This song was specifically written for the movie Philadelphia, starring Tom Hanks, Antonio Benderas, and Denzel Washington! It is about a gay man with HIV/AIDS who was fired from his job for those reasons! It won an academy award in 1994, and also got Tom hanks an Oscar for best actor! Love this song, and the movie is even better!!
I know it's corny to go on personal tangents lol but it's been a long time since I heard this song or watched the movie or video. I grew up very sheltered due to religion and this movie was one of the first times I felt so conflicted. My dad was so mad I watched the movie, meanwhile I went to bed crying because I couldn't grasp the idea of hating the men in the story. I was so touched seeing the family treating their brother just as their brother, which sounds silly 25+ years later but as a kid raised to see gay men as disgusting and evil it was important for me. The other movie I remember with same emotion was a tv movie with Aiden Quinn. The album for Philadelphia was how I became a Bruce Springsteen fan.
This song is really about the loss of friends to AIDS and if you watch the movie you’ll understand why he chose to write this song this way. If you went through the beginning of AIDS horror and lost many friends this song speaks to your soul.
You really need to watch the movie philadelphia. The song is sad because the movie is sad. I'm not a real big Tom Hanks fan but the movie Philadelphia really touched me. Watch the movie.
❤ It does. I was very early in my Nursing career when AIDS started. I worked in a small " inner city" type hospital and had cases early on. It was a depressing, desperate time before treatments were available.
Wow,had no clue!!! Much respect for this song then!!! My brother Johnny died of AIDS,age 25 in 1992.😢😢😢😢😢Many have died from AIDS😢😢😢😢😢🫶🫶🫶🫶🫶🫶☮️☮️☮️☮️☮️☮️
Dude honestly I’m from Philly and this song fits perfectly with today except trade AIDS/HIV for drugs. From “walking the avenue” (main neighborhood of where the it’s an open air drug market with dealers/homeless and addicted) and everything else. I hadn’t heard this in a long time and now re-listening it’s making me emotional. Lost a ton of people including my brother, best friend, uncle, cousin, and countless others. Was selling myself and hoping every time I used that it would be my last time and sick and tired of being sick and tired. ODed a few times and each time I came back angry I was still here. I have 4 years clean but it still hurts and always will.
Forty year old homophobic was all right with the song until he saw Tom Hanks and figured out that it was about a gay man. Tell him Dancing in the Dark is about two gay men cavorting about and watch him hate that one also.😆😅🤣
This is not a regular song track--it was written specifically for the movie Philadelphia and perfectly captures the meaning and significance of that movie. Springsteen won the Oscar for this song--the first time an Academy Award was given to a rock and roll artist. Check out the movie--it was a great one and Tom Hanks won his first Best Actor award for his lead role in the movie. It also starred Denzel Washington who was also fantastic in it. (He is singing live as he is walking and the street sounds are of course also live--singing to a music track.)
That's Ok BP, we like it and appreciate that you took a listen! For many of us who lost loved ones during the AIDS crisis, it brings a lot of that back front and center, it's kinda like an anthem for that period.❤️🕊👍
I have always found this great song to be very moving and emotional. It perfectly captured the essence of the film which was exceptional and very significant too. Bruce Springsteen is an incredible lycrist and musician. This song actually won an Oscar and it was so well deserved.👋
Springsteen is from Asbury Park, New Jersey. He wrote this song for the Tom Hanks movie, "Philadelphia", in which Hanks played a person with AIDS. Springsteen is a brilliant songwriter and performer. He has a million great songs!
@MikeytheGeek7711 yea he started getting recognition as an artist in the Asbury park music scene. Freehold is not that far from Asbury and also close to red bank where he still hangs out sometimes and it's where Kevin Smith is from
Bruce is an outspoken musician that has written many songs that push on topics that are political, socially driven and meaningful. He sings about the lives of working people and their challenges. Bruce has been the conscience for many for decades now. Some will argue that musicians should stick to entertaining and not be political. I would argue that music has always been political and has been a great influence on social & political changes in the world forever. Many artists in the 60's were driven to write music about the Vietnam War & Civil Rights and moved the needle with their influence over the youth. In the 70's, music pushed to give woman equality. In the 80's to end the Cold War, help hunger in Ethiopia, understand Apartheid in South Africa etc. Music has always been influential and shed light onto issues that many may not understand or know about. Bruce has always been a significant part of that. When Bruce writes about an issue, many listen because they respect the man. I wish more artists would be less about the quick pop cash and write songs that are meaningful to what ills we have in our society. Use their stardom to influence change. Our society is ignorant to politics and social issues because most are entertainment driven and know more about J-Lo's problems than what is going on that will actually impact our lives. Music brings the attention to those issues when it is done right.
