Welcome to June 2024 - Just picked one up used on eBay for $1,100 USD. Full kit, original box and materials, a few additional bits and bobs. Shutter count 55K. A few trivial scratches on the body. I've got the 5DMIV as my primary day to day work horse and some Canon L glass, which turn out lovely images, as well as some Zeiss primes that are just gorgeous. I shoot mostly landscape and portraits, so low-light performance, low ISO ceiling, crawling fps, etc. don't really bother me. And I shoot to print in large format, so the resolution really matters. As Easton alluded to, this is very particular camera body intended for a narrow audience.
I appreciate the very thoughtful and details analysis - including the frank honesty of the presenter. I don't do car photography, but, holy smokes..., that portfolio is stunning. Gorgeous work!
    Cheers,
    J

Nice review. Today (2024) I still use the 5Ds R. I purchased a refurbished (new) camera from Canon directly, and so far have had years of good use. I am angry that other manufacturers have made better options, including mirrorless. In summary, it's poor in low light situations (stage performances, etc.), and it takes a lot more work to get great pictures. But when all parameters line up correctly, you can still get great images. In general, high megapixels seems to mean poor low light sensitivity. Today, if you can get a good deal on a healthy 5Ds(R), and you have good quality lenses, and you don't want to switch to Nikon, Sony, etc., then I think you can get some good use out of this camera. Unfortunately, today's photographers have switched to quiet mirrorless cameras, so the shutter noise can be annoying in comparison. I still think Canon is not on the forefront of innovation.

While I have picked up the R6 and probably the R5 in the near future, I wouldn't think of letting my 5DsR go. The image quality, can not be beat. The features of the newer mirror are fun and extremely handy and with an adapter, the older glass is adaptable. We grow and go forward, but we ought to think twice before we completely let go of the already tried and true. As with the author Easton has indicated, I too have been shooting my 5DsR for 5 years as well. An idea he has brought to mind, why not by a second one (at the new ridiculously) low price.

They (spearheaded by the big TH-cam channels like TOny and Chelsey and the rest) criticized this camera big time. Then, as always, we learned that true professionals actually have been using them and loving them. They wanted Canon to be amused by cock-pitting SOny and Canon - but sorry, but Canon doesn't play anybody's game. They have their own game. And they have the last laugh.

I was using a Canon 80d which is a good camera, with a nice dynamic range, touchscreen etc. I wanted to update to full-frame...I liked the canon 5d mark iv but the body was 2000 dollars.
So...I saw the canon 5ds in 1249 and I just bought it together with a 24-70 lens. I can not be happier. The quality of the photos compared with the 80 d is just ANOTHER world.
Even in 6400 iso is A LOT better than the canon 80d. And I can say, i am super in love with the 50 mg because the capability of cropping is a HUGE HUGE advantage
I took photos for stock and book covers and I can take any part of the scene and still have a super high-quality photo. For me, that flexibility is incredibly useful. And I also use bracketing for extreme contrast situations so it is no problem with some lack of dynamic range. Of course, you can have better cameras, but you have to pay really a lot more.
If you want to upgrade from crop sensor, this camera is incredible, the quality and color rendition is really amazing. I don't have any more touchscreen nor wifi and not articulated screen like on my canon 80D... who cares? at the end, which is a matter...is the quality of the photo. I don't miss those features AT ALL.
With the 700 dollars, I saved for not buying the canon 5d mark iv I bought a good glass. I just want to share m experience after two months of using my Canon 5DS.
And many thanks to you Mr Easton, you open my mind to make the best choice. I wish you all the best.

