I Traveled to a Town Because it Had a Crazy Name

  • I arrived in Mako, a town in southern Hungary, looked on a map to see what else was in the area and saw another town nearby called Hodmezovasarhely. I thought the name was pretty interesting, so I decided to go there and see what it was like.

A few things: You can check out Nick's TH-cam channel here: www.youtube.com/@IndigoTraveller At 4:30 in the video that is the thermal bath complex that I will be visiting today, called Schwimmbad Hagymatikum. At 20:10 when I said the Jews left town, obviously they didn't all leave voluntarily, most of them were taken away by the Nazis and put in concentration camps. But I didn't want to go into a whole explanation of World War II right then. What I don't quite understand is that there was a plaque with the years 1733-1918. Any idea what that was referring to? Could it be the years that the synagogue was active and then it was shut down at the end of World War I? I'm not familiar with the history of World War I in Hungary, so not sure what might have happened then regarding the Jewish people in the country.

As a Hungarian, I think that plaque might had been bubonic plauque ( black death) It was brought from Moldova. About 25 000 inhabitants died from this epidemic in every years. Even Maria Theresia caught It ( the habsburg qeen of Hungary )

Before the first World War there were flourishing jewish commuities in Hungary, I dont think the synagogue was shot down, before the second World War. After that, had been shot for some Time, for obvious reasons: most jews emmigrated to USA or Israel, or taken away by nazies unfortunatelly. Fortunately, We have again a flourishing jewish community in Hungary. They live mostly in Budapest or Debrecen. There are very nice, World famous synagogues, the second largest in the World is here, Budapest
Fun fact : the mayor of Hodmezővasárhely is Péter Márky Zay, who was the prime minister nominee of the opposition parties last year ( against Orbán)

Love these kind of videos. Just grab some random local bus, eat some random local things and end up in some random local town. This always gives you a way better feel of how a country is truly like because you are essentially doing what people over there do. Sometimes we dont need attractions or famous sites, for me the main attraction is just the traveling itself.

Hi Gabriel, that was some traveling adventure, but this is what real traveling is about going to towns and places no one would think about and making the best of it. How can you really find out about something if you don't venture out to it? This is what life is an adventure and enjoying the time you have on this planet. Eastern Europe is turning into a wonderful experience of hidden gems and new areas of exploring.

Your mention of Szeged reminds me that my now-wife and I were there at the every end of 1989. We had planned a trip to Eastern Europe during our winter break from college in the UK and, as she was a US citizen and I was from the UK, we couldn't travel together on either Interrail (for Europeans only) or Eurrail (for Americans), but there was an option we could take together called "Eurotrain". We had to specify a route and we would get a discount, after we bought our ticket at the end of October were locked into our route for a two months before we left. Watching the news, we saw all the places on our route (Budapest, Berlin, etc.) change as the Iron Curtain started to crumble in revolutions and protests. By the time we got to Szeged in Hungary, an armed rebellion had broken out in Timisoara in Romania, just 40 miles away. We considered going there to volunteer, feeling that proximity to historic events, but before we could the dictator Ceausescu had been killed and it was all over.

Some political fun facts about the town:
Even though by it's size, Hódmezővásárhely shouldn't be considerd a very important city, in Hungarian politics it has a very interesting role. Lazar Janos, an influential politician & minister was borned here, and he was the major of the town before getting more important roles in Orban's governments. In 2018, a local election was held and the opposition candidate, Marki Zay Peter won it. It was the first important case when the several smaller opposition parties put up a joint candidate together, and defeated Orbán's party outside of Budapest. It was a symbolic victory, and later the new major, MZP has decided to run for prime minister in the parliamentary elections supported by the same parties - but it ended in failure, and put the collaboration of the opposition to an end. Ever since, the two important local politicians are in a seemingly constant battle, and because of it, the town makes it to the news a lot.
Also, the train that appears in your video around 15:00 is very symbolic, as it was the biggest infrastructural investment of the region in the past decade. It was linked to Lazar Janos and Orban. The opposition attacks the project as the construction was a suspect of heavy corruption, and it costed much more than it should had.