Cried my eyes out during the scene when they played this in the movie. Powerful movie. I wish everyone would see it. If you haven't seen it bc it's about gay men, with respect, that's actually more reason for you to see it.
My uncle was a body builder who died from aids experiencing intravenous drugs and sharing needles. He passed when this movie/song came out. Hit really hit home, Brother. 😢
You totally missed it. It's a powerful movie and a great song that actually carries the feel of the movie, unlike many soundtrack songs from R&R artists, It can't be all fun and games; life can be sad. The AIDS epidemic killed so many people, most of them gay. It was a hard time for them. Listen to it again and like it, that's an order. BTY many people (including President Bonzo) adsolutly misunderstood Born in the USA.
The song, like the movie, is sad-melancholy because yes it was about the early days of AIDS, especially the stigma associated with contracting the virus.
I was a practicing physician during this period and lived in an area where I had many gay patients. I still remember losing people I’d grown close to over the years because we really had nothing to offer at the time. I loved that movie because it treated a person with AIDS as a person with rights which wasn’t always the case. Denzel Washington was great too. The lyrics would reasonate I think if you watch the movie. Nothing like Brokeback Mountain
It may not be your cup of tea but, you owe it to yourself and your family to see the movie. It shows how people were treated by even their friends and family during that time. People would not get it the same elevator, come into the same room, even paramedics were afraid of touching you, all this while you’re literally dying and desperately needed the comfort of friends.
This song always brings tears as I think of the early 80s. I think of the many mostly gay male friends who were lost to this new and horrible thing called HIV/AIDS. I miss them dearly. 😞
I can see how it doesn't hit for you - you didn't live through this era and haven't seen the movie. For many of us, when we hear this song, we're remembering friends long gone.
I am 56 and fell in love with Springsteen's music at 15! I have seen him live 30x . I have taken my children to see him . There is no better live performers than him and the E Street Band!!! He is a poet! His music is literally the soundtrack to my life. I could suggest tons of his music for you to check out but check out "Out on the Streets" live performance and "Darkness on the Edge of Town" ,and "Jungleland"!
No it's not. It's about a gay man who gets fired because he has AIDS. It was the middle of the AIDS crisis. It's about treating people as human, no matter how you feel about them.
Bruce is from New Jersey. Most of his early work tells a story of blue collar guys who fought in Vietnam when the rich kids got exempt and came home to crap, or kids that get oregnant, married and struggle or about himself and bsnd plsying in clubs at the NewJersey shore until they get their 1st contract . As he became more famous his songs were about the world around him.
Love Bruce the Boss and his music! You MUST watch the movie Philadelphia and then you will understand the song much better. Also, I recommend Springsteen's The Rising album that he recorded after 9/11. Every song on The Rising is a tribute to that day and all that we were collectively feeling.
Bruce was born and raised in Freehold, NJ. I grew up around Bruce Springsten, 2 towns over and have seen him at the Stone Pony when I was underage, he would occasionally stop into Friday night date night at a local roller rink when a bandmate's. I believe cousin and his highschool garage band would play, he would join in for a few songs...And I have seen him multiple times at stadium concerts in The,Meadowlands, Madison Square Garden, VeteransStadium in Phili. Run into him shopping..He is out and around still in NJ.
If you haven't seen the film "Philadelphia," you need to see it. It's a phenomenal movie that this song was written for starring Tom Hanks, Denzel Washington, and Antonio Banderas.
Bruce is a massive rabbithole, his back catalogue is huge and he has so many tracks to choose from. Personally his "Darkness On The Edge Of Town" is on my perfect album list, it's been a favourite since I first heard it as a kid, "Adam Raised A Cain" is such a tune as is "Racing In The Street"...
During Covid I started listening to songwriter, Steve Earle’s TH-cam videos about guitars. Each week he would focus on one of his extensive collection of guitars, talk about it’s attributes, and play one of his songs on it. Along about episode 13, Steve Earle’s son, Justin, died of a fentanyl overdose. Steve stayed on schedule with his TH-cam videos because music is at the center of his being. Still, it was shocking to see him. Broke my heart. I opened the comments, intending to write one and the first one I read was from Bruce Springsteen. Told me everything I needed to know about Bruce Springsteen. He’s solid. Steve doesn’t read comments. Bruce Springsteen knows this. His words stood between this broken recovering addict (Steve) and the judgement of others. Respect.
I love Bruce Springsteen, “The Boss”! He is an a legend, he is from New Jersey! His music is thought provoking and it’s about the gritty realness of life! Born in the USA, for example, talks about the plight of the Vietnam Vets! This song was on the soundtrack of the Oscar winning Tom Hanks movie, Philadelphia! It’s about the prejudice and fear related to AIDS and homophobia! Great film!❤❤
You don't need to have lost someone to AIDS to feel the power of this song. For several years I watched my father wither and fade away from cancer. Hank's character ripped at my heart as his physical condition mirrored what my dad went through, and I haven't been able to watch Philadelphia more than once.
