beneficial and fun way. Plus, the pattern of the enemy's artwork changing to show damage was just fun to see how the artists could have fun.

Although after watching this video maybe I have to adjust my mindset in playing this and try to avoid most battles so that I don’t level up too fast. I’m not sure how to approach this game when and if I play it. Years ago someone gave me the strategy guide for this game even though I have never played it. Will following that strictly help me in beating it? Still unsure if I want to jump into this one.

9:20 I only manageed to beat the final boss because I had two of these invincible drinks left. What also helps in regards of the entire game is to not level up until disc 3 or so when you have these GFs that give you one permanent attack or defense stat point when leveling up while having them equipped. That way the spell junctions aren't that important anymore except for maybe HP. Would have been nice though, if Quistis had explained that to you at the beginning.

That was a great point that you made about the dialog choices for Squall. Game designers should really consider more whether giving a player the ability to choose a dialog option will benefit or hinder the story. And to your point about the music, I tend to refer to FF8's soundtrack as the mellow FF music because a lot of it really is rather low key. Overall I agree with most of your review but I do really enjoy the card game which I think I may have said that part on Twitter already but ohwell. Anyway, I want Final Fantasy 2 to get a proper remake. FF2 is one of the worst mainline games but I find it to be very fascinating considering both that it laid so much ground work for the series and because its story could be great if expanded. I actually talked a bit about this in one of my Final Fantasy videos and I was planning to talk about it even more in a video I'm currently working on.

About Squall and his relationship with Rinoa you have to understand that Squall has some separation anxiety issues and trust issues with people, he closes up around others because he's afraid that he'll wake up tomorrow and lose them. On the airship with Rinoa, he explains that he started to close up after his "sis" Ellone left him as she went to hiding due to her powers and Adel being after her from Squall's child POV Ellone just straight left and ghosted him one day and it traumatized him and broke his trust. Then Rinoa "waltzes" in and tries to teach him to just enjoy the moment and being open around people is okay when she falls into coma Squall learns that she was right he was a fool being closed up and anti-social in life means that you miss out on the good things in life and you end up taking them for granted.
When Squall and Rinoa dance at the graduation party you can see Squall start to chill out a bit and dance seriously with Rinoa and stop trying to escape from her and go back to his "hiding place" and drink wine alone spot and then when Rinoa walks away from him he has a very heartbroken expression on his face and then he's extra grumpy and "bitchy" towards Quistis who's trying to flirt with him.
I respect your views on the game though, but FF8 is baaaasically "young adult with trauma learns to open up with the power of kindness and love " the video game. This game does have some big flaws and you can tell that they rushed it because I think that this game was coming out the same time as the Sega Dreamcast? So you can tell that they rushed it so it could rival that as FFVII was basically a Playstation seller.

The junction system was the only thing I liked about this game, surprisingly, because I found it original and fun to mess with. That said, the characters beside Squall and Rinoa had ZERO development and even their importance to the plot was minimal. The story itself was also really meh and that "plot twist" about the orphanage is like so unnecessary, like what changed after that? so they all knew each other as kids, and? Their relationship stayed the same. I'm glad you didn't like it as well haha

Very level-headed approach and I’m glad you played into the subjectivity of how some of the systems and music just don’t work for you whereas obviously it might work for others. I also love that you don’t give the romance the benefit of the doubt since the game itself doesn’t elicit such events to occur anyway, really remarkable points brought up here and I love that you played into why you don’t like the game, not why others might not enjoy it!

I even love the stuff I hate about it. That's nostalgia for ya. Playing the Steam version with the Roses and Wine patch sure helps it stand a little taller.

Did you chose the rock music or slow music for the festival? If you chose the slow music for the festival, squal and rinoa have a very touching Romantic scene where she finally forces him to open up a bit and they connect and it’s probably the most important scene that sets them up as lovers. If you chose rock music or a miss-mash of instruments then this convo never happens and their relationship makes lil sense (worse-the game later references that Romantic convo whether they had it or not)

      @user-tn4ik2pi3r 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Pelvic Gaming oops I misspoke, it’s the Irish gig that makes them share a moment. It’s the scene that pretty much their whole relationship is based on. This is a copy and paste from a script someone else typed out but it’s what you missed::
Rinoa: "What a night. Great music... Good-looking guy... Not only is he
good-looking. He's the sweetest guy...a great listener. Right now, he's
seriously thinking about what I said. He's shy and doesn't say anything,
but I know. So, what do you think? None of our business?"
Squall: "I appreciate your concern... But..."
Rinoa: "No 'buts'! Just think about this. This might be the only time we'll all
be together. So, as long as we're together, we might as well enjoy each
      other's company and...just talk, right?"
Squall: "...Just for now, huh? Forget it. I don't want friends who won't be
      around tomorrow."
Rinoa: "Gosh, you're such a pessimist. There are no guarantees in the future.
That's why TODAY, the time we have now, is important. Squall, we wanna
help you, as much as we can, for as long as we can. We all love you.
there, I said it. Please don't freak out. We just wanna live, y'know,
live through this time with you, together."
      Squall: "......Together...?"
Rinoa: "Keep it in the back of your mind. Call on us whenever you need to.
We'll be waiting. Like I said, who knows what's gonna happen in the
      future...but I have a feeling we'll be together for a while. So, what's
on your mind? Do you have any dreams, Squall? Anything you want to do
      with your life?"
Squall: (......I've never thought about it.) "That's something I'd rather not
      talk about. What about you?"
Rinoa: "...I don't know. I guess I'd rather not talk about the future, either.
But right now... ...I wanna stay right here...like this."
[Fade to black. That night, Squall tosses and turns, dreaming of his youth.]
Boy: "...Sis... I'm...all alone. But I'm doing my best... I'll be ok without
you, Sis. I'll be able to take care of myself."

