If they were accurate, they would have worn undergarments under their corsets, it wouldn't cut into their back. Honestly, it just sounds like the corsets weren't made well or fit correctly as there is plenty of historical experts, women especially, that explain that corsets were not torture devices and were simply supposed to be like a bra. A structural purpose, not a "make me look skinny" purpose.
Thank you. I was coming to mention that but now I don’t have to type it all up. Corsets were like exoskeletons, designed to support them and were definitely comfortable. I want a corset to help with back support because even though I’m young my back often hurts, I just don’t know where to purchase a well fitting one and don’t have the knowledge or skill to make one myself.
Yes!! THANK YOU! All of the people saying “the costumes were so uncomfortable idk how people back then lived like that” are irruption me because they didn’t! I have a store bought corset and it is very uncomfortable for me, because it isn’t made specifically for my body. I took the time to make stays for myself for a costume and they are so comfortable I could wear them every day because it was made to my own body measurements. If the costumes were uncomfortable and cutting into their skin it’s because they weren’t wearing proper undergarments and the right size corset 🤦🏻♀️
As you can see in the comments the education on corsets by lovely historical fashion youtubers like Karolina Żebrowska and Bernadette Banner is finally kicking in 💪🏼
Yes! Too bad the costume designer didn't put forth the effort to educate herself about the garments she was making. Even with her ridiculous modern flair. And the people who made this video. Just spewing the inaccurate corset stereotypes all over the place.
Corsets weren’t that bad if you wore them correctly. I don’t understand why all these tv shows insist on having corsets as underwear, they were always worn with something underneath.
Corsets were underwear, but we as a modern society have collectively forgotten the concept of multi-layered underwear apparently. Why does not a single costumer this side of the equator know what a goddamn chemise is?
Regency corsets weren't tight laced. In fact, they weren't corsets at all. They were stays. The regency silhouette basically trued to hide the the natural waist so the stays were basically just the same as a bra. They were just there to provide support
Maybe in Season 2, they'll give them the stays they should've been wearing, and the shifts that went underneath the stays, to keep the skin from being bruised
The only reason their corsets are uncomfortable are because they are against the actors' skin. Historically, women wore a chemise under the corsets. They also didn't tightlace like Ms. Featherington was shown to be doing in the first episode. That was rarely done if done at all.
I was just coming down to the comments to mention that. The shade throne on corsets throughout the video was infuriating. Also did you see the picture of the corset makers wife. She had such a small waist that it had to be the result of tight lacing, that is when it gets harmful and dangerous.
Also tightlacing didn’t become a thing until the 1850’s when steel rivets began being used. It was impossible to tight lace beforehand because the fabric used would have ripped
That corset which is actually called Stays would not be able to be tight laced. And of they wore the proper undergarments eg a shift, there would be no marks.
Not to mention if they had stays that were actually properly fitted to their body. I've made stays before, and even my shoddy first attempt - where I DID actually tear a hand-sewn eyelet because I laced it too tightly - was apparently still better than whatever these actors had, because I didn't feel uncomfortable at all.
The costume designer saying there was “no how no way” to make the costumes more comfortable is absolutely ridiculous and she should absolutely not work again. Corsets and stays can be very comfortable, when constructed and made correctly. Were the corsets made to the actresses’ measurements, properly broken in, and for the love of god allowed to wear a shifts underneath, they would have had no complaints. Corsets may take a bit to get used to, but if an actresses is complaining of bruising, that’s a sign of a costumer being wholly inadequate and their job.
A few points about corsetry - a corset should be fitted/custom made to the wearer, to make sure the shape is right and the corset will be comfortable - you shouldn't tight-lace if you want to breath or move comfortably - the corset is more uncomfortable the skinnier you are, since there is less fat to squeeze and act as a cushion - corsets aren't meant to be worn directly on your skin, i'm sorry but that is just stupid idea ... corsets are quite comfortable if you do it right
Can you stop promoting corset myths? This video is full of garbage - corsets are not uncomfortable, especially regency corsets. Though they would have been a lot more comfortable if they were wearing chemises underneath!
I loved the gown Daphne wore after the Duke hurt her feelings so when she was going to see the Prince she changed her mind about the dress she was going to wear and wore a stunning white or silver dress that was stunning!!
