Looking at it objectively, this shouldn't even be so much of a big debate. I do not see Jamaica earning any individual medal in the 400m, even with the addition of McDonald. So, drop him in the 4x4 and mixed relay pool, where Jamaica has a legitimate chance of earning 2 medals.
I don't think they should consider Rusheen Mcdonald to the 400m pool regardless of his time. He is the national 400m record holder and still have not proven a point when running the rounds . I guess they can put him in the pool for the mixed relay.
Logical argument Shearer. I support your stance. Give McDonald an opportunity to run the individual event. It would be the strongest team with the top two finishers at trials.
Interesting. My view is that rules are a general framework that cannot always apply. If the aim is to put your best athletes forward with the goal of achieving success, then you select the best athletes. End of conversation. Just because you have rules in place doesn’t mean that you are a slave to them. The whole point of the selection process is to establish who the best athletes are. If one of those athletes is determined outside of the process, you go back to the original objective. Finding the best athletes. Success involves flexibility.
Not in agreement with Leighton this time. If the rules were broken in 2008 we may very well not have a Shelly Ann Fraser Pryce today. Everything leighton levy is saying screamsss unethical. He was maybe one of those persons fighting for Veronica Campbell to replace Shelly back in the day. He pissed me off during this entire interview!
The deciding factor is did the athlete satisfy the condition for automatic selection. The IAAF rules clearly states if an athlete compete and DO NOT meet the qualifying standards they don't have the automatic selection.
Extraordinary circumstance or not, although McDonald ran the 3rd fastest time in our history, there are no guarantees. He could also underperform. Likewise, Barnes or Powell could overperform. These decisions can destroy careers. Lest not forget when our beloved Ottey was chosen over Peta-gay Dowdie. If any of you heard of a successful career for Dowdie after that, please let me know.
The Peta-Gaye-Merlene Ottey situation does NOT apply here. Winners DON'T QUIT. The policy for selection is clear-ALL the athletes have to meet the IAAF qualifying standards to be selected.
Pets Gay gave up after the Ottey situation. She won the race and she was removed from the lineup. What would have happened to Shelly if she was replaced because she is an unknown. As an avid track and field fan and someone who is fair and balanced and also someone who generally is aligned with Mr. Levy, I'll have to TOTALLY disagree with Leighton on this. We have two individuals who are ahead of Rasheed on the individual positions and while Javaughn has not made the qualifying standard he is in the top 48 which by rule will still allow him to be at Worlds. It's more than just the ability to make a finals, I think Christopher Taylor made the finals one year and certainly didn't have to run 44.0 to get there, it's all a matter of the draw and what you are running relative to others each round and on the day. It's also about giving others the experience. Now rules/laws are there for a reason and if something is wrong with a rule/law we should make it better. Such change to a rule/law should be made before an incident where said rule/law is being applied. A rule/law that's in place should simply be applied and in some extent interpreted but not changed to suit the situation. All athletes and their teams entering championships understood the rules/law coming in and therefore made decisions based on those rules/laws. It gives everyone the same level playing field in which to operate. These cannot be changed after the fact. For example: There may be an athlete who did everything in their power to get a 3rd place finish knowing the rules and have done everything to prepare to get that spot including travel arrangements, other expenses etc. For that all to be discarded would not be fair. If that athlete knew that they may not be selected after meeting the criteria, said athlete may have made other decisions on whether to even attempt to qualify. Herein is the reason to have a level playing field to operate, hence rules/laws. Btw. Extraordinary situations do sometimes require extraordinary responses. What Rasheed has done is not an extraordinary circumstance that warrant bending the rules. A one of race is different from running round which will be required come Worlds and we have seen this before from Rasheed so this certainly doesn't require an extraordinary response and I know Mr. Levy knows this😊. Great discussion either way. Having said all that - Rasheed will be an insurance in the event the other two athletes don't make the cut, Javaughn falling out of the top listing and the other gentleman falling out of form(injury etc), then Rasheed is the clear 3rd spot choice and that would not infringe on the rule.
If I were part of the JAAA selection panel I'd select Rusheen McDonald for a place on the 4×400 but he wouldn't compete in an individual event. Him cyaa manage the rounds periodt!!