To guys watching it in 2024, i just bought this camera, to switch from canon 90d aps-c, why? Portrait, landscapes, street photography- for my only quality matters, i don't use any inteligent autofocus system, sticking to center dot focus 99% time. Why i switched? I genuinly believe that some day i will hit a photo that really matters to me, that somewhow could land on fine art photography and i believe this camera gives me the quality that I won't think about my equipment anymore, just focus on some day i do a photo that is worth 50 megapixels or even more. Now it costs about 1k dollars used, has EF mount compatible to amazing line of lens which are getting cheap used, i think that this year is the best to buy this camera

@@unbroken1010 I like it, a lot really. I bought it mostly for long exposure landscape work and in that respect it’s excellent, especially for $1,500. I especially like how I can lock the mirror and delay the exposure by 2 seconds after pressing the shutter. This eliminates any shake in the body resulting from pressing the shutter button.
It’s low-light performance is a bit noisy, though. However, if you set the raw file to 24mpx s-raw instead of 50mpx the reduction eliminates most noise and still yields a pretty substantial file.
Anyway, I like it so much I sold my 6D and am relying on the 5DsR as my only DSLR.

First off, I appreciate your breakdown of the 'value' of the 5Ds. I expected a more technical review, but your observations are very helpful in my decision making processes. The reason I am researching the 5Ds is that B&H announced a huge drop in price for this model in October. Currently advertised the 5Ds is 1299 USD with a 2400 USD "instant rebate". Canon must have figured out the 5Ds/r will not sell for their previous asking prices and as you mentioned in your video, the Sony A7R iii is a more than qualified equal to the 5Ds and is currently selling for around 2300 USD on Adorama.
Currently I own a 6D M2, but have wanted a more capable body for long landscape exposures in low light. I have lusted after the 5d IV for it's premium optical quality and modern features such as touch screen (which I really like), but the price seems stuck at 2499 USD. The 5Ds has a pathic max of 6400 ISO and of course no touch screen. It will be a tough decision.

And I like cameras that are different and perhaps even 'flawed' in some way. Image quality, ergonomics, esthetics, character are properties that override more sensible decisions over and over again in our daily lives. Whatever makes sense doesn't make it a more appealing option all of its own. Isn't that also why you still got it too, in the end?

This was very insightful. It just made me think, if you end up having to throw away half the 50 megapixel photos because the camera missing the shot, what good is 50 megapixels on this camera? Having one of the faster camera's seem's to be better for the sake of having more usable product to work with as a photographer. eg. you take 500 photos and only 85 are usable photos on the slower camera shutter, and you take 500 photos and 450 are usable on the faster camera shutter. It makes a difference in the quality of the work you can show and not having to throw away those photo's you really wanted to nail for the client.

In a lot of ways the 5DsR is going backwards from the 5D4. The only area the 5DsR is better is resolution. Can you quantify how important that is to you? 30MP resolution is no slouch. Unless you really do need that extra res, the best choice is to save that $1500 and still use the mark 4.

Hi ?Easton, I've never come across you before, I was just looking around to see what's up with second/hand canon stuff. I have a 7D, AND 7D MkII, love both of these cameras, They do what I want them to do, and they work fantastic for my needs. Wildlife, Landscape etc. When I come across the 5DsR and you started talking about it, I agree with you about the BullShit price that Camera Stores are pricing them at. WAY, WAY, WAY too much for a 6 and nearly 7 year old camera. (Me - Australia in 10/21). Hearing you talk with so much experience with the model I'm looking at, and you gave a no BS advice and comparison to other models. THANK YOU, for having the balls to actually tell it like it is. I suppose I'm a NO mirrorless camera bloke as if sold all my gear, maybe 3-4 grand aus, it's NOT worth me doing so. But,,, If I could get a decent re-fund or so on my gear to get a 5DSR I'd get one and i'm sure I'd be tickled pink to have it. I do like the 50meg size, plus full frame, plus my lenses I have will fit the 5DSR, so all round, I'd be more than happy. I'm just really thankful that I was able to come across your 12th old video giving some dam good advice from a bloke that has actually made a living and lifestyle from the actual model camera I want. BLOODY THANKS for your sharing here, I hope to get to your site and have a look at your pics and know that they are what I could eventually have from my own (eventually) 5DSR camera. Thanks again, Teddy, :)

Useful video thank you. Landscape shooter here, trying to decide what to upgrade to from my failing Canon 5D2. The R5 and R6 are both calling, but with one serious eye on budget, the 5DS brand new for around £1.1k is a tempting proposition.

