Yesterday. I Met this Amazing man. So nice, i did not want to disturb him. He Sat next to me and when i asked if he was The Alan Moore. then Began a conversation spanning over an hour about the industry, politics and this great great guy. he took a picture with me and signed my dissertation material. based on 1968 race relations act. I only got into british internal politics at a young age because of V for Vendetta. LEGEND
The SPERM t-shirt was actually designed by friend and long-time working partner Rick Veitch. They worked together on titles like Swamp Thing, Miracleman, 1963, Supreme and Tomorrow Stories. Sometimes Moore also wears a black t-shirt with these symbols "@#★!" which is another t-shirt by Rick Veitch referencing the character Dr. Blasphemy from his mini series Bratpack. I just thought I would mention this as Moore is clearly a fan of Veitch who doesn't get nearly enough attention in my opinion.
One Monday at the end of a long, exhausting Dragon Con, after working and partying the whole weekend, I packed up my artist table and took a zombie-like stroll through the remains of the dealer room. When I returned to my girlfriend, she asked me what I'd found. I blearily presented that shirt, but couldn't recall buying it, let alone my reasons for doing so. I read Bratpack when it came out, but I can't say it made much of an impression on me. No offense to Rick Veitch, but I preferred Alan's brand of conscientious questioning of comic and other hero tropes to Rick's mean-spirited send-up. It might have been the homophobia that put me off. Regardless, I still have the shirt, though I can't think of an appropriate place to wear such a gleefully inappropriate article of clothing.
@@rottensquid Thanks for sharing. That’s a fun personal story. Brat Pack is not my favorite Veitch work - needless to say, it can be a little… much. Its prequels The Maximortal and the still ongoing Boy Maximortal are among my favorite comics of all time though. With those as context, Brat Pack is easier to swallow. Not sure what to comment about the supposed homophobia. You’re not the first to make that observation. I would be interested to hear what aspect of it you may have found troubling in regards to that. It’s interesting to note, I suppose, that Veitch had contributed art to “Artists Against Rampant Government Homophobia” just two years before that.
I find Alan Moore to be a very wise man, far more enlightened than many other people out there putting themselves forward. I'd like to meet him one day and have an epic conversation about stuff like this.
I was never into comics as a child or an adult but I find Alan Moore fascinating. Im assuming from the video's I've seen over the last week his adoration for Northampton means he still lives here? (Multiple times he's said he loves the place was born here and will die here). I've been living in Northampton for the last seven years- stunned that nobody has ever mentioned the man! I admire his deep knowledge on the history of the place, I'd love to meet the man. Maybe I'll bump into him some day??
From what I understand, yeah, he still lives there, and is active in the arts scene. His magazine Dodgem Logic is kind of Northampton in miniature. But I do assume we're speaking of Northampton in England?
Love this - Alan Moore FTW and LOVE his tshirt. WANT. But from a slightly pedantic video production standpoint, can you not blast out the loud music at the start then have a really quiet interview? I had to run for the volume control as I wasn't alone...and then a few seconds later switch it back up! Same levels, please.
I can picture the smarmy face in whoever it was that asked the last question, typical kind of question by self diagnosed "rationalists" and "defenders of science" (more like scientism) , followed by a humble look after Alan Moore's eloquent response.
Cool vid, but it'd be really helpful for those of us wanting to listen whilst doing other things to hear the question being asked before Mr. Moore responds.
Very true, this mostly happen during the Middle Ages during the when the Catholic Church(Half pagan, half-Christian) and Papacy were running things, they even slowed down education, only the rich learned how to read and write, they added burdens on the people, and the people just numbly submitted themselves to them :(
'Sperman' LOL! Alan Moore knows the score, and he has the best T-shirt collection on the planet. I believe the shirt's art is by comic artist and Moore friend and Swamp Thing collaborator Rick Vietch. Larry Niven would love the "Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenix" reference.
Since everyones preaching in the comments I would also like to tell everyone that if what alan's talking about interests you check out Alan's great comic "Promethea" for a guided step by step journey into magic and the occult and you. God bless you. And do yourself a favor and read "Prometheus Rising" by R.A. Wilson.
