    Toning as you are referring to is actually oxidation that started to form on the raw casting before painting it can also happen years later in humidity and oils from fingers. The castings where never actually polished to shine up the casting for paint but put in a tumbler shaker machine with water and deburring stones to remove the sharp edges. Since the casting was never primered and the candy paint is translucent that is why you can see the oxidation that appears dark. Hong Kong does have a lot of humidity that contributes to this effect. Later years the paint was switched to a solid none transparency to aid in a even paint appearance.

      You are definite correct on the and about the Hong-Kong cars because the humidity when they were shipped if I remember correctly once upon a time they used to put descent bags inside the ship and boxes but since they've gone to Malaysia to gotten even worse if you notice and the paints are different

    It seems pink, gold, and Antifreeze are most susceptible to toning. Very nice collection! $$$

    Hi I've known about your site and videos for quite a while now, but I just subscribed (? I don't know what took so long). I don't mind toning and some small chips because that's all I can afford. By being picky and choosy and seeing in person first I and have managed to acquire a small number of early redlines for $20-30 each. Your website and videos has been SO helpful in learning what to look for and what to avoid. Thanks a lot! Now if I could just win the lottery...

    Informative video Dave. I learn something new everyday about the magic Mattel made 50 years ago.

      The key is to make sure you pay according to the true condition. In perfect condition the Pink Continental could bring $300 to $400 but with a large spot most likely the value would drop by half and the time it would take to resell increases dramatically. So be careful not to pay for perfection if you are not getting it. BTW when you see a car on eBay take the photos they post and put them in Photoshop or similar and use the "negative" feature. You can see flaws magnified when you do this. Try it and let me know what you think. Thanks for watching!

    Thanks for your videos. I love those Hot Wheels but can't afford them ! Where do you get those plastic cases you use?

    Personally seeing loose redlines with flaws isn’t too bothersome because they will all have some form of toning, chipping, or some other problem. You can get cars that are sooo close to perfect but they all have a flaw somewhere

      It reminds me of one to one scale collector cars, If it's still in good original condition a little wear is, in some ways a sign of respect.with hot wheels some have had toning from day one you just got to figure out if your going to except it or not!

    Put them in preservation plastic so it doesn't tone more.

    You can’t be that critical of the cars they are old and if the paint is nice really takes no value from the car in my opinion. Pitting is an issue. I do restorations. These cars are beautiful and a piece of history

      My customers expect me to be critical and to deliver to them Redlines that are consistently better than expected. That is just what happens because I have been a Redline specialist for over 30 years and a collector for 52 years. Thanks for watching!

    Some of the toning came with the cars Brand New. I have SEVERAL cars that I have had since new that have an almost completely different color hood than the rest of the car; like a yellow Custom Continental with a ''Lime'' colored hood.

      I would say I have almost every one I ever wanted. But that is not good enough so I am looking for more. Just the other day 900 new hot wheels in two boxes showed up here from HotWheelsCollectors.com

    Also the more you touch the car, the more toning you'll find.

    • @toycarcollector
      @toycarcollector  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Actually you cannot feel the toning! Lol. Toning is not cased by touching since the paint protects the metal. Under the paint the polished metal turns dark due to damp conditions. If you put your redlines in a basement, garage or attic the wild swings in temperature will tone the cars. If you live somewhere that is humid that will cause toning. A local collector years ago built a hot wheels room in his pole barn. The cars that were nice when he bought them turned badly in just a year. Keep your cars in a dry temperature environment to keep them nice. Now if your fingers are acidic and you are touching the bare metal on the bottom that is not good. But most collectors won't be around to see that most likely. 😮

    I would rather own a toned car redline that i can find at a reasonable price than not own one at all. If its the car im looking for. Same for chips and scratches etc.

    These cars are fifty plus years old, does toning matter? Absolutely not

    • @toycarcollector
      @toycarcollector  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well it does matter to folks who collect and have to give you a lot of money for them. Collectors love all Hot Wheels but the cash vale is determined by condition and toning is a big deal in the price. A car with no toning is twice the value as one with toning. Pink cars in particular suffer from tons of toning so a pink with no toning would bring 4 or 5 times as much as a toned one. Again we love all Redline Hot Wheels its just the ones with no toning are much more valuable when selling.