Bought the gray market 5DSR 1 year ago for $1800 USD and it is brand new with no issues. Did a full shutter count and pixel test and there were no bad pixels and shutter count was about 25 which is normal for Canon testing. Had to set movie from PAL to NTSC but that was it. Excellent camera and almost everything I shoot is landscape so buffer speed is a non issue. In addition Amazon has 2 year warranty you can buy that is easily as good or better than Canon's warranty. I shoot in live view so in essence it is mirrorless when shooting.

Purchased 5Ds New £880 and a 5DsR New £1080 for shooting DPS uk magazines in July 2020 and amazing kit after 1DsIII / 5DIII / 5DIV / EOSR, the latter I kept for gimble filming alongside C300MKII. I tested the 5DsR and 5Ds against the EOSR and it still blew the EOSR out of the park pulling back shadows. For 'Now' cost they are amazing and doubt I will be moving from them until the R5 is £3k ish and the issues are resolved. If I am honest I have always changed camera near the end of the incoming cameras lifetime as the firmware is at its prime and the niggles are sorted out. Look at the R5 8k heat issue? I mean still today almost all of my none broadcast clients want 1080p and yes shooting 1080p from a 4k sensor is amazing. Nice film and its now my official bedtime sleepy listen thank you.

A really interesting vlog. If I were a proffesional photographer I would most certainly have upgraded the "tools of my trade" over the years because that's how I would be earning my living but as a keen hoybist photographer, it's a very different story. My two main cameras are still DSLRs, a Canon 5Ds and when I need speed, a 7D MkII but of course along with these goes the patiently built up collection of L series lenses. As a lightweight "carry option" I have a mirrorless system built around Canon's M series and from that, know the many advantages of mirrorless especially if you want to do video work however, would a brand new camera make me a better photographer ?
I suspect not though buying into the R series or Sony/Nikon/Panasonic would certainly make me poorer so for now I will stick with my 'old DSLRs' and just think about all those hand me down EF lenses that just might come my way at affordable prices :)

This camera is currently around $1000, but I think the Nikon D810 would be a better buy if I want a high-res camera.
Stocks don't like noisy megapixels, but I like high-contrast scenes and low-key photos with a lot of shadows, so the real resolution of the photos that stock won't reject will be determined by the dynamic range. You can't fool these guys with noise reduction, only downsizing hides noise.
A perfectly OK camera if you shoot something flat bright and keep everything in the right half of the histogram, but I like shadows.

    • @dima1353
      @dima1353 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

The image quality is not fantastic. This sensor is very similar to the 7D Mark II sensor, and that sensor was not much better than the previous 18 megapixel sensor. So theoretically they could have released a high-resolution camera with about the same image quality back in 2009 or 2010 If they just scaled the sensor from 7D. I think they waited because they knew that their technology is not yet up to the task of supporting such a high resolution with sufficient quality so that the image does not fall apart. But eventualy they just gave up to just have something.
This camera is absolutely not impressive, zero innovation, just 2.5 sensors from 7D2, but without dual pixel in the body of a 5D3.
They could have tweaked something, maybe squeezed out a bit of dynamic range, maybe even made the native ISO less than 100, but they didn't do anything like that, they just worked with the mirror a little to make it softer.
This would have been a great camera if it had been based on 5D4 and D80 era technology, but it didn't happen.

The high retail price of the 5DSR may have to do with the amount of cameras sold. Perhaps they haven’t yet sold enough to have made their original investment back. The 5DIV has probably outsold the 5DSR, to where after making their desired profit point, Canon could trigger discounts and price adjustments.

