You can tell the succubus actress was having a really fun time playing the role, I love it when low budget indie movies cast professionals who take their acting seriously.

I always thought she looked like a mix between a Harpy, Siren, and Succubus, unless they were going more for the bird type of Siren. Depending on the lore Sirens are either bird women or fish women who lure men to their death with their song.
VHS is a surprisingly consistent horror series. Not every short is a total winner, but all of them are at least attempting something unique or creative and that alone should be respected.

Funny thing is the first two almost feel connected with how much they build off the horror cliches they feature in each short. The first one feels like each short is about a moral of story or some shit and the second one felt like each was a love letter to a different conspiracy theory (cults, aliens, eldritch tech, etc)
There’s literally no point in saying ‘not all of them are winners’. That’s inherent in the fact that personal opinion exists AND it’s an anthology…

found footage horror really feels like an older cousin of analog horror and it makes me excited to see how analog horror will continue to develop!! we've gotten so much cool stuff from the starting point of blair witch (for found footage), and we can already see how analog horror is blowing up in a similar way.
I'm hoping that _Skinamarink_ starts a trend of (good) analog horror in the mainstream
Found footage is the direct ancestor, and it’s ancestor is campfire tales the newest generations being creepy pastas and now analog horror being the newest
Quite a few analogue horrors contain found footage elements so i’d argue they’re just variants of the Same thing

I started watching these with a friend and now it’s a whole event for the two of us. Even if the majority of the VHS clips are bad, it’s still fun to watch with a friend

Safe Haven from V/H/S 2 has got to be some of the scariest found footage I’ve ever seen, it felt so real and I couldn’t sleep for days after watching it

Amateur night is my favourite too. I was so impressed with the acting of the succubus girl who portrays just that right mixture between creepy and cute.
Though I loved the tragic one of the zombie coming to remember his human origin as well. It seemed like a new take on the whole zombie genre.

Maybe because Gorgeous Vortex wasn't really found footage horror, it was more analog.
I would like to see a psychological horror fiction, where the character going insane KNOWS EXACTLY what's happening to him/her, but also realizes that there is nothing he/she can do to outweight the deterioration.
Psychological horror is mostly very cryptic when it comes to a characters actual mental condition, but literally shoving it down his/her own face is actually a pretty interesting concept I've sadly never actually seen in horror fiction, though I'm almost 100% certain it HAS to be out there.
Personally, I'd recommend the TV series "Legion" and "Hannibal, " both of which ran for 3 seasons focusing on characters that are aware of their own mental instability while also facing legitimate threats that are beyond their comprehension, though Legion focuses on sci-fi and existential concepts while Hannibal mostly features criminals who have a little too much creativity.
"Thanatomorphose" (2012), where is concept is taken literally and figuratively.
you might like the anime/visual novel series Higurashi. it sort of has those vibes
The Fly (1986) is a classic take on something like that. Bit more on the nose but great for it’s time

Amateur Night has to be my personal favorite not because of the sexual theme but because the Succubus is practically Beauty and the Beast except more horrifying, to think that this guy could have had the most perfect partner anyone could ask for. Sure anyone can pick up from a mile away that something isn't right with her and how rather uncanny she is but then again in this day and age people are just getting weirder so she could have blended in but my personal theory is this.
Her feelings torwards him were genuine, like practically Yandere levels of affection torwards this guy that she just met but with her being practically a monster she doesn't understand how to act or BE Human.
Though the reasons why I love Amateur Night is because near the end where he breaks his wrist we see her in distress, obviously she knows something is wrong and she knows that she was rejected but she doesn't understand why. Perhaps this has happened before just like all of her previous 'lovers' and she is learning from trial and error but the fact that this Succubus shows genuine Human emotion is just something I can personally relate to as I have Aspergers and ADHD, the other reason as to why I love this scene is because we don't see a lot of horror films around the idea that the monster shows something other than the stereotypical monster persona, we never see the monster show a human emotion like fear or sadness and I wish we can have more horror movies like this one scene and so now to finish my rambling up I must ask, when was the last time you ever saw a monster cry?

I really liked the stand alone movie Siren which took the premise to its extreme. It makes you genuinely feel bad for the guy who has her affections and it doesn't shy away from her monstrous nature.

