As an American living in Japan for about 7 years it makes me so happy when I see how helpful, kind and hospitable the Japanese are to you in your adventure. It truly is a wonderful place, sometimes quirky, but always safe, clean and respectful. My wife is from Murakami, so nice to see you stopped by and enjoyed.

I am Japanese and enjoy small trips with my own camper van. It's crazy that you guys are traveling the world. Especially traveling in a place like Japan where the language and culture are different can be very nerve-wracking.
Under such circumstances, Japan's good security and the abundance of facilities that are useful when traveling by camper van will reduce the tension of your trip. ❤❤

The brown ball like thing is called sugidama (cedar ball) which is made of japanese cedar twings. They are hung at sake breweries to tell people new sake is made. When they are newly hung, their color is fresh green. Probably you'll have a lot of opportunities to see them later in your trip.

Oh darn! You came right through my city and area and I had no idea! Hello from Tsuruoka!!
The "massive church" you saw in Sakata is actually a wedding hall. A lot of the wedding halls here have a church look as many couples want a more western style wedding when they get married.
I haven't been to that temple in Tsuruoka to see the mummy, but I have seen a couple of other ones in this area. You wouldn't be allowed to photograph them. The Shonai area has quite a few of the mummies in Japan. They are rather sad in my opinion, and very tiny.
We have a lot of amazing things to see in this area, it's too bad that your stay was so brief. If you come back through on your next trip around the world (!) there'll be so much I could show you!

12:10 I smiled when you described Japan as 'green' because my friend Tacy had a very different experience when she went to Japan for her school mate's wedding. The event was in Tokyo where she also went to an observation deck atop a skyscraper. From that vantage it was city and bay as far as the eye could see, save for the lovely Imperial Palace. When she returned to Seattle, she said the thing she missed most in Japan was being surrounded by green.

Usually they tell the children to go home at 6:00. Other announcements are for emergencies like elders with dementia who go on walks and can’t get home. They will tell the age of a person and what if they are wearing and if you see this person to call the police or something to help find them.

14:35 OH yes! Ponzu Sauce, also known as Ajipon! Traditionally this is made with sweet rice wine, dried fish flakes, konbu (ocean seaweed kelp), and vinegar. They mix lemon and oranges to add taste. It is really good with fish, salad, pot stickers!

Hi guys! Just to correct info you may have picked up/mixed up from me..."Yosakoi" itself doesn't mean "pulling in the fishing nets". The song Soran Bushi that is often used by Yosakoi Festival teams IS a traditional sea song of north Japan, supposedly used by fishermen as they pulled in nets etc. The teams now often gesture net pulling and shout out "Soran! Soran!". "Yosakoi" is the name of the dance, and the festivals that started in Kochi, south Japan...and has now spread all over. The Hokkaido event is called Yosakoi Soran Festival and teams often use the Soran music. Here Endeth the Kulture Lesson :-)

Those musical chimes are great - we heard them in Fujikawaguchiko at maybe three times a day - they definitely sounded like a town-wide version of the good old school bell - lunchtime, hometime, that sort of thing!
That wiper thing happened with my old Cavalier - it was a worn ball joint on the end of the arm. If it happens again, you could adjust the passenger side one so it starts higher and sweeps further across - that trick got us back from within a scream's distance of Chessington World of Adventures to Leeds in torrential rain, one wiper swishing away like a BTCC competitor with a single wiper 'parked' at about 45 degrees up!
The drain covers are a feature of many towns too - often painted up, and you might find 'cover spotting sheets' in places - gotta catch them all!

There is so much to see and do there, drive around the Island stopping at the various attractions , you will not be disappointed, I travel there twice a year to visit my son who has lived there for 14 years. Another fantastic vlog, i sort of hoped you would have bought a can of salmon to see how it compared to John West😶 and was the parked car an old jaguar?

A Japanese Cornwall seems a fitting description! I'm struck over and over this series how compact & efficient everything seems to be! And how nature is interwoven throughout. So beautiful.
I think Google did you rotten at the end there! 😬😱 Good thing you had a professional driver at the helm. 😉❤️❤️😎👍 xx

When I first came to Japan 57 years ago, those green decorations were cut out of bamboo leaves! But they soon changed to plastic. Also, it acts as a barrier between the oily chicken and the rice…

Btw the "seaweed ball" is actually a Sugidama literally translate as "cedar ball" It’s a sign for customers that freshly pressed sake from the new brewing season is available.
You can also see it outside of shops. Because i saw that ball i thought this "bathtub" has something to do with sake 🍶

Having a great trip! BTW, some research has been done into Kukai and the self-mummification process. The mystery was how the body didn't rot after death. Turns out the water he drank in the stream was very high in arsenic and theorize that was effectively killing all remaining bacteria prior to his death. Up near Lake Biwako there are still monks practicing the process today but have tried to remain as secretive about the process as possible. Pine needles the main diet. And the poison water. Japanese rice is always very high in arsenic from the soil it is grown in. I try to soak it several hours to remove as much as possible and avoid premature mummification on my part. A lot to be said for white bread. Cheers.

You can use Google Lens to translate screen instructions, it said "The application number (reservation number) and name could not be confirmed. Please check the application details again."

Like at 30:30, this happens all the time if you follow google map, because it tells you the shortest route possible and it happens to be the narrowest road in case of Japan. Try to stay on main streets with signs showing directions to different cities. Interstate routes have a number and you can see it on Google Map,too. Don't turn into a narrow road as google map tells you, but stay on interstate or other bigger road and wait for a re-route on a bigger road. Also, street signs like >2.2m< in a red circle tells you the maximum width of vehicle it can go through. A sign for maximum height is like this:
    v
    2.7m
    ^
    Another tip:
At 20:20, you probably went into a full-service gasoline stand. Full-service ones are usually smaller than self-service ones, pumps hanging from the ceiling at bigger full-service stations, and lastly and most importantly, higher rates!

Sorry to say but I haven’t watch you long enough yet. I know Chris is younger than you marianne but why do I never see Chris’s driving? I have tried to read up obout you both but I don’t know anything else. Marianne you are so brave doing all that driving. Good luck with the rest of your adventure.

    • @alil7348

Their usual response to this question is that Marianne loves to drive and Chris loves to film and edit etc, so they tend to each stick to those "jobs". But Chris does share the driving on the really long days.

      @TREADtheglobe  ปีที่แล้ว

Yes as the message below shares - Chris does drive on the long drives (like we did in the US and Canada) but I am happy to drive and love driving 😉🚐💕
