I’ve put 160+ hours into Rebirth and I legitimately cannot give it anything less than a 9.5.
The sheer amount of quality content (story, gameplay, side quests, mini games…etc) is too well done that I don’t think any of the issues marring the story can overshadow just how massive this game is. The gameplay loop is so well done, and even the side quests feel like main quests.
I’ve beaten the game a few days ago so I’ve had time to sit on my thoughts, and I’ve landed on the fact that it’s one of the most robust and content filled games ever made. Even when you compare it to the Witcher 3, it’s even more well done.
I seriously cannot stress enough, if you have a PS5 and you like action RPGs, this is the best action RPG ever made. The devs put so much love and care into it I cannot deny them that.
I give it a 9.5/10, and the only reason is because the ending. I won’t spoil anything, but the ending was messy to say the least.
Edit: one last thing, how could I forget, the soundtrack is the best soundtrack in a video game for me. It truly is incredible.
"There's not much story after this" nope, dead wrong. Most of the story happens after where Rebirth stops.
I really disliked Blessing‘s notion that games normally have to stick to one gameplay and that deviation from that results normally not in a good game. I miss games like FF7 that surprise you every now and then with new mini games and gameplay. And I think that the success of Yakuza/LikeaDragon and It takes two shows that games with such a variety of gameplay styles can be great and successful.

i respectfully disagree with Blessing's opinion on that as well but i'm not mad about it. I'm glad he likes what he likes and I like what I like. and i love finding the things in between that i have in common with people who don't share my own views. gives me perspective and reminds me that my opinion is not the only one that matters. great discussion overall!

Depends, some games do have a bit too much filler/walking simulator. Spiderman 2 felt like it had a bit too much for my liking. The deaf girl spray paint mission is an example. A few I don't mind, but at the point I was annoyed 😅

@@bluex610 I'll back you up here. If you want to get the platinum, you have to do it. I have the platinum in all three of the insomniac spidey games. Maybe it ruined my experience some.. but Spider-man 2 felt too bloated. I felt that way about the first game, but holy crap 2 made me feel better about 1 lol. Miles Morales is still my favorite so lean and awesome. And that game makes you beat it twice to get the plat and still felt like less of a slog lmao.

Which is why I was interested in his opinion. Remake is the only FF game and only JRPG that i have ever connected with, so it is relevant to my experience.

Well, 105 hours in, still on Chapter 12, it’s safe to say I’m enjoying it. Hopefully we still get a spoilercast at some point.
A HUGE part of the OG game is the disconnect of exactly what Bless was talking about, "Why are we overlooking what's going on here?" and it resolves in the end. WHOA BABY that 3rd game!

My thoughts exactly. It's very rare you see a review embargo lift a full week before release. They were confident.

towers were on the trail. you rarely NEED to go out of your way to unlock them. and they just highlight the Chadley tasks whose entire design is to get you to explore each corner of the map they worked hard to designed. maybe there were a little too many but they are optional- if you don't want to do them or they bother you, just don't do them- and the rewards were great. took a lot of time but didn't feel like a waste.
Yeah this is one of those game i'm not gonna gain much from a review, I know I like the gameplay so i'm going in for the story and that can't really be discussed without spoilers
I really think the original FF7 is best enjoyed by taking your time. Roger mainlining it in 40 hours and having the lowest score of the group makes sense, but it does sound like playing the minigames and exploration will make the experience so much better, as it did in the original.
Yeah, lets make excuses for a game none of us have played. Filler content should only add onto a great game, not make the game. I'm sure you'll cream your pants over this game when you play it, but Roger's experience is still valid.

Just beat the game and still haven’t been able to stop playing it and I agree with Tim here this game is incredible I loved it and it’s definitely one of my favs of all time now for sure
I think Tim shines here. Especially with his reserved way of speaking and interacting with the others. Everyone else constantly talking over eachother and cutting eachother off was slightly annoying in this. I get it for the bit sometimes. Or for certain situations. But this entire episode felt like people doing their best to be heard the most. Cutting eachother off and talking over eachother. Love KF. Keep it up otherwise.

Hmmmm I just finished the game but I don’t really agree with Blessing’s criticism on the plot considering that it’s part 2 of a trilogy. Still, it is a phenomenal game.
Also, why are these people SO negative?! Talk more about what you loved from the game please if you're going to give it a high score. Like even Roger who gave it a 3/5 made it sound like he thinks the game is really a 2/5 because he only talked about the negatives.
Does this game have the Fort Condor minigame from the Intermission DLC? I never got into it in the OG FFVII but got really hooked on the new version of it that Yuffie plays in that DLC.

Mini games were a huge part of the original.
I'm curious overall how people new to the franchise with remake will feel about the minigames. Seems like so many fans of the original are excited for that, but I can see why newer folks could see it as "filler".
@@tangentkatz FF7 was a variety game. It deliberately did not have a consistent gameplay loop. Yes its filler, but it also breaks up monotony of repetition. it's a double-edged sword. You could design a game thats just combat and story. but youre likely going to need a lot more breaks.