Honestly, for me out of the whole series, the Alien one will always be the one I think of as the scariest. Especially because the last shot is really sad.
I attempted to watch the first VHS movie with my father during Halloween, loving found footage horror and not being aware of how horrificly violent and sexual it was. The very first mini movie was about a succubus violently ripping off a guys penis and throwing it across the room. So it’s safe to say we didn’t finish the movie
Safe Haven in my mind is probably the most compelling piece of "found footage" that I ever saw growing up.
Love the series it’s so fun to watch.
I think Dante tied himself up to impress Scarlet in that scene or the cape lending her magic cause it shows you don’t have to wear it. Either way a goofy tape❤
The vampire one from vhs 94 is one of my personal favorites. Just love there’s a bit of a twist and to see all those guys get what they deserve at the end. And the idea of using the blood of it for their attack, just super cool
The creepiest part about Ozzy's Dungeon in my opinion is Donna's smile.
I think the creepiest part is when Trevor makes an appearance, but nobody says anything.
I remember seeing that hotel one as a kid and it traumatized and I was always convinced a vampire demon would attack my hotel whenever we stayed at one.
I do agree that amateur night's make-up for the succubus is horrifying. I remember the first time I saw her in a random clip and was taken aback from how creepy she looks. With time I understood that the thing that creeps me out is the uncanny valley of her face and her eyes.
The face itself is almost human but then it splits in the middle (also noticed that you can see the slit where she splits that part throughout the tape) and her eyes because they are super freaky (like already in the scene at the club where she tells the guy that she likes him) which is also due to the actress doing a fantastic job to sell the unhinged but really diabolic lady.
Happy to see some Storm Drain appreciation here! People tend to overlook it in favor of The Subject, but I think it's one of the better ones of the series and fits the theme of 94 more.

V/H/S was always a weird series for me i saw it so young and so long ago it seemed almost like separate movies and somewhat fever dreams because how much of them I've forgotten and blurred. Last Halloween i stumbled across Viral and one of my personal oldest mysteries were solved. the occasional thoughts i have that creep me out comes from some of the films in this series all thanks to my older brothers and dad watching it for the shock value. now its one of my favorites.
Dude lemme just say that you singlehandedly got me into the VHS series and im so thankful that yiu made this video because the movies are so good, ive watched the first 3 so far and im planning to watch the rest soon

VHS is what made me fall in love with the found footage genre again, and for some reason the anthology format really works for horror. Reminds me, I need to rewatch the original.
I would say amateur night was probably one of the most terrifyingly good tapes I have seen. I like how they change your view on what makes a succubus a succubus, because usually you would expect succubi to just be demons looking for a little fun.
amateur night was always really cool. kinda shows how the footage was stumbled upon. made a lot of sense hence made it a top tier movie

I shared your experience when i was around 12 and watched the first VHS movie on Netflix. It was on my 3DS when it had netflix available. I couldn't get past the first segment. I revisited way later in life and it continues to be one of my favorite franchises
I think my favorite segment is "10/31/98" from the first movie. I really love the concept.

What an incredible anthology - these tapes seem sincerely well made, and I am so glad you showed us there. Something about this format - multiple VHS tapes of horror loaded onto a film, something just works so well. I really wanna see more anthologies like these, especially when they come with explainers like our lovely TH-cam presenter here to boil it down foe us ^&^
Honestly I think I agree with every single one of your choices as being best. I do remember really liking the one that was the biker who gets turned into a zombie and it's like a zombie POV
The zombie biker and the cyborg-girl are not the scariest, but imo the coolest interpretation of both of these ideas : watching 2 humans turn into creatures and what happens to them through their own eyes is kindda impressive

Timo Tjahjanto (who directed The Subject and co-directed Safe Haven) is unhinged. I'd recommend checking out some of his other feature films if you haven't, especially The Night Comes For Us.

Never was gonna expect that safe haven was an Indonesian horror, and honestly it’s quite refreshing to see an indonesian style of horror taken away from the usual mystical dark voodoo vibe to a setting thats reminiscent of the Heaven’s Gate cult (except of course, with a demon and the zombie bullshit). Definitely a favorite of mine from this list!
Gawkers really made me feel uneasy, not sure why, but that segment actually scared me lol. It felt realistic to me, like the moment they realized they fucked up was when I was like "Oh shit", like holy hell that segment was scary for me lol, it felt like I was watching one of my nightmares.
wait there are more movies after the third one?! admittedly the third one didn't quite hit the same for me but there were still some fun parts-- the first two are some of my favorite horror movies though. really happy to see this series getting some appreciation, when it's good it is FANTASTIC.

The thing I like with the VHS movies is that the stories are so short that they don't overstay their welcome. A lot of horror movies tend to struggle keeping the plot interesting if it goes on for too long.