Name of this city is mind-blowing on the first sight but after checking its pronunciation on Forvo site for some times, it became easier and easier, smashing / breaking down the word into four parts Hód-mező-vásár-hely. The hungarians are not really europeans but gypsys from India who came to Europe just 1000 years ago. That's why even today they speak an asiatic indian language. The true homeland of the asiatic gypsy hungarians is Asia, specifically India and Kazakhstan.

    • @Aszpirin72
      @Aszpirin72 28 วันที่ผ่านมา

This is mostly bullsh.t, the Hungarian language has absolutely nothing to do with any indian language. The Hungarians come indeed from Asia, but they were a bunch of Uralic nomad tribes, and the language belongs to the Finno-Ugric branch of the Uralic language family, very distantly related to Finnish and Estonian, but not mutually intelligible with those to any extent. During their way west, they were culturally influenced by several turkic tribes as well, which is reflected in the Hungarian language, too. They might have "touched" the northwestern part of Kazakhstan (not shure though), but a really longer "station" of their journey was the Etelköz, which is a territory north to the Black Sea, in today's Ukraine. They had to flee Etelköz because ot the Pechenegs if I remember well, and finally settled down in the Carpathian Basin at the end of the 9th century.
The Eastern European Gypsies are a different ethnic group, and they live in several Eastern European countries: Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, etc. They had been more or less linguistically assimilated so they might speak Hungarian, Slovak, Romanian, etc or even mixed dialects of these, but there are regions (most notably in Transsylvania) where they use their own language (or languages?), which is of Indian origin, and has little or nothing to do with Hungarian or Romanian etc. On the other hand they have a very rich and distinct cultural heritage, and the gypsy music is world-famous, and there's a lot of good musicians among the Gypsies, who were and still are very popular in Hungary. This is the likely cause of the westerner's misbeliefs that Hungary is inhabited by Gypsies, although they are an ethnic minority in Hungary and in other Easern European countries too.

Coming to Romania, I guess that you'll visit places you've never been before- I'll suggest Oradea (city trip)- and than more countryside atractions that I see you seem to prefer: Maramures (genuine traditional unalteted)- Colibita (super mountain lake) - Sovata (beautiful salt mountain and balneo unique Bear Lake)- Praid (salt mine)- Tusnad (mountain resort)- Patarlagele (mud volcanoes)- Braila (big new Danube bridge)- Tulcea- Sf. Gheorghe or Sulina (the unique Danube Delta)

Hi Gabriel, great to see you in Eastern Europe, and really happy you decided to visit Romania next. I've been watching your travels for quite some time now, and I was wondering when you'd show up in our neighborhood.
I'm guessing your first stop will be Timisoara, which is a great city and the European Capital of Culture in 2023. I'm sure you'll love it, it has diverse influences. Fun fact: it was the first European city to use electric street lighting.
I recommend you focus on Transylvania, which is a fascinating mix of culture and history. The Transylvanian countryside is incredible, the food is great, and the people very welcoming. You'll also find tons of medieval castles, fortified churches, beautiful palaces, and lots more. The nature in Transylvania is breathtaking to boot. The Carpathians in particular are mountains as beautiful as you'll ever see.
Definitely check out Sighisoara, it's one of the best preserved medieval cities in the world.
If you'll be heading in the direction of Cluj-Napoca, maybe not visit next week, as it will be very hectic due to one of the biggest electro music festivals in Europe taking place then (unless you're into that, of course).
What else? Food is amazing, make sure you try mici, sarmale, papanasi. Most people in cities will speak English, especially if they're under 50 or so. In the countryside, not really. Romania also has a booming craft beer scene, so you might want to try some of the local craft beers. Wines are great too, very underrated bit really good. Romanian is a romance language, very similar to Italian and Portuguese.
What else? As I said, nature is gorgeous. I work from home during summer, from the Apuseni Mountains, and that area is simply stunning. Also Maramures is incredible, with some of the best preserved traditions in the world.
That's it for now, I may jump in with some tips as you post from here.
    Happy travels!

That hotel room is perfect!!! Beautiful little hidden town super clean and quiet nice people. Love these prices.. that swiss train pass felt like a scam! Other passes in the region close aren't configured in price like that. Are they taking advantage of ppl that wouldn't know because you automatically assume a pass is money saving as opposed to buying separate tickets!
