    Brilliant show again guys.
    I'm a nikon shooter and shot with various Nikons and have to say the Nikon D850 is a winner for me. 😜

  •  3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Great video !!!. I downloaded the 2 files.
    a) The first thing I noticed is that the Nikon one has a little bit more light (+ 0.4 exposition in C1) although it was shot at 1/100 (Canon was shot at 1/80).
    b) I see more detail on the Nikon, I selected 3 points:
    1) The wall at the left of the big boat ( white/blue/rusty one)
    2) The surrounding area at the light blue car (between the two houses (again the walls, the red window and the bars ))
    3) The church tower (look at the bell, I see it with more detail again in the Nikon one)
    c) I can see more purple halo at the bars in the Nikon file (Rosedale hotel bars)
    d) I used Capture One to analyze the 2 files using zoom from 100% to 400% (When you reach 400% you can notice the difference of those 5MPX that has the Canon)
    There is no doubt the two cameras are incredibly great and for the usual pictures on most situations I would pick either the D850 or the 5Dsr with no difference for excellent results.
    Thanks for your effort of making this great content, best regards from Argentina !!!

    Just picked up a used 5ds for b cam at half the price of my worst lens. It is fantastic. I loved my Nikon but these days if the shooter knows their glass and exposure then the results will be perfect from pretty much any camera since 2015. 50mp gives maximum flexibility in raw. I shoot between f5.6 f11 in my work anyway…. Both cams win even in 2023.

    Cool to see a video like this one this long after both cameras have been released! I own a 5DsR and personally mostly use it with Zeiss Milvus lenses - a very good match, those Milvuses blow most Canon L optics (except the very long lenses that are still king in their category) out of the water when it comes to both sharpness and other optical parameters (their drawback is no autofocus, though). I still shoot the 5DsR and any upgrade from there would be going into the medium format land (e.g. GFX). A significant drawback of the 5DsR compared to D850 is the signal-to-noise ratio. As is quite visible on the images in the video, the D850 has far less noise in the shadowy parts of the images. That is something I need to do bracketing and exposure stacking to compensate for - and it is not always an option for moving subjects.

    Just downloaded and reviewed both images provided and for me it was obvious right away that the Canon image was sharper. But, I've never heard any 5D shooter OR D850 shooter be convinced their model wasn't the best. Great show again guys, thanks for providing the content. Cheers!

    Stepping up from a Canon 70D when I started I then purchased the 5DSR and haven't looked back. The detail in the 5DSR is incredible and being a 6 year old FF camera still blows away almost everything else. Most comparisons of the 5DSR compare the video, FPS etc when it clearly is a stills camera. Excellent comparison without highlighting bells and whistles. I of course favor the 5DSR in this test. Also using Canon L lenses really makes the 5DSR shine.

      Thanks for your input Michael. You might find that some of Sigma’s Art lenses are noticeably sharper than most of the Canon L lenses, do well worth trying out.

There is a lot of good information in the videos and I also like the locations you chose for the imageries. Yes keep the show alive and do make more of it. I downloaded both files and I like the Nikon file, it is more vibrant and it is easier to pull the shadows w/out loss of details. I noticed that the Canon is alright except noise pixels do pop up in the shadows more and I had to raise a bit the light overall. Cheers.

    My only question on the Canon 5Dsr vs Nikon D850 segment is why wasn’t the focus peaking wasn’t turned off on the Nikon as it doesn’t seem an entirely accurate or fair comparison fully manually focusing one lens on a camera you are used to and letting the focus peaking of the Nikon decide what’s sharp for you on the other when you already stated that you don’t trust focus peaking.

    • @PhotographyOnline
      @PhotographyOnline  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Toby. If you watch the feature properly then you will see that that part of the image I use to focus (the green text) has no focus peaking. So turning it off wouldn’t have made any difference. Are you suggesting that the Nikon image is not properly focused? (Marcus)

    • @Toby_C
      @Toby_C 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wasn’t suggesting it was not properly focused just that the exact same focusing technique wasn’t used to make the comparison as close to 100% equal as possible. It’s more me nit picking as both images would look great at a normal viewing distance.