Deep inside of a parallel universe It's getting harder and harder To tell what came first Under water where thoughts can breathe easily Far away you were made in the sea Just like me Christ I'm a sidewinder I'm a California king I swear it's everywhere It's everything ----RHCP
@Jeffersonwazright You must travel to a proudly or largely secular nation like the U.K. or Japan, or do as I do living in Ireland, staunchly defend reason and science and information, and watch the growing move towards secularisation.
@Soso21259 For that statement you mean you don't have a moral compass and the only thing in the way for you to commit crimes is the fear of punishment?
It's the same thing as Sartre's 'Man is condemned to be free' (free-will is a state of determinism). But 'freedom' in itself is a relative term, and of course that there is limitation even in Alan's system: there are places where imagination won't go; especially in the realm of science. Many of those religious systems he decries, affirm themselves in providing man true and unbound freedom. But they define it according to its worldview. But then again, you can only go about it that way.
i was just talking with someone about dogmas; after belief is corporealized its dogmatized.....belief is not factual but dogma is.......i live with dogmatists (realists or scientists all my life)
No, I just find him to be particularly wise and that I would like to have a lengthy discussion about a subject that is of interest to us both. I do not consider myself to be above anyone else as far as knowledge or wisdom is concerned, this would be arrogant and I would look a fool if proven wrong.
i think if he had said that all superhero books after watchmen from dc and marvel have been pure shit that would be true, but there have been good comics since then like sandman... he was exaggerating but only a bit
I really do not like the term "rationalist" being thrown around here. It almost comes off as being voided of any real meaning, pretty much a term used to validate one's ideas when evidence it lacking. I mean, when someone throws out "edge of the universe", I have a sudden urge to slam my head on my desk. I think his mindset is fitting and probably helpful in the comic book field but yeah... he focuses more on the less basic than answering the more basic which is why he throws out these ideas.
With Arnold Schwarzenegger Jesse Ventura and Donald Trump former entertainers holding important offices of politics in the world does it come to mind that the Jester is in charge of the Court and the King is down at the bar talking philosophy with wise men.
@Jeffersonwazright im like this, and my family thinks im fried off drugs but they just dont understand true open mindedness im only ignorant where ignorance is needed
I thought you were disputing the 6,000 year thing. No, he didn't say exclusively. Those were my words. My point was that America is not the only place where fundamentalism exists, and we are certainly not an extreme example of religious intolerance.
@kamonn Actually the bible teaches that we are not limited and that we should live Extraordinary life's... but sadly your are right, the problem is religion and their wrongful interpretations of the bible... and in turn have turn many people like you away. Two of my favorite bible teachers are Joyce Meyer and John Bevere, If interested check them out
People as much as I respect peoples opinions and listen to other peoples thoughts It does not mean I agree and it doesn't mean he's right people be your own truth study on your own !! People stop being sheep that fallow the irrational and instead connect with your own mind and let God work in your life ! this man is not smarter than you and he doesn't know more than you be people of true knowledge which is knowledge that is obtained by self study God Bless You All
@Slamdumb020 When you ask a religious person that, they would claim their 'religion' is THE way of life and not a religion. There's not many nonreligious people that believe in God so that question wouldn't apply to the majority.
Here's the problem, Alan. The axiom that imagination must be absolute and totally unbound and without check is already a ligament/limitation: you can't go beyond nor below it - it is dogma. You got yourself a religion.
I cant say hes right on any level, I know the OH MY FUCKING CHRIST! Thing with Watchmen, but that book just isnt my thing, Ive enjoyed more of this quote modern shit more than his book, I enjoyed Killing Joke far more than Watchmen infact, but calling everything after his work crap or most of it crap is completely wrong, I wouldnt even put Watchmen in my top 20 comics if I ever did such a thing, I would put the movie as one of the best CBMs though.
Religious fundamentalism is hardly exclusively American. And criticizing religion is easy to do when it suits your purposes; how about when you use supernatural themes to sell your comics, Alan? Ideas themselves can be thought of spiritual things, and science can only explain the how, not the why. Not everyone who believes in a higher power thinks the world was created 6,000 years ago.

