Even as a self-proclaimed maximalist, I’ve been thinking a lot about what it means to pare down and only surround myself with the things that bring me the most joy. It’s not a single piece of furniture, art or decor, but rather a collection of memories that are summoned by what I choose to furnish and decorate our home with 🥰
Tell me, what’s the one item in your home that brings you the most joy?
I'm a 61 year old artist and I only recently started putting my art in every single room and it feels so good. It makes me so happy to see my art working so well in my home. I love to decorate and now that I am retired I realized how much real artwork does for a room, it really makes it feel unique.
The built-in vanity and shelf unit in my bedroom is my very favorite piece. I designed it, and my husband built it for me. Everything else in the bedroom was selected to complement that piece.
My husband and I have just moved away from our daughter and other family members due to my husbands work. Yesterday, I purchased some large floating picture shelves. I placed them on the wall facing our bed in the primary bedroom. Here I placed numerous framed family photos, including photos of our parents siblings and nieces and nephews and our beautiful daughter of course. It looks great but best of all, the first thing we see when we wake up, is our loved family members. When I look at these photos it brings happy memories and how lucky we are to have such love ❤️
Aw I love that!! 😍🥹
.....That sounds lovely....however, I've read that having photos of your children in the bedroom is a " No- no " in the Bedroom, with Feng Shui...because you have children in a room that is supposed to be private and reserved for Rest. Relaxing and Romance. There is an area on the Map ( Feng Shui) for Family. And Children.
Just providing information, people can choose what they wish to do. :)
So many designers (and real estate brokers) advocate removing personal items from public spaces. This video is so refreshing! I’m not into maximalism or clutter but I do love having meaningful objects and pictures around! Thank you!
Yes I agree! I'm a hobbyist photographer, and the thing people most often comment on in my large gallery wall of my two young boys. They walk in and exclaim "oh I love your gallery wall!" When displayed in a tasteful way, personal items look beautiful to you and your guests. I love going into someone's home and seeing their "story."
Staging is VERY different from designing for our own homes. I’ve done both professionally and there’s just no soul to staging (for me)
It’s all about the story to help you feel invited into the home, agreed Bethany! ☺️
✨🙏✨love that you are “ down to earth” and embrace Real Life and Living… appreciating how special our individual lives are and have that reflected in our homes..🌷
✨🙏✨
I hope that message resonates through the next time you bring something meaningful into your home Charmaine! ☺️💖
I love it that you talked about displaying collections. I would love to see in depth videos about ways to tastefully display them. My plant collection is my favorite thing in my house and I’m always looking for new ways to show them off.
I like to move my plants around. Then they get to be showcased. It also lets me enjoy each one more as it occupies its showcase room or spot.
Check out the video called “How to decorate with sentimental items” - it’s all about collections Angee ☺️
Loved this video! So often in design, we focus on perfection, but I love the "lived in" and "be yourself" side to design. After all, we are living in our homes, we should love it!
Perfection is simply a fancy term for procrastination 😂
My husband and I are building a She Shed for me. We are having fun building the Shed, designing the interior, picking paint colors, flooring, wall finishes, etc. It will be my "Happy" place to create and relax when we are done.
Design should be FUN!! You hear that a lot but it’s hard with a budget, construction, schedules, so many details 🤪 In the end, it’s going to be so worth it Margie!! Excited for you! 🙌
Decorating a home is a never ending process. I move things around a lot depending on my mood. Every item has a little story behind it, no matter how simple it is. memories are built into these all over my home and I love it.
Precisely how you build a home that rises up to greet you 🙌
This video was different and great! What gives me joy at home, besides my family and cats is my art collection and plant collection. Both give the home a very cosy feeling.
Art + plants + pitter patter 🐾👧🏻👶🏻 = pure bliss 🥰
There are many…. But nice painted home brings me joy.
I’m heavily inspired by color as well. Love neutrals in quiet corners, but need bold strokes in all the common areas of my home
Loved this!!!! 1 thing that brings me the most joy is all my plants! :)
Me too 🪴🪴🪴 I’m addicted!!
Thank you Julie! I really needed this video today! My bedroom is my special pvt place.