  • @daveconlin669
    @daveconlin669 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Great demonstration on the large format camera, very interesting. On the Canon vs Nikon, I loaded them into DXO PhotoLab 4 using default settings but with the auto exposure adjustment (smart lighting) turned off. I couldn't see any practical difference between the two as far as sharpness and detail was concerned except for the obvious due to the Canon having slightly more pixels. The difference in exposure though is very clear with the Canon darker (with more contrast) than the Nikon, which may explain your finding on the Canon apparently providing better sharpness in low contrast areas. Choosing the most pleasing, at least on my monitor, I would go with the Nikon (I would, I am a Nikon shooter).

    As usual, an excellent show that I really enjoyed. I got started in photography in the late '60s, and in the early 70s was well into Large Format and The Zone system. Your Analogue Affairs brought back so many good memories. Your King of Cameras validates what I was teaching in photography in the late 70s thru 2011, the differences in the camera brands and models is more about how a particular camera feels and operates in the photographers hands and eye than the name that is written on the front. Equal model grade to each brand will have comparable results. Sure, one will always be better in some miniscule way, but seeing it in the final image may be extremely hard to see. Excellent comparisons.

    The Nikon image is a more "digital" rendition slightly over sharppend. In darker areas with lots of erratic details the Nikon seems to show more detail. In lighter areas with same details, the canon seems to define them better. In plane white areas, the canon due to its better white balance gives a more realistic impression and details are better reflected (White House) Yet the Nikon handles moire much better as you can see from the roof above the blue window. The canon does bad there. There is some fringing in the water too. The Nikon does better there. But the main thing is the overall colour and general rendition. The more digital image of the Nikon tends to saturate and sometimes change colours. The canon is more loyal to the real thing and has some slight weaknesses like those mentioned. It's funny noting that Nikon's details that seem better defined can lose that edge when viewing at 200% or more. That means there is oversharpening. I think both cameras are great, the Canon is the better sensor, but it's more likely to obtain a better image from the Nikon if you are not too orthodox in the setting. So most of the times in real life you might get better images with the Nikon. But if you post process pretty accurately and take the time for the shot the canon is better. It's just a more manual thing. I've owned and love both.

    Could you please drop the analogue/film photography topic? And also DSLR gear review. Those cameras are (almost) discontinued by the major manufacturers.
    Don't want to see this wonderful show to get discontinued.

    • @PhotographyOnline
      @PhotographyOnline  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry RawSashi, but film photography is really popular right now so we’ll be doing more of it in the future. You shouldn’t dismiss it, as it is where all the fundamental skills of photography are found. Just because we do a feature wit a film camera doesn’t mean to say that digital shooters can’t learn or apply the same principles. As for the DSLRs - while they may have been “almost discontinued”, they still beat anything new, which is the whole purpose of this feature - to bring awareness that newer is not always better. Hope that makes sense.

    • @rawsashi
      @rawsashi 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PhotographyOnline Thank you for the reply. I'm not dismissing film and I can understand the fun behind it. To include it in every show, I think the popularity is overestimated! The fundamentals on photography are exposure and composition. Where exposure requires the technical and composition creative skills.
      You can certainly learn/explain this by putting a blanket over your head behind an apparatus like the one in this episode as well as on any semi professional digital camera.
      No offense, just trying to give a constructive feedback. Looking forward for part 2 of your show.

    Yet another great episode from the team and well done to Marcus for the great content. After reviewing both images at home I found the 5Dsr is the clear winner in the low contrast areas and both cameras are so close in the high contrast areas., but in the end after viewing the registration plates of the 4 parked cars on the right hand side of the image at 200% I would have to give the crown to the 5Dsr. Not bad for a camera that is 2 years older than the D850.

  • @257squadron
    @257squadron 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    What a brilliant episode. Ticked many boxes for me. Would love to get back into large format. One word of warning though. If you are new to the hobby or don't have deep pockets, do not be put off by the pixel peeping comparison of the Canon and Nikon beasts. Yep, they are amazing bits of kit but you can buy consumer models at far more affordable prices and still take amazing photographs. Like wise, there are film cameras floating around on auction sites which will cost you pennies in comparison and still perform well. I used to know a guy who was a target shooter. Every week he would turn up to the club and produce a new Gucci rifle. Cost him a fortune. However he still couldn't hit a barn door. The only good thing was he became a great source of nearly new kit! So my challenge to you lovely Photography Online people is to do an episode where you all have a set budget to buy a digital or film camera from Ebay or similar and battle it out with these cameras. I reckon you could get a Canon EOS 600 series analog camera and a lens for well under £100 for instance, or a Nikon D80 and a lens for under £200. What do you think?

