I like this setup and came up with a similar solution, except for the float switch. However, I found that the seal at the top of mine wasn't good enough. My ladies like to jump on top of the lid and poop and sure enough, their water was quickly turning into poop water.
In the end, I got a 55 gallon drum I had laying around that I had paid $11 for and connected it to 1" pvc pipe. I could go into the details for anyone that wants. I have a 500W heater inside and a circulator pump because I was worried about water freezing in the 1" pipe, where the nipples are connected. When it gets too cold, the pump starts circulating and constantly bringing in new warm water that's being heated inside the tank.
The only thing I still want to do is add a gutter to the coop and have it drain right into the barrel so that I'll never have to fill it up. Even if I never do that, I only have 8 birds. It'll take them months to drink down 55 gallons. At worst, I'd have to drag a hose out 3 times a year maybe to fill it up.

Nice, sounds like a good setup. Seems similar to my “mother of all chicken waterers” which is an IBC tote with pump that moves 1700 gallons an hour with a 200 watt heated element with 1.5 inch PVC zip tied to the IBC tote cage. I fill it up at beginning of winter and it works in all temps.

Have you ever had issues with the water nipples freezing while the water stays thawed in the bucket? It gets to just below freezing where I’m from.

It can get a little pricey, but if you already have the heat element and extension cord it’s not too bad.
