      Hi David how are you?. Just a curious question do you find where your buttons are on your joystick for your third function being a comfortable spot? That's the way they installed mine when I picked it up had to loosen the nuts turn it counterclockwise so the buttons were by my thumb just seemed like they were in my way otherwise when I was running the loader. find it more comfortable using my thumb quicker and smoother up and down with my thumb like I said just curious just a question

      Hi BB, sorry for the VERY slow reply but I just found this comment was held by TH-cam. Anyway, I really like the buttons on the front, but I suppose if it had been delivered to me with them on the thumb side I would have gotten used to that too!

    Yes. YES. More grapple action for my personal study. I appreciate this. I like the single top jaw for cleaning/clearing small debris. I may end up going that direction, but I do like the double top jaws as well for large, oddly-shaped objects. I guess I can always grab the fork grapple for boulders or stumps.
    As far as burn piles go, I go pretty big on mine, but I'm at least 200 feet from any trees, and I usually only burn when it's really wet. For your area, I'd keep a burn pile very small. However, it looks like things stay fairly wet this time of year for you.

    • @PaleHorseOutdoors
      @PaleHorseOutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Logan! I decided against the split top because I wasn't sure if the FEL on the compact could handle an unevenly weighted load very well. My logs are thin and straight, so ideal for my grapple type. Your tractor is much bigger and would probably handle a split-top pretty well. Yes it's wet even after a week of sun! Nice job David. I don't think the pile is too big. I would burn it on a calm day with some dampness on the ground so the leaves don't catch in the woods. I burnt a much larger one a couple weeks ago with a foot and a half of snow on the ground and was still nervous. Just trust yourself and if it doesn't feel good, then adjust what makes you question yourself. Take care and stay safe. Hey, no snow - I love it.....

    Great techniques and tips. David, if you are uncomfortable with the size if that burn pile, make it smaller, you are the best judge as size doesn't really show through the camera. Once it burns down to a little more than embers, use your grapple and throw a bit more on it. I have burnt many piles and am still nervous on every one. The thing we have going for use though though is we both have equipment, so if the fire starts getting bigger than we like, we can throw a little dirt on it to slow it down.

    • @PaleHorseOutdoors
      @PaleHorseOutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great points, Joey. I can't really get water down to that site easily, but I can always use dirt to keep the fire in check. Thanks for watching, my friend!

We need to get into this grapple action, we have a compact tractor with the third function. The size of your burn pile looks fine, we have started with much bigger piles. I've gotten by without a grapple for years but sometimes I want to move piles of brush and logs long distances around our farm--and moving with my mini-excavator isn't practical. So I priced a grapple and a 3rd function for my Kubota L3901 yesterday and got some sticker shock. Wow. So I put it on my wish list, but I think a dump trailer is a higher priority! Is the fence built?

    • @PaleHorseOutdoors
      @PaleHorseOutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes they are expensive and the cost of the 3rd function valve doesn't help. I got my grapple at the time of purchase (at 0% interest) so I haven't really felt it. But even so, I could not have done anywhere near the amount of work I've done so far without the grapple. As I get older and more broken from military service, I see that this is the attachment that's going to let me work longer. I need a trailer also, so that's on my wish list! Thanks for watching, friend!

      @@PaleHorseOutdoors . I have thought about ding something similar to what Mitch from MJA Doing Stuff did. also a copy somewhat of Logans from Fabbed Fun Masseysaurus. I have the John Deere 520 with the loader and dirt blade on the bucket. That tractor will out lift the Kubota badly. it isn't even close. I have seen my Dad lift a 16 ft long green red oak log up onto a flatbed truck bed. Many times. My Kubota wouldn't lift half of those logs. I wouldn't want to push it that hard any way.
      I use the 520 to lift logs up off of the ground and then cut from each end until I reach the loader. It would be safer with a grapple attachment to pinch the log to the loader and keep it from coming off and squashing me like a cockroach.

    • @PaleHorseOutdoors
      @PaleHorseOutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tractortalkwithgary1271 I'm still "grappling" with the best way for me to buck wood. As you say, the grapple would get it up waist high and pinch the logs down while bucking. My biggest issue is getting the logs off the ground in the first place without having to use the tractor so much for that. I'm also considering a large bucking table, but since I don't want that in the middle of the meadow down there, I'd have to build it up by the shop and move all the logs there. There are lots of options to consider, I just have to keep from making my joints and back worse!
