Oh...that train wolf howl/train whistle.... I love most of what Mr Springsteen has done in his long career. This song took a bit of a beating a few years later because people couldn't get past the fact that he'd used the word "Daddy". If you think about in one way, you can MAKE its creepy in your own head. But to me me it meant he knew she was married, by choice, to a "sugar daddy" - as in, a younger, beautiful woman who willingly becomes a trophy wife to an older, very rich man basically for the benefits. It was her deal. He knew that she was never going to leave the money life; but she was bored, she was playing with him to see she could get a reaction, and wanting the best of both worlds by going downtown and getting her car detailed again, and again, and again by the hot mechanic - then this time, handing over the keys. He was smart - which is why he thought about it... dreamed about it...then decided against it, smiled, dropped the keys off and walked home. It was never going to go well any other way and he knew it.. But OH... that lonesome sound at the end... a howl towards an unattainable, luminous and magnificent but (probably a little cold, and with a dark side) celestial body.
You nailed it...Powerful storytelling plot, haunting music. And Bruce is a darn good actor - A whole movie in 3 minutes! You really could see the story.
I'm a woman, around 22 years old when this video was on MTV. I was in love with that small smile he had after he dropped the keys into the mail box. It was such a subtle thing that said so much. I liked that the character found some self pride in his own actions, that he was going to keep on the path of being a real man, and not the poor boy toy for a bored rich woman. And the song was just beautiful.
thank you for that story :) i am a guy and my step dad that i hated had the casette in the Radio with that song and i felt it so much !!!!!!!!!! even i could not understand a word.(i am german) Now of course i understand hahaha - born 81 in east germany
The Boss has written many hundreds of great songs down the years, and they're all in different kinds of genre's. The man is a songwriting/storytelling/performing genius. One of the all time greats. 🙋♂
Probably one of his shortest songs, but one of the most intense. The lyrics are fantastic and really represent the emotion and tension of the song. Great stuff.
This song IS on Born in the USA and he was a great admirer of Roy Orbison, organizing the video concert Black and White Nights. He is more than hard driving rock. He's got more depth and variety than a casual sampling might suggest. He evolved many times over the years as you can see through Nebraska, and The Rising and more. He is The GOAT.
He's referring to her husband because she has a ring on when she hands him the keys, he says did your daddy leave you all alone, her husband ... Bruce Springsteen envisioned "Fire" as a song which could be recorded by his idol Elvis Presley. It was written after Springsteen saw Presley perform at a May 28, 1977 concert at the Spectrum in Philadelphia. Springsteen said, "I sent [Elvis] a demo of it but he died before it arrived."
Jungleland,- one of the greatest music/lyrics combinations in rock history “Lost in the flood” “Badlands”, “Tenth avenue freeze out” “Hard to be a Saint in the city”, “Thunder Road”, “Rosalita” so much great old school Bruce, you won’t stop once you start.
I've just seen him a couple of weeks ago in concert in Odense, Denmark . He was Amazing!!! A handsome, talented, charismatic 74 year old man singing for 3 hours without a break. WOW!!!
A great Bruce Springsteen song but you really need to hear Born To Run, The River, Tunnel of Love, Thunder Road, and most importantly, Meeting Across The River.
Springsteen has a much more eclectic songbook than many people realize. For every Thunder Road you have a Tunnel of Love. For every Hungry Heart or Rosalita there's The River and My City of Ruins. When he isn't sounding like his expected self, he can sound llike Orbison, Pete Seeger, Van Morrison, even Eric Burdon. When you've got 4 hours to fill every night, you need range.
Two more Springsteen songs for you to check out -- "The River" and "Philadelphia", the title song for the Tom Hanks movie of the same name. Bruce won an Academy Award for that.
Pegasus, this song and the other two you mentioned are from the same album! It was my first Springsteen album back in the early 80’s. My Dad’s a Springsteen fan since the 70’s. I’ve known every word to this song since before I knew what it meant, lol. I remember in college in creative writing class, my tweedy, elbow-patches, gin rose-having professor cited the third verse of this song as a piece of genius wordsmithing. I’ve always thought that. Bruce is one of my favorite lyricists. I’m a novelist and I learned a lot from this dude’s lyrics. “Sometimes it’s like someone took a knife baby, edgy and dull, and cut a six-inch valley through the middle of my skull” is a fukkin BAR.
BORN IN THE USA was such a huge album. So many hit songs - "Born in the U.S.A", "I'm on Fire", "Cover Me", "Glory Days", "Dancing in the Dark", "My Hometown" all had success on radio and/or video. Bruce already had a huge following and this album just catapulted him into the stratosphere as an iconic artist with other 80's mega stars - MJ, Prince, Madonna etc of that era. But Bruce has always been Bruce...genuine and a good ole boy who sings about life. Mad respect for him as a singer/writer and artist.