Absolutely great video, I love the V/H/S series a shit ton lol. Although, if another video is made on the series (considering how large it is) it would be cool to see “The Subject” sequence in V/H/S/94. It has a fantastic story and great act-work! Best part is definitely near the end with the commander and Jono.

the first one made me so uncomfortable. like these are so golden because they probs write these to make you have that feeling when you see someone get horribly hurt, like your joints feel like they'd snap out of nowhere. 9.5/10, taking off .5 points because i'm shivering in my timbers a little too hard
‘Dante the Great’ is just silly, but i personally think that the vhs tape with ‘Dante the Great’ knows how silly it is, and actually makes it enjoyable to watch. It’s almost like a refreshing breath of air

but I don't remember it being that impactful, it felt very horror comedy given how ridiculous a lot of the shorts were
ive never seen a full VHS film, nor have i looked too much into them in the slightest. However, being a film nerd, its incredible to see how a lower budget film crew can build worlds this intense. the films feel all-encompassing from what ive seen, and even the outlandish ideas (such as a magic cloak that feeds on humans) can feel daunting and real. Storm Drain has such a cool villain, and Ozzys Dungeon had such a unique story which impressed me. Ill definitely check out the series, even though im not too into horror.

vhs 2 was the first horror movie to traumatize me in middle school! really an iconic series that still leaves me uneasy
My dumb ass saw the thumbnail at 2am and was like “nope, no way I’m watching this”. Then I remembered vhs is my fave film franchise and I’ve seen each movie at least 4 times (except viral, only watched that once). A testament to how scary the movies are that they scared me, a fan who watched the first movie at 13 a couple years after it came out
Even though im probably never going to watch these in full. I still like these ideas and tapes. It shows you how messed up it can get and how far they are willing to go, and i think its actually better that theres no real conclusion to most of these, it just lets the viewer think of theories of what happens after the found footage tapes end
Amateur Night and Safe Haven are my 2 favorite shorts. I also loved the one with the zombie apocalypse taking place.

Yo, I randomly found this video & I remember watching the VHS 2/Safe Haven YEARS ago. I really love horror/disturbing movies personally & I love when I come across people who share that interest. I wanted to suggest a movie to you (if you haven't already seen it) this movie called Martyrs from 2008. They remade it in 2015, I have not seen that version but the 2008 Martyrs, still sits today as the most disturbing movie that I have ever seen in my life. I own the DVD & the director even has a brief apology intro for how messed up this movie was about to be. I bring this movie up because that VHS 2 section that you summarized is like the closest thing a movie has come to reminding me of how utterly insane Martyrs was.
My personal favorite VHS segment is probably the funeral from 94. Very simple, yet very effective.

Def my favorite movie franchise and I'm happy they are still making them.
Personally I loved the Parallel dimension one myself. The Amateur night was my favorite, and was made into a full movie I want to own on DVD if I can find it. Ratmah was very gross and freaky and I loved it as well as the Paradise Cult one. The others are forgettable sadly.
Solid list. There are some people who hate Dante the Great, but i love it! As for my favorite from every movie, Amateur Night is my favorite from the first, with 10/31/98 as a close second. VHS 2 has Safe Haven with A Ride in the Park as a very, very close second. Interchangable, really. For Viral, I like Dante the Great, but Parallel Monstersnis my favorite. And I like Bonestorm too. 94, my favorite is Storm Drain with The Empty Wake as a close second. And 99 has my favorite segment overall, To Hell and Back. It's just my type of humor, and the design of hell is quite nice.

Just found your channel a few minutes ago love the VHS series. There were a couple on here I haven’t seen yet, but I do like the first two the one with the chick with the weird eyes 👀 is Hannah Fhurman I guess Shazam in another movie, kind of like a prequel to this one before they found out who she was or something I think is made by the same people that were the same company that makes these ones but I haven’t seen that one, but I was quite impressed with this one. I’ve never seen clips just like you are and I the only one you didn’t talk about was the guy that was running through the park on his way home to see his fiancé and he turned into a zombie that one was pretty gnarly. Oh, they had some gnarly affects, but I like to have the whole ZOMBIFIED thing or people were vomiting and turning into zombies. That was a pretty creepy want to though.

I completely agree. Safe haven is off the charts. I find myself going back to it again and again. I have lost count how many times I have watched it. And amature night was pretty damn good to.
V/H/S: Viral was just as good as the others. I still think the wraparound story in it is one of the better ones throughout the series.
Overall, V/H/S is my absolute favorite anthology/found footage series of all time. I'm always eagerly waiting for the movies every time one is announced.
