    After watching this video I was reminded of Mace Windu, and another innovative Jedi in Star Wars Lore; albeit a philosophical innovator rather than a martial one: Kyle Katarn.
    A duel between WIndu and Katarn would be an interesting match-up, because with all their powers, skills, experience, tactics, personalities, philosophies, convictions, mentalities, and abilities leave no clear winner.

    Add me to the list of people who hate the bad rap Niman gets. My Sith Lord on SWTOR is an Exar Kun-style Niman master, after all.
    Actually, I think Kao Cen Darach is a far better poster boy for Niman than Exar Kun. Exar Kun did use it, but his application of Force abilities still generally fell into the "blunt instrument" usage, whereas Darach personified the seamless integration of powers into lightsaber sequences that Niman is known for, in addition to his versatility and unpredictability displayed in his fight scene. If only they gave him a side comic or something, because I would have loved to see more of that guy!

    • @memine8795
      @memine8795 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I'm with you man, Niman does have a bad rap due to how difficult it is to master, but once mastered could make it's practitioner a master of everything and know how to use the options provided by the form. It's a jack of all trades form with the potential to make anyone with the dedication and will to put the effort into it a massive threat to their enemies

    • @SamuraiJedi7
      @SamuraiJedi7 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I think Niman is a lot like Juyo in that it should be very different because of who could be using it. The differences in Niman users like Darth Krayt, Durach, and Exar Kun are a good example of this.

      I agree that Niman gets a bad rap but I think the problem is is that so many niman practitioners only use the diplomatic version the Darth plagues version becomes where all the prominent swordsmen use other forms and forget how skilled a true master of the other two versions can be because no one uses the other two versions the Darth krayt and kao cen darach versions

    I really hope we'll get more material regarding Cao Sen Darach in the future from the writers, he's an evident master swordsman with a powerful grasp on The Force, but what are his accolades and past accomplishments?
    From what little we have of his background, we see his ideas often clashed with the Jedi Council, this seems like a potential story of it's own, not to mention the minor hint of his newly awakened Clairvoyance adding to a still blossoming potential within him, while we may never see the full extend of that ability as his death would impede such progress, it *Does* posite that Cao may have a minor touch with the more esoteric mysteries of The Force itself, maybe something that could be added to a possible backstory?

  • @headtle
    @headtle 10 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    ***** Post 22:17-I think you're right on with this wish. I think the bad rap that the form has received due to the Jedi that fell at Geonosis was not to illustrate the weakness of the form, but to illustrate the weakness of the Jedi just before Palpatine set the perfect Jedi-trap that was the Clone Wars. The fact that so many Jedi fell reflected what Yoda finally realized in the ROTS novelization; the Jedi had spent too much time prepping themselves to fight the last war and not the next one. He felt the Sith would return in the same manner and the Jedi had become complacent waiting for that return. Had the Jedi heeded the warning that was Maul's appearance 10 years previous at Naboo, there would have been more battle-ready masters but sadly, they chose to take the incorrect mindset of "wait and see".
    I think Niman can lend itself to weakness if it's just used as a "hobby" technique by Consulars who are more interested in the study of the Force. However, I think the expanded universe has gone a very long way to rehab the image of the form since it's debut in 2002 with dueling powerhouses like Exar Kun, Palpatine and Darach utilizing it to great effect.
    Personally, any sword-being worth their salt should have built a regular Niman practice into their lightsaber sequence just based on the fact that it did lend itself to giving options in a fight, but it would also teach a being how to chain force-attacks into their sequence, let alone how to use duel blades. The fact that it can train a duelist into thinking of unconventional counters is completely invaluable into reaching the higher levels of saber mastery in this universe.
    To me, any being who picks up a lightsaber and neglects the study of Niman into their practice is basically setting the clock to a countdown to destruction.