Right you can tell these dont seem to know your not going to get any closure in this chapter of the game. Closure is coming in the next game. I dont get why people cant accept that.
I just don’t think they fully understand what the game is about… Kinda Funny is a little wishy washy with there games and what they like and what know about. I say all this but Imran knows his stuff. Go check out Easy Allies with Maximillion if you want an in depth review and analysis. It blow this out of the water.

I played Episode intermission and ff16 recently to get ready for this game, and I vastly prefer the FF7R system to the more real time system of FF16

There are minigame specific control options in the settings. Even in the demo.
Blessing " 4 out of 5 " also Blessing , " favorite game of all time" and tells us several things that are great with this game. He is always so wishy washy with his explanations its unreal. The face of video games?
Roger, at this point in the original game, the player has all the same reservations you have. That makes me feel good about how things are going.
From what he was saying, it sounds like there is a certain moment that drops in the original that doesn’t land quite the same here. IYKYK

Can someone tell me where the hate came from for 16? I thought it was a really good installment. Different, but good. MUCH better than 15
Shallow combat, they removed elemental affinities aswell as buffs/debuffs so theres a lot less strategy involved. And the mission structure is incredibly tedious. Between MSQ you can just be made to ping pong between fast travel points to talk to npc's with no interesting gameplay to break it up.
It's a lot more apparent on a subsequent playthroughs, but id easily spend 15 mins skipping dialogue on boring missions and fast travelling just to get things moving again. Disastrous pacing in that respect.
I liked the game a lot, and the highs are so high, but a lot of it drags between those moments
"I'm ending this game like this character sucks and now I have to wait years???" I'm guessing Blessing hasn't played FF14 before and met Alphinaud.

The game is advertised as a remake of an old game. If you can't tell a story on it's own merits (without NEEDING knowledge of the original AND Crisis Core), then you've failed to tell a good story.
@@grantlawrence4600it’s unfortunate but in order to fully appreciate this game and the subsequent sequel, it is almost an absolute must to play the original , because although the name says “remake” and they love to advertise newcomers are welcomed, it is technically a sequel, that doesn’t mean that they failed in the story it just means that they failed in giving context, to which is why they didn’t say that they were lost with the characters, just not sure why they should care, i have noticed that a lot of individuals who play remake do subsequently end up playing the original which is i believe a must.

I’m so glad to hear that there’s more fort condor. I became obsessed with fort condor in intermission and I was so upset there wasn’t anymore. I agree that there should be a spin off or mobile version of it.
Minigames was a huge part of the original and the mandatory ones dont really require you to win or do well so im not sure what the complaint is.
This is one of the hardest plats ever. The final VR brawler and the final 3 super hard Vr fights are ridiculous.
Props on Tim addressing all of the sponsorship stuff in detail. As long as you guys are transparent about being sponsored I don't see how there is a problem.
It just makes it difficult to trust what they are saying... Could also be why Blessing kept talking in circles when trying to give his "review".
Tbh it's embarrassing that they took that sponsorship and it's a big hit to their credibility.
When FF7 Remake released nearly every reviewer said the same thing about the story, but as time went on fans and content creators analyzed the nuances of the story are realized everything makes sense and nothing was confusing or convoluted. Lets wait and see a week after release
I'm only 30 seconds in, but I like how iconic that line from the Brave trailer became. I always thought it was just one of the many inside jokes I had with my brother, but nah, a bunch of people remember that line. Anyway now to watch the rest of the podcast
The way everyone is talking about Rebirth really does make it sound like the Infinite Wealth to Remake's Like A Dragon and i cannot believe the weird synergy between these two franchises and I'm so freaking happy about it. I said this on KFGD comments and I'll say it again:

Not the lead reviewer here though - Bless is (which doesn't feel right for me imo given its a Final Fantasy game). But I understand why Tim isn't lead reviewer given his explanation, it's about as well as they could handle it after being sponsored by Rebirth in the lead up. Blessing saying he doesn’t like Cloud is very interesting, considering he’s easily my favorite video game character of all time, his story is extremely powerful to me. Of course all that comes in part 3 tho lol
Cloud is a flawed character. He has clear vices. That's what makes him great! He's a shade of gray. You know who I don't love? Zack (at least how he is presented in Crisis Core). Zack is a 1-dimension, tropey noble hero archetype with NO flaws. That is not good writing, imo.
Most people don't like him, I love him. I felt in the minority on that.
I can understand not liking before the reveal.
Totally agree - it's usually people who do not even try to understand Cloud's character and how complex he is. Whilst I feel the devs have sidelined Cloud a bit in order to emphasise other characters, he is still a brilliant main protagonist and does not deserve the unjustified criticism that he often gets.

