  • Techniques I have used to resurface driveways, I want to make it plain that it is the last resort before replacing the concrete. but the old timers would use what I call a "depression era" cheap fix to keep old concrete looking new, all my videos are my ways and ideas, I always suggest anyone doing any type of work to consult professional help www.amazon.com...

Mr. Haduck, I'm a "New School" guy humbled and appreciative of your "Old School" wisdom. I hold two university engineering degrees but have been intimidated for the longest time by a crumbling driveway in my front yard. Cracks propagating, weeds growing out of the cracks, multiple patches from the previous owner, letters from the homeowner's association, and of course my wife prompting me to act - they all failed to get me moving until I saw your videos. Your constant encouragement, "Ain't no big deal. Just get it done." rang in my ears as I cleaned up the cracks, applied Cement-all, feathered it with a sponge, and finally painted the entire driveway with Portland. It's one of your most basic projects - Masonry 101. But my driveway went from the worst one on the street to the best-looking one in only 3 weekends. I know it's a temporary fix, but you've taught me how to maintain what I've done. More importantly, the intimidation is gone, my wife and my neighbors are all impressed with me, and I'm studying your website for next-level projects. In the "Old School" university, you have become one my most valuable professors. Thank you, Sir, for making your knowledge and expertise available. Terry Anderson

Mr Haduck, you're one of the best instructors on TH-cam. I do repairs around my home and learned cement and masonry work from my 82 year-old neighbor who was a mason most of his life. Loved working with him and he taught me a lot. Age caught up with him, however, and I've lost him. So now, you're my higher education on the masonry 'how-to.' I already did the Portland Paint resurface job on my front path and sidewalk and made the place look nicer than ever. Did it last October, and as you said, it's an annual thing, so I'll be doing it again this October ... if it ever quits raining! I also did some patch and fill with your guidance. As another person said, you're great to listen to and easy to get comfortable with and get down to business. Thanks. I have enough cement around this place that I'll likely use almost all your video instruction eventually! ;-) KC Fords NJ

This might be the wrong post to ask this, I've watched many of your videos and love your wisdom, especially about the dry vs wet - saying this, I have a concrete driveway that has sunken about 1-2" below my garage, my driveway doesn't go far, maybe 20', I'd like to raise this as well as add to the gravel part of my driveway. I respect and honor your wisdom.
    Thank you again,

I finished the rest of my repairs with cement all like you use , then white washed with Johns recipe for white wash, Did not use the acrylic seal and bond on top, because once you use that you can not white wash or any thing for up to 4 years. John, thank you for your service to battling the push of communism. Your brave service helped not only your own country, but helped freedom-loving peoples and countries around the globe.

I can't thank you enough Mike. I stumbled across your video looking for a solution to fixing black marks made on my front sidewalk concrete by putting down driveway sealer (Seal Best 400) on my driveway. When this process was being done, tape was not applied to the edges of driveway and the driverway sealer got spilled in spots on the front sidewalk.
By watching your video and purchasing all the equipment and materials through Home Depot, I was able to get the black marks out. It is like new concrete was just poured. I even applied the "white washing" to my back patio and it took out all of the old grease stains in the concrete. I used a paint brush this time, next time I might try a paint roller for more of an even finish.
Before seeing this video, I wasted about 40 dollars on thinners and other chemicals that basically did nothing to get the stains out of the concrete.
Thanks again Mike. I learned something new (and fairly cheap....only cost about 60.00 dollars to get the concrete bonding adhesive, portland cement, cement trowel mixing handle, bucket, painters tape, and paint brush.

Mike, i used your method of resurfacing my driveway. I repaired the cracks, pressure washed it , then applied the Portland cement mixture. The driveway goes up a small hill and has dried and looks great. The area at the top of that hill flattens out where we park our cars. That area looks blotchy like some areas are darker than others. The day before we covered the driveway, we had rain. Of course we wet the area before applying the cement, as you say. Do you think this will even out given a few more dry days? Never would have tried this without your help. You're a great teacher! Thanks!

    • @MikeHaduck
      @MikeHaduck  8 ปีที่แล้ว

+Shirley Faulkner , it usually does and its a continues thing, and it will dry blotchey if it has different drying times, a couple hours could make that difference for sure, but like I said it is just a covering and you got to keep doing it every year and then you get better at it. It is a cheap fix for sure, thanks mike

I did have some success with using your technique and truly the walks are not perfect, but the ones we did turned out well. I would call you a life saver, but how about instead, a walk saver. I have never patched anything with concrete in my life, but your teachings were very helpful and so the entire family thought it looked like fun and joined in. We are not done, but the start of the project has a good new look already. Thank You!

Mr. Mike Haduck- thank you so much for sharing your vast masonry knowledge and experience. This video gave me the solution (no pun intended) to a major project I was in the middle of. I purchased a 40 year old property in California and all the concrete flat work had been painted and was all in some state of massive disrepair- the driveway, front porch, back porch- and looked like a holy mess. All the usual problems when trying to paint masonry and why here in California I've always heard the adage NEVER PAINT STUCCO. A good stucco job lasts 40-50 + years maintenance free. As soon as you paint it you're locked into a cycle of having to maintain the paint. Anyway, I stripped all the coatings and found that some sections of the concrete had been colored with iron oxide- Red. Long and short of it is the portland cement whitewashing adhered and covered it all.
I'm back to concrete grey. And the coating cost a grand total of under 15$- half a bag of portland cement and 3/4 bottle of Quickcrete Concrete Bonding agent. I put up a video on youtube to show some before and afters. With the deepest respect and gratitude I say, 'Thanks".

Mike I patched a ladies driveway told her it would not last that long and she said she might have it ripped out and black topped. so I said I will coat it twice with driveway sealer or foundation coating. driveway looked blacktopped and 5 years later it is still good. seals out the water from getting into the concrete

thanks. ..... local concrete company totally screwed me on my first pad with a terrible mix because there conveyer belt kept jamming , on super hot day no less , was impossible to work with especially being more rock than anything . did what I could do, especially for never have done this before , trying to make a 9x8 look half way decent was a challenge , and now today looks absolutely terrible, so thanks for showing me a way to fix my good awful mess . . I was so disappointed this morning, all concrete burned up for nothing and something almost as permanent as a tattoo laying there looking like &$##:8$++3;$;;$- . thank you for the hope..

Mike Haduck Masonry - Thanks Sir. Appreciate the old school info. It seems like this (& other laborious jobs) old school tradition sadly will be lost w/ older generations because IMO, this younger generation, they’re lazy & ignorant. They’d rather waste their $$ & call a pro or semi-pro if you will (which is ok I guess) they choose NOT to learn and NOT do jobs such as what you sir are teaching us in this video. Again. Just my opinion but I’ve seen it too many times. Thanks again!👍✌️I have a small section of concrete spalling (sidewalk) project I’m gonna take care of next week. Thanks for the knowledge. 👍

Thank you, Mike for all your videos. You have given a 65 year old lady the knowledge and guts to tackle some big projects. I have a question about "painting" concrete with Portland. I used your method in this video and the results on a walkway look quite blotchy. I mixed the Portland to latex paint consistency and it spread on wet concrete easily. Can/should I give it another coat? If yes, how long should I wait.
