popular seafood restaurant in mangalore, machali restaurant mangalore, manguluru, fish curry, fish fry, ghee roast, fish thaali, crab ghee roast, pomfret masala fry, anjal tava fry, squid ghee roast, alle piao, sardine fry, prawn fry, koliwada, kingfish, top seafood in mangalore
Given its incredible popularity with hundreds of seafood lovers who visit here for the meals, fries and curries everyday, it’s hard to believe that this restaurant is only six years old. I visit this eatery that has the vibe of a busy dining hall to indulge in a humongous meal, and along the way also catch up with its unassuming owner, Vicky Pai, who says his trying experiences as a young executive looking for affordable, homestyle food in a new city, spurred him to open Machali - to serve tasty, homestyle food at affordable prices. And going by my meals at this eatery, I have visited thrice already, and watching fastidious Mangalorans relish the seafood here, Machali certainly delivers, whether one wants to enjoy a sumptuous fish meal and fry for Rs. 150 or splurge Rs. 300. Truly, a democratic seafood restaurant that caters to all.
    Fish Thaali
A standard Mangalore fish meal experience, on the plate there is a fish curry with a small piece of fish, some dry vegetables on the side, boiled rice, shrimp chutney, fried sandige and pickle. Servers walk along ladling more fish curry, a simple Konkani style lentil preparation, daali thove, and rasam out of buckets.
    Rs. 60 (usd 0.8)
    8/10
    Taru Buthai
Tiny sardines, fried to delicious scrumptiousness, the sort that you eat whole. Quite tasty!
    Rs. 100 (usd 1.3)
    8.5/10
    Prawn Fry
A robustly-flavoured fresh prawn preparation crusted in a Konkan koliwada masala. Once you get past the spices, you can taste the sweet lilt of the prawns.
    Rs. 230
    8.5/10
    Boneless Crab Ghee Roast
Perfect for those who love crab but don’t want to go through the hassle of de-shelling one. The lush ghee roast masala packs a punch more so against the mild flavours of the crab, the buttery fervour of the ghee brings the spices and the crabmeat together.
    Rs. 280 (usd 3.8)
    10/10
    Squid Ghee Roast
The squid was cooked to the texture that yielded quite gently to the bite, the masala though, seemed a tad salty to my taste. Perhaps a bit lacking in the ghee.
    Rs. 180 (usd 2.4)
    7.5/10
    Alle Piyao
A flavourful Konkani curry made of ginger, onions and fresh coconut. The onions, starring both in the masala and the seasoning, are quite pronounced on the palate, as is a tinge of turmeric and the warmth of the ginger.
    Rs. 130 (usd 1.8)
    10/10
    Anjal Tava Fry
A plump piece of fish, flakey and pristine in its freshness, crusted with a punchy masala. You can taste the red chilli spice the moment you place the fish in your mouth, but the meaty character of the anjal balances against the spicy hit.
    Rs. 200 (usd 2.7)
    9/10
    Pomfret Tava Masala
The pomfret is burdened under the weight of a flavourful masala that has notes of savouriness, heat and sourness, owing to the onions, curry leaves, chillies and tamarind. The fish is moist, poached in a turmeric curry first, before being slathered with the masala in a pan.
    Rs. 300 (usd 4)
    9/10
    Happy Eating!