This still hits me hard, my brother died from AIDS in the early 82. He used to get blood transfusions because of a childhood issue. The blood was tainted, because they had no clue.
The is the final track to a movie about the AIDS crisis back in the day. That ending of that movie with this song playing over the credits hit me like a ton of bricks as I had many friends that died during this time.
Bruce is Jersey thur & thur baby like me. He is a NJ favorite son. This song is from a movie which was about the discrimination during the early days of the AIDS epidemic hence the 😢 tone. I was in Philly yesterday & the state of the city since the pandemic has been equally 😢 as it was when this song was recorded. You are reacting to movie soundtracks today without even realizing it 🧐
I haven’t thought of this song in years. The brokenness in his voice coincides with the sadness of the movie. It didn’t resonate with happy 14 year old me so I didn’t really listen. Didn’t make playlist at all and still doesn’t but I do respect it.
They played this song a lot on the radio back in the day and I think I just absorbed it through osmosis. I knew what the song was about and that it was from the movie Philadelphia about a man who is dying of AIDS, but it was so heart wrenching, I couldn’t bring myself to watch the movie. (And this is the 1st time I’ve seen the music video, very touching) But the song wore a place in my consciousness & I’ll always love it for that.
We lost a brother to Aids ... Here in France...and I still could cry when I here Bruce Springsteen singing that song...and Tom Hanks acting ... Thanks for your vidéos that I watch from France 🙏
If you had seen the movie Philadelphia you would understand the song more. The song is reflective of the theme of the movie. Broken. Bare. Depressing. But real. AIDS was terrifying for those of us who grew up in the 80's and 90's. The fear and hurt that it enveloped. I saw Philadelphia as a teen. Left the theatre in tears
If you had lost someone to AIDS you would appreciate the way he did this. My sister in law died from AIDS and it took my mom's daughter in law dying for her to understand how many people were dying from all walks of life. This song is applicable to so many struggles. But I do understand your reaction, it is sad and lonely feeling. Never change how a song hits you and I hope you don't feel like you have to once people comment on how they feel or explain what it's about. Just means it's not for you at this point. I pray it never is. Sending love and light out to the world ❤
Unless you lived thru the AIDS epidemic and felt the hopelessness of losing loved ones to that horrible disease you can never understand what it was like. Scary horrible disease that changed the world. Watch the movie.
I was born in 1964. My kids were all 80 babies, but I’ve always listened to music. They could go back and name you all kinds of songs from different generations. I’ve always told them music is very important and they took it to heart. Congratulations on your baby girl.
Height of the AIDS epidemic, unrecognizable to myself... feeling lost and misunderstood and hopeless...as there was no cure! The movie, Philadelphia with Tom Hanks was incredible. I lost my brother to AIDS in 1991 and it was so sad to see him and others perish from the disease and to not have the support needed from others.
I forgot about that song holy moly.. It came off one of the best movies that Tom Hanks, Denzel Washington and Antonio Banderas did. They ended up with wining several awards for the movie and the song and it was so well worth it.
Its weird, for me the video and his singing in the video is what I like. I don't care so much for the studio version. I respect your opinion, and get it. Big fan of Bruce. I have seen him in concert and he puts on a great show. One of the best you will ever see.
It’s ok that this song doesn’t resonate and I sincerely pray it never does. The movie is about a guy (Hanks) who isn’t out during the AIDS crisis. When he finds out he has it, he ends up losing everything (including friends dying bc they have it). He asks a lawyer he knows but goes into it knowing the guy doesn’t like him but at least is honest enough to legit fight for him. (This was was released 6 years after we lost Freddie Mercury it was still very much a thing. Landlords in certain areas like SoHo would intentionally shut off electricity and water during the winter to speed up the death of queer residents so they could Jack the rent up and gentrify the region for more $.)
I love this song. Beautiful. We often put The Boss cd on while we are in our summerhouse , and I just stop and listen to this , really listen to it. Love it.
To each their own. "Philadelphia" is totally different from Springsteen's other work, which admittedly was a surprise back then, but it was PERFECT for a great movie, and absolutely deserved the Academy Award. I love the song BECAUSE it was different.
I love Bruce Springsteen’s music. He’s an excellent song writer and performer. Next check out Let’s Be Friends (Skin to Skin) or Waitin On A Sunny Day.❤
My favorite song by Bruce is "Downbound Train". now that's a heart wrencher. so well written. "Glory Days" is a great story song, and "My Hometown" is really good for nostalgia.

LOVE the movie also! And this song is amazing! BP, you've gotta see the movie and the song will hit differently.
