I just watched the episode, and they omitted a VERY important detail imo, about the reason why Maomao dislikes Lakan so much. I doubt they'll add it in S2 since there's no room for that. I don't think it's a spoiler, but just in case, I'll put it down below. . . . . . . . . . . So! We've seen in a flashback, Lakan's hand reaching out to little Maomao. Prior to this, he was actually trying to see Fenxian and got beaten up by Granny until his head bleed. He was resting when he saw little Maomao. She was collecting medicinal herbs, lol (not sure if she's just playing or doing it fr). Then, he saw Maomao's face; similar with Fenxian. He saw her warped finger. He got emotional and tried to reach her. But in Maomao' eyes, he was just a random stranger with blood all over his face, smiling gleefully, and trying to grab her. It traumatized Maomao. She's like, 'who tf is this scary person.' Granny noticed this and beat him up again. Luomen saw all of this, but he did nothing to defend his nephew and simply steer Maomao away from him; probably because he's aware of what Lakan did to Fenxian, leaving her for years (even tho he means no harm, the harm is already done). Ever since that day, Lakan always tried to get to Maomao, Granny would always beat him up, and he'd always bleeding while he said "Come me Papa!" Maomao slowly got used to his awful sight and just found him annoying, lol. So yeah. Apart from his gift that makes Maomao jealous, he's always a one-note person when he tried to reach her. He never bothered to try to fix his behavior to makes himself likeable in front of Maomao, he's basically just, "This is me! ME! Come live with me!" Maomao knows he means no harm, but annoying thing will always be an annoying thing in her eyes.

However, Maomao seems to have believed he meant she couldn't make accurate assumptions, while a genius like Lakan could. It's a severe hangup for her in the books.
The part with Lakan and Fengxian made me cried so much. Also I was about to lose my shit when I thought that Mao Mao was about to kiss Jin Shi. My brain almost stop working for a moment.

Its mainly the mom's fault for not being straightforward about being pregnant. Lakan was unfortunately dense not getting he got her pregnant and eventually he thought she died. Lakan's father has no idea about it and was only after his wellbeing when he was sent away. Grams thought lakan's a jerk for leaving a pregnant girl behind and if the mom was mad enough to cut her and her child's finger to curse him then she must not want to see him so grams hid her, the rest of the courtesans and maomao probably thought the same until recent events.
It's also pretty funny that Lakan's denseness got inherited by Maomao. She still thinks that the over-the-line moves by Jinshi are just his normal flirting. She doesn't wanna believe in a sec that he actually likes her. Her thinking that Jinshi is really a eunuch despite knowing he is a noble birth doesn't make it any better.
I saw some people blaming Lakan for not picking up FengXian's cue. I disagree considering most conflicts in relationship is caused by miscommunication, which FengXian did absolutely nothing of. "But Lakan did make a baby with FengXian and she had no choice but to carry her??" And FengXian could have aborted MaoMao anytime, abortifacients are common in the setting of the place and is normally used.
If they go by 1 volume per Cour coverage, like the did for Season 1, then currently we have like 13 Cours worth of plot left to cover (how many Seasons would that make is unknown, since Season 1 had 2 Cours, and is they go the same route, then that makes 6 & half Seasons).
Fengxian did break the rules and set it up, so she and Lakan could be together, but then he and everyone acted on their assumptions and thought the worst. Happenstance and tragedy, all in one.

Maomao is best girl for me but if we were going off of new anime this season, I'd have to say Rishe from 7th Time Loop. That was the cordyceps that she was looking at during the end that Jinshi gave her earlier. I love this episode, seeing Lakan realize that his love was still alive was nuts. He even sees her differently than the injured/ill person she is. The granny being desperate was funny after Meimei opened the doors lol.