If McDanold is fit and elegable to do the indivual 400 he should run base on experence if not add him to the relsy pool which would put Jamaica closer to the Americans with a possibelity of beating them
i rather have consistent runners over the season, such as sean bàiley and antonio watson running for us, than rusheed mcdonald who is all over the place. and its not a jab at rusheed. heck he holds our national record and is a great runner, but consistency is the big thing here. no consistency means lower chance to perform
The rules are the rules but this situation is different. And he is the National Record Holder. But if I was top 3 at Nationals and they gave my dpot away Id be pissed..lol
Ok my take is put Mcdonald in the individual races, Caz if Usain bolt in his prime didn't run the semi at trials and wasn't in the top 3 for fastest time in the world to get a medical exemption. But he is the national record holder , JAAA would have allow him to run the individual race
Im a bit iffi on this one. Rusheen McDonald is definitely not the most consistent. So i would say, if he drops that time again or even close to it, I support placing him in the flat 400m. I must add though, that he does look different, stronger and better than he has ever looked.
I can’t believe people still think that way after they used Merlene Ottey to crushed Petagaye Downey’s future by not selecting the latter when she beat the former. Also after they wanted to replace SAFP with Veronica in 2008 and SAFP proved them wrong and became the GOAT.
The bloke in the middle needs his head screwed on correctly. What has McDonald done outside his fast time yesterday and his NR 8 yrs ago? NOTHING! Put him on the relay and pick a youngster for the individual spot!
Don't hurt the other youths like that. After the championships in Jamaica, Veronica beat Shelly in Europe. People were saying to replace Shelly with Veronica. LOOK AT SHELLY NOW. LEAVE THE YOUTHS ALONE. PUT MCDONALD IN THE RELAY POOL. NO EXTRAORDINARY SITUATION.
There is nothing in the rules that guarantee that Powell gets the third spot. The rule states that "athletes placing in the 1st to 3rd positions in all events will be selected if they have attained the qualifying standard for the event", Powell does not have the qualifying standard, meaning therefore, the JAAA is within their rights to pick any other Jamaican that has the qualifying standard.
Thats why I know it's going to take everything the other sprinters have to offer, to defeat Shelly ,reason for this ,she'll start is going to catch them off guard 😂😂😂
Rusheen is consistent everywhere and anytime but when it counts at the championships. He's neither good in the individual 400m, and forget about the relays. Give the spot to someone who is promising and shows great potential. Rusheen had his day and never delivered.
I agree with Leighton because we want medals against other countries. Otherwise, only send top medalists in the Trials. Hence, why have a specific Championships to make decisions and then bump a top 3 person off for medical reasons? That person could not withstand the competition when it mattered in the Trials. So we already been breaking the rules of logic.
JAAA, I say stick by the rules because making exceptions will haunt you in the future. If you had followed public sentiments in the past, Shelley Ann Fraser would not have won an Olympic gold medal in 2008. However, if you wish to make amendments to your rules for the future, please do so.
The top three earn there places, Rasheed should bench this one out even if he's the fastest 400m runner for Jamaica this year...what would've happened if he replace the automatic qualifiers and go on to flop himself on the world stage coming in at last, what would've been the conversation then???
Do not be fooled by Rusheen McDonald's 44.03 seconds. He runs a fast time like every eight or so years. He has shown that he cannot sustain a quality race throughout the rounds. He ran the national record in the heats and has not come close to this time till this week. Tell Rusheen to "tek weh himself".
The law should not be a shackle but a general guideline. The law cannot be framed to account for every possible circumstance. Extenuating circumstances is a part of life and should be accommodated when justifiable. The whole objective should be to select your best team. I don't think anything should supersede that basic objective. Even God makes exceptions to his own law because of circumstances.

It's very true just used your common sense and think about if you ran multiple races in a 2 weeks period you would at some point be burned out look at the time shacarri been running then she place 2nd with a 10.9 that says alot yes she had a bad start and julien alfred had an explosive start and she ran hard to the end but won with a 10.8 and I'm not taking nothing from her because she's bn doing well and putting in work and your not going to win them all but win when it matters is more important.
This reminds me of Shelly and Veronica situation. Put him in the relay pool.