When this album came out I was already OBSESSED. He's just so good. I was late to the party, I didn't know until a friend gave me Born to Run. That's it. Have loved him since. But singer/songwriters are always special in my book.
At my age the sexiest thing in that video is the car 😎 but as a teenage girl - woof this song & Bruce worked for me. Never saw the video because I was out being young ☮️
Kudos on being able to drive a stick. I’m a small town tomboy, raised with cars. I’m always amazed when I find people who can drive a stick. It’s a lost art.
My favourites by him is Tougher Than The Rest, River and Brilliant Disguise are also of a similar pace. He has so many I enjoy. Always a powerful performance from The Boss.
If you haven't done it.......do The River by Springsteen. Epic storytelling!! 'Those memories come back to haunt me They haunt me like a curse Is a dream a lie if it don't come true Or is it something worse' If you are looking for more Springsteen rock, try Thunder Road 'You can hide 'neath your covers and study your pain Make crosses from your lovers, throw roses in the rain Waste your summer praying in vain for a savior to rise from these streets Well now I'm no hero, that's understood All the redemption I can offer, girl, is beneath this dirty hood'
Haven't watched yet, but I can only imagine BP's face at the lyrics. Edit: NICE! He didn't take it in the way that so many weirdo critics ran wild about the "Hey, little girl, is your daddy home?" at the time. Kudos.
My favorite car is a ‘67 Jaguar XKE convertible, cherry red. I dated a man who had one for a while. My Mom’s favorite is the car on this video ‘55 Thunderbird.
When I was in third grade I was recording songs off the radio and Journey’s Faithfully was followed up with this song. I never liked it, until fairly recently lol ..I’m glad it finally grew on me 🤪
Hey BP, I suggested you react to Born in the USA. You talk about knowing the song but I don't think you've listened to the words based on you never talking about its lyrics. I'm pretty sure you would. Glory days, Girls in their summer clothes, 10th avenue freeze out, and Born to Run are really good too. Hope the family is doing well. Great reaction. PS I drive a stickshift too.
Hey BP. Great reaction! Not many people know this, but it was originally sung by Michael Jackson. JUST KIDDING!! It was originally released by Richard Pryor..... OOOOHHH! Gotcha again! Thanks folk, I'm here all week! And don't forget to tip your waitress!!
I actually like his softer stuff best. This one is my favorite. Also check out "STREETS OF PHILADELPHIA", "SECRET GARDEN", and "BRILLIANT DISGUISE" for more of his softer side.
When I heard this song for the first time back in the day I thought it was a slightly up beat version of Johnny Cash's Ring Of Fire. Then I had to listen to it again!
Without the visual video reference (my first time seeing it since it's release), this song reads much darker. Hey, little girl, is your daddy home? Did he go away and leave you all alone? I got a bad desire Oh, oh, oh, I'm on fire Tell me now, baby, is he good to you? And can he do to you the things that I do? Oh no, I can take you higher Oh, oh, oh, I'm on fire
What I didn’t know is that he started out about the same time as Bob Dylan and they played in similar venues, etc. Some people compared them. BP man, you HAVE TO check out Dylan’s song, “Subterranean Homesick Blues”. This is rumored to be the first ever rap song. Make sure to get the video, not just the audio.
Love this song!!! Bruce the train whistle! I learned in a '62 Ford Falcon, 3 on the tree. My Maverick was also a column shift. Drove some standard Pintos. Finally got an automatic '88 Ford Taurus.
I love this song. I seen the video with you fir the first time and it changed my perspective in the sing. He was saying I THINK that if her husband wasn't doing it he could take it up another notch. They showed her ring when she gave him the keys.
My dad was the same way. I had to learn to drive a 1977 Chevy Monza 5 speed stick shift although I was allowed to use the more expensive automatic for my actual driving test...lol. I later bought that Monza from my parents when I graduated high school and went off to university in the neighboring state. Of course, they expected me to come home for visits regularly since I had a car. This is the kind of music that played on the radio during that time. "Glory Days" is another great Springsteen song - also nostalgic but more upbeat.
You should listen to some early Springsteen hits, like "Thunder Road", "Born to Run," and "Tenth Avenue Freeze Out." Later Springsteen hits are also good, but the earlier ones are my favorites.
Bruce LOVED Johnny Cash! Johnny was one of Bruce's biggest influences and Bruce has been involved in several Johnny Cash projects. Bruce is one of the premier lyricists in any genre of music! He has a real folk music kind of mentality to lyrics
If you thought _This_ was a trip, you should try, "Fire" sung by The Pointer Sisters, written by Springsteen. As with Prince, some of his most interesting songs are the ones sung by other people.
All of Bruce’s songs are great but one of my favorites is Waitin On a sunny Day. Please play this next. It’s such an upbeat tempo song and just makes you feel good! 🎉🎉