In the Lakan situation, I'm not sure why your chat was arguing it was any of their faults. Lakan had no say in the matter, he was sent off to war and stuck longer than he wanted to be. He didn't have time to tell her he was leaving. It wasn't Fengxian's fault, because she thought he would be back in a few months, and knew Lakan would have bought her out. It's not the old lady's fault, as Fengxian was already diseased and mind broken by the time Lakan came back from war. It was just a ton of misunderstandings and bad circumstances that lead to it. At most I could see blame pointed at the old lady for implicating Fengxian was dead to Lakan years ago, but at that point she thought he had straight up impregnated and abandoned Fengxian, ruining her life and the establishments reputation. But not really her fault even still.
I'm an anime only, but pretty sure the old lady used the word 'gone' when she mentioned fengxian. That could mean a couple of things and ended up being misinterpreted by Lakan as well. However, this is japanese or Chinese we're talking about. Maybe knowing the exact word she used can clear this out. Even if she used 'gone' as in 'dead', in her perspective, like you mentioned, she sees Lakan as someone bad for fengxian etc.

yeah i think the reasons moa moa initially seemed to hate lakan was due to a combo of misunderstanding the mother situation, her adotive father praising him despite that, and akans insistance to be her father when she barely knew him, plus in general he seems manipulative even when hes not. i think during the assassination attempt on jinshi she probably realized his true nature and that everyting lakhan was doing was helping guide her to prevent it, though shes still annoyed that although he saw it coming he didnt really do anything personally