    • @headtle
      @headtle 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Touche'. I'll concede there was a bit of a rhetorical flourish in my closing there. I was on a roll and probably should have reeled myself in a bit.
      But you hit the nail on the head when it comes to something that i've always referred to as a beings' "home form" or "backbone" form.
      I had a kung fu instructor once impress upon me this maxim when learning a fighting form: "Don't be like your favorite teacher. Be like all of them." What he meant by that was, even there are elements in your teachers/fellow students sequences that you don't like, you can still learn it as a cautionary tale or still finding a way of incorporating something that works into your own sequence. Mixing and matching all of your influences to create a standard form for yourself while maintaining a foundation in one form that you can fall back to in a pinch.
      In my opinion, if I lived in that universe I'd opt for a home form of Soresu paired with Vaapad with a little bit of Niman thrown in for good measure would make a being incredibly difficult to defeat. Especially if they're chaining-in Force Attacks into their Lightsaber sequence. I think near-mastery of Niman (since its nigh-impossible to truly master) would give a duelist a grab bag of abilities to pull when needed if Soresu/Vaapad wasn't doing the trick. As also understanding how you'd apply the different forms into your sequence based on your approach is incredibly important. For example; Makashi blade control, Ataru slashes/body as a weapon mentality, Shien blast-deflection Shii-Cho randomness, Sokan for situational awareness, Force Attacks, Duel blade work, etc. etc.
      And I think what it comes down to is getting people on the same page of seeing the power/equality of Niman to the other forms. I'm really curious to see how they adapt the forms for the new films. Do we know who the new fight coordinator is? Or are they going with Gillard again?

      Sorry I would actually use it hybridisation of the ones I mentioned. • @mojosilver82
      @mojosilver82 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      While I do think niman is a good style. I will admit it has flaws to. It just pisses me off that it is thought of as a bad style not worth learning. The other styles focus on one thing, or one way of doing something. And while it can make them more predicable. It also means there better at that thing then anyone else. But niman use a little bit of everything. It does not do anything better then the other styles and that is one of it's weakness. (That and dummies use the emphasis on moderation to mean they only need a moderate amount of practice to make this style work.) But you have more way to respond. And even that is as much a strength as it is a weakness. More options is not always a good thing. In a fight the other styles will quickly do what there train to do. Where a niman user will need to think about what's happening, then think about how to responded, then act. Niman practitioner's need intuition, improvisation, and creativity in combat. Rather than the rote responses the other forms rely on. Now after all that said, if I was a jedi (actually I'd probably be a sith) I would learn soresu first. Then niman. That way I'd always have a solid soresu defense to fall back on while I deiced how best to respond. And niman would be my omniweapon to respond however I need to.

    • @benerdick_cumberbiatch
      @benerdick_cumberbiatch 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dragon XL Gaming I think form six and five are easily the best. They seem to be the more versatile. You've got everything covered. Blast deflection, strength orientated dueling covered by form 5 then you have a bit of skill in all forms with niman along with unarmed combat, fluid transition into telekinetic strikes and duel wielding covered by form six. Soreso is a bit too specialised and passive for me. I'd prefer quick counters and sending blaster bolts back at the enemy with form five to get the fight over with quickly.

    • @dominiosss1474
      @dominiosss1474 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The main issue with Niman is that is heavily based on the user itself. The user of him or herself needs to be able to recognize situations and adapt their lightsaber style accordingly. That is why Niman usually has a bad rep, most people just learn it for its stereotypical 'jack of all trades' trait. Whereas the true purpose of Niman is to be flexible and adapt accordingly. That is why few practitioners of Niman have found success. A lot of it is based on experience and natural talent and awareness in anticipating your opponent's moves. Think about it, Niman is usually only useful if you can read your opponent well during combat. Since Niman users have studied every form, in theory, they should know the general sequences their opponent uses. However, situations on the battlefield change, unpredictable force power integration, uncommon maneuvers, and acrobatics are performed to apply pressure and confuse your opponent.
      Experience in real-life combat goes a long way for Niman. At least, that's what I think. Although, you do occasionally get the outrageous prodigy who can utilize the form to its epitome like Revan and Exar Kun. Niman shouldn't be a standard form that is instructed like in the Clone Wars era Jedi. It should be like how it was in the Old Republic. Something for Jedi Masters that have mastered their desire form to the highest level already. Niman has no purpose if your base fundamentals are crap, as you need to be good enough to fight whilst staying level headed and reading your opponent. If you can't even do that, then Niman is useless.