I am from Mangalore and honestly, Mangalore is the most underrated city in India although it is beautiful and has so much to offer. Mangaloreans (born and raised in Mangalore) are welcoming, fun-loving, helpful, educated, and well-behaved . We do have a lot of outsiders residing here as well.
Here is a lenglthy comment to give non-Mangaloreans some insight on places to visit.
Mangalore/Mangaluru is a land of exquisite cultures, charms and cuisines. It is an educational hub and has many schools, engineering colleges, medical colleges, hospitals every kilometer ,restaurants, old tiled houses and sea-facing resorts. We have Hindus, Christians, Muslims, Sikhs, Jains and other religions in this small city celebrating festivals and preparing different cuisines on different occasions. You would come across a lot of beautiful temples, churches, mosques, and so on.
As a Mangalorean who has lived in M’lore for more than 30 years and also travelled to different states, I know for a fact that Mangalore has extremely tasty food, albeit, we haven’t gained much popularity. Many aren’t even aware that there is a city called “Mangalore” and confuse it with Bangalore and we have been busy correcting people ever since! Mangalore is famous for its scrumptious breakfast, ice creams, seafood, toddy, non-veg dishes with homemade masalas especially crab ghee roast, chicken ghee roast, squid ghee roast, prawns & fish tawa/masala fry, chicken sukka, chicken fry/grill, pork chili, pork bafat, along with Neer dosa or boiled rice and yes, not to forget the delicious veg dishes, too.
Now the famous question is what and where to eat???
    Let us begin with breakfast.
For typical Mangalorean breakfast, you may visit Shivbagh cafe (go upstairs to stay away from the chaos, new Taj Mahal cafe, Woodland, Chutney Pure Veg Restaurant, Hotel Janatha Deluxe, or ideal cafe to name a few. These are either small or congested restaurants that serve good breakfast. You can try buns, sheera, masala dosa, poori baaji here or something of your choice. For evening tea-time snacks, you can go to any of the aforementioned places again and try goli baje, banana podi, sweet potato podi, etc.
For Continental & Italian cuisine/English breakfast, I reckon Diesel Cafe wouldn’t disappoint you.
For toddy lovers, Kalivali The Toddy Lounge is the best place situated amidst the coconut trees. A beautiful village you wouldn’t want to miss.
    For lunch/dinner, you may visit
Madhuvan's Village restaurant, hotel Sai Palace, Shetty lunch home, Maharaja, gajalee, cruise n dine, redrocks, etc. These are restaurants where you can enjoy the ambience and eat/chill for a while.
    or
you can visit places like Machali, Narayana, Macchhi. These are small canteen-like restaurants where you enter, order, eat and leave immediately. Pretty crowded
but we can’t resist the yummy seafood. :)
I have heard many say that Narayana restaurant food is salty. Apparently, many order meals with fish fry and they end up eating the “crispy fish masala” given along with the fish fry on its own. That is a big NO!!!!!!! You need to mix your crisy fish fry masala with the boiled rice and relish the uniqueness of that masala. That’s how it is done! :)
For desserts/ice creams, visit Pabbas , Natural ice creams, Ideals ice cream, Cherry square or Brick house to taste the famous ice cream called “Some like it hot”.( All these ice creams were started by Mangaloreans )
Brick house has some good Lasagna, Alfredo pasta and other dishes, too .
For sweets/snacks - google the best rated bakeries.
Vas bakery has good egg puffs and are famous in M’lore,
    Cochin bakery has famous
Banana chips and many other crunchy snacks. The Stairway Bakery & Cafe has some yummy cakes. There are lots of places to visit. Google is your friend here.
For pet friendly restaurant, you must visit K9Restro.
If you love your beer and you are alcohol friendly or want a place to hang out with friends, you may visit ONYX Air Lounge & Kitchen (venue hosts dance nights with DJs), G Lounge, Spindrift, Froth on top , The Liquid lounge, Summer Sands Beach Resort , redrocks etc.
If you are craving for some village vibes, visit river roost resort, the estate resort bar and restaurant, or Guthu House pilikula Heritage village.
If you are famished and want to grab a quick bite late in the evening, you should try chicken shawarma and the grilled chicken from any of the small restaurants. You will find many across the streets. Best option is take-away or eat in the car. Middle eastern food with Mangalorean touch. You can try mixed-fried rice and biryanis, too.
We have good chaat places as well.
For a city that is extremely small, we definitely have a lot going on.
If you didn’t know, we are affable and most of us speak multiple languages. Many know a minimum of 4 languages which are Tulu, Kannada,English, and Hindi. Konkani and Beary are other languages that are widely spoken in this city.
We are very welcoming and our parents would gladly host lunch or dinner for any number of guests. We call it a Mangy thing! :)

Your love for the city shows. I feel like this about my own city but the effort you've put to detail out things, i haven't come across in any blog as I've been reading up for a visit to Mangalore soon. I grew up with my neighbours to whom Chikmagalur is hometown and I'd always had this place on my must visit. Thanks a lot for all that effort. Truly appreciate it

@@dr.poornimajosyula You definitely should. I’m from a small village in Mangalore which is 8 kms away from the city and I must say, many people in M’lore do not know the name of my village. This only means that M’lore hasn’t been explored at all. My village is extremely clean, beautiful and it is situated by the river. Also, for a change, everyone is educated which is rare compared to other villages I have been to. So, it’s a different vibe altogether. Oh, btw, we go fishing here a lot. If you like beaches, I would suggest you to go to Sasihithlu. It’s better than the common beaches in M’lore. Take some food along if you want to eat by the beach. They have nice meandering roads and coconut palms on the way to beach that would take your breath away. It is far from the city chaos and definitely a place to unwind. Don’t forget to eat Buns, sheera and golibaje with tea/coffee for breakfast and hot banana podi, potato Podi around 4ish for evening snacks. It is a vibe :) Also, ice apple (colloquially called erol/errol/irrol) are in season so if you are in Mlore, you should eat them. Sugarcane juice is also a must. We have been growing sugarcanes and tender coconuts for so many years now. Finally, have some Ice creams because M’lore is hot and humid. Have your fill and enjoy your visit. :)

Not a Mangalorean by birth or by residence but a part of me still thinks Mangalore (or Mangaluru as it is officially known now) is and will always be home! Lived 5 and a half glorious years in this wonderful city for my undergraduate medical studies. And trust me, Kripal sir’s food reviews on the restaurants in Mangaluru evoke a lot of wonderful memories of those carefree days! Thank you sir for not just bringing back those memories but for putting Mangalorean food on the world foodie map and giving it the attention that oh-so-truly deserves! Hope to pay a visit back soon to this wonderful city that gave me more than just a medical degree - so many beautiful memories and gastronomic delights for my tastebuds to remember for years to come! Cheers 🍻

The veg food in Machali is also too good ! You've got options of Paneer Ghee Roast and Mushroom Ghee Roast and other preparations also . The veg thali has one more pallya when compared to the fish thali ! There's like a secret rasam which not a lot of people know that they serve in Machali and that is kokkum saaru ! It's got crazy kokkum flavour and some garlic to go with it ! Man, these flavours work out too good ! Do try it the next time you're back here 😉!Also neer dos with ghee roast is a crazy combo which they only serve at night ! Plus they have a lot of biriyani options too !! Cheerios !