Lakan's reunion with Maomao's mother should've been in the penultimate episode, essentially in one episode. I felt like it lost the momentum, how heartbreaking their story was, since we waited for a week. Though that's just nitpicking, still love the anime adaptation and so glad the season 2 is announced already. 💕
It was important for their reunion to be in this episode, because it is supposed to highlight Maomao’s continued misinterpretation of the situations around her birth. She continues to believe that Fengxian only used getting pregnant as an attempt to get out, and subsequently went crazy when it didn’t work. When with their reunion shows that she went crazy thinking that both she and Maomao had been abandoned by Lakan, which is why she severed not only her own finger but part of Maomao’s as well. She had hidden the fact that she loved Lakan from everyone including Meimei, which Meimei realizes when she see’s the joy on Fengxian’s face when they’re reunited.
So far i dont have full list of anime for starting in april but i have a short list of i will watch weekly. We all have different taste in anime, but mine is certainly weird. 1. The New Gate(i like the manga and will be waiting for it) 2. Mahouka season 3(double seven up to ancient city insurrection from what was advertised) 3. Frieren is a masterpiece, but I'd say TAD is no less so, and that's in large part because Maomao is one of the best protagonists in anime history. Superbly developed over the course of the season, brilliantly intelligent, relatable, funny, strong...everything.
Maomao's mother does die to her disease eventually. Not sure if she dies there. Never really stated other then shortly after the purchase, she dies. It is super tragic
It was Fongshen's "mistake", it was Lakan's "mistake", it was granny's being "mother" and then it was the damm dad's "fault" not being "father" When argue about granny being "mother", let's put aside our modern day's righteousness moral since it does not work at telling what being human really mean. There're lots of subtle detail that you can put together and understand who granny truly is behind our superficial view of her, if she's cruel for keeping Lakan away from knowing Fongshen still alive, she might as well could just throw her away as soon as she became unusable good together with the deadweight that is Maomao, but no, Just look at her overall treatment toward Maomao and you will understand. The "black and white" argument is just wrong and ignorant.
While I agree that gandma never had wrong intention, she sealed the fate of Fongshen by not risking in trusting Louomen when her pride-girl was getting more and more ill from disease that is both fatal and devastating for girl in question. And before you say "she couldn't trust him because of his reputation and his bloodline", remember that alternative was letting Fongshen die in long and painful death. She choose pride and Fongshen's death over more desperate but choice that at least gave a CHANCE for happy ending. Not to mention that neither she nor Loumen could keep Maomao safe in Red Light District while Lakan could. His feelings about his daughter were also well known to anyone in Brothel, not to mention his feelings for Fongshen. Meimei is a proof of that. He was going there for YEARS. Yet Gradma decided to only see what she wanted to see. And while she had Fongshen well being in mind, all her decisions only worsened the situation by her own stubbornness. While Lakan was hardly innocent in all of this, he had no knowledge of pregnancy not to mention he wasn't neither rich nor powerful enough at that time to buy Fongshen out, without her price dropping. While he could have investigate why Fongshen price dropped, it would hardly change a thing. He would have still be sent out by his father and would not been able to buy Fongshen. Simply promising "I will buy you out in 6 month" would end up the same way because he was absent for 3 years and everyone would think he abandoned Fongshen. Fongshen was probably as "guilty" as Lakan, as she plotted her pregnancy behind everyone's backs. She knew that this "move" would ruin brothel's reputation, but if it would work out her price would drop and Lakan should be able to buy her. She was so sure of it that she forgot that there could be other circumstances that could ruin her plans not to mention that her communications skills really sucked. With the way she phrase it no wonder that someone not well versed in Red Light District state of affairs would be clueless of why her price dropped. Probably most high-born nobles have little to no idea about it especially when pregnancy is big no-no for courtesan for well known reason. I think the most blameable person in all of this Lakan father. He made it clear he doesn't care what his son is thinking and that rebuilding family honor should take priority. While he send Lakan without knowing about Maomao, her existence - while being aware of her mother's lowly background - wouldn't change his decision and I don't think he would bough Maomao and her mother out either.
I loved watching your reactions to apothecary can't wait for season 2. Have you thought of watching Kimi Ni Todoke their is 2 seasons and their is going to be a season 3 coming out in the near future it's such classic
If they include the buying courtesan scene in episode 23, it would be perfect. Coz i think the build up to that point would be better instead of cutting it and putting it right off the bat in the first minutes of the ep 24.
Next season besides Slime, Demon Slayer, Boku no Hero, and Mushoku Tensei being the obvious choices, I'm looking forward to checking out Wind Breaker and Sentai Daishikkaku.
Let me start by saying that I’ve not read any manga or books about this anime, and neither my wife. She has a theory that originally I ignored but I’m going to share. She believes that the main reason the old mamasan keep Fengxian in the house all this time because Fengxian is her daughter and Maomao is her granddaughter. That is my wife theory which I think it could be true. Again this is a theory not a spoiler unless is true then my wife wins.
I really wish there's a miracle for those two couples where Fengxian were able to be save by MaoMao brilliance. I really wanted to see Lakan and Fengxian live together happily..well, I guess i just ask too much😔
Maomao didn't mean for Lakan to buy out her Mom, she meant Meimei. Her Mom was horrible to her like she was to everyone other than Lakan. Which is why I don't think she deserved her happy ending. At the same time Lakan doesn't whatsoever deserve her hatred as his only crime is acting slightly creepy. If you ask me that's one of the things that are writen weirdly in this show. Her hatred for Lakan just doesn't make sense for someone so logical. She says herself that she doesn't hate him, only dislikes him, but refuses to even acknowledge him. As someone that's been following this series for a long time it just honestly gets rather infuriating. It's like she's a dumb teenager that hates her father just because. That just doesn't fit Maomaos character whatsoever. And the whole jelousy thing is also too petty to justify abject hatred.
Another (not so) important detail they omitted, but it's just nice to know: In ep 18. Remember when Meimei said Lakan is not such a bad guy when we see past his shortcomings? Maomao knows Meimei loves Lakan. That's why he was hoping Lakan would buy Meimei instead of her mom. Maomao has a soft spot for Meimei because she's always been a family to her, so she wanted her to have a decent life after her courtesan term is over. Rather than some random customer, it's better if Meimei could be together with the man she loves. Even if Lakan couldn't love her back, at least he could provide her with decent treatment and she could become a dutiful wife. The blue wilted rose Maomao sent to Lakan actually represents Meimei, but she anticipated the possibility that Lakan would not get it. She was hoping he would buy Meimei, but she also predicted that Meimei would lead him to Fenxian instead. In a way, Maomao was dancing to show her respect for Meimei, even though she's not the one being bought. As it's shown in this episode, Maomao actually couldn't care less about her biological mother because she has never act like a mother to her, and she never claimed to be one in front of her.

