      Love what you do. Thank you for it! I have a D750 and the new 70-200. I went to Conowingo Dam to shoot the eagles and got some good shots. For most wildlife pictures, I shoot in the woods or jungle of Costa Rica. There is usually not a ton of light. I do not want to carry a bazooka around with me. So, what if I got a D850 and a used 300mm f/2.8 vr2 G- ED? I could shoot in DX crop or crop in LR. Does the 300mm f/2.8 stand up to the pixels in an 850? Would a D500 be a better match? Do you think Nikon will update the 300mm 2.8 sometime soon? Thanks again!

    I have been using a Mogopod with a Manfrotto quick release head (with tilt) with the Nikon 200-500. With the lens mounted at the balance point, the setup can be swept up/down and panned easily.. The single collar height adjust on the Mogopod makes for quick setup.

    I think the Canon looked consistently sharper, but that is probable because Tony holds the camera and lens steadier than Chelsea. Should have switches systems to give both a fair chance.

      I would have done both a hand-held test and a tripod-mounted test, as to rule that out and also since most of the time one would use some kind of support with these setups. If VR and shutter speed are fast enough then ok, but for purely objective testing I would have used a tripod. I'm assuming they are shooting the same ISO and shutter speed and aperture, and RAW or?

    Really good video. The Canon 500mm seems like an incredible value. Surprisingly good adapted focus on a7riii. I would love to know how you found adapting with the Canon 70-200 2.8 is ii. I've seen videos with the eye af and the Canon 85 1.2 ii working really well on the a7riii but the 70-200 2.8 is version ii didn't look as good. I'd like to try it myself but it's difficult to find a camera store with an a7riii in stock with an adapter to sample. I've been watching your videos since early 2009 and value your objective opinion.

    Tony as D850 AND 5DSR BOTH ARE very high megapixel camera whether TC 1.4 really necessary vs just simple digital crop? I use d850 + old Nikon 400mm f2.8G and I found bare lens crop is better than 1.4 but yes 2x sometime worth it due to better background blur

    Tony/Chelsea: Would you all consider using a super zoom camera in a comparison like this? The Sony RX10 Mark IV seems worth mentioning given the compact size for travel, but I'm not sure about the image quality compared to the Canon 5DSR and Nikon D850 outfitted with 600mm F4 lenses.

    Happy New Year!
    Enjoyed that, thanks.
    I would say the 1Dx2 shoots very good 4k and the 5Dsr video is actually surprisingly good if you use the Neutral profile and grade it (or even a log profile in a custom slot). (It's not sharpened as much in-camera but the detail is good for FHD and the moire performance amazing, it's certainly better than my GH4, in FHD that is, GH4 4k downscaled is better.)
    A request - if there isn't one already a video on extenders would be interesting. Especially how much do you get vs straight enlargement (and how much less of an improvement is a 2x vs 1.4x+scaling than 1.4x vs nothing+scaling), also how much worse vs. a longer lens. P.S. you can stack the Canon 1.4x and 2x if you're careful, but just do it for fun (I've done it with the mk IIs to see what it did for the Moon, plus stacking to help out the resolution).

    I like going out hiking a lot and I want to be able to carry a camera and lenses for video and wildlife photography on my hikes. But seeing how cumbersome those lenses are on a full-frame camera is a more assuring reason I want to commit to getting Panasonic M4/3 camera and lenses.

    • @mayanalien
      @mayanalien 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That alone is the reason I bought into m4/3. I use a biker hydropack where I carry my camera and lens and water when I hike. It frees up my hands so I can rock climb and get those really hard shots. Worth the sacrifice of m4/3 sensors and stuff

    • @klackon1
      @klackon1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      JustSimplyBrandon. I walk up to 15 miles/7 hours a day. My Canon kit meant that I could hardly get out of my chair after a days shooting, so I sold it all. I shoot wildlife almost exclusively and use the following kit now: Olympus EM1 mark II + Oly 300mm f4 (FF equivalent is 600mm) + Oly 1.4 TC (FF equiv. 840mm) + 12 - 100mm f4. I also own a Nikon D500 + Nikkor 300mm f4 PF VR + Nikkor TC14EIII (this set up weighs less than the EM1.2 + 300mm f4). I can carry these two systems for the same distance/time but can mow the grass etc., when I arrive home now. I also own a Nikkor 200 - 500mm f5.6 and Sigma 180mm f2.8 OS macro. When I take these out with my D500 I tend to cut distance and time down to about 4 miles/4 hours or less - depending on what Olympus kit I have with me at the time. The EM1 mark II is a marvellous wildlife camera, in many ways better than the D500: and the lenses are superb.

