As a special effects makeup artist in-training (I’m still taking classes and whatnot), I can tell you how they created the mask of the main actor’s face for the head of the puppet, Kennie! It’s a practice that goes back centuries, called a “death mask.” I’ve had one done myself, and it’s pretty freaky. Would not recommend if you’re claustrophobic! I won’t go into the *whole* process here, but essentially you make a cast of the face, the person has to sit with the “cast-ing” substance on their face for around 20 minutes, waiting for it to set. After the setting period, the cast is removed from the face and plaster of Paris is poured into that cast to create the actual “death mask,” which can then be used & reused to create any other fake versions of the face, as a canvas to fit/create facial prosthetics that will go on the actor’s actual face, or to create a horrifying spider puppet for a questionable art film! Lol Hope that helps! ☺️
I watched this movie before watching this episode and I thought it was terrifying. The slow burn made the terrifying moments stand out even more and the long wait between them was very tense because I was genuinely worried about the puppet the whole time.
I've been watching ✨Mike✨ here and there for a few years now...and legit didn't find out that's his name until this series started 💀 I kind of assumed his name would start with a "G"
I do think we need to stop depending on Rotten tomato scores to determine how well a movie is received critically. Rotten Tomatoes only determines how many positive and negative reviews a movie gets. It doesn’t really suss out critical acclaim and whether critics “loved it”. There are many movies with over 80% on Rotten Tomatoes that I wouldn’t say that “critics loved”. As for this movie, I think it’s creepy, unique and solid enough. Nothing amazing but certainly leans more toward good than bad for me. However, yeah, it’s a flick designed to be divisive.
instead of rotten tomatoes, John... people will eventually come to More Butter to get more curated discussions and reviews. we are building something special here 👀
I feel like Possum would have been better if they had gone from just an allegory of implied childhood trauma to actually exploring it. There was potential to really show how the implied abuse the character faced at the hands of his Uncle (a domineering figure) affected him into adult in every aspect of his path. They let the allegory to a bit too long for me.
Yep, like, if you wanna make a trauma drama just go ahead and do that, don't dress it up as a horror movie. I HATE it when people keep trying to stuff "deeper" meanings into their movies through some sort of physical representation of something psychological. We get it edgelord, you wanna feel like you're smart and sophisticated and all that jazz yet still be dark and artsy and gloomy, make a 5min short movie or a music video and stop trying to stretch it out into an hour and a half when you had one thing to send across and nothing else entirely.
@@Toxihex I dunno, the puppet was pretty fuckin cool and creepy, I wouldn’t want this movie without the disgusting roadkill puppet. But if I recall, yeah, you kinda get exactly what it’s going for WAY too early. And they only sorta “reveal” this at the end to confirm it, but don’t really explore it. You gotta keep the puppet tho
There are other movies that do that. The point of this movie was to trigger the fear of "uncanny". It was a film maker taking a challenge to make a movie on a subject and going above and beyond.
@@Toxihex All good horror movies have some subtext, without it they are just generic slashers. I can understand not liking the degree of subtext in this movie but to say that none should have more to them would just be Friday the 13th sequels. Don't get me wrong those are good for what they are but why limit a genre to lack of substance.
I am using this vid to shout out Garth Marenghi's darkplace. It’s a comedy parody show by the director of this film, Matthew Holness, and it’s one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen. The general idea is that fictional horror writer Garth Marenghi's wrote a show in the 80s and now him, his producer, and one of the other actors are doing a retrospective on it. Unlike this film, there are jokes every second, it’s utilizes the idea of so-bad-it’s-good, it’s a great parody of hospital dramas, supernatural horror, and 80s soap operas, and is honestly a really fun character study of an egotistical, out of touch writer. It also stars Matt Berry and Richard Ayoade who you may know if your into British tv. It’s free on TH-cam, as well as all the extras which are equally hilarious. Please watch it, it’s so underrated!
There's a lot of things I can overlook in a movie, but boring is not one of them. Been on the fence whether to watch this or not, thanks for the heads up
I did the same thing! I watched possum I felt it was more of a psychological story, didn’t feel it belonged in horror. I immediately went to Ryan Hollingers video as well, and felt like I got it but it just didn’t affect me other than the fact that I felt pity for the main character.