He didn't have time to tell her he was leaving. It wasn't Fengxian's fault, because she thought he would be back in a few months, and knew Lakan would have bought her out. It's not the old lady's fault, as Fengxian was already diseased and mind broken by the time Lakan came back from war. It was just a ton of misunderstandings and bad circumstances that lead to it. At most I could see blame pointed at the old lady for implicating Fengxian was dead to Lakan years ago, but at that point she thought he had straight up impregnated and abandoned Fengxian, ruining her life and the establishments reputation. But not really her fault even still.
I'm an anime only, but pretty sure the old lady used the word 'gone' when she mentioned fengxian. That could mean a couple of things and ended up being misinterpreted by Lakan as well. However, this is japanese or Chinese we're talking about. Maybe knowing the exact word she used can clear this out. Even if she used 'gone' as in 'dead', in her perspective, like you mentioned, she sees Lakan as someone bad for fengxian etc.

Reason why maomao said lakan can discern her and luoman was her deduction, but she doesn't know that lakan can only see her face but with luoman, lakan sees him as a unique Go stone which is the bishop if i remember correctly
yeah i think the reasons moa moa initially seemed to hate lakan was due to a combo of misunderstanding the mother situation, her adotive father praising him despite that, and akans insistance to be her father when she barely knew him, plus in general he seems manipulative even when hes not.
i think during the assassination attempt on jinshi she probably realized his true nature and that everyting lakhan was doing was helping guide her to prevent it, though shes still annoyed that although he saw it coming he didnt really do anything personally
I can see she will be punished and he choose poison for her punishment.
And the poison was ressurection poison, thats stopped her heart for a moment.

I think Lakan's intuition is based on his ability to see patterns.
Lakan's reunion with Maomao's mother should've been in the penultimate episode, essentially in one episode. I felt like it lost the momentum, how heartbreaking their story was, since we waited for a week. Though that's just nitpicking, still love the anime adaptation and so glad the season 2 is announced already. 💕

It was important for their reunion to be in this episode, because it is supposed to highlight Maomao’s continued misinterpretation of the situations around her birth. She continues to believe that Fengxian only used getting pregnant as an attempt to get out, and subsequently went crazy when it didn’t work. When with their reunion shows that she went crazy thinking that both she and Maomao had been abandoned by Lakan, which is why she severed not only her own finger but part of Maomao’s as well. She had hidden the fact that she loved Lakan from everyone including Meimei, which Meimei realizes when she see’s the joy on Fengxian’s face when they’re reunited.
So far i dont have full list of anime for starting in april but i have a short list of i will watch weekly. We all have different taste in anime, but mine is certainly weird.
1. The New Gate(i like the manga and will be waiting for it)
2. Mahouka season 3(double seven up to ancient city insurrection from what was advertised)
3. New season of slime(rimuru)

Frieren is a masterpiece, but I'd say TAD is no less so, and that's in large part because Maomao is one of the best protagonists in anime history. Superbly developed over the course of the season, brilliantly intelligent, relatable, funny, strong...everything.
Maomao's mother does die to her disease eventually. Not sure if she dies there. Never really stated other then shortly after the purchase, she dies. It is super tragic