Feigning ignance of a game being the 2nd in a trilogy just to nitpick things you didnt get immediately renders your opinion moot...
I loved this game when I started it, I would've given it a 9.5/10 especially around Junon. I did do all the world intel, side quests & mini-games when they were presented to me, so while I understood that Costa del Sol's forced minigames did mess up the pace, it didn't trump me too much. and like Tim said, I really did love the vibe of our gang traveling these lands together, it really did feel like an actual journey. But as we neared the end of the game, I went from loving the game to just liking it.
The fact that mini-games & side quests were two distinct things until the very end, where the final sidequest is to get a higher score than the Gold Saucer high score at all of its minigames was a terribly dumb decision. That should've been a minigame thing alone, not part of a sidequest. The ending of the game was weird, yes, but also by the end, as Bless said, Cloud started acting so weird (and yes I know what it is, I played the OG) but no one really calls him out on it. The game just becomes Cloud doing something so out of his usual character, the other party members watch on with fear or shock and then they're like "Are you okay?" to which Cloud goes "..... Yeah, I'm fine." and they're like "Cool! Let's move on." and then this happens a couple of times. Cloud unfortunately doesn't have much growth in this game, whereas all of the other characters do. My final score is probably a 8.5/10. It's still a good game, but it started to veer off.
Oh yeah, as a final note: I also really like Queen's Blood, I beat that minigame and even did the optional Gold Saucer Survival Mode matches. I'm not a fan that I didn't get a legit reward at the end of it. No PSN trophy, no EXP, no combat item, no weapon, nothing. I'm not super mad about it, but I do kinda wish they tossed in something for having seen it to the end.

@@SirKupoNutNo plat needed for me. I got 60 collectibles for Johnny's inn and got the trophy for the 60, and that was good enough for me. 81% trophy completion.

It's interesting how we can complain about there being too much stuff in the open world but when there isn't, we complain about it being too bare. Are we never happy? lol
No one complains about having too much to do. The problem is that sometimes content that should be optional, isn’t. I do think there are some people who do not like lots of content, but they are in a very small minority. Especially since games cost $70 nowadays. But for the most part, I agree with some of the tales that pacing needs to be better, and they should only include minigames if they truly relate to journey the characters go through.

I’m in a weird place with this Remake trilogy because Final Fantasy is far and away my favorite video game franchise of all-time. BUT I never played VII. I grew up playing IX as my favorite and I never went backwards until I was an adult, in which I’ve only played IV and VI as entries prior to IX.
I don’t have context for anything regarding Final Fantasy VII outside of the most spoiled spoiler in video game history, obviously. So, I went into Remake not really knowing what to expect and loved it *except* for the ending, which I kinda hated. I felt like it turned into Kingdom Hearts-type of nonsensical storytelling with Fate and multiple timelines and so on. I still thought it was a great game overall, but I was burned by the ending.
That’s why I’m a bit shocked by Roger being in a relatively similar position saying that he loved Remake’s ending, but disliked Rebirth’s ending for feeling left in the dark. I’m kinda just confused how he didn’t feel that same way with Remake’s ending, and it makes me even more curious about wtf happens in Rebirth’s ending lol.
You should play the OG VII because Remake was a sequel and not a remake. You won't understand the story otherwise, and there are far more big spoilers in the OG game than just the death of a beloved character
I just cant take blessing reviews seriously when he runs his own points in circles and ends up with moot points the majority of the time
It's the downfall of this format if you don't have carefully constructed notes and specific beats planned out. Otherwise an hour long + podcast review is just gonna turn into a yap session

@@phillystevesteak6982 The whole they left things unanswered take, it a trilogy. YOu dont go watching a tv show or movie saying aww man they didnt complete everything in this episode or movie, so why do that in a game that we have known for years is going to be a trilogy, its a dumbass take.
I love how Tim can have many complaints but still gives the game a 5/5 😅
That's fair, but let's remember, a 5/5 doesn't mean perfect, it just means a game they really love. Tim having loads of nitpicks and negatives is valid, just as his love for it is.

I'm gonna have to disagree with Imran's clone. I've seen alot of people play Remake in the last 2 months and I've not seen anyone who didn't really wind up invested in the characters. Some people were definitely confused by the characters and I think every one of them said "wtf was that a cat" during the plate drop cut scene, but I don't think you need the OG to feel that Remake is a very strong and compelling game, even if the storyline is a little whacky at times.
I'd say regarding Cloud and Sephiroth. In the OG game Cloud was a dick for more than half the game. They did a way way better job in Remake and Rebirth of slowly peeling away the asshole layer, and sure he still is dismissive and rude at times, but by at least the last quarter of Remake he's begun to change. Sephiroth is barely fleshed out at all in the OG beyond sort of cartoon villain status and some random scenes of motivation. In Remake and the Rebirth demo we are presented with a more fully realized Sephiroth. We still don't have the full picture,

Decided to hold off on buying this for now. I already have games I need to catch up on or finish.
*The Empire Strikes Back, The Two Towers, Fallen Kingdom* were all critically divisive on arrival, espeically how they ended without actually ending at all, and each is now seen as a masterpiece. i've no doubt *Rebirth* will be looked back on in the same way once the story is complete.
this shit is already seen as a masterpiece and better than the first. i don't think its gonna change the minds of people who already don't like it though

Once barret kicked in with his opinion I was eased. I never really gelled with remake, like it was fine. So hearing this gives me hopes
This feels like when Bless gave Street Fighter 6 a 4 because of some minor quibbles at the time of release. I think he would give that game a 5 now lol
