- Betty Boothroyd, the first female speaker of the House of Commons, has died aged 93.

Lady Boothroyd, a former Labour MP, was speaker from 1992 until her retirement in 2000, and was the first person to be elected to the role after the Commons debates started being permanently televised in 1989.

A formidable woman. What a credit to Yorkshire and our country. She will be massively missed. If only more folk called it as they see it, the world would be a better place. RIP Betty. You really were a diamond.

@@titteryenot4524 I realise that I had no say in the matter. Nevertheless, wherever one is born, I think it is vital that you are proud of your roots. Betty Boothroyd was a proud Yorkshire-woman and was straight talking and no nonsense: qualities for which Yorkshire folk are renown. I take pride in where I come from and the qualities and culture I absorbed from growing up there. I hope you feel proud of your culture, too.

Betty Boothroyd was genuinely special, and there are only a few politicians who could justify that accolade. RIP Betty.

An interesting proposal. Should such a person be elected as an MP, and develope the necessary experience and rapport with the house, then why not? But bear in mind, the most important attribute for any speaker is a strong Northern accent.