It was Fongshen's "mistake", it was Lakan's "mistake", it was granny's being "mother" and then it was the damm dad's "fault" not being "father"
When argue about granny being "mother", let's put aside our modern day's righteousness moral since it does not work at telling what being human really mean. There're lots of subtle detail that you can put together and understand who granny truly is behind our superficial view of her, if she's cruel for keeping Lakan away from knowing Fongshen still alive, she might as well could just throw her away as soon as she became unusable good together with the deadweight that is Maomao, but no, Just look at her overall treatment toward Maomao and you will understand. The "black and white" argument is just wrong and ignorant.
While I agree that gandma never had wrong intention, she sealed the fate of Fongshen by not risking in trusting Louomen when her pride-girl was getting more and more ill from disease that is both fatal and devastating for girl in question. And before you say "she couldn't trust him because of his reputation and his bloodline", remember that alternative was letting Fongshen die in long and painful death. She choose pride and Fongshen's death over more desperate but choice that at least gave a CHANCE for happy ending. Not to mention that neither she nor Loumen could keep Maomao safe in Red Light District while Lakan could. His feelings about his daughter were also well known to anyone in Brothel, not to mention his feelings for Fongshen. Meimei is a proof of that. He was going there for YEARS. Yet Gradma decided to only see what she wanted to see. And while she had Fongshen well being in mind, all her decisions only worsened the situation by her own stubbornness.
While Lakan was hardly innocent in all of this, he had no knowledge of pregnancy not to mention he wasn't neither rich nor powerful enough at that time to buy Fongshen out, without her price dropping. While he could have investigate why Fongshen price dropped, it would hardly change a thing. He would have still be sent out by his father and would not been able to buy Fongshen. Simply promising "I will buy you out in 6 month" would end up the same way because he was absent for 3 years and everyone would think he abandoned Fongshen.
Fongshen was probably as "guilty" as Lakan, as she plotted her pregnancy behind everyone's backs. She knew that this "move" would ruin brothel's reputation, but if it would work out her price would drop and Lakan should be able to buy her. She was so sure of it that she forgot that there could be other circumstances that could ruin her plans not to mention that her communications skills really sucked. With the way she phrase it no wonder that someone not well versed in Red Light District state of affairs would be clueless of why her price dropped. Probably most high-born nobles have little to no idea about it especially when pregnancy is big no-no for courtesan for well known reason.
I think the most blameable person in all of this Lakan father. He made it clear he doesn't care what his son is thinking and that rebuilding family honor should take priority. While he send Lakan without knowing about Maomao, her existence - while being aware of her mother's lowly background - wouldn't change his decision and I don't think he would bough Maomao and her mother out either.

If they include the buying courtesan scene in episode 23, it would be perfect. Coz i think the build up to that point would be better instead of cutting it and putting it right off the bat in the first minutes of the ep 24.

Yay!! From Pokemon Legends Z-A, to Monster Hunter Wilds to S2 of Apothecary Diaries...
2025 is going to be AWESOME!!
Let me start by saying that I’ve not read any manga or books about this anime, and neither my wife. She has a theory that originally I ignored but I’m going to share. She believes that the main reason the old mamasan keep Fengxian in the house all this time because Fengxian is her daughter and Maomao is her granddaughter. That is my wife theory which I think it could be true. Again this is a theory not a spoiler unless is true then my wife wins.
I'm most excited for Spice and Wolf next season
What I wait for next: Mushoku Tensei, My Hero Academia, Demon Slayer (probably in that order too :)
I really wish there's a miracle for those two couples where Fengxian were able to be save by MaoMao brilliance. I really wanted to see Lakan and Fengxian live together happily..well, I guess i just ask too much😔

Maomao didn't mean for Lakan to buy out her Mom, she meant Meimei. Her Mom was horrible to her like she was to everyone other than Lakan. Which is why I don't think she deserved her happy ending. At the same time Lakan doesn't whatsoever deserve her hatred as his only crime is acting slightly creepy. If you ask me that's one of the things that are writen weirdly in this show. Her hatred for Lakan just doesn't make sense for someone so logical. She says herself that she doesn't hate him, only dislikes him, but refuses to even acknowledge him. As someone that's been following this series for a long time it just honestly gets rather infuriating. It's like she's a dumb teenager that hates her father just because. That just doesn't fit Maomaos character whatsoever. And the whole jelousy thing is also too petty to justify abject hatred.

Another (not so) important detail they omitted, but it's just nice to know:
In ep 18. Remember when Meimei said Lakan is not such a bad guy when we see past his shortcomings? Maomao knows Meimei loves Lakan. That's why he was hoping Lakan would buy Meimei instead of her mom. Maomao has a soft spot for Meimei because she's always been a family to her, so she wanted her to have a decent life after her courtesan term is over. Rather than some random customer, it's better if Meimei could be together with the man she loves. Even if Lakan couldn't love her back, at least he could provide her with decent treatment and she could become a dutiful wife. The blue wilted rose Maomao sent to Lakan actually represents Meimei, but she anticipated the possibility that Lakan would not get it. She was hoping he would buy Meimei, but she also predicted that Meimei would lead him to Fenxian instead.
In a way, Maomao was dancing to show her respect for Meimei, even though she's not the one being bought.
As it's shown in this episode, Maomao actually couldn't care less about her biological mother because she has never act like a mother to her, and she never claimed to be one in front of her.
