    Wilbur and Orville Wright were white. They "invented" flight for lack of a better term. So, he's saying "If you fly in a plane, you're appropriating something white." Which, is obviously not true, but true in the sense that he was talking as far as the rest of the conversation. Good reaction!

    Depending on the "version" of Elvis's biography, he appreciated the black entertainers which is why he wanted to do the music he did, but his true passion was gospel, even had a favorite song for his mama. I'm not an Elvis fan, but I love music history.

      The "real" truth is that he grew up in the ghetto. So white culture wasnt his culture. And for some fucked up reason (the color of his skin) black culture couldnt be his either.

    sort of a bio, Priscilla met Evis when she was 14, but she was 21 when she married him. His manager kept control of Elvis as well, he wouldn't let Elvis perform outside of the US because he wasn't allowed to leave the country and was afraid he would lose Elvis. Many in Hollywood said Elvis could have been a great actor his manager Parker thought the money was only in his music. Yes, he did die on the toilet. He was heavy on drugs, most were pain killers and some for depression. Later they found that Elvis was in the early stages of MS or Parkinson, I can't remember which one, probably why Elvis took drugs.

    Bill was referencing the one of many inventions that we enjoy today and took it further than he probably should have by mentioning the Airplane being a culturally appropriated event by people labeled white. What is so funny is that Bill's humor is always asking the questions we all would like to ask, but in todays modern era, are afraid of triggering over sensitive groups. I liken his humor to the Dave Chappell style of presenting the obvious and then taking you down the road of ridiculous, yet making complete common sense of the touchy topics.

    • @drdr76

    I hate that Netflix cut that in the middle of the bit. The rest of the bit has him saying, that yeah black people are smart enough to have invented air travel first but if they had, then their music might have suffered and then the situation would be reversed. The synopsis sounds dry but it was a funny call back.

  • @RobertNorthrop
    @RobertNorthrop ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I think Bill Burr is hilarious but I would not take his word as gospel on Elvis Presley who grew up around black people, listening to gospel in revival tents, crashing juke joints and hanging out on Beal Street in Memphis, listening to rhythm and blues. His circles included people who played music that had been passed down generationally. To say he appropriated black music without giving credit is inaccurate. As for his wife, Priscilla - yes she was a minor when he met her. But he did not marry her until she was an adult (22 years old). According to her, they didn't even consummate until they were married. His pill addiction was well known - and severe. Doctors at the time were not aware of the damager prescribing large amounts of barbiturates, amphetamines and opiates could have on a person, though they did try to ween Elvis off of them when the effect became apparent. While Elvis became overweight in his final two years, the pills exacerbated his condition - making him more bloated, constipated and destroying his organs. I hope that in the end, people continue to remember Elvis for not how he died but that he was a super talented entertainer as well as a kind, generous and decent man. In the end, Burr is hilarious and I love him as a comedian - but even he would say don't take him seriously as a historian or an expert on any other topic.

    A lot of things about Elvis get twisted. Elvis married Pricilla 23 days before her 22nd birthday. She did move in at Graceland at 17. Lisa Marie was born exactly 9 months, to the day, after their wedding. What Elvis did was bring a new type of music called Rock 'n' Roll which was a fusion of R&B, country, and gospel to the masses at a time when no black person could get radio air time. By doing that he created an interest and demand which began opening those doors for black musicians. Had he not come along when he did the relevance of black music may have taken years longer, and many of the early entertainers of color, icons in early rock, may have never been heard of. Except as influences to performers who came later. The entire landscape of music would be different. Not only that, as if that is not enough, Elvis was the first musical entertainer. Singing and dancing just didn't exist before Elvis, outside Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, and the Rockettes. I can't forget Sammy Davis Jr., who was as much a part of breaking down those color barriers as anyone.

    Just to add a point that Bill and/or his wife doesn't get exactly right, yes he played music and songs written by black folks who didn't get their due credit. BUT, he played the music he was given by his managers and producers. He had no say in the matter. Elvis constantly gave back to the black community. He loved them as much as he loved his own family. He was one of the most generous men of his stature to ever exist. But he had no choice in his music decisions for the most part. Hopefully this statement doesn't come off wrong, but I just hate that people treat Elvis like he was traveling around looking for underprivileged black folk to take advantage of to line his pockets. It's just factually untrue. Unfortunately back in those much more racists times, it's just how it worked for white "pop" stars. Producers didn't want black people representing their labels so they'd give white people that black flavor so their racists customers could stomach it. Not saying it's right, just saying that how it was.

