    that is a great way of making a new bulkhead, and the idea of putting the wood in between the steel beam, and then building off of that "genius", keep up the good work.

      Mainly the corner. You say to tie in metal furring to underside but should it be offset with OSB so that you have a nice corner for the drywall corner bead to attach to the corner?

    Unbraced soffits is ideal when used with metal. But that method is also good. However, metal is easier and faster.

    I like the OSB trick. The leaving 2x4 tails floating I'm not hip on.. I have repaired too many homes where lumber doesn't move in unison during expansion and contraction due to failing to connect members together properly, causing drywall cracks and even door reveal issues.

    • @HomeRenoVisionDIY
      @HomeRenoVisionDIY  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Not a whole lot of expansion and contraction in a basement cieling in the middle of the room however. I have never had a call back from my building and drywall techniques.

    Hi Jeff - love your channel by the way. Need suggestion please. We are in the process of renovating our kitchen and currently in the process of demolition. Everything is fine except one side that has ductwork in the bulkhead. Our kitchen cabinet is 36 inches. Any suggestions on what we can do with the ductwork which currently is about 8inches from the ceiling. When we put our 36inches cabinet, we really only have 6inches allowance. Would really appreciate your input, please. Thank you.

      At the end of the video you said you would run a metal track across to create the bottom of your bulkhead. What exactly did you use?

    • @HomeRenoVisionDIY
      @HomeRenoVisionDIY  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      standard metal furring channel from the building store. It is U shaped and is about 1 inch thick. comes in 12 ft lengths. You could always ask the pro desk for help. Good luck.

    • @Bradford6565
      @Bradford6565 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I assume this metal furring channel is much stronger than a 2x4 on its flat side. What would be the approximate length you can go unsupported before you have to worry about it flexing with the drywall weight pulling down on it? I have a few wide bulkheads to build and I want to make sure the drywall won't sag.

  • @gasmanrm

    Why did you attach 2x4 to the joists and not screw drywall directly to joists ? You lost 1.5 inches in height.

    • @HomeRenoVisionDIY
      @HomeRenoVisionDIY  7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I am not in the practice of following the joists just to drop down to the beam and back up again. The height is not a problem and I prefer clean lines.

    This video is great! At the end you mention a metal track and in the comments I see reference to furring channel. This is what I found at Home Depot, is this the right product? (www.homedepot.ca/product/bailey-metal-products-drywall-furring-channel-2-75-inch-x-12-ft-galvanized-steel/1000165832) The bulk head I need to build a little over 4'5" wide and 20' long. I can put a support pretty close to center, is this going to be enough support, assuming I put the furring channels on 16" center?

    Me again. Why 2x4s???Should be using 2x2 to save material. If building with wood... Should be building it out of steel. Lighter to put up. Straighter. will not twist with changes in humidity. waste of ply wood too.

    • @HomeRenoVisionDIY
      @HomeRenoVisionDIY  7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      We are trying to build something in a basement. metal framing amplifies the noise while solid wood helps to absorb sound. wood is safer to work with as well.