Yes, it was an incredible movie, but it was real life, I lost so many friends during that time.❤️🕊
Yes 😊😊😊

Great movie
He's actually singing live in this video. The movie was one of the first mainstream movies that tackled the AIDS crisis.
Yes. He did sang live like that in a few of his videos. Brilliant Disguise, Better Days, and I think maybe Lonesome Day.
This song is really about the loss of friends to AIDS and if you watch the movie you’ll understand why he chose to write this song this way. If you went through the beginning of AIDS horror and lost many friends this song speaks to your soul.

Springsteen is every bit a poet as Dylan! I'm 100% about lyrics and I love Springsteen!
100% agree! 👍👍
100% agree as well, the best in the business if you ask em
Each to his own - I adore this song - I fell in love with it watching it for the first time.
Cried my eyes out during the scene when they played this in the movie. Powerful movie. I wish everyone would see it. If you haven't seen it bc it's about gay men, with respect, that's actually more reason for you to see it.
It's a BEAUTIFUL movie. Nothing like Broke Back Mountain.
Seriously!!!!!
Still a pretty good guess for someone who never saw the movie and wasn't sure what was going on. The guy's a genius.
WTF?
Bruce the BOSS ….Oscar winning song……for a soul shattering movie everyone should see. It marked a period of time that was horrific and terrifying.

Bruce Springsteen won the Academy Award for this song.
Bruce's Streets of Philadelphia won an Oscar for best song but Neil Youngs's song (Philadelphia) was also up for the Oscar. They are both brilliant.

Thanks for your vidéos that I watch from France 🙏
This is about the horrors of AIDS and the loss that is still in our hearts of the friends that have left us from this horrible, horrible disease.
The song won the Oscar for best original song and four Grammys
Agreed.
My best friend got him from her fiance and it got worse. That song was perfect for the movie and evokes so many hard memories.
It was written specifically for the movie Philadelphia
Beautiful song, beautiful movie. Get a bit choked up when I hear this.
I forgot about that song holy moly.. It came off one of the best movies that Tom Hanks, Denzel Washington and Antonio Banderas did. They ended up with wining several awards for the movie and the song and it was so well worth it.
Song written for heart wrenching movie about people dealing with AIDS - haunting!!
Love this tune, i remember going to the cinema to watch Philadelphia when it came out, great film
Philadelphia is am amazing movie and after watching it you'll be on board.
Its weird, for me the video and his singing in the video is what I like. I don't care so much for the studio version. I respect your opinion, and get it. Big fan of Bruce. I have seen him in concert and he puts on a great show. One of the best you will ever see.
Beautiful tune❤hands up too enjoy this masterpiece 🙏
Such a powerful song. Aint no angel gonna greet me. Its just you and i my friend
Check out Bruce singing "I'm on Fire" song next.
not from philly, but close. asbury park, new jersey. hard time to live through. many of us lost so many friends.
Check out some Bruce classics - “Born to Run”, “Hungry Heart”, “Thunder Road”, “Glory Days”, “Tunnel of Love”, “Rosalita”.
My favorite is Badlands.
My favorite is Waiting on a Sunny Day.❤
I love Bruce Springsteen!!!! Definitely check out Brilliant Disguise and The River.
Denzel Washington absolutely shined in this movie. His best performance in my humble opinion.
The obvious, underlying (irony) tension, is the fact that the city of Philadelphia professes to be “The City of Brotherly Love”.
I believe he won the Oscar for the best song. He never did anything like that before and it was a risk.
Watched the film and have always loved this song ❤
Everyone loved “The Boss”
"loves"
I love Bruce Springsteen’s music. He’s an excellent song writer and performer. Next check out Let’s Be Friends (Skin to Skin) or Waitin On A Sunny Day.❤
Much better song than “Dancing in the Dark.”
Dancing In The Dark is the only song of his that I ever liked. Nothing personal. Just never was into his sound.
@@frankenfurter58same.
Huge Springsteen fan! His songs cover everything.
Beautiful sad song. Soundtrack for the movie Philadelphia: the movie will make you cry.
Great film Philadelphia extremely sad
My favorite song by Bruce is "Downbound Train". now that's a heart wrencher. so well written.
"Glory Days" is a great story song, and "My Hometown" is really good for nostalgia.
Bruce is a poet for the masses. Check out anything from his albums The River or Born To Run.
Love this song ❤
Probably top 3 performance by Tom Hanks. Along with Castaway and Forrest Gump. I like this song by Bruce, he gives the right cadence to a sad song
It's a beautiful song. This is from the movie Philadelphia and you'll understand the song better. Bruce is a real storyteller through his music.
Huge Springsteen fan (music). Grew up in his Born in the USA phase. As an adult, I discovered some of his earlier stuff and love it.
Bruce puts more into one song than most acts put into a whole album! Love you Bruce.
Phenomenal song!
