Thank you Joe Bonsall for your 50 years of great music. Rest in Peace!! You will Truly be missed. Sending condolences to Joe's family, friends, and fans who loved him.😢😢
Man this hit me hard, as I am the last one standing, in my immediate family , on both sides of the family.. Without God in my life it would be a lot tougher.
Holy cow. Such great harmony!! I am essentially the lead generation in my family. Mom’s generation is gone. The two oldest cousins are gone. My older sister is the oldest of our generation. I’m next. She and I haven’t spoken since my youngest was 18 months. She is now in her 40’s. So sad. A few years ago, two sister/cousins and I tried to organize a reunion. Fell flat. Now the two cousins/spouses and hubby and I meet one day a year. Also sad. But real life.
Right there at the exact same place in my life as the last two commenters--this song hit me in the exact same way as u all--and it hit me to my core because it defines exactly what my own personal life has been for the past 6 years--since 2018, I have gone through and experienced the exact things they are singing about here--so i identify deeply with this song, as I also identify deeply with the OAKS themselves, as i have a personal life history with them that goes back to when I was 2 yrs old when my grandparents joined the Oak Ridge Boys fan club--from that point on, the OAKS were a huge part of my life for the next 10 years, and they always have been on throughout life as I have carried those memories with me for my entire lifetime, but from the time of Elvira and Bobbie Sue on up to 1987-88 when Golden left the group, they were in their prime as performers during that time period, and those were the years I got to see them the most. I have shared my personal story with my history with the OAKS on another page on Larry's Country Diner ---but I was so blessed as a young kid to be able to see as many shows of theirs as I did, and get so close with them--things that u wouldn't be able to do today like hanging out with them and their band in their hotel rooms after shows, and getting pictures and autographs, and getting to go up on stage with them a couple of times during shows. These four guys were heroes to me and were like family--and u know what--they still are! And they always will be--for eternity! And an even bigger blessing is that I still have my grandmother with me today--she is 85--but she still has all of our old OAKS collectibles, pictures, books, autographs from that time--and it's something now being 45 myself that i still have her here with me and her and I can visit with each other and look through all of that old stuff together and re-live those awesome times we had together with the OAKS. It truly dosnt get any better than that. And my feeling about the OAKS comes from the way that they treated US--just as regular ol everyday people and music lovers, but more so, admirers of those 4 as men because of the way they treated us--they treated us like family and they treat all their fans that way. That's what makes them special. And I have always said that Golden has the perfect name because it captures exactly who and what he is--he truly is a gift from GOD, as they all 4 are, but Golden is one of those rare, once-in-a-lifetime kind of people who there will never be another like him. Ozark Mountain Jubilee and Thank God For Kids will always be Golden's anthems. I always said Golden was the heart and soul of the group, and Joe co-owned that with Bill as well, but then Joe also is the one who brought the spirit, the energy, the spark, the emotion to them. All 4 guys had their roles and played and worked them so well, and that's what made THEM work as a group. Duane was the business side of the operation--he was the one who handled the business end of things--the money, the producing, the behind-the-scenes laboring that takes place enabling the success of the group. And Richard brought the style and the swag!!! And of course the backbone of the bass!!! I still remember, even as a kid, being at a concert and when they would break into "Dream On", I knew there were going to be thousands of ladies screaming! That was an automatic part of that song at any live OAKS show! I have countless priceless childhood memories of times with them as a kid from all the shows we went to and the Fan Fairs in Nashville we went to see them at. But I believe my greatest lifetime thrill with the OAKS is from 2012--i was 32 yrs old by then and hadn't seen an OAKS show in probably 15-20 years. My grandmother and I went to see them play in Renfro Valley, KY, and we took along our old pictures and collectibles from the past of me with them as a little tyke, and got to meet them in the parking lot of their hotel they were staying at when they were getting on the bus to head to the show--and my thrll of a lifetime was talking with and meeting Golden again after all those years and showing him the pictures of me up on stage with him back in 1983-84.......he got as big a laugh and appreciation out of seeing what HE looked like back then as he did me--but u could see it literally meant the world to that man, after we introduced ourselves and told him who we were and then showed him the old pictures, that we had made the trip