Rule is Rule.
I would select him but the rules are the rules and not to be broken. A suh it go
GUYS LEAVE THE SELECTION FOR THE JAAA. DO THE ANNOUNCING.
I see a conflict of interest here, if JAAA contradicts its own rules this could open future disruptions. Careful of precedents.
Ok my take is put Mcdonald in the individual races, Caz if Usain bolt in his prime didn't run the semi at trials and wasn't in the top 3 for fastest time in the world to get a medical exemption. But he is the national record holder , JAAA would have allow him to run the individual race
I hope the JAAA is smart, and do not rob the youngsters of their opportunity.
..Oh what a tangled web Leighton weaves!! I say stick with the rules, lest we start down this slippery slope..
Im a bit iffi on this one. Rusheen McDonald is definitely not the most consistent. So i would say, if he drops that time again or even close to it, I support placing him in the flat 400m.
I must add though, that he does look different, stronger and better than he has ever looked.
Big boy too inconsistent, put him in relay pool
I can’t believe people still think that way after they used Merlene Ottey to crushed Petagaye Downey’s future by not selecting the latter when she beat the former. Also after they wanted to replace SAFP with Veronica in 2008 and SAFP proved them wrong and became the GOAT.
Crush the young lady future in tracks. Think it's Dowdy
The bloke in the middle needs his head screwed on correctly. What has McDonald done outside his fast time yesterday and his NR 8 yrs ago? NOTHING! Put him on the relay and pick a youngster for the individual spot!
There's no selection woe, the spot belongs to Barnes, he has the qualifying time and was also in the final. stop with this nonsense.
Definitely! If Powell can't make the time by the 30th, ZB gets it. Plain and simple
Drop Bug Boy, he just ran well when he want to qualify!!
Doesn't the rule state that if you're ranked within the 50th in the world you're qualified?
@@AnthonyWilsonOlympian that's not in JAAA rules. I quoted the rules earlier.
Thats why I know it's going to take everything the other sprinters have to offer, to defeat Shelly ,reason for this ,she'll start is going to catch them off guard 😂😂😂
These guys should do more research before they come up on national tv!
Too much corruption 😮 put him on the relay
McDonald is a one time performer. He should not be selected for the individual event.
Rusheen is consistent everywhere and anytime but when it counts at the championships. He's neither good in the individual 400m, and forget about the relays. Give the spot to someone who is promising and shows great potential. Rusheen had his day and never delivered.
Rules are Rules it should be a dare to
I agree with Leighton because we want medals against other countries.
Let him run 400 and 4x400 thanks
Yes, but can he produce that time for 3 rounds. Life is not fair. Too bad so sad Mcdonald.
You know what is real track news?? Shericka got beat by ShaCarri twice this season and both times ran her down!! Let's talk about this??😂😂😂😂😂
So let forget the trials if the rules doesn't matter. The rules are the rules
Rusheen McDonald need to be selected for the flat 400m Caz powell and Barnes won't advance
YEAH RIGHT!!!! SHE LOOKED TIRED EH!!!! BUT WHEN SHE NIPPED JACKSON SHE WASNT TIRED???!!! HOW IRONIC!! JAMAICA WE LARGE!!!
The t8me to perform is the trials
Just add Mcdonald to the relay team ❤
Stick to the Rules.
the chemistry has low lows and high highs, memba wha happen to flojo not long after
The top three earn there places, Rasheed should bench this one out even if he's the fastest 400m runner for Jamaica this year...what would've happened if he replace the automatic qualifiers and go on to flop himself on the world stage coming in at last, what would've been the conversation then???
Do not be fooled by Rusheen McDonald's 44.03 seconds. He runs a fast time like every eight or so years. He has shown that he cannot sustain a quality race throughout the rounds. He ran the national record in the heats and has not come close to this time till this week. Tell Rusheen to "tek weh himself".
Fair point. But why attack the athlete in this manner though 🤷♂️
Pick McDonald. That's all.
DONT BRAKE THE RULE IT WILL ENCOURAGE CHEATING BIG TIME
❤
You cannot break the rules it’s simple. You will set a bad precedence in the future and it will create problems in your selection process.
