I'm of the thought that they are specifically Phase I Dark Troopers. What we see in the 'pods' most closely resemble those imo.
@M 40 OH, you mean... EXACTLY the plan of the bad guy from Jedi Knight -2 game?))) (they didn't have beskar tho, but they had kartozis shielded armour -the other one of two materials that are lightsaber proof-ish - and the force was put in them trough artifact, not through sciense, but the result - Shadow Troopers looked like EXACTLY the same!) They did the initial experiments on a volcano mounted base btw)

For just I moment I was thinking "Wow, those Scout Troopers are a lot more badass than the regular Storm Troopers!", and then they crashed into each other and exploded 🤦♂️
I don't know why everyone is surprised when the x-wing guy asks Cara if she lost anyone. Since they kinda have ships and transports that can travel through space, her family might have worked aboard a such a ship or been fighting with the rebels or maybe they took a holiday on another planet when Alderaan blew up.
I know. I guess, if he had said, "Was anyone you knew, on the planet when it was destroyed?" would have kept commenters quiet. I'm actually hoping that, maybe, a thousand Alderaan natives were off-world at the time of The Death Star's attack. To meet some of them, and hear their stories, on this show, or in The Filoni-verse, would be informatively powerful. I hope some of them are serving in The New Republic Senate, and The New Republic Fleet. Maybe Cara Dune will come in contact with some of them, and some of them become part of an Outer Rim New Republic Security Squad?
@@anthonyyoutubefan7567 in the old EU books there were actually enough Alderaan survivors throughout the galaxy that they relocated to a new planet and named it New Alderaan. Since they've been taking snippets of the old EU and putting it in the show, who knows, it might come up

I LOVE that you immediately went to Dark Troopers. Dave Filoni has long been a fan of the "Dark Forces" games, and I'm super-hoping this is bringing a version of them back into canon.
The audio description track for the episode literally calls them dark troopers.

You can also tell that Jon Favreau is a fan of the games. So far this season, he wrote the first episode and this one, both of which heavily borrow from the games.
Baby Yoda asked very sweetly for a cookie. I think the whole reason he TOOK them is because of how mean the kid was. It wasn't that he said "no." It was HOW he said it.

I have a theory: Moff Gideon is not the mastermind behind these imperials and I have 3 reasons for this.
One, the ship Gideon was on was an imperial light cruiser.
Two, I believe those black suits Gideon was looking at were Dark Troopers or an advanced version of the imperial sentry droids seen in Rebels.
Three, the cloning project at the base on Nevarro.
The first reason is a bit simple but if Gideon was the leader of this imperial remnant, I'd think his command ship would be a Star Destroyer, not a light cruiser, I know that Star Destroyers would be much more rare during this time after Endor, but the imperial captain in the last episode mentioned that they were going to meet up with a fleet, which leads me to assume they must have at least one Star Destroyer in this fleet but it is currently being used by the imperials true commander.
The second reason makes me think that Gideon is just the overseer of this project with the child and these black troopers because when he appeared in the season one finale with his tie fighter it was the same used as the pilots in this most recent episode, Gideon was probably checking progress at the base and when he learned the child had returned he took one of the pilots fighters to deal with the situation himself.
The third reason not only makes me think Gideon isn't the one in charge, but also gives me a good idea who is, but first I want to mention that if the dark suits Gideon was inspecting were improved sentry droids, then there is only one person in canon known to have used them, and this same person in legends used cloning technology to boost the imperials numbers after the battle of Endor.
In short, I believe that these imperials are being led by Grand Admiral Thrawn and Moff Gideon answers to him.

I hope your theory is wrong. I want Miff Gideon to be the main villain, Thrawn had his time to shine.
@@yupyup1562 I'm ok with it when it fits the plot and situation, like with Admiral Sloan or Ahsoka. Its just when they kick more capable characters to the curb and force Mary sue leaders on us for the sake of politics is when I don't like it. Prime example, Admiral Holdo or the lady they tried introducing in the comics who supposedly truly built the Empire and had Palpatine under her thumb. Thats when they realized that they crossed the line with fans, trying to undermine Palpatine to push political agendas.
@@vincev7647 I'd be ok with Thrawn coming back in live action, especially since Rebels ended so mysteriously. They have to somehow finish the story of Ahsoka's and Sabine's search for Ezra and likely finding Thrawn somewhere along the way...perhaps over the remaining Imperial forces.

Given how it was under a tarp, I’m guessing that it’s an old Marauder, in process of being dismantled and that’s why it doesn’t have blast proof “windows”
In the new cannon books there are secret bases all around the galaxy placed by Palpatine. Those bases are meant to study force sensitive children, and clone the Emperor... among other things. They don't go into a ton a detail about them, but I assume this base is one of the Palpatine built bases. It excites me that they are continuing to being more of the books into the show. They brought Vance Cobb over already this season.
The way Adam just cracks up when the intro bit starts, I think Jay sometimes, right in the middle of saying something else, just yells out "Hey Peaches!" And starts the show.
Whatever the Empire is cooking, it'll be exactly what Ashoka Tano needs to showcase her badass Jedi fighting skills.

Not everyone who is from Alderaan was on Alderaan when it was destroyed. So I dont see the problem with the pilot asking the question if she had lost anyone. I mean she wasn't there so maybe others she knew weren't there.
Exactly like if she has a cousin that survived and was asked the same question she would assume the same that everyone was lost. My family is from Pittsburgh it doesn't mean we all still live there

My guess could be Jek-14 (a character I have only seen in Lego Star Wars and Freemaker Adventures), a force sensitive Sith Clone who was created during the Clone Wars
It is really hard to hear "M-count" and not conclude that they're talking about Medichlorians. I still think that Gideon was trying to create modified clones of Grogu in an attempt to have a Yoda-like soldier that he could control. I'm with Adam on this one.