Same. I actually watched it and it felt like a drama with some scary bits, but the scary bits were just making trauma, so like ....cool. I feel like the babadook did well and still people are trying to rip it off. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it turns out like this movie where it's not bad, it's just really boring.
The name of the movie gives me creature feature vibes. Like, there are movies about killer turkeys, so before I watched this, I figured it was one about a possum.
Kennie's struggle to explain, appreciate, and improve this film (not to mention Mr. GG's struggle having to process these stoner-esque descriptions) IS the best metaphor for this film. Life unintentionally(?) imitating art... beautiful.
if you hate movies with a lot of silence you would probably also hate A Ghost Story (2017), but I feel that movie has a more compelling narrative than Possum
I’m watching this literally right after watching Ryan Hollinger’s video on this film & while it’s fascinating to see the difference in y’all’s opinions, it’s also kinda wild that the 3 of us just watched the same video explaining Possum?? 😂😂 Not that Ryan isn’t a well known TH-camr, I just don’t see his work referenced by other creators in their videos a whole lot, so I’m surprised to see him referenced here!
"The whole movie bored the fuck out of me!" Glad it wasn't just me. I never managed to finish this movie., despite trying multiple times, because of how much it dragged.
Soooo....I'm loving the podcast so far. I wanted to drop a disturbing movie suggestion. The Depraved 2011 which I believe is also called Urban Explorer....no idea why. But I saw it once back in 2011 and have yet to revisit it, it was that unsettling for me. I thought maybe the camp counselors would like and or enjoy this film to cover.
I really like this one. I could see how it would feel long to a lotta people, but I think that’s part of its point/purpose. It is a study of trauma and how it haunts us, obviously. But a big part of that is the isolation that comes with it. The silence is representative of the silence we put around our traumas. The lack of extremity in the violence even serves to underline the sorta expectations of catharsis vs their realities, which are often a little underwhelming. Hoyever, Ryan Hollinger is always dope.
Possum was made as a film maker trying to make a horror movie of Freud's writings on fear of the uncanny. They were trying to create movies based on what Freud said was fearful. He could have just made a slasher with an uncanny puppet or mask but tried to effect people on a deeper level. Going into it thinking of it as a regular horror flick not an art film with the story behind it it can definitely be seen as bad and pretensious.
I watched this movie a couple years ago and I don't remember a damn thing about the storyline but I'll never re-watch because the puppet was disturbing enough to remember.
Ayyy shout out to Ryan Hollinger. I watched his Possum video because I was too creeped out to actually watch the movie. Good to know I wasn't missing much.
God I love possum so much. Definitely not horror more of a thriller. I wish more movies would go back to being categorized as thrillers instead being every movie that has any once of scare as horror
If you hated this, I wonder how you'd feel about Ghost Story. It's also a slow burn, and it either resonates with you or not. For my husband, it was torture. For me, my eyes were glued to the screen the whole runtime. Even during "the pie scene."
Listening to you guys review this makes me want to suggest you guys watch "Loon Lake" It's such a horrid movie. Even my ex who loves bad movies hated it. It's the only movie that we watched that was so bad that we actually wrote reviews for it. Warning: if you put a negative review in almost instantly someone posts a positive review and my ex and I suspect it's someone that worked on the film or a friend or family member. There is also so much red in this movie that my ex wondered if it was symbolism. We couldn't find any info regarding that so now we suspect they needed to paint things and the only color they had on hand was red. I'm sorry if you do watch it and feel like you lost an hour or more of your lives after this.
One thing it could be is that they made the metaphor or whatever too obvious. Kind of not making it a metaphor at all. They told a story of a molestee turned possible molester and he's just crazy. He thinks his doll is alive.
omg the "duce" is reaking Ryan Hollinger!!! hoyever i get the movie wasn't all that, but i love all of you! so glad you got to see his content omg Spooky Rice! collab with him

Art is really subjective. At least in my view. How we feel about a story depends on us as a person