Excellent interpretation 👍🏼
Good summing up!!
You nailed it...This song is so powerful on so many levels.
You nailed it...Powerful storytelling plot, haunting music. And Bruce is a darn good actor - A whole movie in 3 minutes! You really could see the story.
Yep. I was proud of him back then and now

EASILY my fave Springsteen tune!!
Same, short and sweet. Underappreciated jewel.
Me, too! My all time favorite by the Boss
My favorite too!
When it came out, my 15 years older, Motown only brother was like, "HEEEeeyyy...!" It was huge.
Yeah mine too but the pedo lyrics have always disturbed me though

Glory Days
Probably one of his shortest songs, but one of the most intense. The lyrics are fantastic and really represent the emotion and tension of the song. Great stuff.
I have always loved this song. U2 and Springsteen were making incredible music at this time. Tremendous 👌
Badlands, rosalita, Jungleland, darkness on the edge of town. Dive in, man.
Born to run, The River, Badlands ,...Oh my God I was in love with him❤😂
Gotta check out The River (live in Tempe). It’s one of his more emotional songs about the working class.
My favorite Springsteen song! I think he wrote it about his sis and BIL
This is my absolute favorite song by Bruce. Nothing more to be said, except thanks for the great reaction. 👏👏🥰
This song IS on Born in the USA and he was a great admirer of Roy Orbison, organizing the video concert Black and White Nights. He is more than hard driving rock. Back when music videos were mini movies. ❤
One of my fave Springsteen songs.
My favorite. Netflix has "Springsteen on Broadway". It's a one-man show he put on in New York. Awesome.
I get "Eddie and the Cruisers" vibes from this song. My favorite of Bruce's.
Thank you for this reaction ! I’m On Fire and Sad Eyes are classic Springsteen songs that showcase his voice and I agree with you, Johnny Cash vibes
Back in the 80s, every hit song was expected to be made into a video for MtV; we waited in anticipation for the video to air for our favorite songs ❤🎶
I've just seen him a couple of weeks ago in concert in Odense, Denmark . He was Amazing!!! A handsome, talented, charismatic 74 year old man singing for 3 hours without a break. WOW!!!
Streets of Philadelphia is an awesome song by Bruce for the movie Philadelphia. The lyrics are haunting.
I agree, paints a vivid picture of the Aids epidemic in the 80s.
This whole album is good, I lived in Texas when this came out. Played it over n over.
A great Bruce Springsteen song but you really need to hear Born To Run, The River, Tunnel of Love, Thunder Road, and most importantly, Meeting Across The River.
Don’t forget Secret Garden.

My first car was a 1969 chevy impala 4 door...2nd was a 1972 dodge charger!
My first was a 63 Impala SS.
Thank you for getting the Johnny Cash vibe!! Bruce loved Johnny and Johnny covered several of Bruce's songs. Bruce is every bit a poet as Dylan
My favourite song of Bruce’s…love it!
I love Bruce Springsteen! Most of his hard rocking songs are filled with deep meaning! However, I love this softer, sensual side of “The Boss”!❤❤
Never saw the video because I was out being young ☮️
one of my fav songs by The Boss
My fav is on the same album "Downbound Train" very haunting emotional song.
Kudos on being able to drive a stick. I’m a small town tomboy, raised with cars. I’m always amazed when I find people who can drive a stick. It’s a lost art.
Definitely one of my favorites from him. This whole album is fire as well.
Springsteen has 50 great songs - 100 really good songs - 200 good songs. Not a bad one.
My favourites by him is Tougher Than The Rest, River and Brilliant Disguise are also of a similar pace.
He has so many I enjoy. Always a powerful performance from The Boss.
so softly intense. One of my favorite tunes ever.
The River!!!! Best Springsteen ever! Loved Im on Fire too, just too short!
Bruce’s range musically and topically is just phenomenal. Don’t ever expect, just enjoy.
yeah this song man...of all his songs. this is my favorite.
If you haven't done it.......do The River by Springsteen. Epic storytelling!!
'Those memories come back to haunt me
They haunt me like a curse
Is a dream a lie if it don't come true
Or is it something worse'
If you are looking for more Springsteen rock, try Thunder Road
'You can hide 'neath your covers and study your pain
Make crosses from your lovers, throw roses in the rain
Waste your summer praying in vain for a savior to rise from these streets
Well now I'm no hero, that's understood
All the redemption I can offer, girl, is beneath this dirty hood'
This is one of the hubby`s favorite songs...I`ve always loved Tenth Avenue Freeze Out and Hungry Heart by him!
Haven't watched yet, but I can only imagine BP's face at the lyrics.
Edit: NICE! He didn't take it in the way that so many weirdo critics ran wild about the "Hey, little girl, is your daddy home?" at the time. Kudos.
My favorite Bruce song!! 💋🍹💋🍹💃🌟👵🐺🌵
Streets of Philadelphia is on another level…took