I basically agree with you. I been shooting for 57 years, and I have noticed that the average person gets suckered in on HYPE ADVERTISING.. etc., 1st things first do you want Video Camera, or a High Quality Camera for Photography? Once they combined the Video into the DSLR, that to me became a doubled edge sword. I'm not a Video guy, if love freezing things in TIME. I love the creative that it takes to compose a Photograph rather than a SNAP SHOT! Consolidation of the Camera and a Video record is Economics! Pay more, and get less. Back in the day, we didn't become professional because we were on FACEBOOk, or BLOGGING, or TikTok! We have to produce Superior QUALITY Photo's! People now days say there professionals and they walk around sporting the $3800.00 camera in AUTO mode!!! :-)). Heck they can't even use a Light Meter, if they know what one is! So, chase those Newbies, I'll stick with my older Canons, Nikons HP3's, , Lucia, and Hasselblads .......... no AUTO here, you actually have to compose, create, a formate a Photograph. Video cameras, weren't very good return for the industry, so, a little forward thinking they incorporated the two.

I got the 5Ds instead of the 5Dsr primarily to avoid any moiré and it is still very sharp. Today you can get a 5Dsr for $1499 at B&H brand new - they have no 5Ds cameras left in stock. If I were a professional, I would get the R5 because it would be more versatile, flippy touch screen, better dynamic range, and no need to calibrate the lens to the body, just to name a few. If you do any video, I’d steer away from the 5DsR. It’s just too far behind the competition, even the A73. The benefit of the video capabilities in the Sony outweighs the benefit in resolution in the 5dsr for “most” shooters. You gotta decide that for yourself!

@@DamianDodd would you consider suitability of having two camera systems? For some (like me) this is more suited as I focus on shooting stills whilst an assistant operates a video camera. It's more efficient to have two separate cameras in my case. So I can run a GH5 or Pocket 4k alongside the Canon. But for many other shooters, having video and stills in one camera body is more useful, being able to switch back and forth with the one body and lens. The issue with me is that most of my shoots is about capturing a car doing stunt work, so I can't feasibly ask the client to "redo" something to get both stills and video. It makes sense for them to do the stunt once.. and I capture it on two cameras simultaneously to cover both needs. Hope this makes sense!

It depends how important full frame is to you, if you shoot very "general" photography, the 6D Mark II will be nice and light and easy to shoot with. The 5DsR is a slower, more methodical camera, but has outstanding resolution for big prints.

great video by the way! I looking for a camera for architectural photography, that I could also use with tilt-shift lenses, what would you recommend today ?

I honestly think the 5DsR is the perfect architectural camera. You don't need to shoot very fast, or have a substantial buffer. You just need sharpness and resolving power, which the 5DsR has in spades.

@@eastonchang Thanks very much for the fast answer. I am very thankful for your answer!! So is this camera definitely better than the 5D Mark IV? I would be very interested also in low light photographs. And what about the new mirrorless Canons like the R5? I am new to photographing. Before I have never owned such a camera. And when I first tried a Canon of my friend what I instantly noticed was that when I look through the viewfinder I don't see the different adjustments possible (light exposure etc.) So you don't actually see the final picture through the viewfinder and after some research, I found out that on the new mirrorless cameras you have that ability. And that would be an argument for a mirrorless. But honestly, I like the mechanical side of DSLR, and that I need to learn a craft in order to get a great picture. So in a kind of way I find the fact that you cannot see the final picture in the viewfinder intriguing. And for example what do I do when I take the 5DS R on holiday and don't want to have all pictures in 50 Mpx? Does it only use part of the sensor then or does it use the whole sensor and just downsizes the picture to a lower megapixel count. Because I want this camera to be my allround camera. To be durable. To use it for video also. I'm an Architecture Student by the way. I would be very grateful I you'd have time to answer. Best regards Dan!