Yes
Does anyone have video or sound to share from Moore's contribution to this event?
I was never into comics as a child or an adult but I find Alan Moore fascinating. Im assuming from the video's I've seen over the last week his adoration for Northampton means he still lives here? Does anyone know if there is a recording of the lecture?
So insightful.
I wish Alan were my father.
Only 7 minutes? Why lord, WHYYYY?
I can picture the smarmy face in whoever it was that asked the last question, typical kind of question by self diagnosed "rationalists" and "defenders of science" (more like scientism) , followed by a humble look after Alan Moore's eloquent response.
Cool vid, but it'd be really helpful for those of us wanting to listen whilst doing other things to hear the question being asked before Mr. Moore responds.
if we're a hologram how do you account for emotions and feelings?
Alan is not a Satanist, he's a classical pagan and ceremonial magician
id love to see neil degrasse tyson have a conversation with alan moore.
Degrasse is not worth of such honour, he's a turd.
Who's computers? Who's projector?
Very true, this mostly happen during the Middle Ages during the when the Catholic Church(Half pagan, half-Christian) and Papacy were running things, they even slowed down education, only the rich learned how to read and write, they added burdens on the people, and the people just numbly submitted themselves to them :(

@iomithelegend He said "theory of" and "might be"in the first sentence you genius.
I don't know who Alan Moore is but I'm going to find out b/c I'm in love. ;)
Alan makes sense as usual
@kamonn agreed. Well said.
Alan Moore is really smart, i loved what he did for WATCHMEN, i haven't read V For Vendetta, iv'e seen the film but i bet the novel was way better
Deep inside of a parallel universe

"The problem with religions is that, generally, they develop dogmas which are limitations to thought and are never a good thing"
@fitz06
Yes. Yes it does.
@Jeffersonwazright You must travel to a proudly or largely secular nation like the U.K. or Japan, or do as I do living in Ireland, staunchly defend reason and science and information, and watch the growing move towards secularisation.
Wow. He made Watchmen. Impressive.
Ach...Aint so bad - I hear Seattle is kind of a groovy place (if you aint there already) lol
@Soso21259
For that statement you mean you don't have a moral compass and the only thing in the way for you to commit crimes is the fear of punishment?
@ApiarySociety He´s an anarchist och doesn´t want anyone to lead or follow.

The only people who could be offended by this are the people who expect offense before they watch it.
i think i got a contact high from watching this vid
@Slamdumb020 he belives in the wise words of the buddha
although he is a strong liberal atheist

i think if he had said that all superhero books after watchmen from dc and marvel have been pure shit that would be true, but there have been good comics since then like sandman...
he was exaggerating but only a bit

man, this guy is a fkin genius
cool
The problem with religion is dogma. Once you embrace dogma, you paint yourself into a philosophical corner.
I really do not like the term "rationalist" being thrown around here. It almost comes off as being voided of any real meaning, pretty much a term used to validate one's ideas when evidence it lacking. 3:59 it does say sperm
O.o
So are we just an idea
Our idea of ourselves, effects who we are, just as much as the real world and other people effect who we are.
"Edge of the universe" How can there be an edge of something infinite?
Are you from America? lol
@fitz06 Yyyyep...purchasing.
Such a dogmatic perspective when we exist in a reality where science is a religion and religion is a science.
So were all holograms? SO HOW IS TECHNOLOGY REAL AHHHH!!!
@kamonn Actually the bible teaches that we are not limited and that we should live Extraordinary life's... but sadly your are right, the problem is religion and their wrongful interpretations of the bible... and in turn have turn many people like you away.

Meet me, maybe I'm stupid but at least I'm not religious! Plus I like Alan Moore's work!
@bloopthecat hell yeah, i would like to spend some time inside his acid fueled imagination
@Slamdumb020 When you ask a religious person that, they would claim their 'religion' is THE way of life and not a religion. There's not many nonreligious people that believe in God so that question wouldn't apply to the majority.
I think it's odd that Alan Moore looks like John Dee.
i want a super sperm t-shirt
nothing new here
MUSIC is LUV TH-cam/REGGIEWRITEOUS
Here's the problem, Alan. The axiom that imagination must be absolute and totally unbound and without check is already a ligament/limitation: you can't go beyond nor below it - it is dogma. You got yourself a religion.
He is right. American fundaMENTALists are wrong. They make me laugh.
@fitz06 YEAP! Hahahahaha
I cant say hes right on any level, I know the OH MY FUCKING CHRIST! It´s like listening to Doctor Manhatan talk. Except, with human emotions.
i see why he writes science 'fiction' lol
he smart becouse he got long white beard
(im working on 1 of thease right now ive been a moron UNTIL NOW!)
The idea that you should never meet your heroes should probably be extended to watching TH-cam videos of them.
@snerka- who cares if he is a anarchist, a little persuasion could do the trick! Moore for president!
0:52 - "talked about the idea of living in a computer simulation"
The Matrix talked about this idea 13 years ago.
And Philip K Dick talked about it 42 years ago at a conference. It's all been thought of before, but we can still have insights on old ideas.
i used to be a hologram... but then i took an arrow to the knee

A lot of hate
I think you're going to the wrong places.
I don't believe in any God except Alan Moore.
into the matrix. Neo get your guns!
poor bloke has seen a bit to much LSD and DMT
Love Alan, but falling back on etymology as a route to finding true definitions of words misunderstands language and does not enlighten anything.
@fitz06 Yup it does.