I genuinely love Final Fantasy VIII, warts and all, and I totally agree with what you said about it. It's a massively flawed game, but it's one I'm fond of. Aside from things that you mentioned, FFVIII has a world that I'm fascinated by. The side quests all lend to this world being packed with weird occult happenings, many of which can be explored in side quests. That alone has made my appreciation for the game grow over the past twenty years since I first tried it out.
    But yeah, it's a mess. It's just a mess that I love.

I remember feeling very interested in exploiting the junction system back in the day-first time ever I felt that way actually. I love your brutal honesty, huge respect. FF8 was my second jrpg and i didnt struggle at all the way you did and i was 13 lol and had been playing games for 2 years. Didnt play games before that really.
I mean its a ps1 game from 1999, i played it on release and there was no other game like it. But if you dont enjoy reading dialog, the amazing world building and characters, the story, the card game and figuring out how to maximize your power (forget about drawing except GF's), then its probably not a game for you.
But wow its one of the best jrpg's in history and the junction system is one of the best systems ever. Only thing i dislike is how easy you can cheese the system with cards and mods. Super fun but super ez cheesing lol
You never have to draw really, but you learn abilities with GF's and learn refining items and magic. Since you played twice and didnt enjoy yourself, im pretty sure you only played remaster, speed boosted your way through and never got enough AP for GF's. They are the source, then just press auto and the game junctions for you. Super simple really but it is outdated.

I just finished the remastered a few days ago and I agree with a number of points you said. I loved this game but man story was a mess it’s like kazushige nojima had bunch of interesting ideas but didnt know how mesh it together. Still this game had a rushed development so the blame can’t go entirely to nojima. Hopefully ff8 will get a remake in future after ff7 I love to see them have second go at creating this game fixing the flaws found in gameplay, story and main characters aside from rinoa and squall.

FF 8 have a interesting lore, but the game itself don't explain it to you, so it kinda fails in that too. I would love a full remake of Final Fantasy 2 with a more polished battle system. I played on the PSP, and after knowing what I was doing it was fun.

  • @rafaelrigaud3571
    @rafaelrigaud3571 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

FF8 is my favorite FF ever (perhaps because it was my first one), but I totally get your points. I also don't think it aged very well to be honest. I feel like Final Fantasies in general have a problem that they start slowly and take some time to get good, but FF8 takes this to an extreme. I love this game, but I always felt it only got fun after you get enough GFs to abuse the refining system properly so you can get (almost) all magic you need from items, which unfortunaly only happens in disc 2.

  • @victorobregon1176
    @victorobregon1176 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

I've played FF8 to completion about 3 times, and I hadn't been able to put my finger on why the romance sometimes worked and sometimes didn't until you explained it. Making it the player's choice was a bad call for this kind of game.
I also agree that having a hoarder mentality can be stressful when managing the Junction system. Last time I played FF8 y limited myself by only equiping certain GFs to certain characters for the whole game, and only drawing Magic when I felt I wanted to, to cast inmediately or to stock a little, and the game wasn't even that hard that way. I feel like FF8 allows for a lot of customization, but it's too overwhelming for kids and adults tend to go for the optimization mentality.
I agree with a lot of your points, specially about the plot twist, but FF8 will always be one of my nostalgic favourites :)
    Good Video!

I can’t help but respect them for trying something radical with the battle system in this game. It would be so easy, coming off of one of the largest and most successful JRPGs ever, to just do the exact same thing. But instead they did the Draw/Junction mechanics which, though far from perfect, were perfectly tolerable IMO and make the game very unique.
In that sense it’s like Zelda 2 or Mario 2, looking at a huge success and deciding to take huge risks anyway, and I really respect it even if it’s a game I’m not rushing to replay

  • @geminidrake

XD My little brothers would hate this review so much. They LOVE this game so much. I, myself, couldn't play it, but I enjoyed watching others do it. I dunno, I do agree there is room for improvement, but it was just something I found myself enjoying regardless. "Man With the Machine Gun" was a good track, but I tend to find myself gravitating toward "Premonition" (Sorceress battle theme) sometimes, too. Out of all the characters I wish they could've expanded on, Ultimecia most definitely. We knew nothing about her other than she wanted to screw time up, simply because she could. The creators outright denied she's a future Rinoa that lost her knight (Squall), and that's why she's doing this. Either way, I enjoyed your review. It was honest, to the point, and no sugar coating.
Out of all the Final Fantasy games they could remake to make it better...? Hmm.... that's a tough one. I could say 12, get rid of that god awful License system, and make it feel less like an MMO. That's just me.

Yet when the remaster came out, I got every trophy and 100% completed it, again. I think my nostalgia played a huge part in my love of this experiment of a AAA game. You points are all not only valid but correct. I will only disagree about the music as I adore it (but again, nostalgia) this was a fantastic review and I am a sub for life!
