    An excellent solution for small rooms. I have done the same in my 1930 renovation of our small room bed over the bulkhead

    Apart from creating a cupboard and a bulkhead, this eliminates several cubic metres above the stairs where rising hot air would otherwise wastefully accumulate.
    Conversely, there is now nowhere to hang an over-stair chandelier.
    I have retro fitted this arrangement in my house, with down lighters in the soffit.
    It’s always motivating and it feels respectful, when the builder/developer invites, accepts and facilitates your input.
    The common thread which runs through all your videos is that you always have an element of partnership with the project drivers. I find this very refreshing to watch, thanks.

    • @thetallcarpenter
      @thetallcarpenter  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Chris🖐I guess not having anywhere to hang your center piece chandelier is an unfortunate trade of fir having more bedroom/storage space😆Great comment, and I have always been able to chat with my builders/clients about ideas I may have to improve something, be it to create a more usable space or just adopt a technique to get the job done more efficiently👍Thanks for watching 😎 Cheers Del

    That is one thing years of experience give a customer. You are like me you obviously visualise the space and build things in your head. When I get given design builds as I call them with no drawings. Which is often. I build it and do the take off in my head. Or when walking through with a customer that wants ideas I give them several visions to see if they might like an idea. Having seen a lot of variants over the years let's you do this. You say you haven't done a set of stairs for about 2 years. I have only done one set of decent internal stairs in the last 24 years. Not many of them where I live. And even the ones that do come up there are specialist stair builders that make and install. You can't compete with someone that is all geared up for one thing. Looking forward to your install video.

      Great comment again Dave👊and I think having many years of experience behind you, not only helps you become proficient at carpentry but also give you a lot of experience of spaces and how they work in particular instances, and how best to apply this knowledge to different projects for customers👍Stair fit video coming soon 😀 Cheers Del

    I've made countless loft conversion stairs mainly on 1930 London houses, nightmare for headroom heights over the existing stairs. Its nice to start afresh, be able to set it out yourself and be certain of the headroom.

    • @thetallcarpenter
      @thetallcarpenter  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi bud🖐I've done a couple like that to, and, you're right, headroom is always an issue😬 I, pretty much, only do new work so am pretty fortunate to have a little say in how things get planned out👊Thanks for your comment 😎 Cheers Del

    • @TheBadgolferman
      @TheBadgolferman 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@thetallcarpenter They do give a little more leeway these days providing the existing isn't being replaced. Once I get the finish floor level heights, I bring a mock up newel post with 3 short cut risers screed onto it set it in position and measure down. I get the DS to ok it so I can make it with peace of mind it's going to pass. Very often the headroom is much less than the 2m specified.

    Makes you think. For the last year I've been spoiling myself doing face brickwork on central London jobs. Now that you mention stair cases, it's been a while since I did structural blockwork for lift shafts and accommodating the pockets in the surrounding blockwork for the pre-cast stairs to sit on.

    I think you've mentioned that you've worked in the States. And views/ opinions on their practice of building the stairs in situ as part of the first fix?

    • @thetallcarpenter
      @thetallcarpenter  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Dai🖐My experience of stair building during my time working there was that they were very basically constructed sets of steps between floors, and I wouldn't describe this 1st fix built type of stairs as a 'staircase'. Of course, this is not the case on some houses in the US that have wonderfull staircases built and fitted the same way as we do them over here🤩Cheers Del
