    Messer, LOVING the video series, thank you. Had to pause to have a moment of fun.... 9:28, you made a CRITICAL mistake in your presentation talking about QoS. From REAL WORLD experience, in any enterprise setting the admin would definitely be prioritizing World of Warcraft at the highest level possible! Hahahaha xD Back to work!!

      Gloss. Funny story. While I was working on my degree, we had students that played wow regularly in class on their laptops. Our instructors had everything open so we could do that. They were trying to treat the students as professionals. We were sitting at our desktops going over some hands on labs. All of the sudden we started having multiple windows spam all over the screen. The malware had spread throughout the whole P.C tech wing. I worked with the instructors and we traced it back to a student who downloaded a wow quest helper. The quest helper had a dangerous payload with it. Needless to say all ports for any sort of gaming were shutdown for ever after that. Every time I hear about a professional like Mr Messer bring up wow, it always makes me laugh.

    Thanks for the video series! I went through the A+ text book (different author) and have been having trouble with the objectives and what info each one is specifically looking for. This helps so much, and saves me so much time. Thanks again.

    Hi prof messer, could you please explain the ‘need’ for port forwarding ? As I thought NAT was a 2 way street in terms of, your device sends a request through or disguised as the local router, and then receives back a response, from the destination I.p. So then what is the need to set up an individual request via a port for incoming traffic to a specific I.p. ( as I thought that was the purpose of NAT) many thanks for your vids and course notes etc.

    • @professormesser
      @professormesser  4 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Port forwarding is a way to allow inbound traffic. Because our firewalls are stateful, inbound traffic is only allowed if there was a previous outbound communication to that IP address and port number. All unsolicited traffic attempts are blocked by the firewall.
      Port forwarding is a type of NAT that allows specific types of unsolicited inbound traffic and redirects that traffic to an internal device (usually a server or service).

    Every modem I've ever used personally had terrible functionality in regards to letting it "find the best channel automatically." I made a big move recently and spent 6 months in an apartment. Every time I checked what channel my modem was automatically choosing to broadcast on, I would use a wifi channel analyzer app on my phone to check the channel map around me. It seemed to always pick a highly congested channel, Thankfully I'm in a house now and it really doesn't matter because there aren't 20 modems within broadcast range anymore.

    • @Pslamist
      @Pslamist 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Never considered that use-case. That's great thinking. You're able to move things to a less-congested channel after that?

    Another great video! Can someone clear up a question for me? Is the router's external NAT'd IP address that is mentioned in this video the same as the router's WAN interface IP address that is assigned automatically by my ISP's DHCP server that was mentioned in the last video?

    Hey Prof, thanks for all these videos. IT has been something I've always wanted to get into, and I'm hoping that getting the certification can lead to new ways into the field at my new job, eventually.
    Question for you (or anyone else):
    Since the test is reworked every three years with updated information, should I be on the lookout for a new playlist or anything? Or should I just try to learn now until more information comes up?

      @@professormesser When would MAC filtering be the right solution? Thanks for the videos and answering comments!

    • @professormesser
      @professormesser  5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@ashweeee9160 MAC filtering isn't very useful as a security technology, but it can be used to help manage internal devices and keep them from connecting to the wrong networks. It's not a commonly used technology because of the management required to add and maintain the address list, but it does fit some specific corner cases.

    • @Dextermorga
      @Dextermorga 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Professor Messer thank you for your replay. I am just curious. Because CompTIA is pushing MAC filtering as a security feature pretty hard. But few things that I remember from CCNA 15 years ago, this was actually an issue. So I was interested in what has changed. A few days ago, I was trying to find a solution, but with no luck. It seems to me in general people are not aware, or they don't know how easy it is to spoof MAC address. The only sign I can see is, when Windows is complaining about two hosts are using the same IP. Now I am trying to get back to IT after so many years. Hopefully, CompTIA A+ is a good choice for the beginning and next year Cisco when they replace the current program. Thank you

    • @professormesser
      @professormesser  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Dextermorga CompTIA includes MAC filtering on the exam specifically to show that it is not a security feature, but instead is a management feature. In every course I've created (including this one), I clearly describe MAC filtering as security through obscurity, which obviously is not security at all.

    if you enable MAC filtering you need to disable broadcast SSID?

    • @professormesser

      MAC filtering and SSID broadcast suppression are two different configuration settings and can be independently set. Neither setting is dependent on the other.
