  • If you have a can light in an unwanted area. You can easily remove it. Even if you dont have attic access. Watch our video to learn how to remove this can light safely. People sometimes want to replace a can light with a ceiling fan. You can use a regular phillips head screwdriver but it is much easier if you have a stubby screwdriver. These are just very short screwdrivers. You will need to unscrew the 4 screws near the bottom of the can housing. Once you do this you will be able to push up the housing or pull it down. From here you can access the jbox that the electrical wires are in.

Always check for power even when you believe everything is off. Never cut two wires at one time unless you checked for power and there is no other option. When I was young and inexperienced I was replacing a lighting ballast in a commercial fixture. The light switch was off, but the light fixture was on an emergency power circuit separate from the other fixtures. After feeling 277 volts flow through my heart, I always check for power.

Really helpful. I feel like I can do this myself now. I guess given the option, I'd still rather have Mike come to my house, if only for a beer and a chat. Cheers!

Thank you. I was able to take those ugly things out, while leaving in the brackets, and fitting Halo wafer lights in its place.

You should aim the camera at the can light all the time with your instructional explanation in the background. You should not flip flop between you and the can light that will make the viewers difficult to follow your instruction.

I want to change from a can light to a semi flush mount and also move it over about 6 inches. Can I just open it up, move the wires to a new junction box with brace and patch the hole, leaving the can up there?

@@TheVirtualElectrician Thanks! Just installed all new 6 LEDs leaving all the "new construction" stuff hidden behind the sheet rock. I removed all cabling to the old stuff, secured the cabling to the new equipment JBoxes and everything works just fine - it was a bit of a pain to free up the cables due to narrow space (4 in holes) and older equipment having a lot of cables (ballasts).

I have three 4.5" can lights under a flat roof that do not have the screws or the black clips. There is just one shiny clip on one side. I can't figure out how to get these three cans out so I can access the wiring to install wafer thin LEDs. I want install the LEDs throughout that bonus room where I do my hobby. This is what is stopping me from proceeding on this project. Advice?

This might work for very simple/cheap cans. You'll never be able to do this with new construction LED lights. The recessed fixture is built like a tank. You WILL be removing some ceiling sheet rock. Welcome to the "Darkside" of LED lighting.

@@TheVirtualElectrician Actually, no. Many of the recessed fixtures in my home were north of $400. These are Juno LEDs. When they fail, very expensive to fix. I wish I had gone halogen.
