As a Hungarian, I was upset that no one in London spoke Hungarian. I tried the younger age group, but neither did they.

You should visit Keszthely and Lake Balaton (largest freshwater lake in Europe) and if you have the time the castle in Sümeg (next to where I live). All within less than 100miles from Györ.
To me personally, the best part of the Lake Balaton shores was in Tihany and Balatonfüred, such amazing towns. But I also have a nice memory from the underground lake boat ride in Tapolca (named Tapolcai tavasbarlang).
Agreed, Lake Balaton is a must see. If you visit only one place, choose Tihany. The town itself is extremely touristy but there are hiking trails with phenomenal views on the peninsula.
By the way, Lake Balaton is the largest freshwater lake in Central Europe only. In Eastern and Northern Europe, there are at least 40 lakes with larger surface area. But that does not make this unique lake less spectacular.
This trip to Hungary is surely a challenge to Gabriel as he doesn't speak Hungarian or German, in fact he speaks only English (and a little bit of Spanish). But it seems that at the beginning, even this barrier can be somehow broken, just like in Albania and some other countries before. So keep it up, good job, it is interesting trip in some way. Sopron also looks like a nice city, no doubt.

You need a very agressive treatement, especially in the beginning..9 series of injections every 3 weeks in the beginning, then surgery in order to remove the tumor, and then continue chemo treatement..
Hysterectomie could be another option...

It is actually "sister language" to Finnish. Even though they do not seem similar at all
When i was in Hungary, almost nobody spoke English but almost everyone spoke German, so I was fine. My high school German teacher was from Salzburg, where you just were.
Maybe in the west of the country in towns (especially Lake Balaton and its shore towns, also border towns like Sopron), but east and countryside are still different, there even German is not spoken so much and Hungarian is dominant. But yes, at Lake Balaton, German is a tourist lingua franca, that's why it also relaxed me a lot there as I speak German, too.
Around Lake Balaton, some years ago, it was like a Hungarian kind of Mallorca for Germans, many living permanently around the lake bcz it used to be cheap. Seem, it has changed right now, means, no longer being so cheap...

About linguistics; do NOT automatically assume people in eastern Europe will handle English. Before 1990 the lingua franca in central and eastern Europe was German. It surprises me that Gabriel is not aware of this. I wish him good luck.
Depends on the country and school. Actually, main foreign language before the ‘90s was Russian. And then German or English.
@@chepinchan , exactly. Russian was the first foreign language for Hungarians in schools in years 1945-1990 and German was more important than English as the world was not as globalized as it is now. That's why English is spoken mainly by people under 40 in Hungary.

@@michaelahass2695 well if you hate their language, then you’d hate most of Eastern European languages. As most of them are Slavic and more or less similar. All of them except Hungarian and Greek. Not all of them use Cyrillic though. I think it’s only Russian, Ukrainian, Bulgarian and Serbian that do.
You should make a stop in the ancient ex capital city called Székesfehérvár tons of history and nice city trains go often from Budapest South or “Déli Pályaudvar “

My wife and I will be there later on this year. Heading to my hometown in northeastern Croatia, some 40km south of Hungarian border. We’ll be flying in to Budapest and spend a couple of days there. Looking forward to it!
BTW, those “ pancakes “ you were thinking about were actually European crepes. You can tell by the word “palachinke” that was written on the menu , which is Eastern European for crepes. Way better than pancakes! You should have tried it!

Goulash = soup
pörkölt= stew
It is true for both dishes that there are many variations (used meats, spices).
But basically the things mentioned first are the essential ones.
Many dishes are called goulash in the surrounding countries, but in Hungary it is always a spicy meat and vegetable soup.
At the beginning of the 1900s, at least 20-25 dishes were called goulash in Hungary. Today, only the soup.

Little Hungarian language lesson 😀
Vasútállomás = railway station.
vágány = track
Peron = platform.
In railways, it is customary to specify the track number. Since you can only get on the train from one side, this does not cause any problems in finding a seat. The platforms are designed accordingly.
There are some that can only be used from one side, but there are also some that can be used on both sides.
You pronounced Győr very well. For English speakers, gy is usually a problem.
The ny soft n. I think it is the same as the Spanish ñ,
The bus and train fares are the same, as kilometer-based pricing is a state regulation.
The difference arises from the length of the route.