My favorite car is a ‘67 Jaguar XKE convertible, cherry red. I dated a man who had one for a while.
My Mom’s favorite is the car on this video ‘55 Thunderbird.
Roy Orbison was a legend to the likes of Elvis Presley and Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen
Born to Run. Studio version. Iconic. Fantastic lyrics, you’ll see
When I was in third grade I was recording songs off the radio and Journey’s Faithfully was followed up with this song. I never liked it, until fairly recently lol ..I’m glad it finally grew on me 🤪
The music video was directed by Brian De Palma, which is why it seems like a mini movie.
The Born In The USA album was considered Springsteen's entry into Pop.
Glory Days is another banger that will have you deep in thought
Another gorgeous ballad by him is One Step Up and Two Steps Back
Bruce Springsteen is iconic.
WONDERED when you would get to this one!!!!
When he was 🇺🇸
the fever is fantastic

Hey BP. Great reaction! Not many people know this, but it was originally sung by Michael Jackson. JUST KIDDING!! It was originally released by Richard Pryor..... OOOOHHH! Gotcha again! Thanks folk, I'm here all week! And don't forget to tip your waitress!!

Love his song, Cover Me
When I heard this song for the first time back in the day I thought it was a slightly up beat version of Johnny Cash's Ring Of Fire. Then I had to listen to it again!
Without the visual video reference (my first time seeing it since it's release), this song reads much darker.
Hey, little girl, is your daddy home?
Did he go away and leave you all alone?
I got a bad desire
Oh, oh, oh, I'm on fire
Tell me now, baby, is he good to you?
And can he do to you the things that I do?
Oh no, I can take you higher
Oh, oh, oh, I'm on fire
Another great song from him is The Streets of Philadelphia.
The River is also a really good song.
You gotta see live performances of No Surrender, Badlands, Backstreets and The River.
The little Bird is a 56 model. Same style as the one in American Graffiti as I recall, maybe a different interior color!

The Boss - Tunnell of Love.
This is my favourite Bruce song, I cant believe your doing this. love it
One Step Up is one of my favorites - sad, but touching. Love this one as well!
I love this song. I seen the video with you fir the first time and it changed my perspective in the sing. He was saying I THINK that if her husband wasn't doing it he could take it up another notch. They showed her ring when she gave him the keys.

❤❤❤ Try "Born To Run", "Hungry Heart", "Glory Days" and "Human Touch".
Bruce LOVED Johnny Cash! Johnny was one of Bruce's biggest influences and Bruce has been involved in several Johnny Cash projects.
Bruce is one of the premier lyricists in any genre of music! He has a real folk music kind of mentality to lyrics
Bruce's lyrics have ALWAYS been GREAT!!! Even his "fun songs" have GREAT LYRICS....GREAT "STORIES"!!! :) ENJOY, BP!!!
Great reaction!. If you want to see Bruce rock check out "Sherry Darling" from the 1979 No Nukes Concert in Madison Square Garden
Born to Run!!
If you thought _This_ was a trip, you should try, "Fire" sung by The Pointer Sisters, written by Springsteen.
As with Prince, some of his most interesting songs are the ones sung by other people.
This song and Tunnel of Love are my favorite Springsteen songs.
One of my favorites of his is Glory Days. Song of nostalgia!!
This is the only Springsteen song that I could hear Elvis singing. He'd slay this song.
All of Bruce’s songs are great but one of my favorites is Waitin On a sunny Day. Please play this next. It’s such an upbeat tempo song and just makes you feel good! 🎉🎉
5:51 MAN you saying some amazing facts !
I can't believe you did this one I'm going to see if you can figure out what's going on❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