In my opinion you don’t hand wave Midi-chlorians it’s apart of canon and we have to accept that. Just like we need to accept the sequel trilogy is canon too. If Filoni can do anything it’s take something Star Wars fans hated and make us like or even just accept it by bringing it forth in a new different way. All this being said I think this is either Snokes origin and the remnants of the empire become the first order or it’s Palpatines clone from rise of skywalkers origin since he was a clone as well. It makes sense that you would need a force sensitives blood for the Midi-chlorians to transfuse to a clone because you can’t just simply clone a force sensitive person and they be force sensitive

I’m rewatching this after s3 and was thinking that too. Also I find it amusing to go back to my old comments and see what I got right and horribly wrong and what I unintentionally foresaw. Like Din and Bo hangin out more in s3 and being a duo that many people ship.
I think he asked because some of Dunes friends or family could have been off world when alderaan was destroyed
They basically said in the episode that midichlorians are the key or at least an indication, although a bit on the down low: Pershing said in the holo message said that he doubts "we'll find a donor with a higher M-count". M = midichlorians. So even with an unmistakable confirmation pending it is safe to say that midichlorians still are a thing in The Mandalorian.

Modified super soldiers, the tanks are a distraction to thinking it’s relevant to palpatine, but why would such an important character have such garbage security? It’s for super soldiers for the dark trooper suits.
I hope they do their own thing, I really disliked the whole Palpatine backstory in episode 9.
It's definitely a Snoke/Palpatine experiment. Clone Wars greatly improved the viewing experience of the prequel trilogy. I think they're going for the same thing here with the Sequel trilogy because there was barely an explanation of who Snoke was or how Palpatine was resurrected.

Worth noting that Dark Troopers, in the original EU continuity, were in fact droids. Also, in The Force Unleashed, there were Shadow Guards, elite members of the Royal Guard who had some limited Force abilities...maybe that’s what Gideon was trying to make, with Dark Troopers being his backup/supplemental plan?

This was another great episode. Cara Dune is fantastic. Director Carl Weathers is a boss! The chase and dogfight scene was thrilling. And seeing it again with you two is a laugh riot. Thanks for enhancing the experience with your quips, theories, and je ne sais quoi!

The second 1970s Kenner toy reference of the season. Episode 1 was Missile Firing Boba Fett, and this one was the Marauder, which first appeared as a toy in 1979. I love the nods to the original toy line.

I know this comment 2 years too late, lol, but maybe midichlorians can heal tissue. In that case they can revitalize someone who was either nearly dead or possibly even properly dead :) People are talking about Palpatine, or Snoke, and it's possible they are trying to create an amalgam of different powerful Sith lords.

In the Hearing and Visual Disability setting the speaker calls them Dark Troopers. If they’re Phase 3 Dark Troopers they can be piloted maybe by force sensitive soldiers?
If next episode gonna be Ashoka fighting with force sensitive dark troopers, it's gonna be one hella episode for sure.
i believe although i could be wrong but aren't the Stromtroopers wearing a vacuum black suit under their white armour designed to help them survive space. Probably strong enough to keep their blood and guts inside when they go splat.
their is an old school d20 Star Wars, Saga edition included the clone wars iirc. and you could get era books for the Old Republic, rise of the empire etc

What i think was in those tanks is the thing that no one wants to admit.. i think that they are trying to create a new sith or force sensitive leader.. and i think that they are going to go into the direction that gives us an origin of Supreme leader Snoke. In the hologram they say something about the volunteers rejecting the blood but i think that one of the "volunteers or subjects" is going to bond with the blood of yoda and that specimen will turn in Supreme Leader Snoke. and since they are dipping their hands into unnatural ways of life that itself is going to fuel the power of the dark side that keep Lord Sidious alive.. thats my theory! haha

I believe those are the EU Dark Troopers. I agree with you, Adam and Jay...Moff Gideon is trying to replicate Force-sensitivity in beings, to combat the return of The Jedi, and the re-emergence of The Force in the galaxy. BTW, Guys: I WANT Kyle Katarn to return to canon! (I so missed his presence in Rogue One.) Favreau and Filoni, call Jason Court up, and ask him to reprise his role from 1997's video game, Dark Forces II. Just do a little CGI on him, and he'd be a great (re)addition to The SWU. Next week's episode is going to be INSANE. The Force is going to return with a vengeance...

@@williamdegrey I think the black ones are Phase 3 Dark Troopers. It would be cool if there were a few Phase 1 and Phase 2 relics in the storeroom, too. To see all 3 of them show up in different battles, during this time period, would be GREAT.

I believe the things in the tanks are what was eventually Snoke from the New trilogy and Snoke was a failed clone of Palpatine, he was just good enough to run the First Order until they perfected getting the OG Emperor back.

If you look very closely at the clone in the pod, the clone has a scar in the exact spot where Snoke has a scar on his head 😳.

One fan theory around who or what the "being" is inside the test tubes in the lab may be failed attempts at clones of Palpatine which in turn could be where we got Snoke from the ST.

Clones of Anakin Skywalker. He was the object of Chancellor Palpatine's fancy. He was told that he foresaw Anakin becoming the greatest of all Jedi, even Master Yoda. And if he was capping Anakin by telling him that, the Emperor then told Yoda himself "Darth Vader will become more powerful than either of us."
