Actually that’s part of it but he’s grabbing his shirt because of the tightness he feels in his chest due to the “elevation” Change from midtown to 125th street. Like asthma or what not

I really relate to this skit. I moved into a section 8 apartment in an entirely black neighborhood in Kansas City with my blonde-haired blue-eyed girlfriend. At first, I thought all kinds of bad things would happen to us. The funny thing is that we were so alien to the environment that we were literally ignored. It was like we were totally outside the power dynamics in the neighborhood, we were outside the rules of the game. Eventually, everything normalized and we made friends and it wasn't different from living anywhere else.
Yup, I grew up in jersey city NJ and if you just don't act weird, then you'll be alright. Granted there are "bad parts" of every community unfortunately
I have found that 99 percent of people do not think or care about race. That obsession belongs to the news anchors and politicians trying to drum up business for themselves.

@@elg94 I think there's a difference though, a black american neighbourhood will still have an american cultural mindset from a black perspective. Arab neighbourhoods that have more 1st or 2nd generation immigrants will probably have a more of an arabic cultural mindset ingrained in the community. White americans will have far more things in common with black americans when compared to newer arab americans, and people see bias and prejudice differently from other parts of the world with more traditional views.

Bill is easily my favorite comedian to watch people react to. He's able to include every culture an race in a joke but in a way that makes everyone laugh together instead of hate each other. One thing I will say tho, if anyone ever (any race) has dirty shoes that dont look like a form of work shoes/boots are scary. Those people usually have lost everything and dont give a shit anymore lol

Bill Burr is absolutely hysterical. I went to graduate school at 124'th and Park in NYC for 4 years and I never had an issue (and that includes a funny incident when me and a bunch of friends got dropped off at the school at about midnight after returning from a ski trip and we had to walk down Martin Luther King Blvd to a subway station with our skis, boots, etc....we just got a bunch of puzzled looks).
He is now married to a lovely black lady, and has 2 wonderful kiddos.

as a white guy who grew up in the West Brighton and Park Hill projects on Staten Island all Black friends dress sharp with clean look so yeah def. a NYC thing. Black friends make orange, brown colors and such pop well with their skin. I wish I could. I'm pasty pale haha.

Fun bodega fact: I had a Spanish tutor from Chile for a while (I'm moving to South America). One day after I got back from visiting a friend in NYC we were having a conversation about my trip. I mentioned bodegas and she got confused about why I would go into one, which in turn got me confused. As it turns out, the word "bodega" in Spanish actually refers to a warehouse rather than a shop. The way it's used in NYC came from Puerto Rico and Cuba, but that's not what the word refers to in most hispanic countries. Ciao!
Yep, the word is used both ways in Mexico where i learned it. They usually say Tienda, but if memory se4ves theres a big store named just Bodega. Its been a while though.
@@williamhogge5549 The process of learning Spanish has got me so fascinated with language. I even picked up a Noam Chomsky book to dive a little deeper into the cognitive side of it. Since I'm going to South America I think I might try learning Quechua after I'm comfortable with Spanish.

The world has come a long way in the 20 years since I first went to Mexico. I highly recommend internet tutors and language buddies.

Absolutely love the backstory of NY to South to NY... I don't believe we ever get to know each other until we break bread with one another and that can be over food... that can be at church... can be in the hospital with your head in your hand trying to hold back tears or two strangers standing outside a nursery smiling down on our future. Bill runs the envelope for reaction but when you listen to him and his Beloved talk... you get to know a little bit more of the man who is offstage. ... the twist on the dirty sneakers is 180 degrees... be careful with the man wearing work boots that are not scuffed. Respect the man who has resoled his boots 3x over so he could provide a roof and a plate... Same for the woman who can't keep her nails done because 3rd shift for the pay differential is what you do for you and for yours for a better life. That got stupid heavy.. Burr is real, plays the game as needed, and is wicked fast smart in defending when arses try to prey.

When people say "you can't say that, people are too sensitive" I always think: Bill Burr can say it. Mel Brooks can say it. If you are funny and you say it with respect you can tackle the most taboo subjects like race, gender, or sexuality. If you are making lazy jokes and repeating sad, stale stereotypes that diminish people then yeah, you haven't been able to do that for a while now.

I was like 16 and my family and I took a trip to NYC and we took the wrong train or got off at the wrong station bc we ended up in Harlem. It was mid day and I guess we looked so out of place that everyone was super nice and guided us out.

My X husband and I went to NY to visit his Grandmother who lived in Brooklyn and we took the subway into the city, but on our way back, we got on the wrong train and ended up at 119th Street in Harlem at 11pm. I could not stop laughing, but my husband was freaking out. I think it has changed a little since 1969 though.

I lived in Queens the first 50 years of my life. Been living upstate now for the past 16 years. I can't tell you what my favorite thing about a Bodega is, but my least favorite is that late at night you have to order and pay for stuff from outside, through a plexi-type opening

Yeah remember a few years ago in NY was in a restaurant downtown, we asked the waiter how to get to 125th Street, and he looked as if we were from Mars we wanted to go to Abyssinian Baptist Church to hear the famous pastor and choir 🔥🔥after service we went to a soul food diner and the banter from us and the other customers was fantastic they couldn't believe I knew a lot of the Gospel Greats and jeering me said I had white skin and a Black soul 😀 🤷who knew 😀

I attended City College for a while, in the early eighties. Except for Morningside Park, near the subway, which my mom warned me about, I was never accosted there.
Today, Harlem is more mixed than back then. I think maybe back then east Harlem was maybe a little more like its reputation, but to be fair, I never ventured there.

Bodegas are all over New York. In pretty much every area except really rich ones. For those unaware, they are basically just privately owned convenience stores. Most have liquor licenses too though. Basically a very small 7-11 with beer. Often owned by an Indian or Asian family. They have a pretty huge variety in a very small space.