I enjoy your videos , I watch them often. I live in Hungary and even I find public transport to be a mess. They operate on a very small budget , the busses and the trains are slow, old . some lack air conditioning, most have no wifi , the toilets are dirty....etc. I often think how difficult can be for foreigners when even I struggle sometimes.
The time tables on the internet are very good though. Very detailed. They even tell you which platform , the time , the stops ....etc. But if you dont know beforehand where you want to go, its difficult. Young people learn english in school , but we older guys learned russian . It was compulsory. Later german . The new generation learns mostly english . Just want to add that the economy is going through a period of very high inflation. The price of everything has almost doubled in a year. The prices you pay now is much higher than a year ago. Thank you Orban Viktor , our idiotic president.

The meal and beer at the end were pretty cheap for a change.
At 13.46 some of those street names were German as well as Hungarian.
I truly love your videos man and you where my big inspiration to travel. I’ve been to 13 countries so far and plan on visiting many more. Your videos are always my go to when I want to see or know something about a country. I recently went to Finland in late May and before I went I looked up to see if you had any videos over Finland and of course you did. Your videos are always very helpful and you do such a good job showing each country.

Gabriel was in Austria - no Wiener schnitzel. Currently in Hungary - so far, no goulash! I am concerned.
Goulash is also a typical dish in Vienna because of our shared history with Hungary, although what we call "Gulasch" is called Pörkölt in Hungary (where the original goulash comes from, of course).

The country is landlocked , no mountains, only flat land and the Balaton lake. But beautiful , only austro hungarian empire architecture. As for the language it seems that there is some ressemblance with finnish.
And prices are pretty high..for an ex communist country.
I prefer the landscapes in Roumania, the Carpathian peaks, the latin language..or Croatia .
@@michaelahass2695 I have grandparents that were born- one in Budda and one in Pest. They met in the US and married. Also the last I found about the language the scientists could not figure out where it came from so with all that being said I am partial to Hungary. I am sure Romania is beautiful and I follow a man in Croatia and it is a beautiful country. Thanks , Much love to you.

Sopron looks amazing I find it interesting that in the old town there was that Roman wall which was only discovered during WWII and more different buildings built around and on top? Anyway loved this video always nice to go off the beaten track cheers

Switzerland loves ripping off everybody. The Alps are also in Austria, Germany, France and Italy so there is absolutely no point in going there. Went there once - never again.

Hey Gabriel -- with all the travel that you do, you may want to look into a Charles Schwab card, which reimburses you for the ATM fees world wide. I've used one for the past few years, and it's saved me a ton of money. Plus, you get a much better exchange rate than at the change offices. You pay the ATM fees, but then they are refunded at the end of the month.
I also have a Charles Schwab and and I’m very happy with it…
In most places in Europe you can pay by card so you don't really need cash. So what would be the point of having the Charles Schwab card?

The weather you describe is exactly how it is currently in UK (due to the jet stream giving heatwave to southern europe). Grey, sun pops out, gets warm, then sun quickly disappears and its cold again and damp (and then rain) plus lots of wind. Usually July is much better in UK so presume Hungary is having similar weather.

I like your reasoning in the topic of west/east Europe. And people in east Europe should not be offended cause they are such nice countries. And Ukraine being a really nice one. I personally prefer the east parts over the west parts for travel. I enjoyed Moldova and Romania a lot too. Like you said, more mysterious part of Europe.

Yeah, public transportation is still really cheap and also quite reliable in Hungary. Prices for food, accommodation and everything else have gone up quite a bit during the past three years. Something like 50 percent since 2019, I would say. But most things are still cheaper than in Germany or Austria.
An yes, the Soproni Demon is a decent beer. You should also try some of the Hungarian craft beers.
Pronunciation of Hungarian words is actually not difficult. There are just a few simple rules that are strictly followed. It is way more regular than English, French or German.
Not true..the only ressemblance is with finnish..
German, English , French , Italian or Spanish can be learned with some efforts of course. Or living long term in one of these countries, where as Hungarian is crazy difficult..

Hungary is an interesting case, a country settled by the Magyar people from the Ural mountains, they still today have some allegiance to Russia, probably from being behind the Iron Curtain too long I suppose. It is notable that a country so far west in Europe doesn't have a romance language as its main tongue. Looking forward to seeing what you uncover :)

@@michaelahass2695 Romania is not Western Europe, and I did not say that there are no western European countries with roman languages, only that it is not remarkable for a western country not to have a roman language, as most western European countries don't (Austria, Germany, Holland, majority of Belgium and Switzerland, Scandinavia, GB ...).

