The line "she wanted us to be jealous and competitive" seals it, since by pitting the children against each other, they are more susceptible to her controls and influences when they turn to her for help. Plus, anyone get projection vibes when the MIL tried justifying being mad on her daughter's behalf with the "that's how a normal woman would feel" about the wedding and pregnancy happening at the same time? And yes, unhinged people have lost all filters, so it's kind of regrettable that only then will people like these speak the truth.
MIL feels threatened because she thinks the new baby has replaced her as the force that unites the family. That why she was mad that once the pregnacy news came out, no one was jealous or angry, but all were happy so there was no point for MIL to swoop in and save the day as the uniting force and take charge of the situation.
The Mil needs to be put in jail. There is something very wrong with her. The fact she wants her children to always be fighting or competing for attention is just sad. I was diagnosed with GAD many years back and anxiety/panic episodes don't make you do irrational or malicious things outta nowhere. In fact, all you want to do during those episodes is to retreat.
