    This press has worked like a charm for my projects th-cam.com/users/postUgkxajoEbapTfqWaadnqb04h6U576yxXp-FE . I didn't even secure it to my table top, mainly due to the fact that I was using a 15 lbs drill vise. It's not flimsy at all as to what others have claimed it to be. Make sure the locking nuts and levers are secured and there won't be any issues with light pressure and patience. I was able to drill through aluminum, plastic, and steel (steel took a while) with no problems at all. Yeah it took a little longer than a regular drill press, but I don't have the space OR the money for one.The instruction manual was worthless, but luckily assembling the press was intuitive. However, the manual would be good for ordering replacement parts if needed. There is a nice breakdown of the parts that are included in the kit. Before ordering, make sure it is compatible with your unit, it is clearly stated what models the press is compatible with.This was an excellent purchase for $40!!

    I love how you made the stand pipe sound like an Australian didgeridoo! I also like watching restorations. I don't often do restoration but occasionally I'll find some old rusted tool at a garage or a yard sale, or at a flea market. I also find on occasion something someone was throwing away that I could fix or put to some other use. I just subscribed and clicked on the bell. I never know when watching restorations I may learn something new.

    Almost eighteen years ago I bought a drill press and a table saw from an old machinist (he was in his 80s at that point) who had made prototypes for Walker-Turner. Interesting fellow, though. He was a real craftsman. I saw some of his work and he was insanely precise about everything.

    I have a WT 1-1140 bought from my neighbor for $150 and did a restore around 2017. Too bad he painted the WT tag on the head. Even the mast, he didn't at least use a Scotch pad or easier yet, plumbers sand cloth, like I did. I even did a light spray with clear lacquer on all the steel parts that weren't painted, even the mast. It sits in a garage and before I did the restore it got a bit of surface rust just from the humidity in there. It's been about 4-5 years and still looks brand new. I didn't take it all apart, if it's not broke, don't fix it. (or as AVE says, 'If it's not broke, fix it until it is'. lol). The only thing I would like to do is to test the runout on it. Just use it a few times a month for stuff around the house instead of a hand drill, nothing with needed precision. I bought a 3" drill press vise which fits very nice, using 5/16" stainless bolts and wing nuts.

    A worthy project. The suspense of whether you'd break a casting or the furnace would kick on ending the video in a flash of orange light kept me glued to the edge of my seat. When you dropped the headstock I was sure you'd have broken something and pinched off a couple of fingers. Thanks for documenting many a bumble, not that I'd do any better if every move was documented. PS: So that's how second hand shooting irons end up in such... er... remarkable condition. Thanks for the posting. Your video was mildly instructive and far more entertaining than 90% of what's on TV.

    • @partsandresto
      @partsandresto  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ha! I’m glad you enjoyed Mark. I’m no expert, just a guy in his shop. Experts, more often than not, just edit out their mistakes. I’m not sure I know what a shooting iron is, please enlighten me!

    • @markkoons7488
      @markkoons7488 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're right about "experts" editing out their boo-boos. I know a guy who writes for the woodworking magazines. He often uses uses flashy looking lumber like lacewood but doesn't even bother sanding. Dad referred to firearms as "shooting irons", a faux hayseedism. In the case of your video, I mean the .22 being fogged in rattle can gray overspray.

      @partsandresto  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mark Koons ah. Thanks for the reply Mark. Yeah that gun is broken anyway, purchased it that way as a gunsmith special, which is why I don’t care about it at all. It’s getting fully stripped and rebuilt at some point.

I have a similar looking 1950's/60's solid drill press that I intend to restore soon - will look at name plate to see if it is a Walker Turner. Watch Keith Fenner's video (not Keith Rucker) on restoration and upgrading of a Chinese bench grinder. He turned it around and it became a much better machine than the factory original.

Why did you not use that for the smaller parts? Did you use a "rust reformer" product for your paint primer?

    I rebuilt a 1943 version. I used electrolysis for cleaning up the head and post. Sure beats a wire wheel and it does a better job. I masked the emblems, they pop in the raw but I may color them on. I used a SP350 spray wax on the column and table so it's still bare steel/cast iron but protected from corrosion. Looks great overall

    Yup, I even put the same type of green link-belt on my 1938 Cincinnati drill press but I only put 5% of the work into refurbing it as you did. It's a bit crusty but it wouldn't work any better if I painted it. Remarkable how the parts on mine are almost identical to those on yours. I also agree you should throw a tie wrap around and shorten up the power cable from the switch to the motor...that big loop is asking for trouble.

I own one out in the garage it’s an old Rockwell same exact saw except the base is not nearly as nice as yours. That said I’m curious why you would shit-can the original motor. Those things are tanks and they last forever. Never have to worry about replacing it. I just was curious why you did that, if you want to donate it to a good cause, cause I need one let me know I’d be happy to take it. LOL thanks for your video it was great!

    OK, someone already mentioned the painting of the motor end caps. WHY did you paint over a pristine original, metal walker-turner label? Why not use the sand blaster in your shop for all that cast iron cleaning? You need to get a buffing wheel to polish some of the things (on/off switch, the handle knobs and handles, etc.

    Question: I have an original w-t 1100 im working on wiring. My problem is there are 3 wires protruding from the 220v, 3/4h.p, 3 phase motor, all black and cloth insulated therefore unidentified. How do i identify them? Are they 2 hots and 1 ground? I also have a period power switch id like to use on it. The switch has 3 terminals on each side (6 total) so id also like to know which wires i connect to the switch terminals? All 3? Just hots? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    • @DENedbalek
      @DENedbalek 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      3 phase motor = 3 hot connections. If the motor turns the wrong direction, switch any two of the connections. You should have Line 1 (L1), Line 2 (L2), and Line 3 (L3). All are 120 volt measured to ground.

      Thanks guys, my first experience with 3 phase, and relatively new to 220v wiring. Heres another one, what do i use to clean the inside of the motor, what can i use to lube it and what are any precautions i should know about regarding cleaning and lubing the motor? Thanks again!!

    • @DENedbalek
      @DENedbalek 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chris, replace the bearings using sealed (not shielded) bearings (around 10$ each), then no lube is needed. As for cleaning, 1) do not mess with the windings (the copper coils) which are covered in lacquer. The lacquer is the insulation and must not be damaged. All other parts can be cleaned using WD-40, mineral spirits, or a soapy wet rag. Or just wipe out with a clean dry rag, it depends on the kind of material your are trying to clean out of the motor housing. Be sure to dry thoroughly before reassembly. There are a number of good TH-cam videos on motors and repairs.