    I'm glad to see you giving some love to Kai Cen Darach. Honestly I love this character ever since the first cinematic of him ame out and I sensed there was more depth to him and your initial analysis of them I thought that you missed the diversity and the skill with which he fights but you got it in this one definitely. II honestly think in a straight up fight from the start he would have been Malgus in Bolq and I don't think it would have been that hard especially with Sora seeing as how he tends to turn off his brain the more angry he gets. I think this would have been recognised fairly early and brought to the point of exploitation even sooner by as skilled a tactician as Cen Darach. I believe that this is a character that you could write novels about his adventures before his end at Korriban and it would be very interesting.

    I would like to see MORE from you three (jensaarai, evannova95 and greyjedi91).
    I loved those lightsaber histories, theories, forms, q&a-s and stuff like that, or you could even spice up these theoretic battles - let people choose the setting of battle: timeline, arena, sides, support, main combatants etc via facebook polling or something like that. Don't get me wrong, I smile every time I see one of your videos uploaded but yet again if it's someone all ready done I watch 1/3 of a video knowing someones stats or 2/3 knowing the stats of both duelists, which sometimes isn't that bad. All in all you have a great thing going and I just wanna see it go for the best.
    Hope I didn't bore you out of reading all of this :) Apreciate your work and keep them coming. Oh yeah, all most forgot, a battle between general Grievous and Empatajayos Brand crossed my mind while whatching this video, don't know if it's a good idea but anyway... peace.

    I just assumed that Niman to be the form used by jedi sages by default in SWTOR.
    Its a non specialised style which was designed to be open to plentiful force power usage favored by diplomats/negotiators. Given the consular's story-line having a large diplomacy focus and the sages almost complete reliance on force powers it would make sense.

    1) First thank you so much for giving Form VI its due. I am so fed up of people disrespecting and dismissing it out of hand.
    2) One thing I find interesting about Sora's "kark it! I'll just kill everyone" decision was that it happened after his own former apprentice, Mira, was killed. I'm wondering if her death may have catalyzed his fall as prior to that he was still able to pass himself off as the typical serene Jedi Master.

    the thing i like the most about those videos is that styles DO make fights. As a huge MMA fan I love when someone tries to deduce the winner from tactics and strategies instead of pure feats, amazing work.
    That being said, is there a Jedi or Sith that you find particulary the best in terms of fighting style? Someone that is almost flawless?

      ***** very interesting opnion. I do agree with most of it, I do believe the Rock, paper scissor mentality is the most correct,but I do believe sometimes despite all odds the rock will put a hole through paper and the scissor will cut the rock. Vader is my favorite fighter also, but I do believe the most complete and overwhelming fighter would be his son Luke Skywalker, because although he lacks the sophistication of his father, the guy is simply amazing at everything, I admire your work a lot, together with the Evannova , Greywolf and Antoinne, you guys do an amazing star wars work, I think I will ask for those 3 the same question I just did just to enjoy the answer

    "The red hue syth-crystals produced more powerful blades, but at the cost of maneuverability and stability." Has there ever been one instance outside of rpg stats that this has ever mattered or been displayed?

    • @Darthpsychonis
      @Darthpsychonis 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      ***** Interesting. However this seems like one of those more obscure things in the lore that I have to question. Exactly how are Sith style red blades harder to "maneuver" since from what I understand the blades are weightless. How are the they more powerful and unstable, and in what regard? Has there ever been one instance in the lore that red blades could cut something at lest more easily than normal Jedi sabers or if Sith sabers have ever once been shown to randomly malfunction due to being more unstable? Sure it would make since in role playing games were such small details would matter which was why I brought it up, but in the actual lore if they never really demonstrate this I really don't see how it is even relevant. I'm not really questioning yourself specifically on this, just concepts themselves.