They put them on work they go should be putt on from top and bottom to the middel buy they laist them to the bottom and they didn't but something under it also they tight laist even though they didn't need to and you need to wear a corset warm so the corset fits correctly and is perfect for your body
Yes! I wear a corset nearly 24/7. No it doesn't hurt but it sure helps my slipping rib syndrome.. please stop saying they are all bad. That's not true. Not if it fits right. You wear a liner or shirt under and dont lace so tight that it does hurt.
I’m so glad to find so many corset supporters in the comments. I really want a corset to help with my back pain but don’t know where to buy a well fitting and good quality one but one day I will, and I’ll were it with pride.
@@sharonwilson9077 I have videos on my corsets.. including an edwardian and a swimming/bathing corsets. I'm also learning corsetry and getting into the biz myself.
First of all, no one is wearing a shift, which would make the stays much more comfortable because it’s a layer of fabric between the skin and the stays. second of all, tight lacing, a rare event, wouldn’t have been a thing or even useful. With the hand-done eyelets, you really can’t pull tight and you don’t even have a reason to. Regency fashions didn’t even show the waist, so the most painful thing that might have been uncomfortable, had they been wearing shifts, the only part of the outfit that would be washed, would probably be the busk, a Wooden or bone stick, that goes in a pocket in the center front of the stays. This is one of my pet peeves. If you don’t agree with me, then fine, but at least go watch one of @bernadette banner’s videos.
Yesss!!! Another Bernadette fan. I used to fall into the camp of those who think corsets are uncomfortable despite my very limited knowledge of them, until I was enlightened by Bernadette’s videos.
In the Regency Era, women didn't wear tight corsets... they wore stays which were not tight. They also wore layers underneath the stays. And if the corset was fitted well, they would not cause pain or discomfort. The writers of these vids probably should do more research about this stuff...
I wish everyone would realize that a lot of women chose to go without a corset during this period. And that tight lacing wasn't really a thing during this era because the whole structure didn't even have boning in it.
I was so disappointed with the costumes in this show they just didn’t get it right. First of all where are the bonnets?? Second of all: bloomers? bloomers weren’t really a thing in that time period, you could’ve saved some fabric and make some chemises instead, no one would wear corsets on bare skin and almost no one would tight lace them, also these aren’t corsets they are stays. You can modernize whatever you want just do some actual research first
1:25 SERIOUSLY? everyone else here already said similar things, but a) corsets were not worn like that, and b) corset were not worn at all in the regency period. They used short stays instead, similar to a modern bra. At least they go the part about the inaccurate costumes right, which however includes the corsets in the show. Apart from that though, I still love the dresses.
To answer your question if I'd be able to wear a corset for hours unfazed, it's a major yes, I used to corset/waist train (none of mine fit anymore, need new ones)
If the STAYS (aqka corsettes) were uncomfortable it is because those responsible chose to put ill fitting stays on the actors, and advance the myths about stays and tight lacing for the storyline. The emphasis on a small waist was left behind in the 18th c, and regency short stays were no more constricting than a sports bra. Well fitting stays are comfortable and supportive as many have pointed out.
Should say that corset is normal one its not historical even the long one wouldn't be necessary tight lacing waysnt a deal during the natural body time these costumes were styled in as well. Its more like a ill fit undergarments or a intentional design.
This show is probably good, but to call it a historical piece is stupid. As a black person, I do not see how black people during this era could have even been within 10 feet of the royalty in this show. It is not historically accurate at all.
Is it me but these dont look like corsets these look like stays and either way these garments are meant to be made to your body specifically that way its comfortable
I wear split drawers and regency stays for hours upon end during the weekends in the summer. Wearing split drawers is more comfortable than modern underwear, thank you linen and cotton. For the stays, you must season it. I just wore a brand new set of stays for 5 hours while playing D&D. That means that the few bones it has has the ability to start to form to my own personal shape. They are comfortable if done correctly.
The corsets were supposed to have a busk of wood going down the front of the corset.must have been uncomfortable sitting down…but most women did not too many dresses as they depict in this series…clothing even for the rich were expensive.
nobody wore a corset in the regency area. You wore a chemise and over it a stay. No tight lacing as here you have the very high waist. The regency dresses were one of the most comfortable dress types in the 19th century at all.
Not all corsets are tight-laced. In fact they just weren't in the regency era, it wouldn't make sense since the natural waist didn't play a role in the regency silhouette. The tight-lacing scene was just dumb