      For ages I shot with a 7DMKII and a 5DSR but found that, in the UK at least, when I wanted to shoot birds (raptors/owls are my main "thing") the low-light performance was not to par. So I sold both and god a 1DX MKII. It rocks and I really enjoy shooting with it, the quality is all there. So is the weight mind...

    I am curious about that Sony body - Canon lens combo :) is the A9 better with those long lenses in terms of AF? Can you test that out. It is much faster after all and second thing :) the A7r3 is ok as AF but I am curious which version of the firmware was in that body when you tried it. I wonder is the 1.01 update actually ruining the AF because a few friends of mine were complaining about the AF with Canon lenses but my body with its v1.00 firmware is working well...

    I wonder how the 200-500 and 600mm primes compare to something "affordable" like the Sigma 150-600mm C (which I got in perfect condition for $700 CAD). I find it tracks birds in flight easily for 10+ sec and can get great images if you have enough light, but I've never tested it against something costing 10x more.

    • @AndrewCCM
      @AndrewCCM 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Daniel Draghici I had the Tamron 150-600 and it now sits in the box after I went 100-400L Ver 2... IQ difference and focus speed was just that significant to me. I also use a 400 F2.8 v2 + extenders and much prefer the results over the 150-600. Not to say I don’t like the Tamron, I just get better and significantly more keepers using the Canon’s....albeit, with a price...

    • @iSOBigD
      @iSOBigD 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Makes sense about the prime but we're talking huge price difference and f2.8 which I can't even get close to with the lens. I also went with the Sigma because I saw enough comparisons where the Tamron couldn't match it. I think one day I'll have to test my Sigma against a prime because honestly I can't say I have issues tracking any birds, and I've rarely shot slow, large ones. The f stop and increased sharpness would be cool though!

    • @AndrewCCM
      @AndrewCCM 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Daniel Draghici I shot my Tamron next to my friend that has the Sigma.. Pretty similar results I gotta admit. I did like the Sigma build quality better however. They’re excellent lenses for the money no doubt.

      The Tamron/Sigma are good in open space (good light), but if you go to the rainforest it's a nightmare. A lot of miss focus or soft img. After 1-2 years with tamron 150-600 i changed to canon 400mm f5.6 (better even without the IS). If you hv the money go for the 100-400mm II

    • @qnetx
      @qnetx 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have the Sigma 150-600 C and also the Nikon 300mm f/2.8 that I use the Nikon 1.7x and 2.0x teleconverters with on a D500. They compare well at the 600mm setup. But I find the 300mm Nikkor focuses faster at the equivalent Sigma 300mm and seems to be crisper in contrast. I usually take the big tripod for the Nikon 300mm while I reserve the Sigma for light walks and exploring new paths. The Sigma is definitely worth the price for the value I get out of it.

    Would be interesting to compare these with an OMD with the 300mm f4

      I think the OMD with the 300mm f4 is much sharper.

      I am not so sure, if you need to crop the FF at 600mm then you are going to need to crop the Oly at 300mm. The Olympus may be a little short of pixels for a decent crop. I know which I would prefer to carry around all day though.

    What’s your thoughts on a 400 f5.6 for someone looking to video wildlife. Took my C100 out in the woods last summer by my longest focal range of 250 wasn’t even close when wanting to shoot animals. Thoughts?

    Would've been interesting to see the Sony A99 Mark 2 with the Sony SAL500F40G (500mm f4) in this comparison (not a 600 f4. but as i know they do not make a lens this long).

    Would you consider Canon 800mm? Or Sigma 800mm on Sony body for it has no OS.

    Your videos are great! I'm not looking for a new camera but last night (10-15-20) I found the Canon 5Ds for $1299.99 @ B&H, a new camera not a used or refurbished body and I'm very tempted. I'd prefer the D850, since I use Canon and Nikon bodies but for the price it does everything I need it to do.

    If you're trying to extract the most detail possible using 600mm lenses for wildlife, you should be using a sturdy tripod with a gimbal head. Or some similar type of support.
