What Cenk should also say in this fear about taking jobs away is that the people who hire legal/illegal immigrants who don't want to pay a high wage or offer benefits that they should really be mad at. Not the immigrants.

@@4820FIVEOH Wrong. No one is stopping illegal immigration because that is where the money is. Legal immigrants have to be paid a legal wage and taxes and benefits. If you really want to stop illegal immigration, then you need to go after the businesses, not the immigrants. You also need to be prepared to pay more for every single food you buy, every construction project either public or private, every dinner out, hotel room, landscaping service, etc. Are you willing to put your money where your mouth is? That's rhetorical, we know the answer. No, you are not willing.

The system is broken and clogged with overstayed visas and backlogs that the "legal" way of entry is considered untenable. Why wait in a long line that never seems to be moving when you can just sneak in when there's opportunity to get a piece of the pie, so to speak?

So we just need to fix the system and there is a bill that passed the senate waiting for the house to pass it and it would get more money for agents judges & the tech to find the fentanyl. and a new fast way to assess asylum claims and deport people legally in weeks not years. Republicans have been running on the border. It gets them votes. That is why they killed their own bill in 2014 and have not passed the one that is just waiting for the house to pass.
And then those same red-staters b*tch about the local economy and needing that labor that all of these redneckerchiefs don't want to get out there and sweat to do.
Let's just ignore how they change the culture and vote for people who tells them they are going to give them affirmative action or more free stuff. And trying to preserve a particular culture doesn't mean the country is going to be stuck in the dark ages, in fact America when it was more euro was much better than it is now, that just a few decades ago.

I hold several key democratic beliefs but there has to be fairness in immigration. I have family and friends in asia waiting in line. Bumping people ahead of them is ridiculous
I get what your saying but google the mass deportations in the 1930s and 1940s. “Mexicans,” born in this country who were here since before it was the US were deported by the millions. And their descendants get rejected when they apply to come back legally to their ancestral homeland. There should be no reason besides a criminal record for Mexicans to not be able to enter this country and yet we are the image of the Illegal Immigrant. You cant be illegal in your own land. And as much as i think asian immigrants are awesome. That is the reason why Mexicans should be the first in that line. We aren’t coming from the otherside of the world.
Are they in imminent danger? That's why people have been risking their lives to come here.

Immigrants do do dish washing and other restaurant work. They also do construction. That is a biggie.
When I was in high school in the 70s , high school students did the restaurant work to save money for college. Construction was done by skilled Americans which is why most of those homes are still standing today.

We have DNA evidence. There's no shame in saying people came from somewhere else thousands of years ago. If Native Americans didn't originate from anywhere else from different peoples, they would be the only humans that didn't originate from Africa, and that makes zero sense.
Americsns have no problem picking fruits and vegetables. But you need to pay the properly for thst type of work.
American farmers try to hire Americans first, but the ones that end up applying for those jobs don;t last very long at all. The vast majority of rural Americans prove that they are far too lazy and/or obese to be able to do that kind of work.

I will see people who make good money say, they are against the minimum wage being increased to $15, because then the company will have to lay people off. Which is a lie. If there is always record breaking profits each year, and they get tax breaks. It holds no truth. Technically with inflation the minimum wage should $35 and hour.

Why does no one understand the word illegal?
They do. But not everyone realizes that not every illegal act makes one a criminal. When a starving child steals a loaf of bread, you don't cut off their hand. You put the loaf back and find them a reliable source of charity. Most laws are guidelines rather than decrees. People are expected to break some laws regularly, with the provision that they do no harm. If a law has been broken and no harm has been done, the obligation of society is not to punish, but to remedy the root causes of the illegal action. If the hungry steal, get them food. If the homeless loiter, give them shelter. If the needy flock to your borders, process them and maybe consider aiding the country they came from... y'know, since your government were probably the people who screwed it up in the first place.

Going to a country and declaring urself as an asylum seeker is a legal way to seek àssylum. Ppl who do that are allowed to live in the US while thier case is being worked on. When conservatives say 'illegal immigrant" they mean ppl they don't want in the country. Are there ppl staying in the country without being in the system? Yes. But those aren't the illegal immigrants conservatives are talking about.
One goes through the legal process to get in the country, while the other overstays their welcome or just sneaks in the country without the Authorities knowledge

I have heard from some descendants of enslaved people that their ancestors did not immigrate, they were imported. There is a nuanced facet of immigration that it is done willingly.
I would say that argument is partially correct. They were “originally” brought here against their will. But no one alive today was a part of that. Do we call them non-citizens? Please, they are now as American as anyone else.
You don't need to come willingly to a country to be an "immigrant." The definition of an immigrant is a foreigner that has moved/been moved to another nation permanently.
A migrant is a person that has moved/been moved to another nation temporarily and then is brough back. Many migrant Indian workers have been kept in slave-like conditions in Dubai and other Middle Eastern nations, but once their "contract" is up they return/or are allowed to return back home.

Since I am not a member of the group in question, I can share that the debate exists, but I’m not the one to actually die on that hill. My ancestry absolutely consists of immigrants from various parts of Europe. And with most semantic debates, I’m less interested in what word is used, and more interested in everybody agreeing on which word means what.
Like the whole deal with white people getting all butthurt about being called racists. Because the white people definition they’re using is limited to an individual taking racist actions at other races. While the BLM definition includes systemic racism, and white people benefitting from racism in the system, even though those white people did nothing in particular.
And if white people actually believed theirs was the only correct definition, it would be one thing… but many of them know exactly what the BLM definition means, and they’re using this narrower definition as a straw man. I can debate with, and even have grudging respect people with different views. I do not respect people with bad faith arguments. The fact that these bad faith arguments find such fertile ground in America is why I now live in France. (For the record, I assume your response was in good faith, and that regardless of which label we put on things, we should be able to agree on which words to use, and from there sort out the actual disagreement. Like civilized people.)
In other news, I saw that North Korea was also supplying “volunteer” labor to Dubai. With most of the money going to the government. I want to say that in spite of this fact, the small remainder that goes to the workers’ families is still better than any other options. I want to say that. But I am not 100% confident in this statement, so treat this only as rumor.

When can we first address the deportation/border issues first
We need to prioritize Americans first. Americans should be able to find jobs, housing first before immigrants. If we have the money to somehow house immigrants then we clearly have the money for our own citizens. You don't need to hurt Americans to help migrants.
You really don't. Immigrants bring money IN to the economy so that would ALSO benefit Americans.

For the record, according to apocryphal family stories, one of my ancestors… or maybe just a distantly related cousin… was first mate on one of those ships. And after dropping off their passengers, they got out of dodge. So not EVERYBODY on the Mayflower was an illegal immigrant. Some were coyotes.

Generations of people born here aren't 'immigrants'. The settlers weren't 'immigrants'. There was no country to immigrate to prior to it's founding and creation. Do you know what 'immigrants' means?

By contrast Mughal Muslim Empire that ruled India was the 2nd largest economy with 22% of World GDP and like Cenk pointed Ming Dynasty China was the 1st largest economy and powerful country in the 15th 16th centuries.

What I find interesting is how this guy and many others use the talking point " My willingly family came here, blah, blah, blah!, and obmit the fact that one particular group (Black people) were unwillingly forced into this place not to mention stripped of their idenity/suffered inhumane notrosties. Boy, bye. Immigration, when done in an orderly and humane fashion, are vital for any society to thrive. However, one should not be allowed to willingly enter into any country without a plan, a sponsor, or being vetted and expect the taxpaying citizens of the country to provide all their needs.