Bedrooms are the ultimate sanctuary since we spend so much time there. The best spot to prioritize since it’s where we get our energy to tackle the day
This video brought me JOY!😍
Aw thank you so much Ellen! ☺️🙏💖
Thank you Julie for sharing this video! I have a gallery wall of my grandson’s art work. Although he is only 7 I LOVE it It brings me so much joy. I believe it brings him joy as well.
Aw I love that! Can’t wait for my kids’ art walls 🖼️ I have a feeling it’s going to take up entire rooms 😅
I love the idea of a finished room, date I hope for my house to have all finished rooms throughout ❤
One at a time will help build momentum to tackle the rest Susan! ☺️🙌
This video gived me joy. Thanks Julie great tips as always.
Thank you so much for watching Lara 🙏☺️
I love my bedroom. I enjoy the dark moody color that I feel make it cozy. Others feel its dark and I have to many plants but plants make me happy and I have a green thumb, my plants are healthy looking. Thank you for this video 🙂
Same here. Some may say my home is cluttered with plants, but they bring me LIFE!! 💚☺️🙌
All my plants bring me joy! Fortunately I have a green thumb😂😉
Yup!! Even one small little pot in each room of the home can bring so much life 💚
Hi Julie!
I agree that the home including the yard should make you happy. Even if not the whole home at least part of it. And that has to be curated or thought about by the person who needs the joy. Even your husband and your children should have the right to curate their own spaces. This might not be what you or I want but it’s not our joy. It’s theirs. Own your joy ! I sure have seen you change over these last few years. From glam with big necklaces to elegant and desiring simple joys! Nice work!
The best feeling is carving out dedicated spaces for all my family members. They can feel my love 🥰 The costume jewelry will make a comeback. Once the girls are in middle school, watch out!! Mama’s gonna be in her best Iris Apfel era! 🤩😂
Thank you Julie!
Thank you for watching Paula 🙏☺️
One of your best videos...it touched my heart.
Aw thanks so much Christine 🙏☺️
The many tips you have given in past videos bring me joy, especially about finding my own decorating style from the help of your past videos. Thanks!
That’s the most important since it’s our North Star Becky! Understanding what we like and don’t like (as opposed to buying trendy items) will help guide our choices
I love the big piece of orange and red art that is hanging in my dining room , and my vintage Jean Gillon chairs in my living room….all thrifted.
Omg!! 😍 Been wanting one for the girl’s room to replace our nursing glider. You think they’ll appreciate Gillon there? 🤔😄
@@JulieKhuu I hope you can find one! I absolutely love them, I have 2 chairs and an ottoman ❤️
Houseplants, chunks of petrified wood, and Oregon driftwood add pops of contrast from the outdoors to my loved collection of pottery.
💚🪴💚
Your home is beautiful! I am very sentimental, so I can identify with having all the personal reminders around me that bring me joy!
Thank you Debra! Now I need to tidy it up for a proper home tour! 🙈😂
My plants makes my happy and my collection of Buddha statues. I am not Buddhist but for some whatever reason I love having them all around my house. I feel calm and peaceful whenever I look at them.
I have a client who is the same way. He’s not Buddhist but loves the statues, artwork, and little trinkets. They really do have a calming effect 💆🏻
11:12 dear Julie, your home is dynamic, so don't worry if it's not "finished" .
I just spent 5 weeks visiting in a very static home. My oldest friend expects and likes things to be static. But - it's not me. I did some reorganizing on paper to relieve the boredom/ activate some Chi. And moved the plants around. 😍
Move 9 things around if you’re feeling stuck/ stagnant Dyana! Right on 🙌
@@JulieKhuu nine is a magic number!
