    I collect since 2010. I started collecting because I was a car enthusiast. I love pre-world war luxurious classic cars, big semi-trucks, emergency vehicules, exotics and muscle cars! This hobby is fun because at 1/64 scale you can pretty much get any kind of vehicule you want without breaking the bank (well, unless you look for very sought after cars or expensive vintage models like redlines). Something impossible if you collect 1/18 cars. I know most of my collection isn't gonna be worth a lot of money, but I don't collect for money, I collect because of my passion for cars! :) The key is simple : buy what you like and makes you happy, and what your budget can afford you're in bussiness. And if somehow one day some pieces in your collection are valuable and rare, that's a plus!
    Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this subject Mike!

      I’m 37 now, I collected for probably 15+ years, and within the last year I have pretty much quit because of the greed in the secondhand market along with many encounters I’ve had with greedy old rude men who act like it’s heroin to find a stupid children’s toy in a grocery store. I have quite a few stories over the past couple years, but it completely killed the joy of collecting for me. Now I have thousands of these cars that are either collecting dust in my storage unit or I hand them out to kids. I now find more joy in taking some unopened treasure hunts to kids in my neighborhood or young family or friends and explaining to them what treasure hunts are and then giving them a handful of them to either keep or open and play with. I guess I still found a way to get some happiness out of my collection but there’s people out there that are downright disgusting over these things and it completely killed it for me personally. I do enjoy telling those greedy old men about how I hand out my treasure hunts to kids now so they can rip them open and play with them though lol.

  • @rjwalker4153
    @rjwalker4153 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    He's exactly right. As a hobby, you should collect whatever way makes you happy. That's what I've always done. If they go up in value, that's icing on the cake. There always seems to be a lot of discussion on loose versus sealed in package hot wheels. Many of mine are neither though. I used to open my hot wheels, but kept the package to put them back into. So I have quite a few (Including vintage) that are nice condition in their original package, but it's been opened. I would like to hear his or others opinion on that. Also, regarding what hot wheels will go up in value: With so many collectors and dealers saving and hoarding newer hot wheels in their package, (which wasn't done as much in redline era ) , I don't think most of the newer mainlines will go up in value much except possibly treasure hunts. But neo classics, 68 series, redline club, classics series, cool classics, Larry's Garage , Boulevard, limited edition's, and other series that were aimed at the adult collector with lesser destribution I can see going up. Some already have. Whether the vintage redlines will continue to go up as they have I am uncertain. As the baby boomers age, logic dictates that prices on some of those will level off or drop. Unless younger collectors come in and take their place. Would like to hear others opinons on that too..

    I collect because I like cars, and I mainly buy the ones based on real cars. Some of the fantasy cars look cool and are unique, so I'll pick them up now and then.
    I don't seriously look for the Super Treasure Hunts. I could happen upon one day, but I buy the cars I like and cars I see on the roads.
    Customizing is fun, too. I just got into that.
    I've had Hot Wheels (opened and unopened) since I was a kid. I'm 24 now. They're fun cars. Make collecting/playing what you want. Yes, there are rare ones worth a bunch of money, but they are needles in the haystack. Do what you want, have fun, and OPEN SOME! Play with your TOY CARS! :)

  • @nickthetoycollector3360
    @nickthetoycollector3360 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Throwing my 2 cents in:
    If you want a 'chance' at making a potential profit in collecting Hot Wheels, always go for the vintage stuff. Late 60s, 70s & up to mid 80s era HW and their sets, still in their package (the better the condition, the better in potential sales) and rarity, all contribute to how much you can sell or buy them.
    There is absolutely a way to make money in this hobby, but it's a lot of hard work at the end of the day, and not many have the means or capability to make it their full time job.

    • @rjwalker4153
      @rjwalker4153 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah that's a good bet. The vintage stuff has only gone up over the years. Some prices are so high I almost wonder if they've peaked. Some of the baby boomers are dying off now, will that make less demand in the future or will younger collector's fill the void ?

  • @SynsytyCustoms

    I agree, we get into this hobby (most the time after we stopped as a child or young man) to enjoy what we are doing. Customizing is something I like, some like my work and I’m sure some don’t. I had people say “hey you can sell this for good money” and I laugh and say “well, maybe to you, how much you want to give me?” I do it because I like it. Back into the hobby now fir a little over two yrs. my collection is 500+ of a very specific kind “what I like”. My son’s collection is over 2000 of “everything he can get his hands on” but that’s what he likes. Good collecting to all of you and pick up one of Mike’s books, it will make collecting that much more fun and I guarantee you’ll buy another, there’s that much information in them!

  • @jarc02

    Mike I used to own a NASCAR collectibles store. People would buy cars or not buy cars based on some guide book. I always told people use the book for insurance value if you insure the collection. Years ago a man saw me sorting through a dump bin at K-B Store Store and asked me if the cars should stay in the package. I told him its an individual thing but if a child finds it and wants to play with it then let him/her open it -" It's a toy!" - let the kids have fun with it. Overall, if you want to invest buy Apple stock or a mutual fund. Habbies should not be investments. They are meant to be fun so make the most of it and don't worry about value.