      But the issue is specifically the rock & roll Elvis of the early days, who supposedly stole R&B music from black artists. If he did, then everybody who covers (or samples) a song does. "Stealing" in music is when you do not credit the original writers, who have their compositional and publishing rights. All songwriters who had their songs covered by Elvis or who wrote specifically for him, were happy to give up their publishing rights (a contractual device EP's sleezy manager came up with), because of the unprecedented astronomic sales figures to be expected when Elvis Presley released a song. So they would settle for the composition rights, because they knew having an Elvis record on their resume would give a huge injection to their songwriting careers (and their bank accounts all the same).
      "He played the music he was given by his managers and producers" is untrue: the only song Col. Tom Parker ever suggested to Elvis was "Are You Lonesome Tonight?". Producers usually don't suggest songs - A&R managers and publishers do. Elvis was suggested many songs from his publisher's catalogues, out of which he always chose the titles himself. In addition he got a lot of ideas for songs to record by listening to the radio, other people's records and going to see shows. The only times he had no real say in what to record was when he was making movies and he was contractually bound to make soundtrack records with songs that needed to fit a movie-script. Which is about through all of the sixties. @BrittReacts: that's why the '68 TV-special was called "comeback special", because it marked his return to television (indeed the medium that catapulted him to (inter)national stardom - like Bill B. said) and performing live on stage.

Not only can’t we here it but you’ve completely missed some of the funniest jokes in the videos. Anyways you’re gorgeous and have great energy so I’ll keep watching. Cheers

    Elvis Presley married his first wife, Priscilla Ann Wagner, on May 1, 1967, in Las Vegas. She was just 21 years old at the time, while Elvis was already 32. The couple had met three years earlier, in 1964, when Priscilla was just 18 and Elvis was 25. They dated for a little over six years before finally tying the knot.

    Hmmm...Burr's synopsis of Elvis is true in the same way describing George Washington as a slave owner with false teeth is true. Sam Phillip's of Sun Records was the "old man" who discovered Elvis, he did not describe Elvis or black music that way. He actually promoted black music and was known for treating all his recording artists very well.
    Elvis did not "appropriate" anything, he combined many styles and created something unique.
    Burr is talented but he's a punk when it comes to The King.

    I’m sure someone else has answered you by now, but Bill admits that his last example was out of line and his wife, Nia, makes him explain to her that he knows that black people did not historically have the educational or financial opportunities to invent things like planes.

    • @joshbull623
      @joshbull623 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      "black people did not historically have the educational or financial opportunities to invent things like planes." It is a bit of a cop out. People of color did not have educational or financial opportunities 'in the U.S.' . While is was similar in places like Europe though for a shorter period of time, this was not the case everywhere in the world. Also, even what I just said wasn't entirely accurate, "most" black people did not have the educational or financial opportunities to invent a plane would be correct. I mean one of the most educated and intelligent people of color in the U.S.'s history was Frederick Douglass who actually escaped from slavery and not just discriminatory states and this was in the 1800's. To simply say black people were in no position to do it is dismissing the significance of what was required to successfully make the invention. It is also just a historical fallacy as presented.
      If you read all that and still think "that is BS", here is the pin in this thread. By 1900, 3 years before the plane was officially invented and successfully tested, there was over 1.5 billion people in the world, hundreds of millions of which were white with education and finances available to do the deed........and they didn't and some even tried and couldn't. Specific to the U.S. based on census bureau records, there were over 81 million white people in the U.S., yet none did it, again, some tried and failed, only two truly succeeded. Not to mention every other race and ethnicity, again, over 1.5 billion of which black people were one of the smallest fractions, and none of them did it. If 'more'(because some did) black people had the education, opportunities and finances to potentially build an airplane, it is highly improbable it would have changed anything.

    Elvis was very connected to the black community and saying he appropriated a culture is just ridiculous shit. If it was true it would still also be true that he brought that culture to the mainstream and paved the wave for the persons in that culture to follow in the wake of his popularity. He opened doors, either way you look at it.

    Not to underestimate the brain power of Bill Burr, he could be referencing the development of jet technology by German scientists during WWII. Claiming people were appropriating that time period of German culture is very low. Also, I don't think anyone is making it from New York to L.A in 6 hours in a commercial prop plane. Assuming the 6 hour part is pivotal to the joke. I could be wrong.