Western Europe also made part of the huge roman empire, the western Roman Empire..as for Roumania, there you have an "island of latin language" in the middle of slavic languages + hungarian..(which has completely other origines , probably similarities with finnish ? ).

Hi Gabriel, the trip over to Sopron was interesting as you indicated it was a bit livelier yet doesn't seem to invite tourists which may be why they lack it outside of the capital city of Budapest. The language becomes more of a bit of a stalemate navigating through these locations you do make an effort, but some languages are particularly difficult to learn in a brief time even some rudimentary phases would take some time.

Interesting at 16:30, they use Hungarian, German and English on the sign. Perhaps German is a language that is taught in schools in Hungary 🇭🇺 along with English 🤔

Yes, they can usually choose to learn one or both languages. Most Hungarian children choose English, because at the end of the day, children in Germany usually choose English as well, so a Hungarian and a German can always converse in English. This is becoming the norm in the EU now (learning English that is).
@@GabrielTravelerVideos , Sopron has an interesting story because it was firstly meant after the WWI that it would be annexed to Austria, just as other parts of its Sopron county that are now in Austria, in the state of Burgenland (from where also a Hungarian national hero, composer Franz Liszt, originally was - Raiding/Doborjan, and where even a Croatian minority lives as Croatia was also a part of Hungary at the same time). There was a referendum and 55% were against of annexation of these lands to Austria in total. However, when subtracting Sopron and 9 other surrounding town votes, it made barely over 50% for annexation, so Sopron and 9 other towns were made a part of Hungary and other territories from referendum were annexed to Austria to form the state of Burgenland. Firstly, it was meant for Sopron as well (although referendum results were against), but people uprose with weapons, made unrecognised Banate of Leitha (Lajtabánság) in 1921 and battled their way to remain in Hungary as they were historically part of Transleithania in Austro-Hungarian Empire which was Hungarian part (on the other hand, Burgenland is the only part of Transleithania that was annexed to Austria after the WWI).
Today, Sopron is still a bilingual city (Hungarian and German, with similar number of speakers in the city, even slightly in German's favor) and that's why signs in the city are in both languages. Also the majority of tourists there are German speaking from Austria and Germany, Sopron is near the interesting Lake Neusiedl, the biggest endorheic lake in the Central Europe, with depth of only 1 meter in average.
If you visit Lake Balaton and its shores, there are no official signs of streets in German, but still German is mainly a tourist language because the most visitors are from Austria and Germany there. That's why many people near Lake Balaton want to learn German as their first foreign language and not English, many Hungarians also work in Austria and Germany. But still, Hungarians have so distinct language, different than others, that some of them see learning English, German and Russian as tough, only 20% of Hungarians speak English and even less fluently. However, it improves within younger generations as they are more in contact with the English.

Hey Gabriel! Isten hozott and a very warm welcome to you in our country! Travelling to Sopron and taking advantage of being "on foot" i recommend to you staying at the Palatinus Hotel Sopron which is a centrally located place right in the middle of medieval Sopron. Dont miss taking the stairs up to the "Tüztorony" which is the old fire-tower, and pay a visit to local winelovers stronghold "Gyógygödör", which is a classic wine-cellar withstanding the pace of time :) in case of any questions also concerning budapest, please ask, have fun!!

Sopron/Ödenburg is great. Gabe if you have time visit Budapest again, in the Castledistrict they rebuild which the communist didn't rebuild because of idealogical reasons as they did near the Parlement.Sopron is one of the most beautiful cities in the entire country.

Come visit Cluj in Romania. Maybe Sibiu and Sighisoara also. Maybe old villages like Viscri, Crit and Mesendorf. You will like it for sure

Your bus situation in the beginning reminded me of when I traveled alone for the first time to Bilbao. Luckily the younger generation speak English and helped me book a bus ticket to another town. Thats awesome that you listen to Alice in Chains, one of the greatest! Do you have any videos of you going to Washington state? I know you went to Oregon. It would be cool to see your perspective of travelling through the Olympic peninsula or the San Juan Islands. My favorite places.

One of the great things about traveling is it makes you think on your feet. It's not for everyone as some people get quickly frustrated. Just like in life, you have to adapt to the uncertain changes. Unfortunately majority of us get stuck in a routine that we don't even realize the meaning of living. I've heard just about every excuse in the world when it comes to people and their desire to travel and why they can't. If you really have a deep desire, passion for anything you'll find a way. Unfortunately most just fantize about travel, staying in expensive hotels, eating at expensive resturant and taking stupid selfies. Then returning home to tell everyone about you amazing adventures.