    What I really liked about this video is, Mike hammers home the idea that there is no right or wrong way to collect. I have been guilty of questioning why people keep their cars in packets. But like Mike says, the cars are more valuable depending on how you want to collect them. I always open mine, because for me, the fun is racing them, not so much displaying. But some people like displaying, and they do look cooler in their packets. There is no right or wrong!

    I've started slowly collecting various diecast cars. If it's a car I find interesting, I'll pick it up. The whole supply and demand situation is exactly what happened to the comic book industry boom and bust of the 90s and early 2000's. Same with Beanie Babies ect.

    I am going to be 53yrs old and I still buy Hotwheels & Matchbox cars lol, My wife & I started collecting in 95 when the 4 cars series started, It was about the hunt to get all the cars in the series, never got into it for the $ though. I don't even know how many cars we have and haven't been buying much for the last 8 or 10yrs but there are cars I just have to have when I see it lol. I know I have cars that are worth $ but most I would be lucky to get a quarter apiece for them. I always liked the Johnny Lightning Cars, even as a kid they were my favorites and I have a lot of the big sets they had in the 90's.

    There was a time where i couldn't open *any* of my carded Hot Wheels. But having opened various multipacks in the last year or so, i found out that i enjoyed opening cars and viewing them from all angles. For the mainlines at least, i try to have one loose and one in the package: That way i can keep track at what year each model came out. But it's important to write down and make lists of what you collect, it's impossible to remember hunderds or thousands of cars. And there's no right or wrong in the way *you* collect really. Each one has his/her own way. Thanks for this video.

    For you being a historian I can understand why you would want to keep them in the packaging. I open everything and only have duplicates if I buy a bulk lot at Goodwill, thrift store or garage sale. I belong to a few Die cast groups on Facebook and this always pops up and the answer is always buy what you like don't worry about making money off of a dollar car. Great video!

    I started buying them to save in the package when I was about 12. I opened some for fun, but I didn't have to make them all go around the track, so I didn't have any problem saving them in the package so they wouldn't get scratched up. Even though they haven't turned out to be a good investment, I don't regret it.

      I only wish I was as smart as you as a kid, because I began collecting in 1968 when they first came out. I was 10 then and I had almost all the early ones from the first three years. Can you imagine if had saved them all in their original packages ? I'd be rich today. I played with them, and raced them, but I knew enough to be gentle with them and not have them crash. However I never thought of keeping the packages until later when I resumed collecting again as an adult. Luckily, I still have some of my childhood hot wheels and most remained in nice condition.

I also am a collector because I just love cars, trucks that look cool, futuristic or historic. I concur with you that Hot Wheels also brings happiness out of me, and they have been consistent from the 1968 sweet sixteen. I know you would know these. Some I keep in the package 📦 and others I too play with, race with and just enjoy shining the out of package ones with diecast metal liquid wax. That keeps them looking like they are still in the package and it makes the Hot Wheels cars finger print and dust resistant. It's my hobby! I started a Hot Wheels Club in a local private school in NC. Its been successful for about two years. Had to put it on pause until the epidemic blows over. Love them Hot Wheels! Thanks for sharing.

    This is really "another world of collecting". Thank you for showing this. 2 years ago, I started to buy Hot Wheels (not sure if it calls "collect") because I heard that so-called JDM cars are very valuable. So i tried to get everything what I see with letter "J" and some other series. I got near 40+ cars , part of them opened , part sealed. Recently, I tried to sell them , making bit money, asking only 2.50 for each. Disappointingly, zero interest in them. Either people collect some other ways, or some other cars. I probably should've buying retro muscle cars instead.....

    Awesome to have seen this video made even though i didnt expect it. he does give a lot info and clear as can be for anyone to understand. it like anything else people collect, it all supply and demand. like with comics, funko and anything else, if a lot are made then the value is what u are willing to pay for it at time. i by chance have doubles of cars and some i dont. i may never sell any and keep in pack and rest can give to fam kids to see them enjoy having something may not get later. so really awesome and cool he made things as clear as possible as to how he does things and to how the cars have any value in pack or lose anytime. i know i use to play with one as kid but think lost it for any reason later. have so many now and different ones for any reason.

    I just started collecting since we couldnt afford it when I was a kid, I usually pick the ones I like, I do TH everytime I visit toystores 😋. I already have 15 or 20 of basic cars and one with flame in circle.

    I used to own like 30 cards as a kid (I mean, it's a small amount in comparison), as I grew up I just got rid of them. I regret not handing the down to other people or keeping them. My little cousin loves Hot Wheels more than anything in the world and I wish I would have saved them for him, as an adult now I can appreciate the work put into these little cars...

    My question for you is how do you track your collection? I'd like to avoid duplicates if possible

    If I want to keep a car in mint condition I'll get two of them. Only certain ones I won't take out of the package.

    If it costs more than $.99 or the cost of a premium, I'm not buying it. Can't believe the 1995 TH Camaro. Found mine at Kay Bee in 1995 for $1.19 and I thought I paid to much lol.

    Back in 2001 I moved out of my apartment and gave a friend of mine my collection of over 200 Hotwheels still in their packages. I had just gotten divorced and didn't have room to store them. I would like to start collecting again some day. Thank you.
