The Untold Truth Of The Highwaymen

  • The kids may not be listening to The Highwayman today, but there was a time when this country supergroup topped the charts and ruled the airwaves. 4 titans of American country music - Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, and Kris Kristofferson - released 3 albums over 10 years: "Highwayman," "Highwayman 2," and "The Road Goes On Forever."
    By the time they joined forces, each member of this band had led a storied career, with multiple #1 hits, for decades. And yet, the Highwaymen had only one #1 hit as a group, and none of its members wrote it. This song was Jimmy Webb's "The Highwaymen", and it's from this tune that the band took its name. But the band's success didn't end with this early anthem. Here's the untold truth of the Highwaymen.

    Glen Campbell originally recorded The Song Highwaymen in 1979 and did most of the arrangement of the song. Glen also filled in for Kristofferson in 1985 Farm Aid Show with the group. Kris was busy making a movie. Glen Campbell was more of a unofficial member than Merle Haggard was. Glen Campbell still had a much more successful silo career in the 80s then Cash and Waylon. Glen had a big album in 1987 with the Hand That Rocks the Cradle.

    What no one mentions is Jimmy Webb’s strangely brilliant and singular song “The Highwayman”.
    It was Webb’s song that gave this group the catalyst for joining forces. And since the highwayman in Webb’s song shape shifts into someone or something else through each of the four verses in the song, it is the perfect song for handing each verse to the next person in the group. Problem solved.
    Somewhere along the line, Glen Campbell also sang the song on stage with this same group.
    Campbell also had a hit with the song, embellishing it with his virtuoso guitar.

    • @highnrising
      @highnrising 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The song was written by Jimmy Webb, who wrote a lot of Glen Campbell's biggest hits. Campbell was the first to record Highwayman. I think he wrote in his autobiography that he wanted it released as a single, but his label never did. But Glen did it solo. His recording had a completely different vibe from the four-man epic that the Cash group made of it.

      @@highnrising Thanks for the note High. I have listened to Glen and his daughter's versions of the song and both are terrific. It is very interesting that the entire concept was a result of a vivid dream that Mr. Webb had whereby he was an outlaw riding full gallop on a horse fleeing the authorities. He got up from his bed in the middle of the night went down to his piano and wrote the first verse. Mr. Webb said he went to bed after spending the night "professionally drinking" with Harry Nilsson, if I remember right. Captivating song! Adonai

    Merle and his manager took 30 grand off of Waylon in a poker game. According to Waylon, he always liked Merle's music, but he was never close with him after that.

    It was interesting to hear Marty Stuart was Johnny Cash's son-in-law. I wonder how Rodney Crowell feels about that?

      @MickeyWN 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Don, it wouldn't matter. Rodney was married to Johnny's daughter Roseanne, but Marty was married to Johnny's daughter Cindy.

I guess we now know the answer to Georges question about who's gonna fill their shoes... RIP ; George,Johnny,Merle,Waylon,Glenn,Tammy,Ray,etc etc etc... Those were the good times...

    Waylon was not close to Merle. Waylon said in his book that he felt Haggard had took advantage of him in a poker game while he was bad on drugs where he end up winning over 10k from him. Said that he never trusted him after that. The poker game took place like in the late 60's. Crazy because that was long before both of their careers had peaked

    Very interesting. What talent. I disagree with Waylon Jennings regarding entertainment as a political platform. Music has been a political platform
    for centuries. The great classical composers used music in that way. Waylon may not have agreed because some of what Chris had to say wasn't aligned with what Waylon believed. We all recall when president Nixon invited Cash to sing at a function. Nixon was upset with protesters, and even asked Cash to do a couple of songs that would deride protesters as well as people of color. Cash said he wanted nothing to do with Nixon's nonsense, and would just
    do songs for everybody. Not only was Johnny Cash the original rapper but Cash spoke out for everyone. That was just who he is, and why he treated fans like next of kin. In societies throughout the world - unless you are wealthy and white - there are few people to speak or stand up for you. This is why we have art, music, and the visual of film. I'm sure Jessi Colter realizes this as well...now.

      When he did perform at the Whitehouse for Nixon, Johnny surprised Nixon by singing a song he wrote that essentially chastised Nixon and his administration for their treatment of the young in general and their treatment of young activists and protestors. Nixon had to sit through the entire song without reacting because cameras were on him.
