O Allaah, send Your salaah (grace, honour and mercy) upon Muhammad and upon his wives and offspring, as You sent Your salaah upon Ibraaheem, and send Your blessings upon Muhammad and upon his wives and offspring, as You sent Your blessings upon the family of Ibraaheem. You are indeed Praiseworthy, Most Glorious.
Actually salaat is celebration. It would taste logically meaningful if we say O Alllah celebrate upon "on" muhamed since celebration is an act of expressing showing cheering and supporting someone.
Here, Allah's celebration on us as humans is removing us from darkness to light. On the other hand, we celebrate "for or to" Allah for His unlimited glory and uniqueness as well as His ever projecting mercy of guiding and maintaining us.
When we call Allah to celebrate on muhamed He, His highness, in return, celebrates on us. When we celebrate on a jinaasa, a dead person, we are calling Allah to show that person mercy and satisfaction.
