    I figured this time around why not compare Shimanos latest hero reel to reels past and present from the same brand. Instead of comparing to reels from others. Very interesting to see some very high end features not found in some of the other current high end reels. Found in the new K

    Thanks man good review , I own 2 New Curado K reels , used them all season Salmon fishing and had No issues whatsoever , no h20 inside reel , no sticking fine adjustment wheel although they're tight when you get the reel new , the manual says to drop some oil on it to help free it up. Also the new break system should get a few drops of oil every couple weeks , which will quiet it down ... You have to remember , this reel is made in Malaysia on an assembly line not in Japan were they have far better QC like the Calcutta and Metainium both cost 2 to 3 x the cost of the Curado K ... The Steez is Diawa' s highest end reel and is about the cost of 4 Curado K reels... so maybe comparison wise
    You shoulda used a reel in the same price
    range ... but for the money there is nothing that compares to the K
    For the money it's by far the best on the market ....

    S3D spool defines the machining process for the spool. The spool has uniform dimensions to the thickness of the material. In the past it was difficult to control due to how they are made and machined. It does provide better balance but it is minimal because as soon as you put line on a reel it will constantly be in a balanced/unbalanced situation during the cast. It's all about harmonics/vibration reduction. This is what the S3D spool gives you. Silent Tune is a different way to reduce vibration. If you have questions just ask on Tackle Tour in the Shimano forum and I will explain it in more detail.

      Yeah...I flip flopped the marketing jargon between the two....since i put out the vid I got it straight....I can't post on that shill site anymore.....the mods banned me... they deleted an entire thread posted by another long standing member......I spent some time posting a reply to it since it was an excellent tear down of the bantam mgl....and the shills deleted my post which was asking some follow up ??'s to the OP....I then questioned the censorship which i've seen many times on there ...which apparently they didn't like....so they banned me. Thanks Bantam...but you won't see me there. (hell bassresource banned me after I put out a favorite fishing video and someone else there discussed it...I wasn't even in the thread and only posted 5 times) The only forum you'll see me post on is StripersOnline...as I'm a global admin and help with the advertising.

Also would you please, show a take down and review on higher end lew’s reels like the hyper mag, I’m curious on your thoughts about how well it’s assembled and the quality of the parts. I actually have the hyper mag I could lend you for the review.

    Does Shimano change the gear ratio down (for the Curado) by making the main gear smaller, or by making the pinion larger? Doing either would work but I suspect the pinion is easier from a mfg perspective. Thanks.

    Mine finally arrived last week, just fished it today for a bit. First of all, as expected the Micro Module Gears are legit (which I know you disagree), but the reel is smooth beyond words. Is so smooth whereby it doesn't even feel like is engaged when you are cranking it. Other than that, surprisingly I didn't find it to be a superior caster in absolute distance as suggested in tests done by THE REEL TEST. The hole on the levelwind is extremely small which I believe makes a huge difference as compared to say the TWS of the Daiwas. Also, it doesn't palm as nice as the Tatula CT neither. Going back to the casting distance, I didn't really try to fiddle with the settings today as it was super windy, so I just kept it at 2 brakes on inside as stock and 1 on the external dial. As such, I think I might have had too much braking especially when I was casting with the wind. But, I did think about changing the settings which was when I felt the Mag-Z is just so much easier to use. I haven't made up my mind on the reel yet. What I can say at this juncture is again the smoothness is for real and cannot be argued.

      Thanks man!! I'm honestly not too big on small baitcasters and using them for the salt. All my salt is for surf and boat chasing larger stripers , bluefish and pelagics....So I never really put too much time on 100 sized reels in the salt. I assume with regular maintenance it'd be fine.

    My curado k spools the line unevenly. It spools more line to the left side of the spool. Any way I can fix this? Could it be a damaged worm gear?( it doesn't look damage though)

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Two things...as this is very common. Many people spool their reel by pinching the line with their fingers right at the front of the reel. Assuming it's a right hand retrieve. That means your left hand is pinching the line. That will cause the line to favor the left hand side of the level wind guide causing line to favor or stack heavy to one side. Running the line through the guides is beneficial for baitcasters. Additionally. Make sure you have a tiny bit of spool tension via the spool tension adjustment knob. Some reels if you have too much or too little can move the spool to far to one side. I was pretty impressed how evenly the line spooled when I spooled the two curados I had.

    Being in the RC car hobby as well, bigger teeth will always be more durable than tiny teeth when it comes to gears. That being said I’ve yet to have any problems with any of my Shimano reels. My Daiwa and Lew’s reels are a little louder but that’s just due to the bigger gear teeth. Can’t go wrong with either IMO. I’m looking for a reel for a frogging setup and have my eye on the Curado K. Then again frogging setups take a beating so I also have my eye on the more affordable Lew’s speed spool lfs or fuego or even a revo x🤔 haven’t made my mind up yet.