down there together to meet them and bring our old stuff to show them. I got a real thrill myself out of being able to look Golden in the eye and shake his hand at 32 yrs old after having not seen them for so many years after u grow up and your real-life stuff begins and u start getting lost in the years as time starts getting away from u as u progress thru your own personal life. What ends up happening is 20 yrs goes by without seeing these guys, then u get the chance to see them again as an adult for the first time since being probably 12 years old, and it really means a lot to u. It meant the world to me, and I believe it did Golden too. Because that's the way he and they always treated their fans: like gold. And that's something I will never forget, and will always love and be thankful to them for. Because they sure meant alot to our family over multiple generations--and it was a memory of a lifetime for me, getting to see these guys as an adult and to get the chance to thank all of them in person for all those wonderful memories as a child and the way they treated us as fans. As a young boy growing up in the early 80s, I had every OAKS record, 45, cassette tape, everything ever made on the OAKS, I had it!!! Or someone else in my family had it too!! We were all huge OAKS fans, but it really began with my grandparents, and I'm so thankful to them for all the wonderful memories they provided me with in taking me to see the OAKS so many places. And there's something about their music and always has been: it's touching, it's real, it connects, and does so in a way that is, again, as if it was family singing to u. If u just look at the expressions on the faces of the fans in this particular video here, u can see what im talking about---THATS the way these guys touched my soul. These 4 guys are gifts from GOD, as I said........I have been very sad and heavy-hearted since Joe passed, and I didn't realize when he originally stepped down how serious it really was, but looking back now, I should have. But I have been really re-living my OAKS history in my own life with them this past month since Joe died, and again, thanks be to GOD for still having my grandmother here with me today that I can re-live and share these memories with that her and I lived through together 40 years ago. Thank you to the OAK RIDGE BOYS for a lifetime of priceless memories, amazing life experiences, and for extremely talented and very underappreciated music, singing and band-performing. I have always said they may be the most underappreciated band/group in all of music history, regardless of genre. I know that says alot, but as a lifelong invested fan of them and all music genres period, I can attest to that. Their music stands up strong. And if u think about it, as far as present-day and for that same age group and generation that the OAKS are from, the Rolling Stones are the only group from that same time period that have stayed together all the way through ever since and are still playing together today. The OAKS are in some rare, small company in that aspect. And the Stones still being together performing today is the same as if the Beatles were still together today performing--thats one thing I think a lot of people don't think about. Anyway, a huge thank you to Larry's Country Diner for posting all these videos and allowing us lifelong fans to re-live all our special memories with the OAKS!!! I apologize for the length, but I greatly appreciate the opportunity to be able to share my personal stories I have with the OAKS. I just miss Joe so much. And obviously, I wish the OAKS the best as they finish up their Farewell Tour, but, for me personally, because of the fact it has been essentially the same 4 guys in this group since the late 60s to early 70s that have made the OAKS what they are in music history, and the legacy they leave behind, u take any one of these guys out of this group, and u can no longer have the true, real OAK RIDGE BOYS. Each one of them is irreplaceable. And I know they gotta finish their tour, and its nothing personal against this guy who "replaced Joe", and I know this guy and the continuation of the tour without him had Joe's blessing, and that is a testament to Joe's character and the reflection of who he really was as a man, but there is no replacing Joe Bonsall. Or Duane Allen. Or William Lee Golden. Or Richard Sterban. They are all irreplaceable as Oak Ridge Boys, as musicians, and as men! This tour needs to be the end, and it's heartbreaking to me that Joe was so sick he wasn't able to make it thru until the end of the tour and not be able to finish out with them to make for the perfect storybook ending of all 4 of them going out on top!!! But they all 4 still are going to go out on top, because they have always been on top, and always will be. GOD just has HIS own plans and we have to remember that. Joe is receiving his true rewards now, as will the rest of these guys when their times come too. Thank u once again--and thank u to all the OAK RIDGE BOYS for everything u have given us all as fans and as people--we truly could not have asked for more! I wish all the rest of u the best for the remainder of your time with us--i love u, OAK RIDGE BOYS---and GOD BLESS YOU ALL!!!!!!