What you said about artists not finishing their art work and you not finishing your home is true about plumbers electricians landscapers …..etc 😊
Yup, pretty much every professional out there 🙈
Thank you so much for this uplifting video ❤
Thank you so much for watching Cindy ☺️🙏
I never thought I understood the concept of keeping an item only if it brings “joy”. It’s a lamp. If it functions, I’m good to go. No “joy”. Just..it’s a lamp. Now, I’m beginning to understand. I have all along understood the meaning of joy, I just wasn’t letting myself have my own interpretation of joy. I don’t apply my joy to individual items. I apply it to the overall concept. For me, it’s more the opposite. If something doesn’t quite “fit in”. It’s more of looking around the room, and loosing comfort when, (coincidentally! Seriously, I just now realized this) I look at two lamps in my living room! (Must have been subconsciously!) Although I still really like them, they just irk me being in this space. The good news; I love lamp shopping! Just an aside; this video gave me joy! The selection of decorated rooms was perfect, but I especially loved the little glimpses of the children having fun. Your daughter hiding behind a big stuffed animal; all the little ones dancing with abandon, made me smile. Kids find such joy, in the tiniest of things. The old “I gave them a toy, and they played with the box!”, has proven true time and time again. It brings back the happy memory of my, then, five-year-old granddaughter spending an hour, trying to keep a plastic grocery bag aloft! She had such concentration on a plastic BAG! That video of her still brings me joy! Thanks, Julie and crew. I loved this video
Children are so pure indeed 🥹 I’ve been trying to find different ways to translate what design means to me for all the viewers out there. Less fluff, more feeling. Hope I’m on the right track Jeanne-Marie! Your feedback is so appreciated 🙏💖
(At 400) I love how you painted alcoholism as an art-style. Your channel goes asf. Keep up the great work. I know it ain’t easy
Thank you for watching Drago! 🙏☺️
I love your ideas, greetings from Germany! And I love my chosen colors, limette green, ocean blue and white between, so refreshing, when I enter the door! Thanks for all your videos! I am a great fan of yours!
Good 💡
Will try to inculcate
What a soothing palette Hannes 🩵💚💙
Great video Julie! You’ve caused me look at some ways to create sacred space in my home, and love it more. The best thing in my house… My cat! ❤
Our pets just fill the home with so much LIFE! 🐾 I’m here for it 🫶🏻
@@JulieKhuu you're right! Without pets and love it's just a house...

I love love this video, thanks so much. I think that I was waiting for this video , I need it after we recently moved from West New York area to Canyon Crest Riverside CA Iam trying to decorate my house but, I am missing myself on it and now with all you explained that we need spaces that give us joy I think Iam ready to continue my projects with a different view of things, things that we need in our life . Thanks Julie ❤
One tiny corner is all you need Jean 🙌 Having this will allow you to build momentum and tackle the rest of the home at your own pace
Hi Julie, love your tips
Right on! I also share them with friends and guests. So much fun and meaning.
Thank you for watching 🙏☺️
Thanks a lot for such a joyfull and inspiring video!!!
You are so welcome! Thank you for watching Tetiana 💖
Excellent video Julie. A home should feel warm and welcoming to everyone who enters it. I have a few friends who’s home are so uptight, I walk in and look forward to leaving. I have always preferred the feel of a beautiful restaurant or hotel. Not one were you worry about every step you take. Thank you again for great advice. Take care. ❤
You really can “feel” people’s auras as you enter their personal domain. It’s so important for me to express myself through my space so our guests feel welcomed and inspired 🥰
This video was amazing; the kids were so adorable. The level of beauty here is totally joyful. Can you post the link for that incredible multicolored sofa that was featured here? Just stunning and the happiest sofa I ever saw!!!!
Thank you for watching Mary! Watch my Pinterest Hacks video to find anything you see in my videos ✌🏻☺️
My art collection. I would definitely grab as many pieces as I could if I had to rush out. It reminds of places I’ve visited, the talent of so many, boldness, culture.. definitely joy!
One day, I hope to curate an investment of art pieces that I can pass down for generations to come 😍
LOL!! When you mentioned your kids at the 12 minute mark, and showed them all jumping around... until you said, "they can have friends over" I was thinking, "Oh my God, how many kids has she got?? Six? No wonder she hasn't finished... oh! Friends. Right. Whew!"
Omg I can’t even imagine more than two 🤪
great ideas!
Thank you for watching Janet! ☺️🙏
Thank you, madam.
Thank you for watching Nelson 🙏☺️
Great video!
Thank you so much Kit! 🙏☺️
I have an original painting of birds which I love.
Sounds like something you can pass down for generations 🖼️😍
👌🏻

Mh, the problem is: that this is why my home feels a bit cluttered: Soooo much sentimental items......Things that have a meaning to me....
There’s a way to corral them and create mini meaningful moments ☺️ check out my video titled “How to decorate with sentimental items”
Very nice !
How are you able to manage copyright issues when you show images
I credit the designers
