I have used Windows Server 2003 for years, and had used it as a multiuse server for my network. But I have never been able to setup a private DNS Server, and with it a Private Domain.

the hostname is also called a domain name. If the domain name is completely specified including a top-level domain if the Internet, then you can call that hostname a fully qualified domain name (FQDN). If the host is registered and can be reached on the Internet, then the fully qualified domain names for the devices would accessible from anywhere. [ continued... ]

Hey DM, excellent question well hostnames are sometimes confusing as they have a double meaning.
A hostname is a label that is assigned to a device connected to a computer network in your case it is a server. Hostname is used to identify the device. It can be a single word or phrase, or they may have appended a domain name, which is a name in a Domain Name System (DNS), separated from the host specific label by a period (dot). Well answer for your second question.
The DNS "Domain Name System" is made for mapping the ip address with Name if the ip is changed it won't work. Best way is in DHCP environment you should reserve the ip address of the systems so that system will always get the same ip address.
Well excellent question Dynamic DNS refers to the process of dynamically updating a DNS zone (such as yourdomain) with different information. While occasionally useful in a closed network, i believe this is a security risk on the Internet. If your enable dynamic DNS updates, there would be the possibility that someone could fraudulently point your website at a different address. so if i am configuring a public server for a web site i will select do not allow dynamic updates.

Hi Waqas, thanks for watching the video, ok lets see in your lan setting on the dns you have added is the local dns server IP: "192.168.1.11" once done that in the secondary dns you have also add the dns server ip given by your internet service provider right ?

Hey JPP, thanks for watching the video, Well you see its a DNS "Domain Name System" so the answer of your first question is the DNS will only recognize FQDN Fully "qualified domain name" and "tech (dot) petercrys (dot) com"), is a FQDN and tech is not.

i) I'm working on a 192.168.* LAN; how can I connect from one machine to another using its machine name only (e.g. 'ftp machine1"), not its full name (e.g., "ftp machine1.domain.ext")?
ii) My LAN uses DHCP; if I create one entry on my DNS for machine1 with its existing IP, how can I check if machine1 will update its DNS entry in case of IP change from the DHCP?

I have issue in my envrinoment, i follow your video and configure the DNS on one of VM, but after that i am not able to connect the internet, i dont know what i am missing.......I have 2 VMs, both joined to domain and i can ping eachother but issue why internet not wokring....if i remove the DNS its working...
VM1 = DNS & ip 192.168.1.11
Vm2 Machine joined the domain 192.168.1.12( in DNS setting i gave the 192.168.1.11)........
any thoughts
does the ip address need to be local or live ip address
i also want you to explain what type problem generally we get in realtime situations.

Hi Sachin, thanks for the video tutorial! Two difficulties I face now:
i) only full names are recognised (e.g., "tech (dot) petercrys (dot) com"), not shortcuts (e.g., "tech") on my LAN;
ii) I defined my DNS as primary DNS for my computers, but they do not seem to update their IP, I had to write each of them on the DNS.
How can I solve those two issues?

I've been following your tutorial and tried to add multiple sites on my IIS 8.5. But, nothing's work. I've been configure my DNS setting: forward (add host) & reverse (pointer to host), bindings the site to the selected domain, and setting my IP Address in DNS tab of Advanced TCP/IP Settings.
What's different from your setting is just I set my IIS port into 7080 since the default port 80 is in used.
Do you have any idea what's going wrong?
Oh ya, after setting up all, I've deleted the DNS cache by type the command: ipconfig /flushdns on my console. But still, nothing's worked.

i installed windows server 2012 on a virtualBox. my host machine has windows 8. in this demo, should i use the IP address of the host or the virtual machine? i notice two IP addresses are different
Hey Mubeezi, if you have configured dns on your virtual machine you should use the ip address of your virtual machine. you can also change the network settings of your virtual machine so that the ip address with same as your host machine. in yor virtual machine network settings you will find a setting call replicate your physical network. let me know if you have any problem or you can also give me remote access of your system using teamviewer. you can contact me on skype my skype id: sachin.samy

Now coming back to your question [ does not resolve Hostnames ] it is most likely that your dns is not configure properly and the FQDN is already register somewhere else. Nslookup finds name server information for domains by querying DNS. If you still having problem you give me the access to your system using teamviewer and I will try to solved it for you. Dns is on windows server 2012
Dhcp is on Debian server.
On Windows server 2012 there is a domain: vallalkozas.local
We can log in, in a Windows 7 pc through this Domain.
I cant ping Dns from Debian server, but i can ping the IP.
Windows server and windows7 can ping everything. They are good.
Any idea?

Yes if you're having public ip on your server you can use it as a DNS server but remember if your server goes down or if there is a problem with the internet connection of the server everything which was using your dns server will also goes down.

Well answer for your first ques is you have to add primary DNS suffix see below.
1. Open System in Control Panel.
2. On the Computer Name tab, click Change.
3. Click More
4. Under Primary DNS suffix of this computer, type the DNS suffix you want to use.
5. If you want your computer to automatically update the DNS suffix if you become a member of a different Windows domain, select the Change primary DNS suffix when domain membership changes check box.

I'm developing an app i was considering hosting on my home server. I was looking into other options. possibly pointing a domain name from godaddy to the IP address of my server. Does this sound logical, or am i totally off?

I followed this perfectly, but i have the uncheckable object in every new zone checkable and when i run nslookup and i type in the dns adress I made it says
Server: UnKnown
Adress: Bla Bla Bla i dont wanna copy it to here
DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.
*** Request to UnKnown timed-out
whoops when i put * i meant to put ***
ugh i meat to put three *'s instead of one
I'm dumb its contacting nothing which causes it to timeout :P