      Psychonis i'm not the biggest fan of starwars but from time to time i do read random wikia's when i'm bored; i don't know how they were harder to handle, (maybe because the blade plays tricks on your eyes?), but there have been instances, (exceedingly few) where in a lightsaber fight the red short circuited the opponent, but it wasn't much of an issue unless you kept the two blades continuously crossed agains the other for a long while

    • @Darthpsychonis
      @Darthpsychonis 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Psychonis Qordis states that red are significantly more powerful in "Darth Bane A Path of Destruction", i can't find an example where it actually happens though, sorry, as for the "playing tricks on the eyes" bit i mentioned, that was my theory entirely.

    • @Darthpsychonis
      @Darthpsychonis 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pablo Rius Yeah, that' basically highlights most my issue with it. It seems like something in the lore which is just "there" and really serves no purpose and is never utilized.

    I'm not trying to start a flame war or what not but arent the books now invalid? I know when Star Wars was transferred to Disney they classified literature in terms of the games as noncanon but my question is what of the random books?

    • @AntoineBandele
      @AntoineBandele 10 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Disney shifted EVERYTHING, aside from the Movies, their novelizations and the Clone Wars series as canon. Everything else is marked as "Legends" in the eyes of Disney. Everything going forward will go through the Story Group. The first thing that is being added to the main canon is the Son of Dathomir comic books series which was supposed to be a part of the sixth season of the Clone Wars series.
      After that they are releasing these books in the "main canon":

      So the Clone Wars Cartoon Network stuff (albiet lovely to some, ungodly to others) is canon? Just checking because if that's the case... TECHNICALLY Republic Commandos are canon because I recall "Boss" making a minor appearance. Anyways thanks for the info, didn't want to ask Reddit because well... it's fucking reddit. Hopefully the writers took notes on what the original set of authors did in terms of forging decent lore.

      darkshadowssonic Niman is good but for me I don't care for it's lack of focused Blade training, if I was a Jedi I would be a Jedi Guardian and would focus greatly upon my sword play. So I would study it but my main style would be either Djem So, or Shien.

      +Josh Campbell Djem So/Shien master race. But Niman is a pretty good style because it versatility and is about improvising instead of a normal combat sequence. But my style would consists of mastery of Djem So as the back bone of my style,shien for usage and training of reverse grip and blaster deflection. Then Niman to make up the weaknesses my previous styles and helps chain force abilities.

    • @jailbirb1515

      I personally would use a Juyo combo. If you pay attention to a of Jensaarai's videos, you know Juyo is only used when a person has training in all forms, and specializing in two to even six styles of combat. With that said, no style is the same with Juyo, so I'd use a Makashi/Ataru/Shien mix, becoming basically a jack of all trades.

    • @crazyscotsman9327
      @crazyscotsman9327 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Spectre the Espeon That would be a difficult combination to master, as Juyo, is so randomized and Makashi is so focused and precise but if it came together it would be devastating.

In both of the death blows given to Darach and Ven Zallow, the blows fell below the ribcage, where the lightsaber-resistant plates are NOTICABLY ABSENT.

    Hey Jensaarai you seem to know a fair about actual historical fencing references, such as the german, italian, french, english schools of swordsmanship and etc.
    At some point maybe you should make a video contrasting the similarities and inspirations the light-saber forms took from some of these schools.
    For instance I think Fechten has similarities with Juyo and Mikashi with a bit of Djem-So and Niman.
    And Kenjutsu has a lot in common with Djem-So, Makashi, and a bit of Soresu.
    Just a thought.

      it depends on how you fight. I guess. Like jedi guardians usually use lightsabers and consulars usually focus on force usage.