      Hi Edgar. This was intentional as to centralise the building made it too claustrophobic on the 90mm lens, but when I used a shorter focal length there was too much foreground. I couldn’t move forwards or backwards due the wheel, so I decided to exclude the left side of the building to get the correct balance between the wheel and the house. Hope that helps. Hi Team: Another great eposide! I am sorry I couldn't join you life for the premier. I particularly liked the segment on the Dereliction Photos. As far as the King of the Camera competition goes, I took a slightly different approach and brought the images into Capture One Pro 2021. Like Marcus said, both images performed very well, but I think that the Canon image was very so slightly better when it came to overall exposure. The Nikon image appeared to be slightly over-exposed, but only a touch. As a former Nikon D810 user I love the images that Nikon camera can produce. Let the competition continue! I zoomed 100% and then 200 & 300 and there was a noticeable difference right away. Without a doubt there was more detail in the Canon file. The words on the signs were crisper and also the detail of the stone work on the white building on the right of the image. In my view your Canon 5D SR is still king.

    Two tips on large format. 1. You should always turn your dark slide around after an exposure. One side of the very top is white and one side is black. That way you will know if there is exposed film on that side of the holder. Many people will disagree as to what color should be used for exposed. Black or white. I personally use white and literally have the word ‘exposed’ written on all my slides on the white side. Never a chance of double exposing that way. There are also little bumps on one side to help you when loading in the dark bag. 2. You should not have to use a cable lock to keep the shutter open. Most all modern shutters have a lever that is used to open the shutter. You simply move it one way for composing and the other to shut it back down. Peace and enjoy!

    Had a look at both RAW files and it's too close to call. The Canon did seem marginally sharper but maybe at the expense of slightly more noise. As the Nikon has a lower base ISO than shown it probably just has the edge as the better camera. However, it mostly depends on what lenses someone has stockpiled as to which one they'd go for.

    I looked at the two raw photos in two different programs Photoshop and Capture One. On both, I came to the same conclusion.
    I did not focus on the detail of the letters, in general, I put my attention on the three-dimensional effect that the Nikon d850 produces in the vegetation compared to the Canon that in my opinion, is flatter and lacks in richness between the foreground and the background.

    The Scheimpflug principle: Moving the angle of the focal plane relative to the film plane, and therefore the circles of confusion AKA depth of field. I used a Wista 5x4 with a Schneider-Kreuznach Super-Angulon 90mm lens for many years and look back with much nostalgia; it taught me so well about exposure, light and tonal range that I suspect few understand these days . I used Kodak Tri-X with 12 loaded dark slides (a full days shoot!) - I had my own darkroom: The quality and tonal range is very different from digital and although the two are often compared you really can't until you experience the large format analogue process. I often wax lyrical about those days and imagine selling all my digital gear and going back; ha ha ha...

    A few comments regarding the Canon vs Nikon shootout. I’d have preferred to see the focus peaking turned off on the D850. Not sure if you compared the ISO64 native D850 image which I believe would have been fair - the Canon has more pixels, the Nikon a lower base ISO. And finally, why do people use self timer on a tripod to eliminate shake? Self timer eliminates shake from human intervention but flips the mirror just before exposure. Delay mode flips the mirror first and then exposes after the delay eliminating human and mirror induced shake. Probably makes only a tiny difference but in this test you were looking for tiny differences.

    • @PhotographyOnline
      @PhotographyOnline  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi George. Thanks for your input. Turning off focus peaking wouldn’t have made any difference as the area used to manually focus (green text) was of low contrast and therefore had no peaking applied. We shot the Nikon at both ISO64 and 100 but it made no difference whatsoever to the detail so we did t bother showing two identical shots. With regards to the self timer - both cameras were in Live View at the time, so obviously there is no mirror movement. Hope this answers your questions. All the best.

    Nice to see the wooden Large format adjustments! When checking focus with your loupe, is it possible to see focus on dark areas at f5.6? Nice to see honestly on the D850 comparison, although more sharpness would have resulted from the mirror up mode or the 3 sec exposure delay mode. I would also rate your eyesight zoomed in, above the focus peaking...ie switch that off. I would expect both a Sony A7R4 and a Z7ii with 50mm lenses to be sharper than two tested today.