    Great review!
    Very educational!
    Not a lot 'unboxing talk' and call it a review.
    Top notch!👍
    But what about the 'Homage' to the previous models, as the Curado 200E green one ( 2008?)
    Is the Curado K better in terms of durability comparred to the older green 200E ?
    Its more smooth i believe but the older Curado was made in Japan. The K was made in Malaysia, is there a quality difference?. My old shimano spinning reels are way more durable than the newer ones. Biomaster - Aerocast - Aero Stradics from 1995 , they all are way less smooth than the ci4 Stradics, and the recent Stradics without a backreel knob, but the older, ' 90's Japan models are a hell of a lot more durable than the current Shimano's.
    Is the green Curado 200E from 2008? More durable or better than the new shimano K?

      Perry Johnson honestly he’s referring mostly to baitcasters that are at a price point that you wouldn’t want to touch, as a beginner. I don’t care much for Daiwa reels. However the “coveted” Daiwa Tatula will throw lighter lures farther than many baitcasters in that price point - using the same diameter and type of line.

    Zander and those guys are bass fishermen and have no idea about the Gulf Coast and all the saltwater guys down here. I've asked questions before, heck back when the Team Daiwa Advantage HSTA was released, ('02 maybe?) about some of the corrosion resistance properties and could tell they had no clue people fished in the saltwater aside from offshore.
    But yes as you are saying, for those of us who wade fish in the salt with braid, salt water gets in everywhere and the only thing you can do is to tear your reel down to all the parts every few trips. I have a Cu71 that needs some TLC and has never been dunked. It sure would be nice if Shimano would make a sealed LP reel.

    Picked a K up the other day in shop here in Australia - stiffer than ever expected... noticed some of the fit and finish issues also, looks like im sticking with my trusty G series.
    Shimano should've also used the level wind saver with the plastic level wind shaft, certain markets will find these flogging out quicker than normal with shimano covering up any issues by making the old worn parts disappear.

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey man! I know you know your !@#$.......Any idea on the cause....or just a dud.
      I don't see the plastic as an issue for fw bass guys and I'm willing to take the word from the makers in regards to it's durability for that application. Though I am curious how they wear when put through the ringer in the salt with some of the bigger harder charging fish.

    I am so glad you did this video. I will admit that thing looks more similar to the Chronarch and Metanium IMO. Quick question about the bearing over the anti reverse, is there something like that I can put in my Metanium? I love that reel but the 'slop' you mention is the only complaint I have about it. It's in the Chronarch as well. I'm also a fan of the Metanium line guide and don't know why it isn't more widely used. Shimano really has stepped up their game the last year or so to the point I wonder if they are cutting into their Metanium sales.

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Kime, I don't think you can. I mean anything is possible but i don't think its as simple as finding a bearing that's the right size. The sleeve protrudes a tad.
      And there is the slightest bit of space for a bearing to fit. A bushing at the top would have been nice at the minimum. One thing I failed to mention was how it keeps the ar clutch sleeve centered when you are winching under load. So it helps the Antireverse function more efficiently and wear more evenly. I think it's a design choice to keep it out of the 100 sized reels. As it's not truly a big deal. For lighter applications (reels have been doing it that way fore a looooong time) Surprised though it's in the sub 200$ curado and no some pricier reels.

      @@TackleAdvisors Hey thanks! Yes, it's all very centered. I even reeled it off the Curado using my Squidder through all the guides and back onto (it's 20-braid yes) the Curado with the Squidder drag barely snug. Reeled on with rods pointing at each other, and still... lopsided enough to bother me. I just get to thinking the DC chip will get confused and be a DUI chip. Or tend to nest on the wider diameter when there's a chance. But yeah, I can see the line-guide running a tad further left than right. I appreciate you, replying! Thank you. For Freshwater applications.....10000% no bout a doubt it......Curado k. It's better in every way. For salt.....ball bearings rust.....plastic bushings don't. BUT.....antireverse clutches rust too. For me personally...who preps all reels for salt use...I'd go Curado or a daiwa with a t wing.....I'm in the middle of my teardown review and comparison of the concept z...and it was insteresting to see how much salt/ oxidation built up at the base of the handle shaft. And other parts....SO it does hold up pretty good in the salt. That being said....Winds change a ton...boats move...I prefer being able to adjust the brake on the fly. Vs having to pop the sidepleate... It's here I realized you said Concept A and not Z........It's a no brainer.....Curadok K or Daiwa no question

      I have yet to have a single issue with a leader knot on any tw reel. I use PR, FG, Alberto knots only.
      I like how the line comes off the reel better than standard levelwinds. None of that "bouncing off the rev limiter" sensation associated with standard levelwinds if you press the thumbar with the levelwind off to one side.
      I like how it handles heavy braid better too. But in terms of distance....Throwing bass lures on 7' sticks...90% of the reels out there will throw close to the same distances...it mainly comes down to how low on the brake you can go.

      And how the 1-6 works

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ethan. Assuming you bought one with the externally adjustable brake. It's pretty simple. If you are in the learning stages engage 3 brakes one the spool. And set the dial at 6. So on the spool you make sure 3 arms are clicked out. Set the spool tension adjustment knob to allow a slight bit of side to side spool movement. I never recommend using the spool tensioner for braking on newer brake designs. The 3 on dial set to 6 is going to provide tons of braking. So back off the dial until it gets a bit squirrely. (if it doesn't open the side plate and disengage another brake so only 2 go out) and set the dial to 6 and work down). Remember 90%of the time the more braking the lower max distance. I usually throw baits with 2 brakes on 2 to 3 on the dial. Some lines I'll go down to 1 brake and 3 or 4 on the dial

      The biggest complaint with the Curado I was that people who like to palm their reels were finding that they would accidentally adjust breaks. Good luck adjusting the breaks accidentally with the new system. If that’s why they did it like that, it’s almost ingenious and works wonderfully. Only reason I’ve come up with. Mine does it too. Along with every other one. Nobody can complain about it now though.

      @TackleAdvisors  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're welcome. If you are just getting into fishing. And looking at baitcasters. I'd probably say your best bet is a tatula or fuego ct. All brands aside....That braking system is the easiest to learn on. And there is a learning curve that comes with baitcasters, and it can be very frustrating. Unfortunately those reels are really only going to work well with lure weights in ranging from 1/4 ounces and up. Maybe a tad lighter..but really perform well north of 1/4 ounce. In the 300 $ range. Anything from daiwa you can get that says SV on it is a win. As are the reels from shimano that have MGL in the name. If you don't need a ton of drag the abu garcia mgx and mgx treme are very fun reels. But at least from what i found in the xtreme2. It's drag topped out at a hair under 7lbs. WHich meant setting the hook on bulky baits difficult. But it was great at all the light stuff and weighs nothing.

I know there are guys out there that have had corrosion problems with that x ship bearing. (though i'm not one of em but i use corrosion x grease at that bearing as a bit of preventative maintenance.

They're very good reels...I just don't like that metanium form factor compared to other more compact sized reel with the same capacity. Gonna sell them for 400 each which includes full supertuning. Or 350 each for the pair. They're in near mint condition.
      The new Ex DC or Ant DC may be the best brake ever made in a bass reel...but they're large. Put that same brake in a aldebaran sized reel and now that's getting somewhere.
      No need for 7 ounce bass reels anymore...6 ounces or less should be where most reels in that price range should be aside from high torque demand reels

      I never fished that reel. I hear it's similar to the met dc brake. And the met dc is a great caster. The best thing to do is fish it and see if it's what you like. it's a different kind of casting. The met dc is brain free casting and very good distance. Kind of takes some of the fun out of it. It's like setting an sv spool at 20 only you get much more distance. But if you set it that sv spool at 3 you'll get better distance than DC...but you gotta know what your doing or Kaboom! Do ya get what I'm saying??? And you can't forget about the dc whine. th-cam.com/video/XTQ9KeoJ3Kw/w-d-xo.html

      I haven't heard much chatter about that applying to multiple reels. But I do know that Spheros and daiwa bg reels sold in the states are superior to their JDM counterparts. How could you have a bfs dc reel the bfs is a braking system all of its own lol? Unless you mean like a dc braking system for very light baits I agree that it should happen. I have a Aldebaran bfs xg and it works good for my river smallies but I think that might be a bit overkill. I don't think shimano can make a bfs xg because you need a non wiffle spool to keep your dc breaking "guts" in the spool.

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly...however...some DC brakes were wiffle spools (I have a calcutta te dc/ conquest dc) And it uses what looks to be a colored portion that the dc brake reads. May be a thin magnetic strip (never bothered to check) and it reads how many times it passes the sensor. So it's definitely possible to do and keep the spool weight to a minimum. DC ends up braking magnetically so in the end it's just a fancy way of doing it :)
      I just got a 16 alde bfs xg....Just posted a vid on it. Absolutely marvelous reel a bone stock ultra light baitcaster.
      i'll have a unboxing up tomorrow hopefully (i hate doing unboxings. but they get views....and i can use the purchases as tax write offs i think *sigh) But I take it out of the box....then take it apart so it goes a bit further than "hey look i gots me a feeshin reel and it's smooth"

    Thank you for the breakdown..I've been looking for both a swimbait reel and a medium heavy/heavy reel setup (looking at toro beast, Calcutta, etc) also something to throw heavier bucktails at the striped bass and salmon..sounds like the k can cover it.
    Been looking for a real life interpretation of all the marketing-thanks!
    I'm an Amazon buy so I see your sponsor link

      My friend who helped develop the new tranx spends a month of they year slinging spoons and centerpinning for british columbia steelhead. He uses the tranx and his friend the curado. Both function perfectly. Very sturdy design...but man that water intrusion is troubling.
      I'm working on a video series that breaks down each of the silly buzz words used in an effort to lighten our wallets....Like Zero Adjuster, Core protect, micro module, Hamai cut gears...bla bla bla...oh and the two biggest offenders...HAGANE and DIGIGEAR
      And thanks man!! Every little bit helps!!! As a rough number...Amazon pays out around 5% commissions on any purchase made after following one of my links. So even if you follow the link for a Curado......and buy a pair of shoes.....I still get paid the fee (90 days later) For the purchase of the shoes ((as an example))
